| 2 | Congenital diarrhea in a newborn infant: A case report显示文摘BACKGROUND Microvillus inclusion disease(MVID)is a rare autosomal recessive cause of severe congenital diarrhea with significant morbidity and mortality.Definitive treatment involves bowel transplant.The diagnosis of this condition can be challenging and a few genetic panels are available for the identification of the most common mutations.We present the case of an infant with MVID due to a mutation not reported in the literature before.CASE SUMMARY We report the case of an infant transferred to our institution with severe diarrhea of unknown etiology,failure to thrive,and significant metabolic derangements.An extensive work-up including stool studies for common gastrointestinal pathogens,abdominal ultrasound,esophagogastroduodenoscopy with duodenal biopsy and flexible sigmoidoscopy failed to reveal a diagnosis.Multiple dietary and formula regimens were introduced but all resulted in voluminous diarrhea.She remained on total parenteral nutrition(TPN)for the duration of her hospital stay.Genetic testing was done and she was subsequently found to have a novel mutation in the MYO5B gene[homozygous mutation for MYO5B c.1462del,p.(Ile488Leufs*93)]giving us the diagnosis of MVID.She remains on TPN while awaiting bowel transplant at the time of the compilation of this case report.CONCLUSION We report a novel mutation involved in MVID and highlight the importance of considering this disease when faced with a newborn presenting with life threatening diarrhea.At the time of this publication,232 allelic variations of this gene(MIM#606540)exist in National Center for Biotechnology Information’s database.Our patient’s mutation has not been reported in literature as a cause of MVID. | Mehrin Sadiq Omer Choudry Arun K Kashyap Danitza M Velazquez | 2019 | World Journal of Clinical Pediatrics2019,8,3: | 3 |
| 3 | Antimicrobial Agents from Selected Medicinal Plants in Libya显示文摘Objective:To test the in vitro antimicrobial efficacy of water and methanol extracts of 23 plan species that are commonly used in Libyan folk medicine.Methods:The antimicrobial activity was determinec using the well-diffusion method.Four test microorganisms were used namely,Escherichia coli,Salmonella species,Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis.The minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) was determined for the high biologically active crude plant extracts.Results:Among 23 medicinal plants used in the study,only 5 methanolic extracts[Rosmarinus offcinalis L,Carduus marianium L.,Lantana camara L.,Rhus tripartite(ueria) Grande,and Thymus capitatus(L.) Hoffm(link)]showed the highest antimicrobial activity againsl Staphylococcus aureus,Bacillus subtilis and Salmonella species,while 22 methanolic and aqueous extracts showed moderate to weak antimicrobial activity on all tested organisms.However 19 of the extracts showed no activity at all against Gram-ve and Gram +ve microorganisms.MIC was found to be 1.25 mg/mL(Thymus capitatus),3 mg/mL(Rhus tripartite),4 mg/mL(Carduus marianium),5 mg/mL(Rosamarinus officinalis) and5 mg/mL(Lantana camara),respectively.Conclnsions:The present results revealed that,crude methanolic extracts of the investigated Libyan folk medicinal plants exhibited mild to high in vitro antibacterial activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms. | Hasan MH Muhaisen Miftah Mailoud Ab-Mous Fadel A Ddeeb Aboclaid All Rtemi Omer M Taba Mehtab Parveen | 2016 | Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine2016,22,3: | 2 |
| 4 | Current understandings of the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes:Genetics to environment显示文摘Type 1 diabetes(T1D)is an autoimmune disease that usually strikes early in life,but can affect individuals at almost any age.It is caused by autoreactive T cells that destroy insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.Epidemiological studies estimate a prevalence of 1 in 300 children in the United States with an increasing incidence of 2%-5%annually worldwide.The daily responsibility,clinical management,and vigilance required to maintain blood sugar levels within normal range and avoid acute complications(hypoglycemic episodes and diabetic ketoacidosis)and long term micro-and macro-vascular complications significantly affects quality of life and public health care costs.Given the expansive impact of T1D,research work has accelerated and T1D has been intensively investigated with the focus to better understand,manage and cure this condition.Many advances have been made in the past decades in this regard,but key questions remain as to why certain people develop T1D,but not others,with the glaring example of discordant disease incidence among monozygotic twins.In this review,we discuss the field’s current understanding of its pathophysiology and the role of genetics and environment on the development of T1D.We examine the potential implications of these findings with an emphasis on T1D inheritance patterns,twin studies,and disease prevention.Through a better understanding of this process,interventions can be developed to prevent or halt it at early stages. | Adebola Matthew Giwa Rizwan Ahmed Zahra Omidian Neha Majety Kagan Ege Karakus Sarah M Omer Thomas Donner Abdel Rahim A Hamad | 2020 | World Journal of Diabetes2020,11,1: | 2 |
