2PARTICLE-COLLISION AND POROGEN-LEACHING TECHNIQUE TO FABRICATE POLYMERIC POROUS SCAFFOLDS WITH MICROSCALE ROUGHNESS OF INTERIOR SURFACES显示文摘A facile technique is herein reported to fabricate three-dimensional(3D) polymeric porous scaffolds with interior surfaces of a topographic microstructure favorable for cell adhesion.As demonstration,a well-known biodegradable polymer poly(lactide-co-glycolide)(PLGA) was employed as matrix.Under the porogen-leaching strategy,the large and soft porogens of paraffin were modified by colliding with small and hard salt particles,which generated micropits on the surfaces of paraffin spheres.The eventual PLGA scaffolds after leaching the modified porogens had thus interior surfaces of microscale roughness imprinted by those micropits.The microrough scaffolds were confirmed to benefit adhesion of bone marrow stromal cells(BMSCs) of rats and meanwhile not to hamper the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of the cells.The insight and technique might be helpful for biomaterial designing in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.Zhen Pan Ze-hua Qu Zheng Zhang Rong Peng Ce Yan 丁建东 2013Chinese Journal of Polymer Science2013,31,5:3
3Key-frame reference selection for non-feedback video communication显示文摘This article addresses the problem of reference picture optimization in video communication over error prone networks. A novel estimation model for transmission distortion is proposed. This model is capable of recursively estimating the overall end-to-end distortion caused by quantization, error propagation, and error concealment. Simulation results show that this model can accurately estimate channel distortion. Then, based on the distortion estimation model, a new non-feedback key-frame reference picture selection (KRPS) algorithm is developed. The optimum reference picture minimizes the transmission distortion under the rate-distortion optimization framework. 4Stable carbon and oxygen isotopes of four planktonic foraminiferal species from core-top sediments of the Indonesian throughflow region and their significance显示文摘Horizontal and vertical distributions of δ^(18)O and δ^(13)C were investigated in shells of four planktonic foraminiferal species, Globigerinoides ruber, Globigerinoides sacculifer, Pulleniatina obliquiloculata and Neogloboquedrina dutertrei, from a total of 62 core-top sediment samples from the Indonesian throughflow region. Results were compared to modern hydrologic conditions in order to explore potential of proxies in reconstructing fluvial discharge and upper ocean water column characteristics in this region. Our results show that, in the Makassar Strait, both of depleted δ^(18)O and δ^(13)C of these four species were linked to freshwater input. In the Bali Sea,however, depleted δ^(18)O and δ^(13)C for these species may be due to different reasons. Depleted δ^(18)O was a result of freshwater input and as well influenced by along-shore currents while depleted δ^(13)C was more likely due to the Java-Sumatra upwelling. Comparison of shell δ^(18)O records and hydrographic data of World Ocean Atlas 2005 suggests that G. ruber and G. sacculifer calcify within the mixed-layer, respectively at 0–50 m and 20–75 m water depth, and P. obliquiloculata and N. dutertrei within the upper thermocline, both at 75–125 m water depth. N.dutertrei calcifies at slightly deeper water depth than P. obliquiloculata does. In general, δ^(13)C values of both G.ruber and G. sacculifer are larger than those of P. obliquiloculata and N. dutertrei at all sites, possibly related to depth habitats of these species and vertical distribution of nutrients in the Indonesian throughflow region.ZHANG Peng ZURAIDA Rina XU Jian YANG Ce 2016Acta Oceanologica Sinica2016,35,10:3

6Zebrafish hhex-null mutant develops an intrahepatic intestinal tube due to de-repression of cdx1b and pdx1显示文摘The hepatopancreatic duct (HPD) system links the liver and pancreas to the intestinal tube and is composed of the extrahepatic biliary duct, gallbladder, and pancreatic duct. Haematopoietically expressed-homeobox (Hhex) protein plays an essential role in the establishment of HPD;however, the molecular mechanism remains elusive. Here, we show that zebrafish hhex-null mutants fail to develop the HPD system characterized by lacking the biliary marker Annexin A4 and the HPD marker sox9b. The hepatobiliary duct part of the mutant HPD system is replaced by an intrahepatic intestinal tube characterized by expressing the intestinal marker fatty acid-binding protein 2a (fabp2a). Cell lineage analysis showed that this intrahepatic intestinal tube is not originated from hepatocytes or cholangiocytes. Further analysis revealed that cdx1b and pdx1 are expressed ectopically in the intrahepatic intestinal tube and knockdown of cdx1b and pdx1 could restore the expression of sox9b in the mutant. Chromatin-immunoprecipitation analysis showed that Hhex binds to the promoters of pdx1 and cdx1b genes to repress their expression. 7High-quality genome assembly of Huazhan and Tianfeng,the parents of an elite rice hybrid Tian-you-hua-zhan显示文摘High-quality rice reference genomes have accelerated the comprehensive identification of genome-wide variations and research on functional genomics and breeding.Tian-you-hua-zhan has been a leading hybrid in China over the past decade.Here,de novo genome assembly strategy optimization for the rice indica lines Huazhan(HZ)and Tianfeng(TF),including sequencing platforms,assembly pipelines and sequence depth,was carried out.The PacBio and Nanopore platforms for long-read se-quencing were utilized,with the Canu,wtdbg2,SMARTdenovo,Flye,Canu-wtdbg2,Canu-SMARTdenovo and Canu-Flye assemblers.The combination of PacBio and Canu was optimal,considering the contig N50 length,contig number,assembled genome size and polishing process.The assembled contigs were scaffolded with Hi-C data,resulting in two“golden quality”rice reference genomes,and evaluated using the scaffold N50,BUSCO,and LTR assembly index.Furthermore,42,625 and 41,815 non-transposable element genes were annotated for HZ and TF,respectively.Based on our assembly of HZ and TF,as well as Zhenshan97,Minghui63,Shuhui498 and 9311,comprehensive variations were identified using Nipponbare as a reference.The de novo assembly strategy for rice we optimized and the“golden quality”rice genomes we produced for HZ and TF will benefit rice genomics and breeding research,especially with respect to uncovering the genomic basis of the elite traits of HZ and TF.Hui Zhang Yuexing Wang Ce Deng Sheng Zhao Peng Zhang Jie Feng Wei Huang Shujing Kang Qian Qian Guosheng Xiong Yuxiao Chang 2022Science China(Life Sciences)2022,65,2:2

9A female in vivo haploid-induction system via mutagenesis of egg cell-specific peptidases显示文摘Crop breeding schemes can be significantly accelerated by using(doubled)haploid plants.In vivo haploid induction has been applied in plant breeding for decades but is still not available for all crops and genotypes,and haploidization rates are generally very low.Therefore,methodological improvements to and new concepts for haploidization are required.Here,we report a novel system for the induction of haploid plants by mutating genes encoding egg cell-specific aspartic endopeptidases(ECSs).We show that after successful sperm–egg cell fusion,ECSs play a critical role to ensure male and female nucleus fusion after fertilization.The ecs1 ecs2 double mutant can induce haploids by both selfing and hybridization in Arabidopsis and ECS mutation is also capable of producing haploids in rice.In summary,our study develops a novel approach for maternal haploidization and provides new insights into the molecular basis of fertilization.Xuecheng Zhang Ce Shi Siling Li Bo Zhang Pan Luo Xiongbo Peng Peng Zhao Thomas Dresselhaus Meng-Xiang Sun 2023Molecular Plant2023,16,2:1

12Improving diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy with a medical food containing L-methylfolate: a preliminary report显示文摘Background:Homocysteine and vitamin D may play a role in the development of diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy in patients with diabetes mellitus(DM)and hypertension.Supplementing food with L-methylfolate and vitamin D theoretically may improve diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy,however,the outcome of these nutritional approaches has not been fully examined.A retrospective case review was done of cases of retinopathy reversal in patients on Ocufolin^(TM) and a similar nonprescription multivitamin,Eyefolate^(TM).In this study,they were administered L-methylfolate(2.7 mg and 3.0 mg,respectively)and vitamin D3(4500 IU each).These dosages are significantly above the RDA but well below levels associated with toxicity.Case presentation:Seven patients had nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy(NPDR)and some of them had hypertension.One patient had only hypertensive retinopathy.All patients were instructed to take Ocufolin^(TM)medical food as a food supplement.Baseline genetic testing for MTHFR polymorphisms was conducted.Fundus photography was used to document the fundus condition of the enrolled eyes in 8 NPDR patients at the initial and follow-up visits.Microaneurysms(MA)and exudates were observed to be improved in some trial patients.All subjects had one or more MTHFR polymorphisms.All had diabetic retinopathy,hypertensive retinopathy,or both.MAs were resolved,and exudates were decreased in 8/8 cases after taking the medical food.Retinal edema was found in 2/8 cases and improved or resolved in both cases after taking the medical food or the supplement.The best corrected visual activity was stable or improved in 8/8 cases.Conclusion:We report a series of diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy cases with MTHFR polymorphisms and the improvement of retinal microvasculature(mainly MAs)in serial fundus photography after taking a medical food or supplement containing L-methylfolate and vitamin D.It appears that the use of nutritional supplements and medical foods containing L-methylfolate and vitamin D may be effective in facilitating the improvement of diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy.Jianhua Wang Craig Brown Ce Shi Justin Townsend Giovana Rosa Gameiro Peng Wang Hong Jiang 2019Eye and Vision2019,6,1:1

17Spatiotemporal Distribution of Asian Horseshoe Crab Eggs Are Highly Intermingled with Anthropogenic Structures in Northern Beibu Gulf,China显示文摘Identification,protection and restoration of spawning habitats are vital for protecting the depleted species.Asian horseshoe crabs are ecologically important macroinvertebrates in coastal and estuarine ecosystems.However,their spawning habitat studies were limited to several reports in tropical regions,possibly due to the lack of modified survey methods,particularly in habitats with a lower density of spawning adults,and/or intermingled with anthropogenic structures.In this study,the year-round egg distribution and spawning habitat baselines of Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda and Tachypleus tridentatus were determined in the northern Beibu Gulf,China.Our findings demonstrated that the peak spawning occurred in June–July and ceased in November–January when the average water temperature dropped below 20℃.Egg aggregations were found<10 cm beneath the sediment surface with regular tidal inundation,regardless of seasonal changes,in the vicinity of natural and artificial structures with elevated,mildly sloping substratum within the high tide zones.The nests were characterized by medium-sized sediment grains(0.5–0.9 mm),high temperatures(31–34℃),low water contents(0.8%–0.9%),and total organic carbon contents(0.5%–0.7%),which might maximize the hatching success.The identified nesting beaches were close to nursery habitats for juveniles,and tidal creeks were present as the possible corridor connecting these two important habitats through the dominant mangrove forests.The findings provide valuable insights in the scope of spawning behavior and nest-site selection of Asian horseshoe crabs under a mixture of natural and artificial structures,which could benefit future management efforts for the exploited spawning populations.KWAN Kit Yue FU Yijian ZHONG Mufeng KUANG Yang BAI Haiwei ZHANG Ce ZHEN Wenquan XU Peng WANG Chun-Chieh ZHU Junhua 2022Journal of Ocean University of China2022,21,3:1

20Nutritional and medical food therapies for diabetic retinopathy显示文摘Diabetic retinopathy(DR)is a form of microangiopathy.Reducing oxidative stress in the mitochondria and cell membranes decreases ischemic injury and end-organ damage to the retina.New approaches are needed,which reduce the risk and improve the outcomes of DR while complementing current therapeutic approaches.Homocysteine(Hcy)elevation and oxidative stress are potential therapeutic targets in DR.Common genetic polymorphisms such as those of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase(MTHFR),increase Hcy and DR risk and severity.Patients with DR have high incidences of deficiencies of crucial vitamins,minerals,and related compounds,which also lead to elevation of Hcy and oxidative stress.Addressing the effects of the MTHFR polymorphism and addressing comorbid deficiencies and insufficiencies reduce the impact and severity of the disease.This approach provides safe and simple strategies that support conventional care and improve outcomes.Suboptimal vitamin co-factor availability also impairs the release of neurotrophic and neuroprotective growth factors.Collectively,this accounts for variability in presentation and response of DR to conventional therapy.Fortunately,there are straightforward recommendations for addressing these issues and supporting traditional treatment plans.We have reviewed the literature for nutritional interventions that support conventional therapies to reduce disease risk and severity.Optimal combinations of vitamins B1,B2,B6,L-methylfolate,methylcobalamin(B12),C,D,natural vitamin E complex,lutein,zeaxanthin,alpha-lipoic acid,and n-acetylcysteine are identified for protecting the retina and choroid.Certain medical foods have been successfully used as therapy for retinopathy.Recommendations based on this review and our clinical experience are developed for clinicians to use to support conventional therapy for DR.DR from both type 1 diabetes mellitus(T1DM)and type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)have similar retinal findings and responses to nutritional therapies.Ce Shi Peng Wang Shriya Airen Craig Brown Zhiping Liu Justin H.Townsend Jianhua Wang Hong Jiang 2020Eye and Vision2020,7,1:1
