| 2 | Super-hydrophobic characteristics of butterfly wing surface显示文摘Many biological surface are hydrophobic because of their complicated composition and surface microstructure. Eleven species (four families) of butterflies were selected to study their micro-, nano-structure and super-hydrophobic characteristic by means of Confocal Light Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Contact Angle Measurement. The contact an- gles of water droplets on the butterfly wing surface were consistently measured to be about 150 ? and 100 ? with and without the squamas, respectively. The dust on the surface can be easily cleaned by moving spherical droplets when the inclining angle is larger than 3 ?. It can be concluded that the butterfly wing surface possess a super-hydrophobic, water-repellent, self-cleaning, or “Lotus-effect”characteristic. The contact angle measurement of water droplets on the wing surface with and without the squamas showed that the water-repellent characteristic is a consequence of the microstructure of the squamas. Each water droplet (diameter 2 mm) can cover about 700 squamas with a size of 40 m×80 m of each squama. The regular riblets with a width of 1000 nm to 1500 nm are clearly observed on each single squama. (beautyberry) is one of the major genera in Verbenaceae, about 20 of which are medicinal plants. Beautyberry, called Zizhu in China, is a generic name of those species and largely used as hemostatic medicine. The Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2010 has admitted three new crude drugs from the genus of Callicarpa Linn. including Callicarpae Macrophyllae Folium, Callicarpae Caulis et Folium, and Callicarpae Formosanae Folium for the first time since the 1977 version of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. In order to better understand these new crude drugs, we systematically described their bibliography, admission reasons, botanical identification, chemistry, and pharmacology. | 4 | Relative position determination of a lunar rover using high-accuracy multi-frequency same-beam VLBI显示文摘Multi-frequency same-beam VLBI means that two explorers with a small separation angle are simultaneously observed with the main beam of receiving antennas. In the same-beam VLBI, the differential phase delay between two explorers and two receiving telescopes can be obtained with a small error of several picoseconds. The differential phase delay, as the observable of the same-beam VLBI, gives the separation angular information of the two explorers in the celestial sphere. The two-dimensional relative position on the plane-of-sky can thus be precisely determined with an error of less than 1 m for a distance of 3.8×105 km far away from the earth, by using the differential phase delay obtained with the four Chinese VLBI stations. | 5 | Mitosin/CENP-F is a conserved kinetochore protein subjected to cyto plasmic dynein-mediated poleward transport显示文摘Mitosin/CENP-F is a human nuclear protein transiently associated with the outer kinetochore plate in M phase and is involved in M phase progression. LEK1 and CMF1, which are its murine and chicken orthologs, however, are implicated in muscle differentiation and reportedly not distributed at kinetochores.We therefore conducted several assays to clarify this issue. The typical centromere staining patterns were observed in mitotic cells from both human primary culture and murine, canine, and mink cell lines. A C-terminal portion of LEK1 also conferred centromere localization. Our analysis further suggests conserved kinetochore localization of mammalian mitosin orthologs. Moreover, mitosin was associated preferentially with kinetochores of unaligned chromosomes. It was also constantly transported from kinetochores to spindle poles by cytoplasmic dynein. These properties resemble those of other kinetochore proteins important for the spindle checkpoint, thus implying a role of mitosin in this checkpoint. | 6 | Obesity, fatty liver and liver cancer显示文摘BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that obesity and fat- ty liver may be associated with the morbidity and mortality of liver cancer, and the early diagnosis and effective treat- ment of fatty liver coupled with liver cancer are supposed to improve the prognosis of obese patients. This review was attempted to understand the relationship between obesity, fatty liver and liver cancer. DATA RESOURCES: An English-language literature search using PUBMED (1990-2004) on obesity, fatty liver and liv- er cancer and other related articles in Chinese. RESULTS: Obesity is associated with the risk of death from all cancers and from cancers at individual sites including liv- er cancer, and it is an independent risk factor for hepatocel- lular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis and cryptogenic cirrhosis. Because nonalcoholic steatohe- patitis has been implicated as a major cause of cryptogenic cirrhosis, the development of HCC may be part of progres- sive nature of this condition. CONCLUSIONS: Obesity is associated with the incidence and mortality of HCC. | 7 | Spectroscopic evidence for triplet excitation energy transfer among carotenoids in the LH2 complex from photosynthetic bacterium Rhodopseudomonas palustris显示文摘The LH2 complex from Rhodopsudomonas (Rps.) palustris is unique in the heterogeneous carotenoid compositions. The dynamics of triplet excited state Carotenoids (3Car*) has been investigated by means of sub-microsecond time-resolved absorption spectroscopy both at physiological temperature (295 K) and at cryogenic temperature (77 K). Broad and asymmetric Tn←T1 transient absorption was observed at room temperature following the photo-excitation of Car at 532 nm, which suggests the contribution from various carotenoid compositions having different numbers of conjugated C=C double bonds (NC=C). The triplet absorption bands of different carotenoids, which superimposed at room temperature, could be clearly distinguished upon decreasing the temperature down to 77 K. At room temperature the shorter-wavelength side of the main Tn←T1 absorption band decayed rapidly to reach a spectral equilibration with a characteristic time constant of~1 μs, the same spectral dynamics, however, was not observed at 77 K. The aforementioned spectral dynamics can be explained in terms of the triplet-excitation transfer among heterogeneous carotenoid compositions. Global spectral analysis was applied to the time-resolved spectra at room temperature, which revealed two spectral components peaked at 545 and 565 nm, and assignable to the Tn←T1 absorption of Cars with NC=C=11 and NC=C=13, respectively. Surprisingly, the decay time constant of a shorter-con- jugated Car, I.e. 0.72 μs (aerobic) and 1.36 μs (anaerobic), is smaller than that of a longer-con- jugated Car, I.e. 2.12 μs (aerobic) and 3.75 μs (anaerobic), which is contradictory to the general rule of carotenoids and relative polyenes. The results are explained in terms of triplet-excitation transfer among different types of Cars. | 10 | Debrominated and methoxylated polybrominated diphenyl ether metabolites in rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss) after exposure to decabromodiphenyl ether显示文摘Decabromodiphenyl ether(BDE209) is the primary component in a commonly used flame retardant.Previous studies had proved that BDE209 itself was not toxic,while its metabolites including debrominated diphenyl ethers(De-BDEs) and methoxylated brominated diphenyl ethers(MeO-BDEs) posed a potential threat to organisms.Many studies had indicated that BDE209 could metabolize quickly in mammals,but lacking in the basic data about the metabolism of BDE209 in fish.In the present study,two replicate treatment groups of rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss) were exposed to BDE209 via a single intraperitoneal injection approximately 100 and 500 ng/g,respectively.Muscle,liver and blood samples were collected to analyze the specific metabolites on day 1 and day 28 post injection.The highest concentration of BDE209 was detected in muscle tissues,from 796.1 ng/g wet weight(day 1) to 687.1 ng/g wet weight(day 28) in high dose group,suggesting that BDE209 could accumulate slightly in muscle tissues.However,BDE209 was not detected in the blood for all treatments.Most congeners of De-BDEs were found in muscle and liver tissues,with the highest concentration in the liver.The main De-BDEs were nona-,octa-,hepta-and penta-De-BDEs.A total of seven MeO-BDE metabolites were observed among different fish tissues.Blood had the highest contribution of the MeO-BDE metabolites.Each MeO-BDE congener increased over the 28 days.These results in contrast to other studies suggested possible species-specific differences in metabolic abilities. | Chenglian Feng,Yiping Xu,Yue He,Qian Luo,Jinmiao Zha,Zijian Wang State Key Laboratory of Environmental Aquatic Chemistry,Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Beijing 100085,China. | 2010 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2010,22,9: | 4 |
| 11 | Origin of pit chains in the floor of lunar Copernican craters显示文摘There are small pit chains in the floor of lunar Copernican craters. They are usually so small in scale that there are few lunar spacecrafts to detect their detailed morphology. Combining camera data from Lunar Orbiter, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), Kaguya and Chang’e-1 missions, 5 representative large Copernican craters on various terrains of the lunar surface are chosen to study the origin of the pit chains in the crater floor. The morphology and distribution characteristic of the pit chains are referred by the high resolution images in this research. It is suggested that it is the magma activities from the subsurface magma layer combining with the existence of fractures and faults under the crater floor that leaded the formation of the pit chains. The model is further verified and discussed using the regolith thickness data in the crater floor. Our model suggests that the pit chains are still developing in the floor of the Copernican craters and the Moon may not be totally cold. Generally, bpe shows the unidentate coordination mode and serves as the terminal pendant, whereas the dicarboxylate ligands display various binding fashions to interlink the metal centers to form 1-D comb-like chain, ribbon, and fishbone arrays, as well as 2-D 44 and 4.82 layered networks. Notably, the bpe building block is also involved in secondary interactions such as hydrogen bonding and aromatic stacking to construct the resulting supramolecular architectures. And all the images thus obtained were subject to image-processing, which consisted of preliminary location of bands, cooperative tracking of lanesby correlation of adjacent bands, a precise densitometric pass, alignment at the marker bands with the standard,optional interactive editing, and normalization of the accepted bands. The contigs were generated based on the Computer Software specially designed for genome map ping. The number of contigs with 600 kb in length on average was 464; of contigs with 1000 kb in length on average was 107; of contigs with 1500 kb in length on average was 23. Therefore, all the contigs we have obtained amounted up to 420 megabases in length. Considering the size of rice genome (430 megabased), the contigs generated in this lab have covered nearly 98% of the rice genome.
