| 18 | The effects of hydrogen bonding on the shear viscosity of liquid water显示文摘As one of the fundamental physical properties of fluids, viscosity is considered to be the result of intermolecular forces and molecular momentum exchange. In this paper, we assume that hydrogen bonds, as the dominant intermolecular force, dominate the shear viscosity of liquid water and a relationship between the shear viscosity and hydrogen bonding is developed using dimensional analysis, which is further validated by computational chemistry methods. Water, methanol and ethanol are taken as examples to illustrate shear viscosity accounting for intermolecular forces and momentum exchange and their temperature dependence as a result of molecular thermal motions. The calculated shear viscosity of water is consistent with experimental data, which supports the idea that we can use the conceptual model to reveal the nature of shear viscosity. | Hongwei Fang Ke Ni Jian Wu Jun Li Lei Huang Danny Reible | 2019 | International Journal of Sediment Research2019,34,1: | 0 |
| 19 | Cathodic Hydrogen as Electron Donor in Enhanced Reductive Dechlorination显示文摘In situ capping is an attractive and cost-effective method for remediation of contaminated sediments, but few studies on enhancing contaminant degradation in sediment caps have been reported, especially for chlorinated benzenes.Electrically enhanced bioactive barrier is a new process for in situ remediation for reducible compounds in soil or sediments. The primary objective of this study is to determine if electrodes in sediment could create a redox gradient and provide electron acceptor/donor to stimulate degradation of chlorinated contaminant. The results demonstrate that graphite electrodes lead to sustainable evolution of hydrogen, displaying zero-order kinetics in the initial stages with different voltages. The constant rates of hydrogen evolution at 3,4,and 5 V are1.05,2.54,and 4.3 nmol·L 1·d 1,respectively.Even higher voltage can produce more hydrogen, but it could not keep long time because the over potentials on electrode surfaces prevent its function. The study shows that 4 V is more appropriate for hydrogen evolution. The measured and evaluated concentration of 1,2,3,5-tetrachlorobenzene in pore water of sediment and concentration of sulfate show that dechlorination is inhibited at higher concentration of sulfate. | 张瑞玲 路晓霞 Danny D. | 20 | Modeling multicomponent ion transport to investigate selective ion removal in electrodialysis显示文摘A 2-dimensional multicomponent ion transport model based on Nernst-Planck(NP)equation and electroneutrality assumption is developed for an electrodialysis(ED)cell operated in the ohmic regime. The flow in channels are assumed incompressible, isothermal, and laminar.Donnan equilibrium and flux continuity are considered at ionexchange membrane(IEM)-solution interfaces. To account for tortuosity effects inside membranes, effective ionic diffusion coefficients are calculated using membranes water volume fractions. The developed multicomponent model is used to elucidate the effects of feed solution properties, cell properties, system hydrodynamics, operational conditions, and membrane properties on selective divalent ion removal in the cell. The results indicate that the selective removal of divalent ions improves with decreasing the cell length, imposed potential, and ionic strength of feed water.Enhanced mixing in spacer-filled cell also promotes selective divalent ion removal.Higher concentrations of fixed charges on the membranes results in greater selectivity toward divalent ions at short cell length and low imposed potentials. With equal concentrations of fixed charges, membranes with high water content are less favorable for selective divalent ion removal. The developed framework enables the optimum selection of cell design,IEMs,spacer design, and operational conditions to selectively remove ions from multicomponent solutions. | Soraya Honarparvar Danny Reible | 2020 | Environmental Science and Ecotechnology2020,,1: | 0 |
