| 1 | Pathogenesis of achalasia cardia显示文摘Achalasia cardia is one of the common causes of motor dysphagia.Though the disease was first described more than 300 years ago,exact pathogenesis of this condition still remains enigmatic.Pathophysiologically,achalasia cardia is caused by loss of inhibitory ganglion in the myenteric plexus of the esophagus.In the initial stage,degeneration of inhibitory nerves in the esophagus results in unopposed action of excitatory neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine,resulting in high amplitude non-peristaltic contractions(vigorous achalasia);progressive loss of cholinergic neurons over time results in dilation and low amplitude simultaneous contractions in the esophageal body(classic achalasia).Since the initial description,several studies have attempted to explore initiating agents that may cause the disease,such as viral infection,other environmental factors,autoimmunity,and genetic factors.Though Chagas disease,which mimics achalasia,is caused by an infective agent,available evidence suggests that infection may not be an independent cause of primary achalasia.A genetic basis for achalasia is supported by reports showing occurrence of disease in monozygotic twins,siblings and other first-degree relatives and occurrence in association with other genetic diseases such as Down's syndrome and Parkinson's disease.Polymorphisms in genes encoding for nitric oxide synthase,receptors for vasoactive intestinal peptide,interleukin 23 and the ALADIN gene have been reported.However,studies on larger numbers of patients and controls from different ethnic groups are needed before definite conclusions can be obtained.Currently,the disease is believed to be multi-factorial,with autoimmune mechanisms triggered by infection in a genetically predisposed individual leading to degeneration of inhibitory ganglia in the wall of the esophagus. | Uday C Ghoshal Sunil B Daschakraborty Renu Singh | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,24: | 20 |

| 3 | Contribution of epigenetics in diabetic retinopathy显示文摘Diabetes has become the epidemic of the 21 st century, and with over 90% patients with diabetes becoming at a risk of developing retinopathy, diabetic retinopathy has emerged as a major public health concern. In spite of cutting edge research in the field, how retina and its vasculature are damaged by the diabetic milieu remains ambiguous. The environmental factors, life style or disease process can also bring in modifications in the DNA, and these epigenetic modifications either silence or activate a gene without altering the DNA sequence. Diabetic environment up- or downregulates a number of genes in the retina, and emerging research has shown that it also facilitates epigenetic modifications. In the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy, the genes associated with important enzymes(e.g., mitochondrial superoxide dismutase, matrix metalloproteinase-9 and thioredoxin interacting protein) and transcriptional factors are epigenetically modified, the enzymes responsible for these epigenetic modifications are either activated or inhibited, and the levels of micro RNAs are altered. | 4 | Antidiabetic activity of methanolic bark extract of Alhizia odoratissima Benth.in alloxan induced diabetic albino mice显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the antidiabetic potential of methanolic extract of Albizia odoratissima Benth.bark in alloxan induced diabetic mice.Methods:Group-Ⅰ(normal control) mice received only basal diet without any treatment.In Group-Ⅱ(Diabetic control) mice,diabetes was induced by alloxan(150 mg/kg i.p.) and received only Tween 80.5%v/v in normal saline. | 6 | Helicobacter pylori and gastric cancer: Indian enigma显示文摘Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) is a gram negative microaerophilic bacterium which resides in the mucous linings of the stomach. It has been implicated in the causation of various gastric disorders including gastric cancer. The geographical distribution and etiology of gastric cancer differ widely in different geographical regions and H. pylori, despite being labeled as a grade Ⅰ carcinogen, has not been found to be associated with gastric cancer in many areas. Studies in Asian countries such as Thailand, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabian countries, Israel and Malaysia, have reported a high frequency of H. pylori infection co-existing with a low incidence of gastric cancer. In India, a difference in the prevalence of H. pylori infection and gastric cancer has been noted even in different regions of the country leading to a puzzle when attempting to find the causes of these variations. This puzzle of H. pylori distribution and gastric cancer epidemiology is known as the Indian enigma. In this review we have attempted to explain the Indian enigma using evidence from various Indian studies and from around the globe. | 7 | Magnesium acetyltaurate prevents retinal damage and visual impairment in rats through suppression of NMDA-induced upregulation of NF-κB,p53 and AP-1(c-Jun/c-Fos)显示文摘Magnesium acetyltaurate(MgAT)has been shown to have a protective effect against N-methyl-D-aspartate(NMDA)-induced retinal cell apoptosis.The current study investigated the involvement of nuclear factor kappa-B(NF-κB),p53 and AP-1 family members(c-Jun/c-Fos)in neuroprotection by MgAT against NMDA-induced retinal damage.In this study,Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized to undergo intravitreal injection of vehicle,NMDA or MgAT as pre-treatment to NMDA.Seven days after injections,retinal ganglion cells survival was detected using retrograde labelling with fluorogold and BRN3A immunostaining.Functional outcome of retinal damage was assessed using electroretinography,and the mechanisms underlying antiapoptotic effect of MgAT were investigated through assessment of retinal gene expression of NF-κB,p53 and AP-1 family members(c-Jun/c-Fos)using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction.Retinal phospho-NF-κB,phospho-p53 and AP-1 levels were evaluated using western blot assay.Rat visual functions were evaluated using visual object recognition tests.Both retrograde labelling and BRN3A immunostaining revealed a significant increase in the number of retinal ganglion cells in rats receiving intravitreal injection of MgAT compared with the rats receiving intravitreal injection of NMDA.Electroretinography indicated that pre-treatment with MgAT partially preserved the functional activity of NMDA-exposed retinas.MgAT abolished NMDA-induced increase of retinal phospho-NF-κB,phospho-p53 and AP-1 expression and suppressed NMDA-induced transcriptional activity of NF-κB,p53 and AP-1 family members(c-Jun/c-Fos).Visual object recognition tests showed that MgAT reduced difficulties in recognizing the visual cues(i.e.objects with different shapes)after NMDA exposure,suggesting that visual functions of rats were relatively preserved by pre-treatment with MgAT.In conclusion,pre-treatment with MgAT prevents NMDA induced retinal injury by inhibiting NMDA-induced neuronal apoptosis via downregulation of transcriptional activity of NF-κB,p53 and AP-1-mediated c-Jun/c-Fos.The experiments were approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of Universiti Teknologi MARA(UiTM),Malaysia,UiTM CARE No 118/2015 on December 4,2015 and UiTM CARE No 220/7/2017 on December 8,2017 and Ethics Committee of Belgorod State National Research University,Russia,No 02/20 on January 10,2020. | Lidawani Lambuk Igor Iezhitsa Renu Agarwal Puneet Agarwal Anna Peresypkina Anna Pobeda Nafeeza Mohd Ismail | 2021 | Neural Regeneration Research2021,16,11: | 5 |
| 8 | Effect of nitrogen doping on structural and optical properties of ZnO nanoparticles显示文摘Infl uence of nitrogen doping on structural and optical properties of ZnO nanoparticles has been studied. Undoped and N doped ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized via chemical precipitation approach. The prepared samples were characterized through X-ray diffraction(XRD),Transmission electron microscopy(TEM) equipped with Energy dispersive X-ray(EDAX) spectroscopy, UV–visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy and micro-Raman spectroscopy(m RS). Wurtzite phase of undoped as well as 0.5–10% N doped ZnO nanoparticles was con fi rmed through characteristic XRD patterns. The particle size expansion due to N incorporation in ZnO was further revealed by TEM and EDAX analysis where 11 nm size undoped and 18–22 nm size 0.5–10% N doped ZnO(N:ZnO) nanoparticles without any impurity were ascertained. Slight blue-shift in band gap energy, as observed in our case, symbolized weak quantum con fi nement of the prepared nanoparticles. The alterations in vibrational modes of ZnO due to N incorporation, remarkably H substituting at O site and subsequently causing the passivation in N:ZnO nanoparticles, were detected through FTIR analysis. | 9 | A review of ecological risk assessment and associated health risks with heavy metals in sediment from India显示文摘Heavy metal(HM)pollution in sediment is a serious concern particularly in developing nations,warranting an extensive survey to understand the current situation and propose possible remedial measures.This paper compiles the data of HMs cadmium(Cd),iron(Fe),cobalt(Co),manganese(Mn),arsenic(As),lead(Pb),chromium(Cr),copper(Cu),zinc(Zn)and nickel(Ni)in aquatic sediment from India from 1979 to 2017.It was found that mean values of Cu,Co,Zn,Pb,As,and Cr in Indian sediment were high in comparison to the Australian Interim Sediment Quality Guidelines,World Surface Rock Average,and the Threshold Effect Level for freshwater ecosystems.Anthropogenic activities,lithogenic factors,and sand intrusion are the main factors associated with HM pollution as observed using cluster analysis and principal component analysis.The results of contamination indices indicate that HM contamination ranged from average to high,in the sediment.The ecological risk assessment results showed that 11%HMs present very high risk.The cancer risk,due to the high contents of Cd,As,and Cr the ingestion pathway,showed high risk of cancer through food/water contaminated with sediment.At source reduction of HMs in industrial effluents by effluent treatment plants,and plantation of phytoremediating rooted macrophytes in sediment may help in HM mitigation of the sediment. | Vinod Kumar Anket Sharma Shevita Pandita Renu Bhardwaj Ashwani Kumar Thukral Artemi Cerda | 2020 | International Journal of Sediment Research2020,35,5: | 4 |

| 12 | Taurine protects against retinal and optic nerve damage induced by endothelin-1 in rats via antioxidant effects显示文摘Endothelin-1(ET-1), a potent vasoconstrictor, is involved in retinal vascular dysregulation and oxidative stress in glaucomatous eyes. Taurine(TAU), a naturally occurring free amino acid, is known for its neuroprotective and antioxidant properties. Hence, we evaluated its neuroprotective properties against ET-1 induced retinal and optic nerve damage. ET-1 was administered intravitreally to Sprague-Dawley rats and TAU was injected as pre-, co-or post-treatment. Animals were euthanized seven days post TAU injection. Retinae and optic nerve were examined for morphology, and were also processed for caspase-3 immunostaining. Retinal redox status was estimated by measuring retinal superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione, and malondialdehyde levels using enzyme-linked immuosorbent assay. Histopathological examination showed significantly improved retinal and optic nerve morphology in TAU-treated groups. Morphometric examination showed that TAU pre-treatment provided marked protection against ET-1 induced damage to retina and optic nerve. In accordance with the morphological observations, immunostaining for caspase showed a significantly lesser number of apoptotic retinal cells in the TAU pre-treatment group. The retinal oxidative stress was reduced in all TAU-treated groups, and particularly in the pre-treatment group. The findings suggest that treatment with TAU, particularly pre-treatment, prevents apoptosis of retinal cells induced by ET-1 and hence prevents the changes in the morphology of retina and optic nerve. Following cellular stress, the intracellular concentration of Hsps generally increases several folds.Hsps undergo ATP-driven conformational changes to stabilize unfolded proteins or unfold them for translocationacross membranes or mark them for degradation. They are broadly classified in several families according to theirmolecular weights and functional properties. Extensive studies during the past few decades suggest that Hsps play avital role in both normal cellular homeostasis and stress response. Hsps have been reported to interact with numeroussubstrates and are involved in many biological functions such as cellular communication, immune response, proteintransport, apoptosis, cell cycle regulation, gametogenesis and aging. | 16 | The inner solar system cratering record and the evolution of impactor populations显示文摘We review previously published and newly obtained crater size-frequency distributions in the inner solar system. These data indicate that the Moon and the terrestrial planets have been bombarded by two populations of objects. Population 1,dominating at early times, had nearly the same size distribution as the present-day asteroid belt, and produced heavily cratered surfaces with a complex, multi-sloped crater size-frequency distribution. Population 2, dominating since about 3.8–3.7 Gyr,had the same size distribution as near-Earth objects(NEOs) and a much lower impact flux, and produced a crater size distribution characterized by a differential –3single-slope power law in the crater diameter range 0.02 km to 100 km. Taken together with the results from a large body of work on age-dating of lunar and meteorite samples and theoretical work in solar system dynamics, a plausible interpretation of these data is as follows. The NEO population is the source of Population 2 and it has been in near-steady state over the past ~ 3.7–3.8 Gyr; these objects are derived from the main asteroid belt by size-dependent non-gravitational effects that favor the ejection of smaller asteroids. However, Population 1 was composed of main belt asteroids ejected from their source region in a size-independent manner, possibly by means of gravitational resonance sweeping during orbit migration of giant planets;this caused the so-called Late Heavy Bombardment(LHB). The LHB began some time before ~3.9 Gyr, peaked and declined rapidly over the next ~ 100 to 300 Myr,and possibly more slowly from about 3.8–3.7 Gyr to ~2 Gyr.
