2An innovative approach to minimize excess sludge production in sewage treatment using integrated bioreactors显示文摘The present investigation deals with an application of integrated sequential oxic and anoxic bioreactor(SOABR) and fluidized immobilized cell carbon oxidation(FICCO) reactor for the treatment of domestic wastewater with minimum sludge generation. The performance of integrated SOABR-FICCO system was evaluated on treating the domestic wastewater at hydraulic retention time(HRT) of 3 hr and 6 hr for 120 days at organic loading rate(OLR)of 191 ± 31 mg/(L·hr). The influent wastewater was characterized by chemical oxygen demand(COD) 573 ± 93 mg/L; biochemical oxygen demand(BOD5) 197 ± 35 mg/L and total suspended solids(TSS) 450 ± 136 mg/L. The integrated SOABR-FICCO reactors have established a significant removal of COD by 94% ± 1%, BOD5 by 95% ± 0.6% and TSS by 95% ± 4% with treated domestic wastewater characteristics COD 33 ± 5 mg/L; BOD59 ± 0.8 mg/L and TSS 17 ± 9 mg/L under continuous mode of operation for 120 days. The mass of dry sludge generated from SOABR-FICCO system was 22.9 g/m^3. The sludge volume index of sludge formed in the SOABR reactor was 32 mL/g and in FICCO reactor it was 46 mL/g. The sludge formed in SOABR and FICCO reactor was characterized by TGA, DSC and SEM analysis. 3Anti-encystment and amoebicidal activity of Lonicera japonica Thunb. and its major constituent Chlorogenic acid in vitro显示文摘Objective:To examine the acanthamoebicidal effects of ethyl acetate,aqueous and butanol fractions of dried flower buds of Lonicera japonica(L.japonica) Thunb.(Flos Lonicerae) in vitro.Methods:Acanthamoeba triangularis isolates were obtained from environmental water samples and identified by PCR.They were exposed to ethyl acetate,water and butanol fractions of L.japonica Thunb.at concentrations ranging from 0.5 mg/m L to 1.5 mg/m L.The extracts were evaluated for growth inhibition at 24,48 and 72 h,respectively.Chlorogenic acid at a concentration of 1 mg/mL was examined for inhibition of encystment.Results:Ethyl acetate fraction at a concentration of 1.5 mg/mL evoked a significant reduction of trophozoite viability by 48.9% after 24 h,49.2% after 48 h and 33.7% after 72 h Chlorogenic acid,the major active constituent of L.japonica Thunb.at the concentration of 1 mg/mL reduced the cysts/trophozoite ratio by 100% after 24 h,84.0% after 48 h and 72.3% after 72 h.This phenolic compound at concentration of 1 mg/mL concurrent with 0.6% hydrogen peroxide inhibited hydrogen peroxide-induced encystment by 92.8% at 72 h.Conclusions:Results obtained from this study show that ethyl acetate fraction at 1.5 mg/m L is the most potent fraction of L.japonica Thunb.and its major constituent chlorogenic acid showed the remarkable inhibition of encystment at a concentration of 1 mg/mL.Tooba Mahboob Abdul-Majid Azlan Tian-Chye Tan Chandramathi Samudi Shamala Devi Sekaran Veeranoot Nissapatorn Christophe Wiart 2016Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2016,9,9:2
4Short-term impacts of biochar and manure application on soil labile carbon fractions,enzyme activity,and microbial community structure显示文摘Biochar is known to ameliorate soil fertility and increase crop yield;however,information regarding its effects on soil chemical and biological properties remains limited.The experiment was conducted to study the short-term impacts of dif-ferent types of biochar on soil C fractions,enzyme activities,and microbial community structure at depositional and eroded landscape positions at different sampling times[before planting,after planting,and after harvesting of soybean(Glycine max L.)].Three biochar materials,produced from C-optimized gasification of corn(maize,Zea mays L.)stover(CS),pon-derosa pine(Pinus ponderosa Lawson and C.Lawson)wood residue(PW),and switchgrass(Panicum virgatum L.)(SG),and dairy manure(DM)and mixture of dairy manure and pinewood biochar(DMP),were applied at a rate of 10 Mg ha^(−1) to depositional and eroded landscape positions.Data showed that the application of DMP and sole application of DM treat-ments significantly increased the labile C fractions at the depositional and eroded landscapes.The addition of DM and DMP increased the activities ofβ-glucosidase and urease enzymes,and those are involved in C and nitrogen cycling at depositional and eroded landscape positions.There were no significant differences between different biochar materials.However,there was an increase in soil microbial community structure in the DM and DMP treatments at both the landscape positions.In conclusion,our study revealed that DMP and sole application of DM influenced the soil labile C pool,enzyme activities,and microbial community structure at both the landscape positions for different sampling times.Saroop Sandhu Udayakumar Sekaran Ekrem Ozlu Nigel O.Hoilett Sandeep Kumar 2019Biochar2019,1,3:2
5Carbon nanomaterials for cardiovascular theranostics:Promises and challenges显示文摘Cardiovascular diseases(CVDs)are the leading cause of death worldwide.Heart attack and stroke cause irreversible tissue damage.The currently available treatment options are limited to“damage-control”rather than tissue repair.The recent advances in nanomaterials have offered novel approaches to restore tissue function after injury.In particular,carbon nanomaterials(CNMs)have shown significant promise to bridge the gap in clinical translation of biomaterial based therapies.This family of carbon allotropes(including graphenes,carbon nanotubes and fullerenes)have unique physiochemical properties,including exceptional mechanical strength,electrical conductivity,chemical behaviour,thermal stability and optical properties.These intrinsic properties make CNMs ideal materials for use in cardiovascular theranostics.This review is focused on recent efforts in the diagnosis and treatment of heart diseases using graphenes and carbon nanotubes.The first section introduces currently available derivatives of graphenes and carbon nanotubes and discusses some of the key characteristics of these materials.The second section covers their application in drug delivery,biosensors,tissue engineering and immunomodulation with a focus on cardiovascular applications.The final section discusses current shortcomings and limitations of CNMs in cardiovascular applications and reviews ongoing efforts to address these concerns and to bring CNMs from bench to bedside.Keshav Narayan Alagarsamy Sajitha Mathan Weiang Yan Alireza Rafieerad Saravanan Sekaran Hanna Manego Sanjiv Dhingra 2021Bioactive Materials2021,6,8:2
