| 5 | Continental-scale assessment of provisioning soil functions in Europe显示文摘Introduction:A framework is developed to link major soil functions to ecosystem services assessment.Provisioning soil functions—with primary linkages to ecosystem services—are evaluated on a continental scale in Europe.Methods:We defined major provisioning soil functions combining the approaches proposed by the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and the Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection of the European Union.Soil productivity was evaluated by three main land use types(cropland,grassland,forest)using a validated expert model called SoilProd.Models include soil,climate and topographic criteria.Raw material provision capacity of soils was assessed on the basis of(i)organic carbon content and(ii)availability of soil materials for construction.Results:A coherent system of soil function-based ecosystem services was compiled,taking into account major soil functions.We also produced new data on soil-based provisioning ecosystem services,including productivity and raw material availability.The attempts to cover the main human activities requiring materials of soil origin and to map the locations where those materials are available on a continental scale provide new insight to this field of research.Conclusions:Soil-based ecosystem services can be assessed by the evaluation of soil functions which play a role in the production of these services.Quantitative analysis and comparison of the spatial distribution of the investigated soil functions were performed.While crop productivity showed a general trend to increase in a northward and westward direction,local soil quality in most regions—except in the Mediterranean—can compensate for climatic handicaps to a great extent.Comparison of areas with potential for providing ecosystem services by individual soil functions highlights the complexity of decision-making for resource utilization but also the possibilities for optimization and more conscious management. | Gergely Tóth Ciro Gardi Katalin Bódis Éva Ivits Ece Aksoy Arwyn Jones Simon Jeffrey Thorum Petursdottir Luca Montanarella Institute for Environment and Sustainability Via Fermi | 2013 | Ecological Processes2013,2,1: | 1 |

| 9 | Development of a short duration method to assess the envelope thermal performance of multi-family housings显示文摘Building energy efficiency is a key factor in reducing CO_(2) emissions.For this reason,European Union(EU)member states have developed thermal regulations to ensure building thermal performance.These results are often based on results achieved with building simulation software during the design stage.However,the actual thermal performance can deviate significantly from the predicted one,and this difference is known as the energy performance gap.Accurate indicators of the actual thermal performance are a valuable tool to guarantee building quality.These indicators,including the heat transfer coefficient(HTC)and the heat loss coefficient(HLC),can be estimated by the application of in situ methods.As multi-family housing and tertiary sector buildings are an important part of the building stock,mature methods to measure their thermal performance are needed.This paper presents a short-duration method for assessing the HTC in large building typologies using a sampling approach.The method was applied in a four-storey building model under different conditions to study the limits of the method and to improve indicator bias and uncertainty.Indicator quality was strongly influenced by the external weather conditions,the temperature variation during the protocol and the heat exchange with the adjacent apartments.Under winter conditions and with stable indoor temperatures,the method had a high accuracy when the protocol was applied for half a day.It is recommended that the protocol be used over two days to improve indicator quality under less favorable test conditions. | Lorena de Carvalho Araujo Simon Thébault Laurent Mora Thomas Recht Alain Sempey Patrick Schalbart Michae Cohen | 2023 | Building Simulation2023,16,4: | 0 |
| 10 | Primitive to conventional geometry projection for efficient phonon transport calculations显示文摘The primitive Wigner-Seitz cell and corresponding first Brillouin zone(FBZ)are typically used in calculations of lattice vibrational and transport properties as they contain the smallest number of degrees of freedom and thus have the cheapest computational cost.However,in complex materials,the FBZ can take on irregular shapes where lattice symmetries are not apparent.Thus,conventional cells(with more atoms and regular shapes)are often used to describe materials,though dynamical and transport calculations are more expensive.Here we discuss an efficient anharmonic lattice dynamic method that maps conventional cell dynamics to primitive cell dynamics based on translational symmetries.Such symmetries have not been utilized in typical lattice dynamical calculations.This leads to phase interference conditions that act like conserved quantum numbers and a conservation rule for phonon scattering that is hidden in conventional dynamics which significantly reduces the computational cost.We demonstrate this method for phonon transport in a variety of materials with inputs from first-principles calculations and attribute its efficiency to reduced scattering phase space and fewer summations in scattering matrix element calculations. | Xun Li Simon Thébaud Lucas Lindsay | 2023 | npj Computational Materials2023,,1: | 0 |
