The evolution of plant reproductive ecology in China显示文摘Scientific interest in plant reproduction has a long and venerable history going back to early European naturalists including Carl Linnaeus,Christian Konrad Sprengel,Joseph Kölreuter,Fritz and Hermann Müller,George Henslow and of course,Charles Darwin.Darwin can be considered the founder of modern plant reproductive biology. His three books(Darwin 1862,1876,1877)laid the conceptual foundation for the field, and many of the ideas they contain are still topics of active research(reviewed in Barrett 2010).The turn of the 20th century saw the rediscovery of Mendel’s Laws and breeding experiments on flowering plants played an important role in establishing many key elements of modern genetics.By the 1940s,Fisher had developed the population genetic principles for theoretical analysis of the evolution of plant mating systems(Fisher 1941)。Spencer C.H.Barrett 2015Journal of Plant Ecology2015,8,2:2
Evolutionary breakdown of distyly to homostyly is accompanied by reductions of floral scent in Primula oreodoxa显示文摘Reproductive traits that function in pollinator attraction may be reduced or lost during evolutionary transitions from outcrossing to selfing.Although floral scent plays an important role in attracting pollinators in outcrossing species, few studies have investigated associations between floral scent variation and intraspecific mating system transitions. The breakdown of distyly to homostyly represents a classic example of a shift from outcrossing to selfing and provides an opportunity to test whether floral fragrances have become reduced and/or changed in composition with increased selfing. Here,we evaluate this hypothesis by quantifying floral volatiles using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in two distylous and four homostylous populations of Primula oreodoxa Franchet,a perennial herb from SW China. Our analysis revealed significant variation of volatile organic compounds(VOCs)among populations of P.oreodoxa.Although there was no difference in VOCs between floral morphs in distylous populations as predicted,we detected a substantial reduction in VOC emissions and the average number of scent compounds in homostylous compared with distylous populations.A total of 12 compounds, mainly monoterpenoids and sesquiterpenoids, distinguished homostylous and distylous morphs;of these,(E)-β-ocimene was the most important in contributing to the difference in volatiles, with significantly lower emissions in homostyles. Our findings support the hypothesis that the transition from outcrossing to selfing is accompanied by the loss of floral volatiles. The modification to floral fragrances in P.oreodoxa associated with mating system change might occur because high selfing rates in homostylous populations result in relaxed selection for floral attractiveness.Gui Zeng Spencer C.H.Barrett Shuai Yuan Dian-Xiang Zhang 2023Journal of Systematics and Evolution2023,61,3:0
Characterization of 24 microsatellite markers in Primula chungensis(Primulaceae),a distylous-homostylous species, using MiSeq sequencing显示文摘Primula chungensis is a species with considerable floral and mating-system variation, including distylous(outcrossing),homostylous(selfing) and mixed populations that contain both outcrossing and selfing forms. We isolated 24 microsatellite markers from P.chungensis using Illumina Mi Seq sequencing.Polymorphism and genetic diversity were then measured based on a sample of 24 individuals from a natural population in southern Tibet. All loci were polymorphic with the number of alleles per locus ranging from 2 to 4.The observed and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0 to 1 and 0.219 to 0.708,respectively.The microsatellite markers we have identified will serve as valuable tools for the investigation of the population genetic structure and phylogeography of P.chungensis and will inform models of the evolutionary history of mating systems in the species.Wei Zhou Haidong Li Zhikun Wu Spencer C.H.Barrett Dezhu Li Hong Wang 2016植物分类与资源学报2016,38,2:0
Evolutionary Genomics of Plant Gametophytic Selection显示文摘It has long been recognized that natural selection during the haploid gametophytic phase of the plant life cycle may have widespread importance for rates of evolution and the maintenance of genetic variation.Recent theoretical advances have further highlighted the significance of gametophytic selection for diverse evolutionary processes.Genomic approaches offer exciting opportunities to address key questions about the extent and effects of gametophytic selection on plant evolution and adaptation. Here,we review the progress and prospects for integrating functional and evolutionary genomics to test theoretical predictions, and to examine the importance of gametophytic selection on genetic diversity and rates of evolution. There is growing evidence that selection during the gametophyte phase of the plant life cycle has important effects on both gene and genome evolution and is likely to have important pleiotropic effects on the sporophyte. We discuss the opportunities to integrate comparative population genomics,genome-wide association studies, and experimental approaches to further distinguish how differential selection in the two phases of the plant life cycle contributes to genetic diversity and adaptive evolution.Felix E.G.Beaudry Joanna L.Rifkin Spencer C.H.Barrett Stephen I.Wright 2020Plant Communications2020,1,6:0
A new type of cell related to organ movement for selfing in plants显示文摘Many plants employ osmotic and hydrostatic pressure to generate movement for survival, but little is known about the cellular mechanisms involved. Here,we report a new cell type in angiosperms termed‘contractile cells’in the stigmas of the flowering plant Chirita pumila with a much-expanded rough endoplasmic reticulum(RER).Cryo-scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy analyses revealed that the RER is continuously distributed throughout the entirety of cells, confirmed by endoplasmic reticulum(ER)-specific fluorescent labeling, and is distinct from the common feature of plant ER.The RER is water-sensitive and extremely elongated with water absorption. We show that the contractile cells drive circadian stigma closing-bending movements in response to day-to-night moisture changes.RNA-seq analyses demonstrated that contractile cells have distinct molecular components.Furthermore, multiple microstructural changes in stigma movements convert an anti-selfing structure into a device promoting selfing-a unique cellular mechanism of reproductive adaptation for uncertain pollination environments.Yin-Zheng Wang Yan-Xiang Lin Qi Liu Jing Liu Spencer C.H.Barrett 2023National Science Review2023,10,9:0
Sexual dimorphism, temporal niche differentiation, and evidence for the Jack Sprat effect in an annual dioecious plant显示文摘Sexual dimorphism in dioecious plants often occurs as a consequence of the different resource requirements of females and males, especially during reproduction. The contrasting reproductive roles of the sexes can influence the phenology of growth, plant size, and flowering time, with implications for the intensity of competitive interactions within and between the sexes. Here,we investigate the influence of contrasting nutrient regimes and intra-sexual and inter-sexual competition on the expression of sexual dimorphism in life-history traits and biomass allocation throughout the life cycle of the dioecious annual Rumex hastatulus Baldw.(Polygonaceae).Development of a sex-specific marker enabled us to quantify the influence of competition on sex-specific dfferences in mortality and vegetative traits. We were particularly interested in determining whether the overall performance of the sexes might differ between the two forms of intra-specific competition, potentially providing evidence for sexual specialization in resource acquisition and niche differentiation. Our results indicated that although patterns of sexual dimorphism were dynamic, they were largely insensitive to nutrient conditions. We found that intra-sexual competition was more severe than inter-sexual competition, differentilly affecting mortality and most traits during the vegetative and particularly the reproductive stage of the life history.Female trait values generally increased more under inter-sexual than intra-sexual competition in comparison to males. Our findings are consistent with temporal niche differentiation resulting from sexual specialization for different resource requirements and provide evidence for the'Jack Sprat effect.'Qian Yu Spencer C.H.Barrett Xin-Jja Wang Li Zhong Hong Wang De-Zhu Li Wei Zhou 2022Journal of Systematics and Evolution2022,60,5:0
