2Clinically relevant factors associated with quantitative optical coherence tomography angiography metrics in deep capillary plexus in patients with diabetes显示文摘Background:To test clinically relevant factors associated with quantitative artifact-free deep capillary plexus(DCP)metrics in patients with diabetes mellitus(DM).Methods:563 eligible eyes(221 with no diabetic retinopathy[DR],135 with mild DR,130 with moderate DR,and 77 with severe DR)from 334 subjects underwent optical coherence tomography-angiography(OCT-A)with a swept-source OCT(Triton DRI-OCT,Topcon,Inc.,Tokyo,Japan).Strict criteria were applied to exclude from analysis those DCP images with artifacts and of poor quality,including projection artifacts,motion artifacts,blurriness,signal loss,B-scan segmentation error,or low-quality score.A customized MATLAB program was then used to quantify DCP morphology from the artifact-free DCP images by calculating three metrics:foveal avascular zone(FAZ),vessel density(VD),and fractal dimension(FD).Results:166(29.5%)eyes were excluded after quality control,leaving in the analysis 397 eyes(170 with no DR,101 with mild DR,90 with moderate DR,36 with severe DR)from 250 subjects.In the multiple regression models,larger FAZ area was associated with more severe DR(β=0.687;p=0.037),shorter axial length(AL)(β=−0.171;p=0.003),thinner subfoveal choroid thickness(β=−0.122;p=0.031),and lower body mass index(BMI)(β=−0.090;p=0.047).Lower VD was associated with more severe DR(β=−0.842;p=0.001),shorter AL(β=0.107;p=0.039),and poorer visual acuity(VA)(β=−0.133;p=0.021).Lower FD was associated with more severe DR(β=−0.891;p<0.001)and with older age(β=−0.142;p=0.004).Conclusions:Quantitative artifact-free DCP metrics are associated with VA,DR severity,AL,subfoveal choroidal thickness,age,and BMI in diabetic patients.The effects of ocular and systemic factors should be considered for meaningful interpretations of DCP changes in DM patients.Fang Yao Tang Erica O.Chan Zihan Sun Raymond Wong Jerry Lok Simon Szeto Jason C.Chan Alexander Lam Clement C.Tham Danny S.Ng Carol Y.Cheung 2020Eye and Vision2020,7,1:7
3Investigation of process parameters of electrohydrodynamic jetting for 3D printed PCL fibrous scaffolds with complex geometries显示文摘Tissue engineering is a promising technology in the field of regenerative medicine with its potential to create tissues de novo.Though there has been a good progress in this field so far,there still exists the challenge of providing a 3D micro-architecture to the artificial tissue construct,to mimic the native cell or tissue environment.Both 3D printing and 3D bioprinting are looked upon as an excellent solution due to their capabilities of mimicking the native tissue architecture layer-by-layer with high precision and appreciable resolution.Electrohydrodynamic jetting(E-jetting)is one type of 3D printing,in which,a high electric voltage is applied between the extruding nozzle and the substrate in order to print highly controlled fibres.In this study,an E-jetting system was developed in-house for the purpose of 3D printing of fibrous scaffolds.The effect of various E-jetting parameters,namely the supply voltage,solution concentration,nozzle-to-substrate distance,stage(printing)speed and solution dispensing feed rate on the diameter of printed fibres were studied at the first stage.Optimized parameters were then used to print Polycaprolactone(PCL)scaffolds of highly complex geometries,i.e.,semi-lunar and spiral geometries,with the aim of demonstrating the flexibility and capability of the system to fabricate complex geometry scaffolds and biomimic the complex 3D micro-architecture of native tissue environment.The spiral geometry is expected to result in better cell migration during cell culture and tissue maturation.Hui Wang Sanjairaj Vijayavenkataraman Yang Wu Zhen Shu Jie Sun Jerry Fuh Ying Hsi 2016International Journal of Bioprinting2016,2,1:4

9Climate extremes and ozone pollution:a growing threat to China’s food security显示文摘Ensuring global food security requires a sound understanding of climate and environmental controls on crop productivity.The majority of existing assessments have focused on physical climate vari-ables(i.e.,mean temperature and precipitation),but less on the increasing climate extremes(e.g.,drought)and their interactions with increasing levels of tropospheric ozone(O3).Here we quantify the combined impacts of drought and O3 on China’s crop yield using a comprehensive,process-based agricultural eco-system model in conjunction with observational data.Our results indicate that climate change/variability and O3 together led to an annual mean reduction of crop yield by 10.0%or 55 million tons per year at the national level during 1981-2010.Crop yield shows a growing threat from severe episodic droughts and in-creasing O3 concentrations since 2000,with the largest crop yield losses occurring in northern China,causing serious concerns in food supply security in China.Our results imply that reducing tropospheric O3 levels is critical for securing crop production in coping with increasing frequency and severity of extreme climate events such as droughts.Improving air quality should be a core component of climate adaptation strategies.Hanqin Tian Wei Ren Bo Tao Ge Sun Art Chappelka Xiaoke Wang Shufen Pan Jia Yang Jiyuan Liu Ben SFelzer Jerry MMelillo John Reilly 2016Ecosystem Health and Sustainability2016,2,1:1
