1An experimental study of the incipient bed shear stress partition in mobile bed channels filled with emergent rigid vegetation显示文摘This paper investigates the bed shear stress based on the condition of the incipient motion of sediment in a uniform-flow flume covered with emergent rigid vegetation,which is represented by arrays of circular cylinders arranged in a regular pattern.A total of 148 tests are performed to observe the influence of the vegetation density,bed slope,flow depth and sediment size on the bed shear stress.The tests reveal that when the sediment is in incipient motion,the resistances acting on the flow passing the rigid vegetation contain the vegetation resistance and the bed shear stress.This shear stress could be divided into two parts:the grain shear stress and the shear stress caused by sand dunes,which are the deformed bedform with the sediment incipient motion.An empirical relationship between the shear stress of the sand dune and vegetation density,the Froude number,the apparent vegetation layer velocity is developed.WANG Hao TANG HongWu YUAN SaiYu LV ShengQi ZHAO XuanYu 2014Science China(Technological Sciences)2014,57,6:10
2Large-eddy simulation of the generation and propagation of internal solitary waves显示文摘A modified large-eddy simulation model,the dynamic coherent eddy model(DCEM)is employed to simulate the generation and propagation of internal solitary waves(ISWs)of both depression and elevation type,with wave amplitudes ranging from small,medium to large scales.The simulation results agree well with the existing experimental data.The generation process of ISWs is successfully captured by the DCEM method.Shear instabilities and diapycnal mixing in the initial wave generation phase are observed.The dissipation rate is not equal at different locations of an ISW.ISW-induced velocity field is analyzed in the present study.The structure of the bottom boundary layer(BBL)of internal wave packets is found to be different from that of a single ISW.A reverse boundary jet instead of a separation bubble exists behind the leading internal wave while separation bubbles appear in other parts of the wave-induced velocity field.The boundary jet flow resulting from the adverse pressure gradients has distinctive dynamics compared with free shear jets.ZHU Hai WANG LingLing TANG HongWu 2014Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2014,57,6:6
3A novel dynamic coherent eddy model and its application to LES of a turbulent jet with free surface显示文摘We has developed a novel dynamic coherent eddy model,in which the coherent structure-Q criterion introduced by Hunt et al(1988)-is taken into account in the subgrid-scale turbulent viscosity based on the eddy viscosity model.One proposed method is to combine the resolved-scale velocity-gradient tensor in the classical Smagorinsky model with Q criterion weighted.A kind of dynamic procedure which was averaged in a general process at temporal direction based on the autocorrelations of the characteristic resolved scales of turbulence was taken for the coefficient of subgrid model.The model is implemented in the σ-coordinate and the filtered Navier-Stokes equations are solved by the operator splitting method.The validation was explored to 2-D turbulent slot jet both in ambient environment and in regular waves.The prediction of the present model was compared with the experiment data,including the averaged velocity profiles,the velocity fluctuations and the Reynolds stress.The model performance is shown to be satisfactory.LU Jun,TANG HongWu,WANG LingLing & PENG Feng College of water conservancy of hydro-power engineering,Hohai University,Nanjing 210098,China 2010Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2010,53,9:6
4Clear-water local scouring around three piers in a tandem arrangement显示文摘Experiments of local scouring around three piers were carried out under steady clear-water conditions. We investigated the role of pier spacing and flow rate in scour depth and progression. The scour-hole depth around the upstream pier was the same as that for single piers and independent of pier spacing. The scour behavior of the middle and downstream piers progressed through a synchronous scouring region, a transition region, and a radical deviation region as the fluid velocity increased. The critical velocity from the synchronous scouring region to the transition region for the middle and downstream piers was the same, which linearly increased with pier spacing. The degree of deviation in the radical deviation region for the middle and downstream piers was dependent on the pier spacing. The critical velocity from the transition region to the radical deviation region for the middle pier increased with the pier spacing. When the spacing was larger than 11 times the diameter of a pier, the scour depths of the three-pier configuration were the same as for the single piers, which indicates the limit of inter-pier fluid–structure interaction. 5Particle size distribution of bed materials in the sandy river bed of alluvial rivers显示文摘The particle size distribution of bed materials in the sandy river bed of alluvial rivers is important in the study of topics such as friction, river bed evolution, erosion, and siltation. It also can reflect the dependency relation between river bed sediment and flow intensity. In this paper, the critical pattern of sediment movement in the near-wall region of a sandy river bed was analyzed. According to the principle of momentum balance, the critical settling-rising condition of bed material in a sandy river bed was found to be instantaneous turbulent velocity equal to 2.7 times the sediment settling velocity in quiescent water. Based on a vertical instantaneous turbulent velocity with a Gaussian distribution, a theoretical relation for calculating the particle size distribution of bed materials in a sandy river bed without pre-known characteristic grain sizes was developed by solving a stochastic equation. The formula is verified using measured data, and the results show that the proposed formula was in accordance with the measured data. 6Swimming behavior of juvenile silver carp near the separation zone of a channel confluence显示文摘Knowledge of locomotion of fish near river confluences is important for prediction of fish distribution in a river network.The flow separation zone near the confluence of a river network is a favorite habitat and feeding place for silver carp,which is one of the four major species of Chinese carp and usually provides positive rheotaxis to water flow.In the current study,a series of laboratory experiments were done to determine the behavioral responses of juvenile silver carp to the hydrodynamic forces near the separation zone of a channel confluence.The locomotion and trajectory of juvenile silver carp were recorded by infrared thermal imaging,while the flow velocity field near the separation zone was measured by a Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV)system.A total of 60 juvenile silver carp were released near the separation zone among which 40 carp swam in the upstream direction.Amongst them,24 carp swam to the tributary and the remaining 16 swam into the main channel.Almost all these 24 carp travelled initially along the boundary of the separation zone near the corner,where flow shear was strongest,and then swam to the tributary.Instead of avoiding zones of strong vorticity,they chose and followed a trajectory along which the flow vorticity was large.On encountering these vortical flows,they increased the tailbeat frequency and decreased the tail-beat amplitude to maintain body stability.These observations provide important knowledge on locomotion of fish near river confluences and are beneficial for the fish habitat protection.Saiyu Yuan Lei Xu Hongwu Tang Yang Xiao Colin Whittaker 2022International Journal of Sediment Research2022,37,1:2

12Experimental study of the settling of twin spherical particles released side by side: The impact of particle size, fluid viscosity, initial spacing, and particle density显示文摘The settling of solid particles in a fluid is an important process that needs to be considered in many fields of research.For example,the interactions among particles and between particles and the surrounding fluid are important topics in studying suspended sediment transport and water clarification.In this paper,the settling processes and interactions of twin spherical particles released side by side were experimentally studied.The Reynolds number varied in the range of 1-300,which is within the transition zone.Particle Tracking Velocimetry(PTV)and Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV)were utilized to capture the settlement trajectory,and provide insight into the flow fields around the particles.The influences of particle size,fluid viscosity,initial spacing,and particle density on the settling process were systematically investigated.The experimental results reveal that the initial spacing between the twin particles(l_(0)*)and the Reynolds number(Re)are the two most important factors affecting particle settling.The interaction between particles comprises only repulsion when the initial spacing is small,while the density of particles has little effect on the final settling state when the initial spacing is not very small.The flow fields around different particles are similar for the same Re,leading to similar final settlement behaviors,except for the case of l_(0)*=0,when the influence of particle rotation cannot be ignored.Except for the case of l_(0)*=0,although the particle density has little effect on the final settling behavior,it affects the repulsive process during settling.The final repulsive distance between the twin particles is highly dependent on Re and l_(0)*.Two critical Re values exist(~10 and~100),where the repulsive distance is negatively correlated with Re when Re<10,but it is positively correlated with Re when Re>100.However,the repulsive distance is always negatively correlated with l_(0)*.These findings can improve understanding of more complex phenomena such as the particle group settling process and sediment transport.Yang Xiao Jieqing Liu Pei Zhang Jian Zhou Dongfang Liang Zhihao Wang Taotao Zhang Saiyu Yuan Hongwu Tang 2023International Journal of Sediment Research2023,38,1:1

19Temporal variations of sediment and morphological characteristics at a large confluence accounting for the effects of floodplain submergence显示文摘The large confluence between the Yangtze River and the outflow channel of Poyang Lake is receiving attention due to its importance in flood control and ecological protection in the Yangtze River basin.There is a large floodplain along the outflow channel of Poyang Lake,which is submerged during high flow and dry during low flow.The effects of the submergence of this floodplain on sediment and morphological characteristics at this large confluence have not been known.Hence,a field investigation was done in March 2019(relatively high flow,Survey 3)to complement the previous field studies done in August(high flow,Survey 1)and December 2018(low flow,Survey 2)to identify the temporal variations of sediment and morphological characteristics considering the submergence of this large floodplain.The predominant sediment transport modes were wash load for Poyang Lake and confluence particles and mixed bedload/suspended load for the Yangtze River particles.The sediment transport processes were largely affected by both the secondary flows and the water density contrast between the tributaries with a lock-exchange sediment rich,denser flow moving across the inclined mixing interface in Surveys 1 and 2.The sediment flux across the mixing interface was weakened in Survey 3 when the density contrast was very small.The stagnation zone near the confluence apex had a low sediment concentration and played a role in preventing the sediment flux exchange between the two flows,and its size,and,thus,its importance as a barrier to sediment mixing were related to the submergence of the floodplain.The bed morphology with the local scour holes at the confluence was largely affected by the large-size helical cells,and this kind of effect was weakened as the secondary flows got restricted in Survey 3.The current results expand the database and knowledge on the sediment transport and morphological features of large river confluences.Kun Li Hongwu Tang Saiyu Yuan Lei Xu Yang Xiao Carlo Gualtieri 2022International Journal of Sediment Research2022,37,5:0
