| 1 | Climate change impacts on streamflow,water quality,and best management practices for the Shell and Logan Creek Watersheds in Nebraska,USA显示文摘Improvements in the management of water,sediment,and nutrients under future climatic conditions are needed to ensure increased crop and livestock production to meet greater global needs and the future availability of water for competing demands and protection against adverse water quality impairments.This study determined the impacts of future climate change scenarios on streamflow,water quality,and best management practices(BMPs)for two watersheds in Nebraska,USA.The Soil and Water Assessment Tool(SWAT)was employed to simulate streamflow,sediment,total nitrogen(N)and total phosphorus(P)from the Shell Creek Watershed near Columbus,Nebraska and the Logan Creek Watershed near Sioux City,Iowa.Available streamflow and water quality records for the two watersheds were used to calibrate model parameters that govern streamflow,sediment,and nutrient responses in SWAT.For each watershed,precipitation,air temperature,and CO2 concentrations were input to SWAT for four climatic conditions:a baseline condition for the 1980 to 2000 period and the SRES A2,A1B,and B1 climate scenarios for a future period from 2040 to 2059.Findings from this study suggest that under the three future climate change scenarios,sediment losses are expected to be about 1.2 to 1.5 times greater than the baseline condition for Shell Creek and 2 to 2.5 times greater for Logan Creek;total N losses are expected to be about 1.2 to 1.4 times greater for Shell Creek and 1.7 to 1.9 times greater for Logan Creek.Relative to the baseline,total P losses under the future climate scenarios are projected to be about the same for Shell Creek and 1.5 to 1.7 times greater for Logan Creek.Findings from this study also suggest that future projected increases in both precipitation and CO2 concentration account for net increases in streamflow,but in different ways on each watershed. | Michael W.Van Liew Song Feng Tapan B.Pathak | 2012 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2012,5,1: | 2 |

The independent effects of light and temperature on photosynthesis and respiration are well studied in single leaves, but are less well studied in whole plants. The short and long term influence of light and temperature on carbon use efficiency is also poorly understood, and is commonly modeled to remain constant over a wide range of conditions. We sought to determine the primary effects of changing light at two growth temperatures on photosynthesis, respiration, and their balance, as defined by carbon use efficiency. Methods We separated respiration into growth and maintenance components using whole-canopy gas-exchange in an elevated CO2 environment in a controlled environment, and supplemented that information with tissue analysis. Important findings Decreases in light level decreased carbon use efficiency through a reduction in the maintenance coefficient, increased the growth coefficient, and reduced partitioning of N in protein. | 17 | Is clinically measured knee range of motion after total knee arthroplasty‘good enough?’:A feasibility study using wearable inertial measurement units to compare knee range of motion captured during physical therapy versus at home显示文摘Total knee arthroplasty is highly successful,in part due to range of motion(RoM)recovery.This is typically estimated goniometrically/visually by physical therapists(PTs)in the clinic,which is imprecise.Accordingly,a validated inertial measurement unit(IMU)method for capturing knee RoM was deployed assessing postoperative RoM both in and outside of the clinical setting.The study's objectives were to evaluate the feasibility of continuously capturing knee RoM pre-/post-op via IMUs,dividing data into PT/non-PT portions of each day,and comparing PT/non-PT metrics.We hypothesized IMU-based clinical knee RoM would differ from IMU-based knee RoM captured outside clinical settings.10 patients(3 M,69±13 years)completed informed consent documents following ethics board approval.A validated IMU method captured long duration(8–12 h/day,~50 days)knee RoM pre-/post-op.Post-op metrics were subdivided(PT versus non-PT).Clinical RoM and patient reported outcome measures were also captured.Compliance and clinical disruption were evaluated.ANOVA compared post-op PT and non-PT means and change scores.Maximum flexion during PT was less than outside PT.PT stance/swing RoM and activity level were greater than outside PT.No temporal variable differences were found PT versus non-PT.IMU RoM measurements capture richer information than clinical measures.Maximum PT flexion was likely less than non-PT due to the exercises completed(i.e.high passive RoM vs.low RoM gait).PT gait flexion likely exceed non-PT because of‘white coat effects’wherein patients are closely monitored clinically.This implies data captured clinically represents optimum performance whereas data captured non-clinically represents realistic performance. | Ryan M.Chapman Wayne E.Moschetti Douglas W.Van Citters | 2021 | Medicine in Novel Technology and Devices2021,,3: | 1 |
