Effects of Inlet Circumferential Fluctuation on the Sweep Aerodynamic Performance of Axial Fans/Compressors显示文摘Swept blades have been widely used in the transonic fan/compressor of aircraft engines with the aids of 3D CFD simulation since the design concept of controlling the shock structure was firstly proposed and successfully tested by Dr.Wennerstrom in the 1980s.However,some disadvantage phenomenon has also been induced by excessively 3D blade geometries on the structure stress insufficiency, vibration and reliability.Much confusion in the procedure of design practice leading us to recognize a new view on the flow mechanism of sweep aerodynamical induction: the new radial equilibrium established by the influence of inlet circumferential fluctuation(CF) changes the inlet flows of blading and induces the performance modification of axial fans/compressors blade. The view is verified by simplified models through numerical simulation and circumferentially averaged analysis in the present paper. The results show that the CF source items which originate from design parameters, such as the spanwise distributions of the loading and blading geometries, contribute to the changing of averaged incidence spanwise distribution, and further more affect the performance of axial fans/compressors with swept blades.Xingmin Gui Fang Zhu Ke Wan Donghai Jin 2013Journal of Thermal Science2013,22,5:8
Optimization of endwall contouring in axial compressor S-shaped ducts显示文摘This paper presents a numerical investigation of the potential aerodynamic benefits of using endwall contouring in a fairly aggressive duct with six struts based on the platform for endwall design optimization. The platform is constructed by integrating adaptive genetic algorithm(AGA), design of experiments(DOE), response surface methodology(RSM) based on the artificial neural network(ANN), and a 3D Navier–Stokes solver. The visual analysis method based on DOE is used to define the design space and analyze the impact of the design parameters on the target function(response).Optimization of the axisymmetric and the non-axisymmetric endwall contouring in an S-shaped duct is performed and evaluated to minimize the total pressure loss. The optimal ducts are found to reduce the hub corner separation and suppress the migration of the low momentum fluid. The non-axisymmetric endwall contouring is shown to remove the separation completely and reduce the net duct loss by 32.7%.Jin Donghai Liu Xiwu Zhao Weiguang Gui Xingmin 2015Chinese Journal of Aeronautics2015,28,4:7
Application and Comparison of SST Model in Numerical Simulation of the Axial Compressors显示文摘The shear-stress transport(SST)turbulence model is incorporated into Navier-Stokes equations to simulate a turbomachinery flowfield.A staggered finite volume method is used to make the mean flow equations and turbulence model equations strongly coupled and enhance the stability of the numerical computation. The implicit treatment of the source terms is applied to the SST model.A steady state solution is obtained using five-stage Runge-Kutta time-stepping scheme with local time stepping and residual smoothing to accelerate convergence. The wall distance d,a key parameter in the SST model,is solved by a partial differential equation. The validations of the code are conducted on rotor 37,wp11 at design and off-design conditions by comparison with measurements and the Spalart-Allmaras(SA)turbulence model. The flow within the tip is calculated with a multi-block grid.YIN Song~1,JIN Donghai~2,GUI Xingmin~3 and ZHU Fang Aero-Engines Simulation Research Center,School of Jet Propulsion,Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Beijing,100191,China 2010Journal of Thermal Science2010,19,4:7
Influence of Non-Axisymmetric Terms on Circumferentially Averaged Method in Fan/Compressor显示文摘The governing equations are derived by circumferentially averaging the three-dimensional(3D) Navier-Stokes equations, which are solved using a time marching finite volume approach. Both Euler throughflow model and Navier-Stokes(N-S) throughflow model are employed to investigate the performance and flow fields of a highly loaded transonic single-stage fan ATS-2 and a four-stage fan.The results are compared with the experimental and three-dimensional computational results. It shows that the throughflow models can provide reasonable performance characteristics and N-S throughflow model gives better predictions in endwall regions.A throughflow computation n in which all the non-axisymmetric terms are included has been performed at off-design condition and the radial distributions of the flow field can be well described.Ke Wan Hailiang Jin Donghai Jin Xingmin Gui 2013Journal of Thermal Science2013,22,1:7
Corner Flow Control in High Through-Flow Axial Commercial Fan/Booster Using Blade 3-D Optimization显示文摘This study is aimed at using blade 3-D optimization to control corner flows in the high through-flow fan/booster of a high bypass ratio commercial turbofan engine. Two kinds of blade 3-D optimization, end-bending and bow, are focused on. On account of the respective operation mode and environment, the approach to 3-D aerodynamic modeling of rotor blades is different from stator vanes. Based on the understanding of the mechanism of the corner flow and the consideration of intensity problem for rotors, this paper uses a variety of blade 3-D optimization approaches, such as loading distribution optimization, perturbation of departure angles and stacking-axis manipulation, which are suitable for rotors and stators respectively. The obtained 3-D blades and vanes can improve the corner flow features by end-bending and bow effects. The results of this study show that flows in corners of the fan/booster, such as the fan hub region, the tip and hub of the vanes of the booster, are very complex and dominated by 3-D effects. The secondary flows there are found to have a strong detrimental effect on the compressor performance. The effects of both end-bending and bow can improve the flow separation in corners, but the specific ways they work and application scope are somewhat different. Redesigning the blades via blade 3-D optimization to control the corner flow has effectively reduced the loss generation and improved the stall margin by a large amount.Fang Zhu Donghai Jin Xingmin Gui 2012Journal of Thermal Science2012,21,1:6
Investigation of Non-Axisymmetric Endwall Contouring in a Compressor Cascade显示文摘The current paper presents experimental and computational results to assess the effectiveness of non-axisymmetric endwall contouring in a compressor linear cascade. The endwall was designed by an endwall design optimization platform at 0° incidence(design condition). The optimization method is based on a genetic algorithm. The design objective was to minimize the total pressure losses. The experiments were carried out in a compressor cascade at a low-speed test facility with a Mach number of 0.15. Four nominal inlet flow angles were chosen to test the performance of non-axisymmetric Contoured Endwall(CEW). A five-hole pressure probe with a head diameter of 2 mm was used to traverse the downstream flow fields of the flat-endwall(FEW) and CEW cascades. Both the measured and predicted results indicated that the implementation of CEW results in smaller corner stall, and reduction of total pressure losses. The CEW gets 15.6% total pressure loss coefficient reduction at design condition, and 22.6% at off-design condition(+7° incidence). And the mechanism of the improvement of CEW based on both measured and calculated results is that the adverse pressure gradient(APG) has been reduced through the groove configuration near the leading edge(LE) of the suction surface(SS).LIU Xiwu JIN Donghai GUI Xingmin 2017Journal of Thermal Science2017,26,6:5
Effect of blade sweep on inlet flow in axial compressor cascades显示文摘This paper presents comparative numerical studies to investigate the effects of blade sweep on inlet flow in axial compressor cascades. A series of swept and straight cascades was modeled in order to obtain a general understanding of the inlet flow field that is induced by sweep.A computational fluid dynamics(CFD) package was used to simulate the cascades and obtain the required three-dimensional(3D) flow parameters. A circumferentially averaged method was introduced which provided the circumferential fluctuation(CF) terms in the momentum equation.A program for data reduction was conducted to obtain a circumferentially averaged flow field. The influences of the inlet flow fields of the cascades were studied and spanwise distributions of each term in the momentum equation were analyzed. The results indicate that blade sweep does affect inlet radial equilibrium. The characteristic of radial fluid transfer is changed and thus influencing the axial velocity distributions. The inlet flow field varies mainly due to the combined effect of the radial pressure gradient and the CF component. The axial velocity varies consistently with the incidence variation induced by the sweep, as observed in the previous literature. In addition, factors that might influence the radial equilibrium such as blade camber angles, solidity and the effect of the distance from the leading edge are also taken into consideration and comparatively analyzed.Chang Hao Zhu Fang Jin Donghai Gui Xingmin 2015Chinese Journal of Aeronautics2015,28,1:5
Modeling and Numerical Investigation of the Inlet Circumferential Fluctuationsof Swept and Bowed Blades显示文摘The circumferential fluctuation(CF) source terms induced by the inviscid blade force can affect the inlet distribution of flow parameters and radial equilibrium of swept and bowed blades. However, these phenomena cannot be adequately described by throughflow methods based on the axisymmetric assumption. A transport model for the CF stresses is proposed and correlated to the distribution of circulation to reflect the effect of the inviscid blade force. To investigate the effect of the inlet CFs on swept and bowed blades, the model is integrated into a throughflow model and applied to a series of cascades with different sweep and bow angles. For swept cascades, the CF source terms change the distributions of incidence angles, as well as the radial equilibrium at the inlet of the blade passage. And the influence is enhanced as the absolute value of the sweep angle increases. For bowed cascades, the distributions of incidence angles are also altered. For both cases, the model can offer a good prediction of the inlet CF source terms, and prove to exert a better prediction of blade design key parameters such as flow angles.TANG Mingzhi JIN Donghai GUI Xingmin 2017Journal of Thermal Science2017,26,1:4
Numerical Investigation of Base-Setting of Stator's Stagger Angles for a 15-stage Axial-Flow Compressor显示文摘A 15-stage axial-flow compressor utilized in steel industry was studied in this paper. All the stator's stagger angles of the compressor are variable to ensure the multistage compressor operate effectively within a wide range of flow rate and meanwhile satisfy the demand for sufficient pressure ratio, adiabatic efficiency and stall margin. Three in all different base-settings of stator's stagger angles were presented and commercial CFD software was applied to obtain the overall performance characteristics. The results showed that both of the optimized base-settings improved the performances both in summer and winter conditions, although the adiabatic efficiency was somewhat decreased. Taking incidence angle and stage loading into consideration, differences among the three cases were analyzed in detail. On the basis of numerical computations, the performance could be effectively improved through adjusting the base-setting of stator's stagger angles.CHANG Hao ZHAO Weiguang JIN Donghai PENG Zeyan GUI Xingmin 2014Journal of Thermal Science2014,23,1:3
Particle Image Velocimetry Experimental and Computational Investigation of a Blood Pump显示文摘Blood pumps have been adopted to treat heart failure over the past decades.A novel blood pump adopting the ro-tor with splitter blades and tandem cascade stator was developed recently.A particle image velocimetry (PIV) experiment was carried out to verify the design of the blood pump based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and further analyze the flow properties in the rotor and stator. The original sized pump model with an acrylic housing and an experiment loop were constructed to perform the optical measurement. The PIV testing was car-ried out at the rotational speed of 6952±50 r/min with the flow rate of 3.1 l/min and at 8186±50 r/min with 3.5 l/min,respectively.The velocity and the Reynolds shear stress distributions were investigated by PIV and CFD,and the comparisons between them will be helpful for the future blood pump design.Xiaochen Yang Xingmin Gui Hui Huang Yongbin Shen Ziwen Yu Yan Zhang 2012Journal of Thermal Science2012,21,3:2
Blade bowing effects on radial equilibrium of inlet flow in axial compressor cascades显示文摘The circumferentially averaged equation of the inlet flow radial equilibrium in axial compressor was deduced. It indicates that the blade inlet radial pressure gradient is closely related to the radial component of the circumferential fluctuation(CF) source item. Several simplified cascades with/without aerodynamic loading were numerically studied to investigate the effects of blade bowing on the inlet flow radial equilibrium. A data reduction program was conducted to obtain the CF source from three-dimensional(3D) simulation results. Flow parameters at the passage inlet were focused on and each term in the radial equilibrium equation was discussed quantitatively. Results indicate that the inviscid blade force is the inducement of the inlet CF due to geometrical asymmetry. Blade bowing induces variation of the inlet CF, thus changes the radial pressure gradient and leads to flow migration before leading edge(LE) in the cascades. Positive bowing drives the inlet flow to migrate from end walls to mid-span and negative bowing turns it to the reverse direction to build a new equilibrium. In addition, comparative studies indicate that the inlet Mach number and blade loading can efficiently impact the effectiveness of blade bowing on radial equilibrium in compressor design.Han XU Hao CHANG Donghai JIN Xingmin GUI 2017Chinese Journal of Aeronautics2017,30,5:2
Investigation and Verification of the Aerodynamic Performance of a Fan/Booster with Through-flow Method显示文摘Through-flow method is still widely applied in the revolution of the design of a turbomachinery, which can provide not merely the performance characteristic but also the flow field. In this study,a program based on the through-flow method was proposed, which had been verified by many other numerical examples. So as to improve the accuracy of the calculation, abundant loss and deviation models dependent on the real geometry of engine were put into use, such as: viscous losses, overflow in gaps, leakage from a flow path through seals. By means of this program, the aerodynamic performance of a certain high through-flow commercial fan/booster was investigated. On account of the radial distributions of the relevant parameters, flow deterioration in this machine was speculated. To confirm this surmise, 3-D numerical simulation was carried out with the help of the NUMECA software. Through detailed analysis, the speculation above was demonstrated, which provide sufficient evidence for the conclusion that the through-flow method is an essential and effective method for the performance prediction of the fan/booster.LIU Xiaoheng JIN Donghai GUI Xingmin 2018Journal of Thermal Science2018,27,2:1

Numerical Investigation of the Load Distribution between the Main Blade and the Splitter Blade in a High-Loading Centrifugal Compressor显示文摘In the traditional design of the centrifugal compressor, the splitter blade and the main blade always keep the same shape. However,to enable high efficiency of the high-loading centrifugal compressor, the matching of design parameters of the splitter blade and the main blade needs to be optimized. In this paper, the influence of the load distribution between the main blade and the splitter blade on the aerodynamic performance, the flow field, and the internal vortices of a high-loading centrifugal compressor were studied by means of CFD prediction.Four cases with different values of the variable CR which is defined as the load-ratio of splitter blade to main blade were set up.In each case, the splitter blade and the main blade were shaped according to different laws of circulation distribution(_(r)V_(u))while the average circulation of the splitter blade and the main blade at any meridional position were consistent with that of the prototype. The results showed that a proper reduction of the load-ratio of splitter blade to main blade is beneficial to suppress the leakage vortex of the splitter blade and reduce the scale of the wake in the channel near the suction-side of the splitter blade, which consequently improves the flow uniformity at the impeller outlet and enhances the aerodynamic performance of both the stage and the component. The stage isentropic efficiency of the optimal case was found to be 0.7%higher than that of the prototype and the stage total pressure ratio was also improved. The optimal value of CR,which in this investigation is 94%,is supposed to be the result of the trade-off between the development of the wake and the leakage vortices in adjacent two channels. The optimization of the load distribution between the main blade and the splitter blade provides an opportunity to further improve the high-loading centrifugal compressor performance.OU Jun JIN Donghai GUI Xingmin 2022Journal of Thermal Science2022,31,5:1
Numerical investigation and modeling of sweep effects on inlet flow field of axial compressor cascades显示文摘Swept blades are widely utilized in transonic compressors/fans and provide high load, high through-flow,high efficiency, and adequate stall margin. However, there is limited quantitative research on the mechanism of the effect of swept blades on the flow field, resulting in a lack of direct quantitative guidance for the design and analysis of swept blades in fans/compressors.To better understand this mechanism, this study employs a reduced-dimensional force equilibrium method to analyze more than 1500 swept cascades data. Results verify that circumferential fluctuation terms are responsible for inducing radial migration in the inlet airflow field of the swept blade, resulting in variations in the incidence angle and consequently leading to changes in the characteristics of the swept blade. Thus,a combination of simple functions and machine learning is utilized to model the circumferential fluctuation terms and quantify the sweep mechanism. The prediction accuracy of the model is high, with coefficient of determination greater than 0.95 on the test set. When the model is applied in a meridional flow analysis program, the calculation accuracy of the program for the incidence angle is improved by 0.4°and 0.6°at the design and off-design conditions respectively, compensating for the program’s original deficiencies.Meanwhile, the model can also provide quantitative guidance for the design of swept blades, thereby reducing the number of design iterations and improving design efficiency.Jiancheng ZHANG Donghai JIN Xingmin GUI 2024Chinese Journal of Aeronautics2024,37,2:0
A spanwise loss model for axial compressor stator based on machine learning显示文摘In the early stage of aircraft engine design, the through-flow method is an important tool for designers. The accuracy of the through-flow method depends heavily on the accuracy of the loss model. However, most existing models cannot(or cannot well) provide the spanwise loss distribution. To construct an effective spanwise loss model, both turbomachinery knowledge and machine learning skills were used in this paper. A large number of numerical simulations were carried out to build a database containing more than 1000 compressor cascade numerical samples. Secondary flow intensity was introduced as the independent variable to carry out feature engineering. A model containing a selector based on support vector machine regression and estimators based on K-nearest neighbor regression was constructed. Numerical test set and design data of two former highpressure core compressors were used for validation. Results suggest that the spanwise loss model show good consistency with both numerical test set and data of two former compressors. It can reflect the influence of secondary flow and can also predict both value and trend of total pressure loss coefficient well, with mean absolute error general around or less than 1% and R^(2)(coefficient of determination) more than 0.8 on the test set. Especially when dealing with loss coefficient at midspan position, the model shows even better performance, with R^(2)over 0.97 on the test set. And the selector of the model can well classify the samples, predict the intensity of secondary flow and help estimators to capture the phenomenon that end-wall secondary flow extends to the mid-span.Zixuan YUE Chenghua ZHOU Donghai JIN Xingmin GUI 2022Chinese Journal of Aeronautics2022,35,11:0
Static pressure redistribution mechanism of non-axisymmetric endwall based on radial equilibrium显示文摘Non-axisymmetric endwall contouring has been proved to be an effective flow control technique in turbomachinery.Several different flow control mechanisms and qualitative design strategies have been proposed. The endwall contouring mechanism based on the flow governing equations is significant for exploring the quantitative design strategies of the nonaxisymmetric endwall contouring. In this paper, the static pressure redistribution mechanism of endwall contouring was explained based on the radial equilibrium equation.A quantified expression of the static pressure redistribution mechanism was proposed.Compressor cascades were simulated using an experimentally validated numerical method to validate the static pressure redistribution mechanism.A geometric parameter named meridional curvature(Cme)is defined to quantify the concave and convex features of the endwall. Results indicate that the contoured endwall changes the streamline curvature, inducing a centrifugal acceleration.Consequently, the radial pressure gradient is reformed to maintain the radial equilibrium. The convex endwall represented by positive Cme increases the radial pressure gradient, decreasing the endwall static pressure, while the concave endwall represented by negative Cme increases the endwall static pressure. The Cme helps to establish the quantified relation between the change in the endwall radial pressure gradient and the endwall geometry.Besides, there is a great correlation between the distributions of the Cme and the change in the endwall static pressure. It can be concluded that the parameter Cme can be considered as a significant parameter to parameterize the endwall surface and to explore the quantitative design strategies of the nonaxisymmetric endwall contouring.Hanwen Guo Donghai Jin Xiwu Liu Xingmin Gui 2023Propulsion and Power Research2023,12,4:0
Numerical and experimental investigation of quantitative relationship between secondary flow intensity and inviscid blade force in axial compressors显示文摘The secondary flow attracts wide concerns in the aeroengine compressors since it has become one of the major loss sources in modern high-performance compressors. But the research about the quantitative relationship between secondary flow and inviscid blade force needs to be more detailed. In this paper,a database of 889 three-dimensional linear cascades was built. An indicator, called Secondary Flow Intensity(SFI),was used to express the loss caused by secondary flow. The quantitative relationship between the SFI and inviscid blade force deterioration was researched.Blade oil flow and Computation Fluid Dynamics(CFD)results of some cascades were also used to cross-validate.Results suggested that all numerical cascade cases can be divided into 3 clusters by the SFI,which are called Clusters A,B and C in the order of the increasing SFI indicator. The corner stall, known as the strong corner separation, only happens when the SFI is high. Both calculations and oil flow experiments show that the SFI would stay at a low level if the vortex core at the endwall surface does not appear. The strong interaction of Kutta condition and endwall cross-flow is considered the dominant mechanism of higher secondary flow losses, rather than the secondary flow penetration depth on the suction surface. In conclusion, the inviscid blade force spanwise deterioration is strongly related to the SFI.The correlation of the SFI and spanwise inviscid blade force deterioration is given in this paper. The correlation could provide a quantitative reference for estimating secondary flow losses in the design.Chenghua ZHOU Zixuan YUE Hanwen GUO Xiwu LIU Donghai JIN Xingmin GUI 2023Chinese Journal of Aeronautics2023,36,10:0
