| 1 | The oasis expansion and eco-environment change over the last 50 years in Manas River Valley, Xinjiang显示文摘The oasis expansion and economic development of the Manas River Valley is one of the most successful examples in Xinjiang. In this paper, the oasis spatial distribution pattern and dynamic change were examined using imageries of Landsat MSS, TM and ETM, land use and topographic maps in six different periods (such as 1949, 1962, 1976, 1989, 1999 and 2001) over the last 50 years in the valley. The oasis expansion process could be divided into two stages according to the annual rate of oasis area increase, the fast oasization stage (from 1949 to 1976) when the oasis area ex-panded from 156.385 km2 in 1949 to 3,639.491 km2 in 1976 because of rapidly increased population and quickly enlarged farmland area; and the urbanization stage (from 1976 to 2001) when the ex-pansion ratio of farmland slowed down, and the urbanization process quickened, the total oasis area reached 5042.440 km2 in 2001. With the continuous expansion of oasis and farmland, a large quantity of river water was drawn into irrigation ditch and plain lakes, so only a small quantity of river water could flow into lakes, as a result, the Manas Lake dried up, salization and basification problems happened in the low-lying oasis region. The natural swamp around the lake was shrunk greatly and biodiversity decreased significantly. The driving force analysis reveals that human activities, such as reclamation and population growth, played a major role in the oasis expansion and ecological dete-rioration in the Manas River Valley. Pits tend to collect and hold wandering cavitation bubbles. The air holding phenomenon of pits can be a destination of the incubation period in the process of cavitation erosion. The holding bubble tends to eject micro-bubbles from the top of holding cavitation bubble, making the pit a source of nuclei. With bubbles being held in pits, the diameters of pits increase rapidly. But in the given experiment condition, there is a specific stable value beyond which the diameter of pits will not increase. | 3 | Vegetation dynamics induced by groundwater fluctuations in the lower Heihe River Basin,northwestern China显示文摘Aims Since 2000,the environmental flow controls project has been implemented in the lower Heihe River Basin,a typical arid inland river basin in northwest China,to restore the deteriorated ecological environment in this region.The aim of this study was to explore the impacts of groundwater fluctuations on vegetation dynamics.Our results can be used as a reference for water resources planning and management to maintain proper environmental flows in arid areas.Methods The location(by Global Positioning System)and depth of the monitoring wells,as well as groundwater table depth and salinity were measured in situ at each site from July to August 2009.Based on the measurements of the groundwater table depth and salinity following the implementation of environmental flow controls project(EFCP)in the lower Heihe River Basin,the groundwater fluctuations during the period from 2001 to 2009 were analyzed.Descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation were used to analyze the relationship between vegetation changes and groundwater table fluctuations.Additionally,the spatial distributions of the groundwater table depth and salinity were interpolated using the simple kriging method.Trend analysis was applied to the time series of integrated Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer normalized difference vegetation index data to identify interannual vegetation dynamics.The relationship between vegetation status and groundwater environment was investigated at different spatial scales by analyzing and comparing the time series and trends.Important Findings(i)The groundwater table and salinity increased significantly in most of the study area with spatial heterogeneity.On average,the groundwater table rose;0.5 and 1.5 m in the upper and lower Ejina Basin,respectively,and the groundwater salinity increased across the study area by 0–4%.(ii)A notable correlation between the vegetation status and the groundwater table was revealed when the groundwater table depth fluctuated between 1.8 and 3.5 m,whereas the vegetation did not show an obvious response to groundwater table changes when the groundwater table depth was more than 5–6 m.(iii)Vegetation restoration mainly occurred in riparian areas within 500–1000 m of from natural rivers,where the groundwater table depth varied from 2 to 4 m,and salinity was<5%,whereas vegetation degradation appeared at some locations where groundwater environment had deteriorated. | Ping Wang Yichi Zhang Jingjie Yu Guobin Fu Fei Ao | 2011 | Journal of Plant Ecology2011,4,1: | 10 |

| 5 | Validation of a HRGC–ECNI/LRMS method to monitor short-chain chlorinated paraffins in human plasma显示文摘Short-chain chlorinated paraffins(SCCPs) are produced in high volume and have the high potential to pose a threat to human health. However, little information is available for SCCP contamination in human blood/plasma/serum, mainly due to the difficulty of sample preparation and quantitative analysis. A method using high resolution gas chromatography coupled with electron capture negative ionization low resolution mass spectrometry(HRGC–ECNI/LRMS) was developed and validated to measure SCCPs in human plasma. The pretreatment process included protein denaturation and lipid elimination, liquid–liquid extraction with a mixture of n-hexane/dichloromethane(1:1, V/V), and cleanup on a multilayer silica column. The blank controls, including procedural blank, vacuum blood collection tube blank, and instrumental blank, were the most pivotal points for the reliable analysis of SCCPs. The average value of procedural blanks was 9.0 ng/g; and the method detection limit(MDL), calculated as the sum of the average procedural blank value and 3 times of the standard deviation of the procedural blanks, was 12.6 ng/g plasma. The validated method was applied to measure the concentrations of the total SCCPs(∑ SCCPs) in50 plasma samples from a general population. | 6 | The effect of environmental factors on spatial variability in land use change in the high-sediment region of China's Loess Plateau显示文摘In areas with topographic heterogeneity, land use change is spatially variable and influenced by climate, soil properties, and topography. To better understand this variability in the high-sediment region of the Loess Plateau in which soil loss is most severe and sediment diameter is larger than in other regions of the plateau, this study builds some indicators to identify the characteristics of land use change and then analyze the spatial variability as it is affected by climate, soil property, and topography. We build two indicators, a land use change intensity index and a vegetation change index, to characterize the intensity of land use change, and the degree of vegetation restoration, respectively. Based on a subsection mean method, the two indicators are then used to assess the spatial variability of land use change affected by climatic, edaphic, and topographic elements. The results indicate that: 1) Land use changed significantly in the period 1998–2010. The total area experiencing land use change was 42,302 km2, accounting for 22.57%of the study area. High-coverage grassland, other woodland, and forest increased significantly, while low-coverage grassland and farmland decreased in 2010 compared with 1998. 2) Land use change occurred primarily west of the Yellow River, between 35 and 38 degrees north latitude. The four transformation types, including(a) low-coverage grassland to medium-coverage grassland,(b) medium-coverage grassland to high-coverage grassland,(c) farmland to other woodland, and(d) farmland to medium-coverage grassland, were the primary types of land use change, together constituting 60% of the area experiencing land use change. 3) The spatial variability of land use change was significantly affected by properties of dryness/wetness, soil conditions and slope gradient. In general, land use changed dramatically in semi-arid regions, remained relativelystable in arid regions, changed significantly in clay-rich soil, remained relatively stable in clay-poor soil, changed dramatically in steeper slopes, and remained relatively stable in tablelands and low-lying regions. The increase in vegetation coincided with increasing changes in land use for each physical element. | 7 | Practical high-performance lead-free piezoelectrics:structural flexibility beyond utilizing multiphase coexistence显示文摘Due to growing concern for the environment and human health, searching for high-performance lead-free piezoceramics has been a hot topic of scientific and industrial research. Despite the significant progress achieved toward enhancing piezoelectricity, further efforts should be devoted to the synergistic improvement of piezoelectricity and its thermal stability. This study provides new insight into these topics.A new KNN-based lead-free ceramic material is presented, which features a large piezoelectric coefficient(d33) exceeding 500 pC/N and a high Curie temperature(Tc) of ~200℃. The superior piezoelectric response strongly relies on the increased composition-induced structural flexibility due to lattice softening and decreased unit cell distortion. In contrast to piezoelectricity anomalies induced via polymorphic transition, this piezoelectricity enhancement is effective within a broad temperature range rather than a specific small range. | 8 | Characterization of mechanical properties of aluminum cast alloy at elevated temperature显示文摘The tensile response, the low cycle fatigue(LCF) resistance, and the creep behavior of an aluminum(Al) cast alloy are studied at ambient and elevated temperatures.A non-contact real-time optical extensometer based on the digital image correlation(DIC)is developed to achieve strain measurements without damage to the specimen. The optical extensometer is validated and used to monitor dynamic strains during the mechanical experiments. Results show that Young's modulus of the cast alloy decreases with the increasing temperature, and the percentage elongation to fracture at 100℃ is the lowest over the temperature range evaluated from 25℃ to 300℃. In the LCF test, the fatigue strength coefficient decreases, whereas the fatigue strength exponent increases with the rising temperature. The fatigue ductility coefficient and exponent reach maximum values at 100℃. In this study, we use an optimal Monte Carlo simulation and dynamic conditioning to construct a fracture network model. We found the optimal Monte Carlo simulation to effectively reduce the error associated with the Monte Carlo method and use dynamic conditioning to ensure the consistency of the model with the actual distribution of fractures on the excavation faces and outcrops. We applied this novel approach to a hydropower station on the Jinshajiang River, China.
