Early Oligocene anatexis in the Yardoi gneiss dome, southern Tibet and geological implications显示文摘The Yardoi gneiss dome is located to the easternmost of the North Himalayan Gneiss Dome (NHGD),southern Tibet. It consists of metapelite, garnet amphibolite, granite and leucogranite, and is a key subject to constrain the formation and tectonic evolution of NHGD. SHRIMP zircon U/Pb data on the leucogranite yield an age of 35.3±1.1 Ma,which is substantially older than that of the similar leu-cogranites to the west. Sr and Nd isotope systematics indicate that this leucogranite was derived from partial melting of the mixed garnet amphibolite and metapelite. Our data suggest that (1) during the early stage of Himalayan magmatism, amphibolite dehydration melting overwhelmed that of the metapelite; and (2) such a melting at middle-lower crust might be a major factor that initiated the movement along the Southern Tibetan Detachment System (STDS). | ZENG LingSen LIU Jing GAO LiE XIE KeJia WEN Li | 2009 | Chinese Science Bulletin2009,54,1: | 61
Partial melting of deeply subducted continental crust and the formation of quartzofeldspathic polyphase inclusions in the Sulu UHP eclogites显示文摘Two types of quartzofeldspathic inclusions hosted by omphacite and garnet were identified in the Sulu UHP eclogites. The first consists of albite, quartz, and various amounts of K-feldspar. In contrast, the second consists predominantly of K-feldspar and quartz without any albite. The presence of quart-zofeldspathic inclusions within the UHP mafic eclogites indicates that partial melting occurred in deeply subducted continental crust via mica dehydration melting reactions at an early stage of rapid exhumation. Such a melting event generated hydrous Na-K-Al-Si melts. These melts infiltrated into the mafic eclogite and were captured by recrystallizing garnet or omphacite, which together followed by dehydration and crystallization to form feldspar-bearing polyphase inclusions. Formation of silicate melts within the deeply subducted continental slab not only provides an excellent medium to transport both mobile (LILE) and immobile (HFSE) elements over a large distance, but also induces effective changes in the physical properties of the UHP slab. This process could be a major factor that enhances rapid exhumation of a deeply subducted continental slab. | ZENG LingSen LIANG FengHua ASIMOW Paul CHEN FangYuan CHEN JJng | 2009 | Chinese Science Bulletin2009,54,15: | 27
Eocene high grade metamorphism and crustal anatexis in the North Himalaya Gneiss Domes,Southern Tibet显示文摘Determination of the timing and geochemical nature of early metamorphic and anatectic events in the Himalayan orogen may provide key insights into the physical and chemical behavior of lower crustal materials during the early stage of tectonic evolution in large-scale collisional belts. The Yardoi gneiss dome is the easternmost dome of the North Himalayan Gneiss Domes(NHGD),and contains three types of amphibolites with distinct mineral assemblage, elemental and radiogenic isotope geochemistry,as well as various types of gneisses.SHRIMP zircon U/Pb analyses on the garnet amphibolite and garnet-bearing biotite granitic gneiss yield ages of nearly peak metamorphism at 45.0±1.0 Ma and 47.6±1.8 Ma,respectively, which are 2 to 4 Ma older than the age for partial melting in migmatitic garnet amphibolite(43.5±1.3 Ma).Available data have demonstrated that ultra-high pressure metamorphism in the Tethyan Himalaya occurred at ~55 Ma,and high amphibolite facies to granulite facies metamorphism at 45 to 47 Ma.In addition, partial melting at thickened crustal conditions occurred at 43.5±1.3 Ma,which led to the formation of high Sr/Y ratios two-mica granites. The high-grade metamorphic rocks in the NHGD may represent the subducted front of the Indian continental lithosphere. In large collisional belts, fertile components in crustal materials could melt and form granitic melts with relatively high Na/K and Sr/Y ratios under thickened crustal conditions, significantly different from those formed by decompressional melting during rapid exhumation. | GAO LiE ZENG LingSen XIE KeJia | 2012 | Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,6: | 23
Episodic crustal anatexis and the formation of Paiku composite leucogranitic pluton in the Malashan Gneiss Dome, Southern Tibet显示文摘The Paiku composite leucogranitic pluton in the Malashan gneiss dome within the Tethyan Himalaya consists of tourmaline leucogranite,two-mica granite and garnet-bearing leucogranite.Zircon U-Pb dating yields that(1)tourmaline leucogranite formed at28.2±0.5 Ma and its source rock experienced simultaneous metamorphism and anatexis at 33.6±0.6 Ma;(2)two-mica granite formed at 19.8±0.5 Ma;(3)both types of leucogranite contain inherited zircon grains with an age peak at^480 Ma.These leucogranites show distinct geochemistry in major and trace elements as well as in Sr-Nd-Hf isotope compositions. As compared to the two-mica granites, the tourmaline ones have higher initial Sr and zircon Hf isotope compositions, indicating that they were derived from different source rocks combined with different melting reactions.Combined with available literature data,it is suggested that anatexis at^35 Ma along the Himalayan orogenic belt might have triggered the initial movement of the Southern Tibetan Detachment System(STDS),and led to the tectonic transition from compressive shortening to extension.Such a tectonic transition could be a dominant factor that initiates large scale decompressional melting of fertile high-grade metapelites along the Himalayan orogenic belt.Crustal anatexis at^28 Ma and^20 Ma represent large-scale melting reactions associated with the movement of the STDS. | GAO LiE ZENG LingSen HOU KeJun GUO ChunLi TANG SuoHan XIE KeJia HU GuYue WANG Li | 2013 | Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,28: | 23
Barite in omphacite-hosted K-feldspar + quartz poly-crystalline aggregates from the Sulu eclogites and its implications显示文摘K-feldspar + quartz polycrystalline aggregates were found as sub-millimeter-size inclusions with a pseudomorph after coesite (?) in omphacites from a number of Sulu eclogites. In these aggregates, round or subhedral barites occur as tiny inclusions in either K-feldspar or quartz. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analyses show that these barites have (1) 33.86%―41.12% SO3, 0%―34.65% SrO, and 24.12%―63.55% BaO, (2) seemingly negative linear correlations between SrO and BaO, indicating that they are ideal solid solutions of barite (BaSO4) and celestite (SrSO4), and (3) highly variable Sr/Ba molar ratios ranging from 0 to 2.1. Presence of barites in the Sulu eclogites not only indicates oxidation of the subducting continental crust, but also very limited and restricted fluids pre- sented during exhumation of the Sulu UHP eclogites. | ZENG LingSen LIU FuLai LIANG FengHua CHEN FangYuan | 2007 | Chinese Science Bulletin2007,52,21: | 13
Neoproterozoic magmatism in eastern Himalayan terrane显示文摘Geochronological investigation on gneisses of granitic to leucogranitic compositions in Cuona, south Tibet, reveal that their protoliths formed at 808.8 ± 7.9-816.4 ± 3.4 Ma and 855.8 ± 7.0 Ma,respectively.Zircon rims from the granitic gneiss record a metamorphic age of 739.4 ± 4.3 Ma.Lu-Hf isotopic analyses on zircon grains with Neoproterozoic ages yield negative ε_(Hf)(t) values from-9.0 to-4.2,and the corresponding two-stage Hf model ages are 1965-2228 Ma.Whole-rock geochemical data indicate that all granitic gneisses are K-riched calc-alkali series. These new data together with literature data show that(1) the Himalayan terrane experienced an episode of Neoproterozoic magmatism at 850-800 Ma;(2) the Neoproterozoic magma of granitic compositions were derived from partial melting of ancient crusts, possibly due to the thermal perturbation related with the breakup of the Rodinia supercontinent. | Yuhua Wang Lingsen Zeng Li-E Gao Chunli Guo Kejun Hou Lifei Zhang Wei Wang Huiyi Sun | 2017 | Science Bulletin2017,62,6: | 5
Spatio-temporal variation in rock exhumation linked to large-scale shear zones in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau显示文摘Crustal-scale shear zones are believed to have played an important role in the tectonic and landscape evolution of orogens. However, the variation of long-term rock exhumation between the interior of shear zones and adjacent regions has not been documented in detail. In this study, we obtained new zircon U-Pb, biotite ^(40)Ar/^(39)Ar, zircon and apatite(U-Th)/He data, and conducted inverse thermal history modeling from two age-elevation profiles(the Pianma and Tu'er profiles) in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau. Our goal is to constrain the exhumation history of the Gaoligong and Chongshan shear zones and adjacent regions, so as to explore the effect of the shear zones on exhumation and their thermal effect on cooling that should not be ignored. Our results suggest that during the interval of 18–11 Ma the exhumation rates of rocks within the Gaoligong shear zone are anomalously high compared with those outside of. The rapid cooling during 18–11 Ma appears to be restricted to the shear zone, likely due to localized thermal effects of shearing and exhumation. After 11 Ma, both the areas within and outside of the shear zones experienced a similar two-stage exhumation history: slower cooling until the early Pliocene, and then a rapid increase in cooling rate since the early Pliocene. Our results indicate a synchronized exhumation but with spatially varied exhumation rates. Our study also highlights the important role of large-scale shear zones in exposing rocks, and thus the importance of the structural context when interpreting thermochronological data in the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. | Yukui GE Jing LIU-ZENG Jinyu ZHANG Wei WANG Yuntao TIAN Matthew FOX Lingsen ZENG Xiaoming SHEN Heng WANG Ze SU Kejia XIE | 2020 | Science China Earth Sciences2020,63,4: | 5
Metamorphic solid salt (KCl-NaCl) in quartzo-feldspathic polyphase inclusions in the Sulu ultrahigh-pressure eclogite显示文摘Unusual polyphase inclusions of K-feldspar+quartz+titanite+solid salt and K-feldspar+albite+quartz+epidote with textures similar to the other K-feldspar+quartz inclusions were found in omphacite grains from the Sulu ultrahigh pressure (UHP) eclogites. One of these inclusions contain square to round solid salt inclusions of KCl-NaCl composition. Such a mineral assemblage within K-feldspar-bearing inclusions hosted by UHP metamorphic phases suggests that (1) potassium granitic melts enriched in Cl components were presented during UHP metamorphism or at the early stage of rapid exhumation of deeply subducted continental slab; (2) they were resulted from reactions between the incoming granitic melts and quartz (or coesite); and (3) solid salt inclusions of NaCl-KCl were derived from dehydration and desiccation of Cl-bearing melts. Our new observations further demonstrate that during the tectonic evolution of UHP rocks, fertile components within deeply subducted continental materials could undergo partial melting, leading to the formation of Cl-bearing potassium granitic melts and substantial migration of fluid-conservative elements (e.g. Ti, Hf) within the UHP slab. | ZENG LingSen CHEN ZhenYu CHEN Jing | 2013 | Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,8: | 5
Mantle Source Components and Magmatic Evolution for the Comei Large Igneous Province:Evidence from the Early Cretaceous Niangzhong Mafic Magmatism in Tethyan Himalaya显示文摘The Niangzhong diabase dikes, dated at 138.1±0.4 Ma,are located within the outcrop area of the Comei large igneous province(LIP).These diabase samples can be divided into two groups:samples in Group 1 show varying MgO(1.50 wt.%-10.25 wt.%)and TiO_(2)(0.85 wt.%-4.63 wt.%)contents, and enriched initial isotope compositions(^(87)Sr/^(86)Sr(t)=0.7056-0.7112,ε_(Nd)(t)=-0.3-+3.8),with OIB-like REEs and trace elements patterns, resulting from low degree melting of garnet-bearing lherzolite mantle sources;in contrast, samples in Group 2 show limited MgO(4.14 wt.%-7.75 wt.%)and TiO_(2)(0.98 wt.%-1.69 wt.%)contents, and depleted initial isotope compositions(^(87)Sr/^(86)Sr(t)=0.7075-0.7112,ε_(Nd)(t)=+5.5-+6.2),with N-MORB-like REEs and trace elements patterns, resulting from relatively high degree melting of spinel-bearing lherzolite mantle source.Combined with the published representative data about Comei LIP,we summarize that the source components for Comei LIP products include OIB end-member,enriched OIB end-member,and N-MORB end-member,respectively.Melts modeling suggests that magmas in the Comei LIP evolve in a relatively high oxygen fugacity condition, which influenced their fractionation sequences and led to systematic changes of TiO_(2)contents,Ti/Y and Ti/Ti*ratios.From the spatial and temporal distribution of above three end-member samples, deep process of Kerguelen plume during the Comei LIP formation can be interpreted as the interaction among the Kerguelen plume, the overlying lithospheric mantle, and the upwelling asthenosphere. The magmatism of Comei LIP began at~140 Ma and then lasted and peaked at~132 Ma with the progressively lithospheric thinning of eastern Gondwana upon the impact of Kerguelen plume. | Yaying Wang Lingsen Zeng Kejun Hou Li'e Gao Qian Wang Linghao Zhao Jiahao Gao Guangxu Li | 2022 | Journal of Earth Science2022,33,1: | 3
Phylogenetic position of sponges in early metazoan evolution and bionic applications of siliceous sponge spicules显示文摘Sponges are the oldest and the simplest but not primitive multicellular animals. They represent the earliest evolutionary metazoan phylum still extant. It was a long and painful scientific process to posi-tion the most enigmatic and mysterious metazoan, the Porifera, into their correct phylogenetic place among the eukaryotes in general and multicellular animals in particular. As living fossils, sponges provide the best evidence for the early evolution of Metazoa. More recently, interest has been focused on the bionic applications of sponges' siliceous spicules, after the discovery of their unique structure and high fiber performance. In this review, the emergence of sponges, evolutionary novelties found in sponges, and the phylogenetic position of sponges in early metazoan evolution are highlighted. In ad-dition,the present state of knowledge on silicatein-mediated 'biosilica' formation in marine sponges, including the involvement of other molecules in silica metabolism and their potential application in nanobiotechnology and medicine,is given. | Werner E G MULLER WANG XiaoHong ZENG LingSen Heinz C SCHRODER | 2007 | Chinese Science Bulletin2007,52,22: | 3
Rutile to Titanite Transformation in Eclogites and its Geochemical Consequences:An Example from the Sumdo Eclogite,Tibet显示文摘The formation of titanite coronae after rutile is common in retrograde high-to ultrahigh-pressure meta-mafic rocks, which provides a good opportunity to address the geochemical behavior of HFSE in crustal environments. In the Sumdo eclogite, titanite occurs either as a corona around rutile grains or as semi-continuous veins cross-cutting the major foliation, whereas rutile grains occur either as inclusions in garnet or omphacite or as a relict core surrounded by titanite.Textural relationships and trace elements characteristics of rutile and titanite with different occurrences indicate that both minerals preferentially incorporate Nb and Hf over Ta and Zr in aqueous fluid. Moreover, the breakdown of omphacite and epidote could release substantial amounts of aqueous fluids enriched in Ca,Si,Fe and REE,which would react with rutile to form titanite coronae and veins.During this process,water-insoluble elements, like HFSE and HREE,behave like mobile elements, but they do not migrate substantially out of the system, instead, tending to react in situ. This suggests that the aqueous fluids released during the retrograde metamorphic reactions in mafic rocks could not substantially transfer fluidimmobile elements into the overlying mantle wedge in subduction environments. | ZHAO Linghao ZENG Lingsen GAO Li’e HU Mingyue SUN Dongyang ZHANG Lifei | 2023 | Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2023,97,1: | 2

Miocene Crustal Anatexis of Paleozoic Orthogneiss in the Zhada Area,Western Himalaya显示文摘Granitic gneiss(orthogneiss)and Himalayan leucogranite are widely distributed in the Himalayan orogen, but whether or not the granitic gneiss made a contribution to the Himalayan leucogranite remains unclear. In this study,we present the petrological, geochronological and geochemical results for orthogneisses and leucogranites from the Zhada area,Western Himalayas.Zhada orthogneiss is composed mainly of quartz,plagioclase,K-feldspar,biotite and muscovite, with accessory zircon and apatite.Orthogneiss zircon cathodoluminescence(CL)images show that most grains contain a core with oscillatory zoning, which indicates an igneous origin.Sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe(SHRIMP)U-Pb dating of the zircon cores in the orthogneiss shows a weighted ^(206)Pb/^(238)U age of 515±4 Ma(early Paleozoic),with sponge-like zircon rims of 17.9±0.5 Ma(Miocene).Zhada leucogranite shows^(206)Pb/^(238)U ages ranging from 19.0±0.4 Ma to 12.4±0.2 Ma,the weighted average age being 16.2±0.4 Ma.The leucogranites have a low Ca content(<1 wt%),FeOt content(<1 wt%),Rb content(67.0-402 ppm),Sr content(<56.6 ppm),Ba content(3.35-238 ppm)and Rb/Sr ratio(0.5-14.7),which are similar to the geochemical characteristics of the Himalayan leucogranite derived from muscovite dehydration partial melting of metasediments and representative of most Himalayan leucogranites. The highly variable Na_(2)O+K_(2)O(4.33 wt%-9.13 wt%),Al_(2)O_(3)(8.44 wt%-13.51 wt%),ΣREE(40.2-191.0 ppm),Rb(67.0-402 ppm)and Nb(8.23-26.4 ppm)contents,^(87)Sr/^(86)Sr(t)ratios(0.7445-0.8605)andεNd(t)values(−3.6 to−8.2)indicate that the leucogranite is derived from a heterogenetic source. The nonradiogenic Nd isotope values of the studied Zhada leucogranite and orthogneiss range from−8.2 to−3.6 and from−8.7 to−4.1,respectively.Therefore,the general mixing equation was used to perform the Sr and Nd isotope mixing calculations. The results indicate that the heterogenetic source was the Tethyan Himalayan Sequence(THS)/Higher Himalayan Crystalline(HHC)metasediments and Zhada orthogneiss. The Zhada area experienced crustal anatexis during the Miocene and the heterogenetic source of the orthogneiss and metasediment may have experienced crustal anatexis controlled by muscovite dehydration. The Zhada leucogranite inherited not only the geochemical characteristics of the Himalayan metasediment(muscovite dehydration melting),but also the trace elements and Sr-Nd isotopic characteristics of the Zhada orthogneiss. These results indicate that the Paleozoic Zhada orthogneiss was involved in crustal anatexis at 17.9±0.5 Ma(Miocene)and that the muscovite dehydration of the metasediments in the heterogenetic source produced fluid, which may have caused the orthogneiss solidus lines to decline, triggering a partial melting of the Zhada orthogneiss. It is therefore proposed that Himalayan leucogranite is a crust-derived granite rather than a S-type granite,as previously hypothesized. | CHEN Han HU Guyue ZENG Lingsen YU Xuhui LI Yike | 2022 | Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2022,96,3: | 1

Late Cambrian to Early Silurian Granitic Rocks of the Gemuri Area, Central Qiangtang, North Tibet: New Constraints on the Tectonic Evolution of the Northern Margin of Gondwana显示文摘The Paleozoic tectonic framework and paleo–plate configuration of the northern margin of Gondwana remain controversial. The South Qiangtang terrane is located along the northern margin of Gondwana and records key processes in the formation and evolution of this supercontinent. Here, we present new field, petrological, zircon U-Pb geochronological, and Lu-Hf isotopic data for granitic rocks of the Gemuri pluton, all of which provide new insights into the evolution of the northern margin of Gondwana. Zircon U-Pb dating of the Gemuri pluton yielded three concordant ages of 488.5 ± 2.1, 479.9 ± 8.9, and 438.5 ± 3.5 Ma. Combining these ages with the results of previous research indicates that the South Qiangtang terrane records two magmatic episodes at 502–471 and 453–439 Ma. These two episodes are associated with enriched zircon Hf isotopic compositions(εHf(t) =-10.1 to-3.9 and-16.6 to-6.5, respectively), suggesting the granites were formed by the partial melting of Paleoproterozoic–Mesoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks(Two–stage Hf model ages(TCDM) = 2094–1704 and 2466–1827 Ma, respectively). Combining these data with the presence of linearly distributed, contemporaneous Paleozoic igneous rocks along the northern margin of Gondwana, we suggest that all of these rocks were formed in an active continental margin setting. This manifests that the two magmatic episodes within the Gemuri area were associated with southward subduction in the Proto-(Paleo-) Tethys Ocean. | WANG Haitao ZHAI Qingguo HU Peiyuan ZENG Lingsen TANG Yue ZHU Zhicai | 2020 | Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2020,94,4: | 1
