| 1 | Hybrid constructed wetlands for highly polluted river water treatment and comparison of surface-and subsurface-flow cells显示文摘A series of large pilot constructed wetland(CW) systems were constructed near the confluence of an urban stream to a larger river in Xi'an, a northwestern megacity in China, for treating polluted stream water before it entered the receiving water body. Each CW system is a combination of surfaceand subsurface-flow cells with local gravel, sand or slag as substrates and Phragmites australis and Typha orientalis as plants. During a one-year operation with an average surface loading of 0.053 m3/(m2·day), the overall COD, BOD, NH3-N, total nitrogen(TN) and total phosphorus(TP) removals were 72.7% ± 4.5%, 93.4% ± 2.1%, 54.0% ± 6.3%, 53.9% ± 6.0% and 69.4% ± 4.6%, respectively, which brought about an effective improvement of the river water quality. Surface-flow cells showed better NH3-N removal than their TN removal while subsurface-flow cells showed better TN removal than their NH3-N removal. Using local slag as the substrate, the organic and phosphorus removal could be much improved. | 2 | Investigation of benzylisoquinoline alkaloid biosynthetic pathway and its transcriptional regulation in lotus显示文摘Lotus predominantly accumulates benzylisoquinoline alkaloids(BIAs),but their biosynthesis and regulation remain unclear.Here,we investigated structural and regulatory genes involved in BIA accumulation in lotus.Two clustered CYP80 genes were identified to be responsible for the biosynthesis of bis-BIAs and aporphine-type BIAs,respectively,and their tissue-specific expression causes divergence in alkaloid component between leaf and embryo.In contrast with the common(S)-reticuline precursor for most BIAs,aporphine alkaloids in lotus leaf may result from the(S)-N-methylcoclaurine precursor.Structural diversity of BIA alkaloids in the leaf is attributed to enzymatic modifications,including intramolecular C–C phenol coupling on ring A and methylation and demethylation at certain positions.Additionally,most BIA biosynthetic pathway genes show higher levels of expression in the leaf of high-BIA cultivar compared with low-BIA cultivar,suggesting transcriptional regulation of BIA accumulation in lotus.Five transcription factors,including three MYBs,one ethylene-responsive factor,and one basic helix–loop–helix(bHLH),were identified to be candidate regulators of BIA biosynthesis in lotus.Our study reveals a BIA biosynthetic pathway and its transcriptional regulation in lotus,which will enable a deeper understanding of BIA biosynthesis in plants. | Xianbao Deng Li Zhao Ting Fang Yaqian Xiong Collins Ogutu Dong Yang Sornkanok Vimolmangkang Yanling Liu Yuepeng Han | 2018 | Horticulture Research2018,5,1: | 8 |

| 4 | Long-term case study of a Wuzhishan miniature pig with diabetes显示文摘Background:Miniature pigs are attractive animal models for exploring diabetes because they are similar to humans in terms of physiological structure and metabolism.However,little is known about the complications of diabetes in pigs.Methods:In this study,a 28-month observation of a Wuzhishan miniature pig with streptozotocin(STZ)-induced(120 mg/kg)diabetes was conducted,to investigate diabetes-related complications and the possibility of self-recovery in miniature pigs.Blood glucose,serum and urinary biochemistry was measured,and histopathologic examinations of eyes,kidney and pancreas were made.Results:During the observation,diabetic complications of eyes and kidney were observed.The eye complications included bilateral cataracts in the 15th month and degeneration of inner retina and microaneurysm in the 28th month.Kidney complications included glomerular mesangial expansion,focal segmental glomerular sclerosis,and renal tubular epithelial degeneration,but no proteinuria was observed.By 28 months after the application of STZ,with no treatment given,blood glucose had recovered and the number of pancreatic islet beta-cells had increased significantly.Conclusions:We showed that the STZ-induced diabetes model in miniature pigs could accurately mimic the pathological changes of human diabetes,and that pancreatic islet beta-cell regeneration did occur in an adult miniature pig,providing a new means for exploring diabetic complications and pancreatic islet beta-cell regeneration. | Miaomiao Niu Yaqian Liu Lei Xiang Yuqiong Zhao Jifang Yuan Yunxiao Jia Xin Dai Hua Chen | 2020 | Animal Models and Experimental Medicine2020,3,1: | 2 |

| 16 | Unsupervised Video Object Segmentation via Weak User Interaction and Temporal Modulation显示文摘In unsupervised video object segmentation(UVOS),the whole video might segment the wrong target due to the lack of initial prior information.Also,in semi-supervised video object segmentation(SVOS),the initial video frame with a fine-grained pixel-level mask is essential to good segmentation accuracy.It is expensive and laborious to provide the accurate pixel-level masks for each training sequence.To address this issue,We present a weak user interactive UVOS approach guided by a simple human-made rectangle annotation in the initial frame.We first interactively draw the region of interest by a rectangle,and then we leverage the mask RCNN(region-based convolutional neural networks)method to generate a set of coarse reference labels for subsequent mask propagations.To establish the temporal correspondence between the coherent frames,we further design two novel temporal modulation modules to enhance the target representations.We compute the earth mover’s distance(EMD)-based similarity between coherent frames to mine the co-occurrent objects in the two images,which is used to modulate the target representation to highlight the foreground target.We design a cross-squeeze temporal modulation module to emphasize the co-occurrent features across frames,which further helps to enhance the foreground target representation.We augment the temporally modulated representations with the original representation and obtain the compositive spatio-temporal information,producing a more accurate video object segmentation(VOS)model.The experimental results on both UVOS and SVOS datasets including Davis2016,FBMS,Youtube-VOS,and Davis2017,show that our method yields favorable accuracy and complexity.The related code is available. | FAN Jiaqing ZHANG Kaihua ZHAO Yaqian LIU Qingshan | 2023 | Chinese Journal of Electronics2023,32,3: | 1 |
