Numerical study on ULF waves in a dipole field excited by sudden impulse显示文摘A three-dimensional numerical model is employed to investigate ULF waves ex-cited by the sudden impulse (SI) of the solar wind dynamic pressure interacting with a dipole magnetosphere. We focus on the solar wind-magnetosphere energy coupling through ULF waves, and the influences of the SI spectrum on the cavity mode structure and the energy deposition due to field line resonances (FLRs) in the magnetosphere. The numerical results show that for a given SI lasting for 1 min with amplitude of 50 mV/m impinging on the subsolar magnetopause, the total ULF energy transported from the solar wind to the magnetosphere is about the magni-tude of 1014 J. The efficiency of the solar wind energy input is around 1%, which depends little on the location of the magnetopause in the model. It is also found that the energy of the cavity mode is confined in the region near the magnetopause, whereas, the energy of the toroidal mode may be distributed among a few specific L-shells. With a given size of the model magnetosphere and plasma density distri-bution, it is shown that the fundamental eigenfrequency of the cavity mode and the central locations of the FLRs do not vary noticeably with the power spectrum of the SI. It is worth noting that the spectrum of the SI affects the excitation of higher harmonics of the global cavity mode. The broader the bandwidth of the SI is, the higher harmonics of cavity mode could be excited. Meanwhile, the corresponding FLRs regions are broadened at the same time, which implies that the global cavity modes and toroidal modes can resonate on more magnetic L-shells when more harmonics of the global cavity modes appear.YANG Biao FU SuiYan ZONG QiuGang WANG YongFu ZHOU XuZhi PU ZuYin XIE Lun 2008Science China(Technological Sciences)2008,51,10:12
Multi-spacecraft observations of ULF waves during the recovery phase of magnetic storm on October 30, 2003显示文摘Based on observations obtained by Cluster C1, GOES 10, 12, and Polar, the global ULF wave properties are studied during the recovery phase of a very intense magnetic storm-Halloween storm (October 31, 2003, 21:00-23:00 UT). The results indicate that the ULF waves’ properties observed by different satellites, such as amplitude, period, etc. show large variations. This can be interpreted as that Field Line Resonance (FLR) might take place in the region where Cluster C1 passed. The compressional wave of the cavity mode coupled with FLR’s shear Alfven wave and fed energy to the latter, forming a large-amplitude toroidal mode. From the point of period, Cluster C1 observed the shortest period, GOES 10, 12 observed the middle, while Polar observed the longest. The wave period of toroidal mode observed by Cluster C1 kept almost unchanging when Cluster C1 passed L range from 11.7 to 5.3. Using the Squared Wavelet Coherence analysis method, we estimated that the FLR region in the dayside magnetosphere could expand to at least 4 local time widths. The toroidal mode observed by Polar was a standing wave, while the pol-oidal mode was a propagating wave, the observation results could be well ex-plained by the waveguide mode theory. Since the solarwind speed Vx was -800 km/s and the dynamic pressure varied little, we speculated that the source of the ULF wave was the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability at the magnetopause triggered by high speed solarwind.YongFu Wang SuiYan Fu QiuGang Zong Biao Yang ZuYin Pu Lun Xie XuZhi Zhou 2008Science China(Technological Sciences)2008,51,10:11
Enhanced anti-sunward flow near local noon during a period of horizontal IMF and high solar wind velocity V_Y显示文摘It is believed that a southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is mainly responsible for the energy input from solar wind into the magnetosphere. This paper presents an unusual case of strong anti-sunward plasma flow (up to 2 km/s) in the polar cap ionosphere and large cross-polar cap potential (CPCP) during a period of horizontal IMF (|BZ| < 2 nT) observed by both ACE (at the L1 point) and Geotail (on the dusk flank of the magnetosheath). The CPCP is even higher than that under preceding BZ ≈-23 nT.Furthermore,GOES8 observed that the magnetosheath field turns northward as the anti-sunward plasma flow and CPCP start to increase, which implies that the magnetosheath field interacting with the Earth's magnetopause has significantly rotated and differs from the IMF observed by ACE and Geotail. In accordance with previous theoretical work,we suggest that the magnetic field line draping produces a southward magnetosheath field and enhances anti-sunward plasma flow and the CPCP.WEI Yong ZONG QiuGang PU ZuYin WAN WeiXing LIU JianJun FU SuiYan SHI QuanQi 2011Chinese Science Bulletin2011,56,11:7
Ultra low frequency waves observed by Double Star TC-1 in the plasmasphere boundary layer显示文摘The characteristic and properties of ULF waves in the plasmasphere boundary layer during two very quiet periods are present. The ULF waves were detected by Double Star TC-1 when the spacecraft passed through the plasmasphere in an outbound and inbound trajectories, respectively. A clear association between the ULF waves and periodic variations of energetic ions fluxes was observed. The ob-servations showed that the wave frequency was higher inside the plasmasphere than outside. The mechanism generating these ULF waves and possible diagnos-ing of the 'classical plasmapause' location with the ULF wave were discussed.XIE Lun ZHANG XiaoJia PU ZuYin WANG YongFu FU SuiYan ZONG QiuGang 2008Science China(Technological Sciences)2008,51,10:7
Roles of initial current carrier in the distribution of field-aligned current in 3-D Hall MHD simulations显示文摘A three-dimensional (3-D) Hall MHD simulation is carried out to study the roles of initial current carrier in the topology of magnetic field, the generation and distribu- tion of field aligned currents (FACs), and the appearance of Alfvén waves. Consid- ering the contribution of ions to the initial current, the topology of the obtained magnetic field turns to be more complex. In some cases, it is found that not only the traditional By quadrupole structure but also a reversal By quadrupole structure appears in the simulation box. This can explain the observational features near the diffusion region, which are inconsistent with the Hall MHD theory with the total ini- tial current carried by electrons. Several other interesting features are also emerged. First, motions of electrons and ions are decoupled from each other in the small plasma region (Hall effect region) with a scale less than or comparable with the ion inertial length or ion skin depth di=c/ωp. In the non-Hall effect region, the global magnetic structure is shifted in +y direction under the influence of ions with initial y directional motion. However, in the Hall effect region, magnetic field lines are bent in ?y direction, mainly controlled by the motion of electrons, then By is generated. Second, FACs emerge as a result of the appearance of By. Compared with the prior Hall MHD simulation results, the generated FACs shift in +y direction, and hence the dawn-dusk symmetry is broken. Third, the Walén relation in our simulations is consistent with the Walén relation in Hall plasma, thus the presence of Alfvén wave is confirmed.ZHANG XianGuo PU ZuYin MA ZhiWei ZHOU XuZhi 2008Science China(Technological Sciences)2008,51,3:4
New progress of Double Star-Cluster joint exploration and study显示文摘The magnetic reconnection of magnetosphere and the magnetospheric space storms (including magnetospheric substorm, magnetic storm, magnetospheric particle storm) has long been one of the most challenging subjects in the so-lar-terrestrial physics. The reconnection mechanism and global triggering process of the magnetospheric space storms are still unclear up to now. Based on the Double Star Program (DSP) and Cluster joint measurements, we have observed the solar wind density hole, the component magnetic field reconnection in the magnetopause, the structures of magnetic storm ring current, global and multi-scale driven and triggering processes of magnetospheric substorm. In this paper we will briefly introduce these results.LIU ZhenXing PU ZuYin CAO JinBin SHEN Chao LU Li ZHANG LingQian 2008Science China(Technological Sciences)2008,51,10:4
Recent studies in satellite observations of three-dimensional magnetic reconnection显示文摘Magnetic reconnection is a main process converting the magnetic energy into thermal and kinetic energy in plasmas. It is one of the fundamental problems of crucial importance not only to space plasmas physics and space weather studies, such as the solar flare, coronal mass ejections and magnetospheric substorms, but also to the stability analysis in magnetically confined fusion. In general, except for cases with periodical boundary conditions,three-dimensional(3D) magnetic re-connection occurs on magnetic separatrices generated by magnetic nulls. Here we briefly introduce/review the theories and some recent satellite observations of 3D magnetic reconnection. Topics to be further studied are also discussed.XIAO ChiJie WANG XiaoGang PU ZuYin MA ZhiWei ZHAO Hui ZHOU GuiPing WANG JingXiu LIU ZhenXing 2007Science China(Technological Sciences)2007,50,3:4
A preliminary exploration of the mechanism for the occurrence of two types of various magnetic structures in the magnetotail显示文摘As well known, the magnetic cross-tail component By in the magnetotail is in direct proportion to the in-terplanetary magnetic field (IMF) By component. And the polarity of IMF and plasmoid / flux rope By components do indeed agree. This results indicate that the IMF By penetrates plasmoids and the magnetic structures must therefore be three-dimensional. In this note, the dynamical processes of magnetotail in the course of a substorm are studied using a MHD code with two-dimensions and three components on the basis of two types of initial equilibrium solutions of the quiet magnetotail. The numerical results of two cases illustrate various features of time evolution of By component that correspond to two kinds of plasmoid-like structures: one is associated with a flux rope core and the other resembles a 'closed loop' plamoid. Therefore, the occurrence of various magnetic structures in the magnetotail might be related to nonsteady driven reconnection with different distributions of the By component.JIN Shuping HU Xianpeng GUI Hailong LIU Zhenxing PU Zuyin B.Wilken 2001Chinese Science Bulletin2001,46,12:4
Braking of high-speed flows in the magnetotail:THEMIS joint observations显示文摘The motion and deceleration processes of plasma sheet high-speed flows have great significance to magnetospheric particle acceleration, magnetic field perturbation, magnetic flux transport, triggering of substorm, and the current system formation in the magnetotail. From February to April 2009,two satellites of the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms mission,THA and THE,were often separated largely in Z direction, but had small X and Y separations.Such special configuration allows simultaneous observations of highspeed flows at the center and boundary of the plasma sheet.Based on selected case study and statistical analysis,it is found that for about 89%of the events we selected, the probe further away from the neutral sheet observed the high-speed flow earlier than the one close to the center, and the flow is mainly field aligned. And for about 95%events the probe further away from the neutral sheet observed higher X component of the plasma flow. With the hypothesis that parallel flow keeps the same speed during its earthward propagation while central plasma sheet stream uniformly or suddenly brakes on its way to the earth,we deduced the position where the deceleration begins to be between 13 Re and 17 Re downtail, where thenear-earth reconnection is supposed to occur. In addition, our statistical results show that dipolarization fronts observed in the central plasma sheet are more prominent than those observed in the plasma sheet boundary layer ahead of the high-speed flow.Wensai Shang Zhonghua Yao Quanqi Shi Weijie Sun Suiyan Fu Jiang Liu Anmin Tian Qiugang Zong Zuyin Pu Ting Xiao Vassilis Angelopoulos 2014Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,3:3
Shape and position of Earth's bow shock near-lunar orbit based on ARTEMIS data显示文摘Earth's bow shock is the result of interaction between the supersonic solar wind and Earth's magnetopause. However, data limitations mean the model of the shape and position of the bow shock are based largely on near-Earth satellite data. The model of the bow shock in the distant magnetotail and other factors that affect the bow shock, such as the interplanetary magnetic field(IMF) B_y, remain unclear. Here, based on the bow shock crossings of ARTEMIS from January 2011 to January 2015, new coefficients of the tail-flaring angle a of the Chao model(one of the most accurate models currently available) were obtained by fitting data from the middle-distance magnetotail(near-lunar orbit, geocentric distance -20R_E>X>-50R_E). In addition, the effects of the IMF B_y on the flaring angle a were analyzed. Our results showed that:(1) the new fitting coefficients of the Chao model in the middle-distance magnetotail are more consistent with the observed results;(2) the tail-flaring angle a of the bow shock increases as the absolute value of the IMF B_y increases. Moreover, positive IMF B_y has a greater effect than negative IMF B_y on flaring angle. These results provide a reference for bow shock modeling that includes the IMF B_y.LIU Ji SHI QuanQi TIAN AnMin Lü JianYong WU Hao WANG Ming FU SuiYan YANG YuChen ZONG QiuGang ZHANG Jiang FENG YongYong PU ZuYin 2016Science China Earth Sciences2016,59,8:3

THEMIS observations of two substorms on February 26,2008显示文摘Two substorms occurred at ~04:05 and ~04:55 UT on February 26,2008 are studied with the in-situ observations of THEMIS satellites and ground-based aurora and magnetic field measurements.Angelopoulos et al.have made a comprehensive study of the 04:55 UT event. We showed detailed features of the two substorms with much attention to the first event and to the rela-tionship between mid-tail magnetic reconnection(MR) and substorm activities. It was found that in the earlier stage of each substorm,a first auroral intensification occurred 2-3 min soon after the start of mid-tail MR,followed by a slow and very lim-ited expansion. The auroral arcs were weak,short-lived,and localized, characterizing all features of a pseudobreakup. We re-garded the first auroral brightening as the initial onset of the substorms.A few minutes later,a second stronger auroral intensification appeared, followed by quick and extensive expansions. It was interesting to note that the second brightening and related poleward expansion happened almost simultaneously(within a couple of minutes) with the onset of earthward flow and dipolarization in the near-Earth tail and other phenomenon of the substorm expansion phase. We thus regarded the second auroral brightening as the major onset of the substorms.Furthermore,it was seen that during the growth phase of the two substorms, the polar cap open flux Ψ kept increasing, while it quickly reduced during the substorm expansion and recovery phase. These variations of Ψ implied that the evolution of the two substorm expansion phases were closely related to MR of tail lobe open field lines.Analysis of substorm activities revealed that the two events studied were small substorms;while estimate of MR rate indicated that the MR processes in the two substorms were weak. The aforementioned observations suggested that mid-tail MR initiated the pseudobreakup first;the earthward flow generated by MR transported magnetic flux and energy to the near-Earth tail to cause the formation of SCW and CD,which induced near-Earth dipolarization and major auroral brightening, and eventually led to the onset of the substorm expansion phase. These results were clearly consistent with the picture of NENL and RCS models and supported the two step initiation scenario of substorms.CHU XiangNing PU ZuYin CAO Xin WANG Jue V.MISHIN V.ANGELOPOULOS LIU Jiang WEI Yong K.H.GLASSMEIER J.MCFADDEN D.LARSON S.MENDE H.FREY C.T.RUSSELL I.MANN D.SIBECK ZONG QiuGang FU SuiYan XIE Lun T.I.SAIFUDINOVA M.V.TOLOCHKO L.A.SAPRONOVA H.REME E.LUCEK 2010Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,5:3
Continuous tailward flow in the near-Earth magnetotail observed by TC-1 satellite显示文摘On July 11, 2004, a substorm process in the period of continuous tailward flow was observed by the joint exploration of the TC-1, IMAGE and ACE satellites. The substorm observed by the TC-1 in the near-Earth has three stages: the growth phase (from 11:43 to 12:19), the pre-expansion process (from 12:19 to 12:28) and the dipolarization process. The auroral brightening was at 12:26 recorded by the FUV instrument on IMAGE, and the dipolarization occurred two minutes later. During the 45 min period of the tailward flow, the magnetotail experienced the growth phase and the pre-expansion process. When the dipolarization process began, the TC-1 entered the plasma sheet and observed a high speed earthward flow. The field-aligned tailward flow is characterized by the low temperature and high density, which is consistent with the properties of the flow from the ionosphere detected in the near-Earth magnetotail by other satellites. The tailward flow is closely related with the southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), and may have an important effect on the substorm.HANG LingQian LIU ZhenXing MA ZhiWei PU ZuYin WANG JiYe SHEN Chao 2007Chinese Science Bulletin2007,52,14:3
Recent progresses in theoretical studies and satellite observations for collisionless magnetic reconnection显示文摘As an essential mechanism in large scale fast magnetic energy releases and field reconfigurations processes in space, astrophysical, and laboratory plasmas, magnetic reconnection, particularly collisionless magnetic reconnection, has been studied for more than 65 years. Many progresses have been achieved in recent years and basic features of the process have been well understood, largely due to more and more satellite observation data available in the last decade. However,a few outstanding issues are still remained unresolved. We in the paper review the development of collisionless magnetic reconnection studies and major achievements in recent years, and also briefly discuss the open questions remained to be answered in studies of collisionless magnetic reconnection.WANG XiaoGang XIAO ChiJie PU ZuYin WANG JiaQi 2012Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,12:2
Continuous lobe reconnectionin the mid-tail and its relationship to substorms:Cluster observations of continuous lobe reconnection in the mid-magneto tail显示文摘When the IMF turns southward, a great amount of magnetic energy is stored in the magnetotail, and the electric field across the magnetotail substantially en-hances. As long as magnetic reconnection (MR) in the mag-netotail initiates and continues, the magnetic field and plasma in the central plasma sheet are carried away to the near-Earth and down to the tail, the magnetic field and plasma in the lobe region enter the CPS and are involved in MR. We call this process “Continuous Lobe Reconnection (CLR)”. In this paper a detailed analysis of Cluster observa-tion of MR through 2001―2003 is made. Plenty of CLR events are found that led to considerable changes of tail con-figuration, appearance of BBF, as well as large-scale bubbles in which both plasma temperature and number density sub-stantially decrease. It is shown that in general CLR events last for dozens of minutes and have good correspondence to substorm initiation under the condition of continuous southward IMF.CAO Xin PU Zuyin ZHANG Hui FU Suiyan XIAO Chijie LIU Zhenxing J. 16Non-storm erosion of MeV electron outer radiation belt down to L^(*)<4.0 associated with successive enhancements of solar wind density显示文摘We report an unusual non-storm erosion event of outer zone MeV electron distribution during three successive solar wind number density enhancements(SWDEs)on November 27-30,2015.Loss of MeV electrons and energy-dependent narrowing of electron pitch angle distributions(PAD)first developed at L^(*)=5.5 and then moved down to L^(*)<4.According to the evolution of the electron phase space density(PSD)profile, losses of electrons with small pitch angles at L^(*)>4 during SWDE1 are mainly due to outward radial diffusion. However during SWDE2&3,scattering loss due to EMIC waves is dominant at 4Ying Xiong Lun Xie SuiYan Fu BinBin Ni ZuYin Pu 2021Earth and Planetary Physics2021,5,6:2
Propagation properties of foreshock cavitons: Cluster observations显示文摘Foreshock cavitons are transient phenomena observed in the terrestrial foreshock region. They are characterized by a simultaneous depression of magnetic field magnitude and plasma density, which are bounded with enhancements of these two parameters and surrounded by ultralow frequency(ULF)waves.Previous studies focused on the interplanetary magnetic field(IMF)conditions, solar wind(SW)conditions, and the growth of the foreshock waves related to the generation of foreshock cavitons.Previously,a multipoint spacecraft analysis method using Cluster data was applied to analyze only two foreshock cavitons, and this method did not consider uncertainties. In this study, multipoint spacecraft analysis methods, including the timing method, the minimum directional derivative(MDD)method, and the spatiotemporal difference(STD)method are applied to determine the velocity in both spacecraft and solar wind frames. The propagation properties show good agreement with previous results from simulations and observations that most cavitons move sunward in the solar wind frame, with the velocities larger than the Alfvén speed. The propagation properties of foreshock cavitons support the formation mechanism of cavitons in previous simulations, which suggested that cavitons are formed due to the nonlinear evolution of compressive ULF waves. We find that there is clear decreasing trend between the size of cavitons and their velocity in the solar wind frame. In addition, the timing method considering errors has been applied to study the evolution properties by comparing the velocities with errors of the leading and trailing edges, and we identify three stable cavitons and one contracting caviton, which has not been studied before. Most cavitons should remain stable when they travel toward the Earth’s bow shock. The relationship between the size of foreshock cavitons and their distance from the bow shock is also discussed.WANG MengMeng YAO ShuTao SHI QuanQi ZHANG Hui TIAN AnMin DEGELING Alexander William ZHANG Shuai GUO RuiLong SUN WeiJie LIU Ji BAI ShiChen SHEN XiaoChen ZHU XiaoQiong FU SuiYan PU ZuYin 2020Science China(Technological Sciences)2020,63,1:1
Pressure gradient evolution in the near-Earth magnetotail at the arrival of BBFs显示文摘Using in situ observations from THEMIS A, D and E during the 2008–2011 tail season, we present a statistical study of the evolution of pressure gradients in the near-Earth tail during bursty bulk flow(BBF) convection. We identified 138 substorm BBFs and 2,197 non-substorm BBFs for this study. We found that both the pressure and the BZcomponent of the magnetic field were enhanced at the arrival of BBFs at the spacecraft locations. We suggest that the increase of BZduring non-substorm BBFs is associated with flux pile-up. However, the much stronger enhancement of BZduring substorm BBFs implies the occurrence of magnetic field dipolarization which is caused by both the flux pile-up process and near-Earth current disruption. Furthermore, a bow-wave-like high pressure appears to be formed at the arrival of substorm BBFs,which is responsible for the formation of region-1-sense FACs. The azimuthal pressure gradient associated with the arrival of substorm BBFs lasts for about 5 min. The enhanced pressure gradient associated with the bow waveis caused by the braking and diversion of the Earthward flow in the inner plasma sheet. The results from this statistical study suggest that the braking and azimuthal diversion of BBFs may commonly create azimuthal pressure gradients, which are related to the formation of the FAC of the substorm current wedge.Zhonghua Yao Zuyin Pu Aimin Du Vassilis Angelopoulos Christopher J.Owen Jiang Liu Xiangning Chu Xin Cao Suiyan Fu Qiugang Zong Yuan Wang 2014Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,34:1
The secular variation of inner zone high energy proton environment in the SAA显示文摘A long-term variation of the inner zone high-energy proton environment at low orbits was investigated by DSTM using the adiabatic approximation of charge particle motion with NASA standard radiation models as reference states. The DST results show that over the past three decades the fluxes of high-energy protons at ~1000 km in the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) noticeably increased, the center region of proton SAA apparently moved westward and expanded. Calculations of the L-shell averaged lifetime of high-energy protons indicate that the DST pro-vides a reasonable means for estimation of the secular variation of inner zone proton environ-ment.XIE Lun PU Zuyin JIAO Weixin FU suiyan 2005Science China Earth Sciences2005,48,12:1
Downward current electron beams observed at the dipolarization front显示文摘The strong field-aligned pitch angle distribution of electrons is observed right at the dipolarization front (DF) before the arriving of a high speed flow when the four Cluster satellites are traveling in the magnetotail around 15 R E on July 22, 2001. The increased electron fluxes only last for a short time period at the DF, corresponding to just a few bouncing periods for 1 keV electrons. The field-aligned current contributed by these electrons agrees well with that calculated by the magnetic field observations by four satellites at the front. These electron streams are found in the energy range of 0.2-2 keV, peak around 1 keV. It is suggested that these downward current electrons may be originated near the aurora region by some kinds of potential structure. The occurrence of these electrons implies that the formation of the dipolarization front and the associated field-aligned current play an important role in the magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling.ZHENG Hao FU SuiYan ZONG QuiGang PU ZuYin 2013Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,8:1
