| 1 | Sex-specific effects of Eugenia punicifolia extract on gastric ulcer healing in rats显示文摘AIM To evaluate the sex-specific effects of a hydroalcoholic extract from Eugenia punicifolia(HEEP) leaves on gastric ulcer healing.METHODS In this rat study involving males, intact(cycling) females, and ovariectomized females, gastric ulcers were induced using acetic acid. A vehicle, lansoprazole, or HEEP was administered for 14 d after ulcer induction. Body weight was monitored throughout the treatment period. At the end of treatment, the rats were euthanized and the following in vivo and in vitro investigations were performed: macroscopic examination of the lesion area and organ weights, biochemical analysis, zymography, and evaluation of protein expression levels. Additionally, the concentration-dependent effect of HEEP was evaluated in terms of subacute toxicity and cytotoxicity.RESULTS Compared to the vehicle, HEEP demonstrated a great healing capacity by substantially reducing the ulcerative lesion area in males(52.44%), intact females(85.22%), and ovariectomized females(65.47%), confirming that HEEP accelerates the healing of acetic acidinduced gastric lesions and suggesting that this effect is modulated by female sex hormones. The antiulcer effect of HEEP was mediated by prostaglandin E2 only in male rats. Overall, the beneficial effect of HEEP was the highest in intact females. Notably, HEEP promoted the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor(intact vs ovariectomized females) and decreased the expression of Caspase-8 and Bcl-2(intact female vs male or ovariectomized female). Additionally, HEEP enhanced fibroblast proliferation and migration into a wounded area in vitro, confirming its healing effect. | 2 | Proton nuclear magnetic resonance-based metabonomic models for non-invasive diagnosis of liver fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C:Optimizing the classification of intermediate fibrosis显示文摘AIM To develop metabonomic models(MMs), using 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) spectra of serum, to predict significant liver fibrosis(SF: Metavir ≥ F2), advanced liver fibrosis(AF: METAVIR ≥ F3) and cirrhosis(C: METAVIR = F4 or clinical cirrhosis) in chronic hepatitis C(CHC) patients. Additionally, to compare the accuracy of the MMs with the aspartate aminotransferase to platelet ratio index(APRI) and fibrosis index based on four factors(FIB-4). METHODS Sixty-nine patients who had undergone biopsy in the previous 12 mo or had clinical cirrhosis were included. The presence of any other liver disease was a criterion for exclusion. The MMs, constructed using partial least squares discriminant analysis and linear discriminant analysis formalisms, were tested by cross-validation, considering SF, AF and C. RESULTS Results showed that forty-two patients(61%) presented SF, 28(40%) AF and 18(26%) C. The MMs showed sensitivity and specificity of 97.6% and 92.6% to predict SF; 96.4% and 95.1% to predict AF; and 100% and 98.0% to predict C. Besides that, the MMs correctly classified all 27(39.7%) and 25(38.8%) patients with intermediate values of APRI and FIB-4, respectively. | 14 | Photogrammetry as a tool for the postural evaluation of the spine:A systematic review显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the use of photogrammetry and identify the mathematical procedures applied when evaluating spinal posture.METHODS:A systematic search using keywords was conducted in the Pub Med,EMBASE,Scopus,Science and Medicine®databases.The following inclusion criteria adopted were:(1)the use of photogrammetry as a method to evaluate spinal posture;(2)evaluations of spinal curvature in the sagittal and/or frontal plane;(3)studies published within the last three decades;and(4)written entirely in English.The exclusion criteria were:(1)studies which objective involved the verification of some aspect of validation of instruments;(2)studies published as abstracts and those published in scientific events;and(3)studies using evaluation of the anteriorization of the head to determine the angular positioning of the cervical spine.The articles in this review were included and evaluated for their methodological quality,based on the Downs and Black scale,by two independent reviewers.RESULTS:Initially,1758 articles were found,76 of which were included upon reading the full texts and 29 were included in accordance with the predetermined criteria.In addition,after analyzing the references in those articles,a further six articles were selected,so that 35 articles were included in this review.This systematic review revealed that the photogrammetry has been using in observational studies.Furthermore,it was also found that,although the data collection methodologies are similar across the studies,in relation to aspects of data analysis,the methodologies are very different,especially regarding the mathematical routines employed to support different postural evaluation software.CONCLUSION:With photogrammetry,the aim of the assessment,whether it is for clinical,research or collective health purposes,must be considered when choosing which protocol to use to evaluate spinal posture. | Tássia Silveira Furlanetto Juliana Adami Sedrez Cláudia Tarrag?
