340-Year(1978–2017) human settlement changes in China reflected by impervious surfaces from satellite remote sensing显示文摘Impervious surfaces are the most significant feature of human settlements. Timely, accurate, and frequent information on impervious surfaces is critical in both social-economic and natural environment applications. Over the past 40 years, impervious surface areas in China have grown rapidly. However,annual maps of impervious areas in China with high spatial details do not exist during this period. In this paper, we made use of reliable impervious surface mapping algorithms that we published before and the Google Earth Engine(GEE) platform to address this data gap. With available data in GEE, we were able to map impervious surfaces over the entire country circa 1978, and during 1985–2017 at an annual frequency. The 1978 data were at 60-m resolution, while the 1985–2017 data were in 30-m resolution.For the 30-m resolution data, we evaluated the accuracies for 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and2015. Overall accuracies reached more than 90%. Our results indicate that the growth of impervious surface in China was not only fast but also considerably exceeding the per capita impervious surface area in developed countries like Japan. The 40-year continuous and consistent impervious surface distribution data in China would generate widespread interests in the research and policy-making community. 6Challenges in Research and Development of Traditional Chinese Medicines显示文摘This review is briefly to recall the history of research and development (R&D) of Chinese materia medica (CMM) and to discuss the challenges of Chinese traditional and herbal medicines (CTHM) facing the modern science and technology. The R&D of CTHM is thought to be an important pathway for new drug discovery. Since1949, about 140 approved new drugs have been developed, among which about 80 originated directly or indirectly from medicinal plants. CTHM has gained interest from the international medical, biomedical, and pharmaceutical institutions as a valuable source of potential medicines. 7Rural vitalization in China:A perspective of land consolidation显示文摘The core objective of rural vitalization is to systemically establish a coupling pattern of various rural development elements including population,land and industry.As one of the prerequisites,land resources is required to be optimally allocated via land consolidation.Con seque ntly,la nd con solidati on con tributes greatly to population agglomeration,industrial developme nt and resources support under the con text of combati ng rural decline.Based on the key eleme nts affecting rural development,this paper elaborates the con no tation of rural vitalization and land consolidation in the new era as well as their relationships.Furthermore,the paper analyzes the alternative paths for achieving rural vitalization via land consolidation,and discusses the future directions of land consolidation and rural vitalization.The conclusions are drawn as follows:(1)To cope with the loss and decline of the intrinsic elements in rural areas,rural vitalization is a development strategy aimed at realizing economic,political,cultural and ecological rejuvenation in rural area by reshaping socio?economic morphology and spatial pattern in rural territory.(2)From the perspective of rural vitalization,land consolidation is endowed with new connotation,which should not only target at activating the key elements of rural development,but also place emphasis on coordimating material space and spirit core as well as integrating the restructuring of the physical space and the rural gov?ernance system.(3)Land consolidation should be compatible with regional natural conditions and the current stage of socio-economic development.According to the principle of regional planning and classification strategy,the appropriate models and paths should be adopted to promote the benign interactions of population,land and industry based on engineering techniques and ecological means.(4)Under the background of national strategy of rural vitaliza?tion,it is n ecessary to reshape the value orientati on of la nd con solidation based on a scie tific understanding of urban-rural relations and rural territorial functions,coordinate land consolidation planning and rural vitalization planning under the unified spatial planning system,and explore the new model combining land consolidation and multifunctional agriculture.LONG Hualou ZHANG Yingnan TU Shuangshuang 2019Journal of Geographical Sciences2019,29,4:33

11Development of and Perspective on High-Performance Nanostructured Bainitic Bearing Steel显示文摘Bearings are the most important component of nearly all mechanical equipment, as they guarantee the steady running of the equipment, which is especially important for high-end equipment such as highspeed trains and shield tunneling machines. Requirements regarding the quality of bearings are increasing with the rapid development in technology. A country’s bearings manufacturing level directly reflects the level of that country’s steel metallurgy and machinery manufacturing. The performance of the bearing steel is the critical factor that determines the quality of a bearing. The development of new bearing steel with higher performance is the ambition of material researchers and the expectation of the manufacturing industry. Many famous bearing manufacturing enterprises are competing to develop the new generation of bearing steel. Nanostructured bainitic bearing steel (NBBS), which is a newly developed bearing steel, not only possesses high strength and toughness, but also exhibits excellent wear resistance and rolling contact fatigue (RCF) resistance. In recent years, relevant achievements in NBBS in China have led to significant progress in this field. NBBS was first used in China to manufacture large bearings for wind turbines and heavy-duty bearings, with excellent performance. As a result, NBBS and its corresponding heat-treatment process have been included in the national and industry standards for the first time. The bearing industry considers the exploitation of NBBS to be epoch-making, and has termed this kind of bearing as the second generation of bainitic bearing. In this paper, the development of NBBS is reviewed in detail, including its advantages and disadvantages. 12Policy Analysis and Development Evaluation of Digital Trade:An International Comparison显示文摘As an extension of traditional trade,digital trade is a new type of trade in the era of the digital economy.In this paper,we first analyze the digital trade-related strategies of eight leading economies through word clouds and dissect China s digital trade-related policies using the word frequency method by sorting through the digital trade-related policy documents of 26 economies and Chinese provinces.We then evaluate the status quo of digital trade development in 111 countries and Chinese provinces by building a digital trade index system to determine the development environment and market potential.The results show that all countries attach great importance to digital technology,data and government guidance in the development of digital trade.The results also reveal that'development,''service'and'construction'are the three most frequently used words in various Chinese documents.The overall level of China s digital trade is at the global vanguard,but is characterized by uneven regional development.In the era of digital trade,traditional international trade theory is also in urgent need of breakthroughs and innovation.Shuzhong Ma Jiwen Guo Hongsheng Zhang 2019China & World Economy2019,27,3:29

16RNA-directed DNA methylation and demethylation in plants显示文摘RNA-directed DNA methylation (RdDM) is a nuclear process in which small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) direct the cytosine methylation of DNA sequences that are complementary to the siRNAs. In plants, double stranded-RNAs (dsRNAs) generated by RNA-dependent RNA polymerase 2 (RDR2) serve as precursors for Dicer-like 3 dependent biogenesis of 24-nt siRNAs. Plant specific RNA polymerase IV (Pol IV) is presumed to generate the initial RNA transcripts that are substrates for RDR2. siRNAs are loaded onto an argonaute4-containing RISC (RNA-induced silencing complex) that targets the de novo DNA methyltransferase DRM2 to RdDM target loci. Nascent RNA transcripts from the target loci are generated by another plant-specific RNA polymerase, Pol V, and these transcripts help recruit com- plementary siRNAs and the associated RdDM effector complex to the target loci in a transcrip- tion-coupled DNA methylation process. Small RNA binding proteins such as ROS3 may direct tar- get-specific DNA demethylation by the ROS1 family of DNA demethylases. Chromatin remodeling en- zymes and histone modifying enzymes also participate in DNA methylation and possibly demethylation. One of the well studied functions of RdDM is transposon silencing and genome stability. In addition, RdDM is important for paramutation, imprinting, gene regulation, and plant development. Lo- cus-specific DNA methylation and demethylation, and transposon activation under abiotic stresses suggest that RdDM is also important in stress responses of plants. 19Climate change, water resources and sustainable development in the arid and semi-arid lands of Central Asia in the past 30 years显示文摘The countries of Central Asia are collectively known as the five '-stans': Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan. In recent times, the Central Asian region has been affected by the shrinkage of the Aral Sea, widespread desertification, soil salinization, biodiversity loss, frequent sand storms, and many other ecological disasters. This paper is a review article based upon the collection, identification and collation of previous studies of environmental changes and regional developments in Central Asia in the past 30 years. Most recent studies have reached a consensus that the temperature rise in Central Asia is occurring faster than the global average. This warming trend will not only result in a higher evaporation in the basin oases, but also to a significant retreat of glaciers in the mountainous areas. Water is the key to sustainable development in the arid and semi-arid regions in Central Asia. The uneven distribution, over consumption, and pollution of water resources in Central Asia have caused severe water supply problems, which have been affecting regional harmony and development for the past 30 years. The widespread and significant land use changes in the 1990 s could be used to improve our understanding of natural variability and human interaction in the region. There has been a positive trend of trans-border cooperation among the Central Asian countries in recent years. International attention has grown and research projects have been initiated to provide water and ecosystem protection in Central Asia. However, the agreements that have been reached might not be able to deliver practical action in time to prevent severe ecological disasters. Water management should be based on hydrographic borders and ministries should be able to make timely decisions without political intervention. Fully integrated management of water resources, land use and industrial development is essential in Central Asia.
