A Survey on Terahertz Communications显示文摘With the exponential growth of the data traffic in wireless communication systems, terahertz(THz) frequency band is envisioned as a promising candidate to support ultra-broadband for future beyond fifth generation(5G), bridging the gap between millimeter wave(mmWave) and optical frequency ranges. The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive literature review on the development towards THz communications and presents some key technologies faced in THz wireless communication systems. Firstly, despite the substantial hardware problems that have to be developed in terms of the THz solid state superheterodyne receiver, high speed THz modulators and THz antennas, the practical THz channel model and the efficient THz beamforming are also described to compensate for the severe path attenuation. Moreover, two different kinds of lab-level THz communication systems are introduced minutely, named a solid state THz communication system and a spatial direct modulation THz communication system, respectively. The solid state THz system converts intermediate frequency(IF) modulated signal to THz frequency while the direct modulation THz system allows the high power THz sources to input for approving the relatively long distance communications. Finally, we discuss several potential application scenarios as well as some vital technical challenges that will be encountered in the future THz communications. | Zhi Chen Xinying Ma Bo Zhang Yaxin Zhang Zhongqian Niu Ningyuan Kuang Wenjie Chen Lingxiang Li Shaoqian Li | 2019 | China Communications2019,16,2: | 43
Ge-on-Si modulators operating at mid-infrared wavelengths up to 8 μm显示文摘We report mid-infrared Ge-on-Si waveguide-based PIN diode modulators operating at wavelengths of 3.8 and8 μm. Fabricated 1-mm-long electro-absorption devices exhibit a modulation depth of >35 dB with a 7 V forward bias at 3.8 μm, and a similar 1-mm-long Mach–Zehnder modulator has a Vπ· L of 0.47 V · cm. Driven by a 2.5 Vpp RF signal, 60 MHz on-off keying modulation was demonstrated. Electro-absorption modulation at 8 μm was demonstrated preliminarily, with the device performance limited by large contact separation and high contact resistance. | TIANTIAN LI MILOS NEDELJKOVIC NANNICHA HATTASAN WEI CAO ZHIBO QU CALLUM GLITTLEJOHNS JORDI SOLER PENADES LORENZO MASTRONARDI VINITA MITTAL DANIEL BENEDIKOVIC DAVID JTHOMSON FREDERIC YGARDES HEQUAN WU ZHIPING ZHOU GORAN ZMASHANOVICH | 2019 | Photonics Research2019,7,8: | 5
Bias-drift-free Mach–Zehnder modulators based on a heterogeneous silicon and lithium niobate platform显示文摘Optical modulators have been and will continue to be essential devices for energy-and cost-efficient optical communication networks.Heterogeneous silicon and lithium niobate modulators have demonstrated promising performances of low optical loss, low drive voltage, and large modulation bandwidth. However,DC bias drift is a major drawback of optical modulators using lithium niobate as the active electro-optic material. Here,we demonstrate high-speed and bias-drift-free Mach–Zehnder modulators based on the heterogeneous silicon and lithium niobate platform. The devices combine stable thermo-optic DC biases in silicon and ultra-fast electro-optic modulation in lithium niobate, and exhibit a low insertion loss of 1.8 d B,a low half-wave voltage of 3 V,an electro-optic modulation bandwidth of at least 70 GHz,and modulation data rates up to 128 Gb/s. | SHIHAO SUN MINGBO HE MENGYUE XU SHENGQIAN GAO ZIYAN CHEN XIAN ZHANG ZILIANG RUAN XIONG WU LIDAN ZHOU LIN LIU CHAO LU CHANGJIAN GUO LIU LIU SIYUAN YU XINLUN CAI | 2020 | Photonics Research2020,8,12: | 5
Modulators of alternative splicing as novel therapeutics in cancer显示文摘Alternative splicing(AS), the process of removing introns from pre-m RNA and re-arrangement of exons to give several types of mature transcripts, has been described more than 40 years ago. However, until recently, it has not been clear how extensive it is. Genome-wide studies have now conclusively shown that more than 90% of genes are alternatively spliced in humans. This makes AS one of the main drivers of proteomic diversity and, consequently, determinant of cellular function repertoire. Unsurprisingly, given its extent, numerous splice isoforms have been described to be associated with several dise-ases including cancer. Many of them have antagonistic functions, e.g., pro- and anti-angiogenic or pro- and anti-apoptotic. Additionally several splice factors have been recently described to have oncogene or tumour suppressors activities, like SF3B1 which is frequently mutated in myelodysplastic syndromes. Beside the implications for cancer pathogenesis, de-regulated AS is recognized as one of the novel areas of cell biology where therapeutic manipulations may be designed. This editorial discusses the possibilities of manipulation of AS for therapeutic benefit in cancer. Approaches involving the use of oligonucleotides as well as small molecule splicing modulators are presented as well as thoughts on how specificity might be accomplished in splicing therapeutics. | Sebastian Oltean | 2015 | World Journal of Clinical Oncology2015,6,5: | 2
An ultra-sensitive and easy-to-use assay for sensing human UGT1A1 activities in biological systems显示文摘The human UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A1(UGT1A1),one of the most essential conjugative enzymes,is responsible for the metabolism and detoxification of bilirubin and other endogenous substances,as well as many different xenobiotic compounds.Deciphering UGT1A1 relevance to human diseases and characterizing the effects of small molecules on the activities of UGT1A1 requires reliable tools for probing the function of this key enzyme in complex biological matrices.Herein,an easy-to-use assay for highly-selective and sensitive monitoring of UGT1A1 activities in various biological matrices, using liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection(LC-FD),has been developed and validated. The newly developed LC-FD based assay has been confirmed in terms of sensitivity, specificity, precision, quantitative linear range and stability. One of its main advantages is lowering the limits of detection and quantification by about 100-fold in comparison to the previous assay that used the same probe substrate, enabling reliable quantification of lower amounts of active enzyme than any other method. The precision test demonstrated that both intra-and inter-day variations for this assay were less than 5.5%.Furthermore,the newly developed assay has also been successfully used to screen and characterize the regulatory effects of small molecules on the expression level of UGT1A1 in living cells.Ove rall,an easy-to-use LC-FD based assay has been developed for ultra-sensitive UGT1A1 activities measurements in various biological systems, providing an inexpensive and practical approach for exploring the role of UGT1A1 in human diseases, interactions with xenobiotics, and characterization modulatory effects of small molecules on this conjugative enzyme. | Ya-Di Zhu Hui-Lin Pang Qi-Hang Zhou Zi-Fei Qin Qiang Jin Moshe Finel Yi-Nan Wang Wei-Wei Qin Yin Lu Dan-Dan Wang Guang-Bo Ge | 2020 | Journal of Pharmaceutical Analysis2020,10,3: | 2
Structure and microwave properties analysis of substrate removed GaAs/AIGaAs electro-optic modulator structure by finite element method显示文摘In this paper, structure and microwave properties of a substrate removed GaAs/A1GaAs traveling wave electro-optic modulator structure were analyzed and simulated by using the finite element numerical technique for lower loss, simultaneous matching of optical and microwave velocities and impedance matching with 50 Ω. The effects of core layer thickness, claddings thicknesses, and width of the modulator on the microwave effective index nm were investigated, the characteristic impedance Zc, the microwave losses a, and the half-wave voltage- length product VmL were calculated. The results of the simulation suggest that the electrical bandwidth of 22 GHz and the optical bandwidth of 48 GHz can be obtained for fully matched, lower loss structure, which correspond to a 13 V. cm drive voltage. | Kambiz ABEDI Habib VAHIDI | 2013 | Frontiers of Optoelectronics2013,6,1: | 1
Polarization-modified Fano line shape spectrum with a single whispering gallery mode显示文摘Using the HE11Xand HE11Ymodes in a tapered fiber(TF)and the whispering gallery mode(WGM)in a microsphere resonator,Fano line-shape spectra were theoretically described and experimentally observed in this study. The line shapes of the spectra can be tuned to form a Lorentz notch, various Fano line shapes, and the Lorentz peak by controlling the polarizations at the input and output ports of the TF.The relative position or the size of the waveguide and WGM resonator do not need to be accurately controlled to produce these effects. The proposed configuration is suitable for mass production and will improve the performance of the devices in which it is applied. | PengFa Chang BoTao Cao LiGang Huang JiWei Li Yue Hu Feng Gao WenDing Zhang Fang Bo XuanYi Yu GuoQuan Zhang JingJun Xu | 2020 | Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2020,63,1: | 1
Stimulated Brillouin scattering induced all-optical modulation in graphene microfiber显示文摘Graphene microfibers are burgeoning modulators with great potential in all-optical communication. One of the critical issues that remains to be understood is the dynamic mechanism of light–graphene interaction. Here, we propose a power dependent modulation by using 980 nm pump light and 1064 nm signal light via graphene microfiber, and the results show a strong transmission reduction and frequency blue shift with the increase of pump power. The experimental observation is attributed to a stimulated Brillouin scattering process induced by the pump light. Power and frequency variations are a result of energy transition of the scattered phonon in the fiber. This work reveals the nonlinear effect process in the light–graphene interaction and provides a new method for power and frequency control with graphene all-optical modulation. | JIWEN ZHU XUEMEI CHENG YALI LIU RUIDUO WANG MAN JIANG DIAO LI BAOLE LU ZHAOYU REN | 2019 | Photonics Research2019,7,1: | 1
Unveiling the biological role of sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor modulators in inflammatory bowel diseases显示文摘Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)is chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract that has a high epidemiological prevalence worldwide. The increasing disease burden worldwide, lack of response to current biologic therapeutics, and treatment-related immunogenicity have led to major concerns regarding the clinical management of IBD patients and treatment efficacy.Understanding disease pathogenesis and disease-related molecular mechanisms is the most important goal in developing new and effective therapeutics.Sphingosine-1-phosphate(S1P)receptor(S1PR)modulators form a class of oral small molecule drugs currently in clinical development for IBD have shown promising effects on disease improvement.S1P is a sphingosine-derived phospholipid that acts by binding to its receptor S1PR and is involved in the regulation of several biological processes including cell survival, differentiation, migration, proliferation, immune response, and lymphocyte trafficking.T lymphocytes play an important role in regulating inflammatory responses. In inflamed IBD tissue,an imbalance between T helper(Th)and regulatory T lymphocytes and Th cytokine levels was found. The S1P/S1PR signaling axis and metabolism have been linked to inflammatory responses in IBD.S1P modulators targeting S1PRs and S1P metabolism have been developed and shown to regulate inflammatory responses by affecting lymphocyte trafficking, lymphocyte number, lymphocyte activity, cytokine production, and contributing to gut barrier function. | Evanthia Tourkochristou Athanasia Mouzaki Christos Triantos | 2023 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2023,29,1: | 1
Large-signal SPICE model for depletion-type silicon ring modulators显示文摘We present an accurate, easy-to-use large-signal SPICE circuit model for depletion-type silicon ring modulators(Si RMs). Our model includes both the electrical and optical characteristics of the Si RM and consists of circuit elements whose values change depending on modulation voltages. The accuracy of our model is confirmed by comparing the SPICE simulation results of 25 Gb/s non-return-to-zero(NRZ) modulation with the measurement. The model is used for performance optimization of monolithically integrated Si photonic NRZ and pulse-amplitudemodulation 4 transmitters in the standard SPICE circuit design environment. | MINKYU KIM MYUNGJIN SHIN MIN-HYEONG KIM BYUNG-MIN YU YOUNGHYUN KIM YOOJIN BAN STEFAN LISCHKE CHRISTIAN MAI LARS ZIMMERMANN WOO-YOUNG CHOI | 2019 | Photonics Research2019,7,9: | 0
High-frequency characterization of high-speed modulators and photodetectors in a link with low-speed photonic sampling显示文摘We propose a low-speed photonic sampling for independent high-frequency characterization of a Mach–Zehnder modulator(MZM)and a photodetector(PD)in an optical link.A low-speed mode-locked laser diode(MLLD)provides an ultrawideband optical stimulus with scalable frequency range, working as the photonic sampling source of the link. The uneven spectrum lines of the MLLD are firstly characterized with symmetric modulation within the interesting frequency range. Then, the electro-optic modulated signals are down-converted to the first Nyquist frequency range, yielding the self-referenced extraction of modulation depth and half-wave voltage of the MZM without correcting the responsivity fluctuation of the PD in the link. Finally, the frequency responsivity of the PD is self-referenced measured under null modulation of the MZM.As frequency responses of the MZM and the PD can be independently obtained, our method allows self-referenced high-frequency measurement for a high-speed optical link.In the proof-of-concept experiment,a 96.9 MS/s MLLD is used for measuring a MZM and a PD within the frequency range up to 50 GHz.The consistency between our method and the conventional method verifies that the ultra-wideband and self-referenced high-frequency characterization of high-speed MZMs and PDs. | Mengke Wang Shangjian Zhang Zhao Liu Xuyan Zhang Yutong He Yangxue Ma Yali Zhang Zhiyao Zhang Yong Liu | 2021 | Journal of Semiconductors2021,42,4: | 0
