Exploration breakthrough and its significance of Gulong lacustrine shale oil in the Songliao Basin,Northeastern China显示文摘Lacustrine shale oil resources are abundant in many petroliferous basins in China. The shale oil formations are characterized by low API gravity, high viscosity, poor mobility, high clay content, low brittleness and etc.Exploration of lacustrine shale oil started relatively late in China, but its progress is very rapid and breakthroughs have been made successively. In this short communication,we introduced the most significant shale oil discovery which is made recently in the Qingshankou Formation of the Gulong sag in the Songliao Basin.Key exploratory wells including Guye 1H(GY1H),Yingye 1H(YY1H)and Guye 2HC(GY2HC)tested stable and high oil flow in shale reservoirs, revealing the relatively stable and high oil production capacity of shale in the Gulong sag of Daqing Oilfield. It marks a leap of petroleum theoretical recognition from lacustrine shale generating oil to producing oil and from the theory of traditional oil migration and accumulation to the theory of indigenous oil accumulation in organic-rich shale.Although lacustrine shale oil exploration and development still faces many challenges in China, its prospect is quite promising. | Zhijun Jin Xinping Liang Zhenrui Bai | 2022 | Energy Geoscience2022,3,2: | 3
Deformation patterns and hydrocarbon potential related to intracratonic strike-slip fault systems in the east of Central Uplift Belt in the Tarim Basin显示文摘Strike-slip faults, proven to be closely linked to hydrocarbon migration and accumulation, are wide-spread in the Tarim Basin Craton.Deformation patterns in the eastern part of the Central Uplift Belt of the Tarim Basin are analyzed in detail to understand the deformation model and genetic mechanism of strike-slip faults, how their patterns impact reservoir formation and influence oil and gas potential.Regional tectonic events are taken into consideration to identify the primary factors that controlled the development of strike-slip faults in the region. The Tazhong Uplift in the eastern part of Central Uplift Belt is believed to be a complex anticlinal uplift formed by compression-and-torsion acting on the Cambrian-Middle Ordovician platform during the middle-late Caledonian period.Multi-stage development of this north-trending fault-fold belt and the NE-trending strike-slip faults make it structurally complex. The NE-trending Paleozoic strike-slip faults were formed jointly by the differential thrusting of the Tazhong Uplift along Fault No.Ⅰand the NE-trending shear sliding of the basal fault blocks during the middle-late Caledonian-early Hercynian.Based on the distribution of effective source rocks, the tectonic setting during the period critical to hydrocarbon accumulation, and the distribution of conductive faults, the northern slope of the Tazhong Upliftd-especially its west-central part where the NE-trending faults are developed is not only located close to the northern hydrocarbon source rock area but also possesses conditions suitable for the development of carbonate reservoirs. In addition, the NE-trending faults provide passage for initial development of the reservoir and the subsequent migration of oil and gas from the Aman area to the uplifted zone, making the Tazhong Uplift an extremely favorable area for oil and gas accumulation with substantial potential for exploration. | Fei Ning Jinbiao Yun Zhongpei Zhang Peng Li | 2022 | Energy Geoscience2022,3,1: | 2
Fracture identification and evaluation using conventional logs in tight sandstones:A case study in the Ordos Basin,China显示文摘Fractures are of great significance to tight oil and gas development.Fracture identification using conventional well logs is a feasible way to locate the underground fractures in tight sandstones. However, there are three problems affecting its interpretation accuracy and practical application, namely weak well log responses of fractures,a lack of specific logs for fracture prediction, and relative change omission in log responses. To overcome these problems and improve fracture identification accuracy,a fracture indicating parameter(FIP)method composed of a comprehensive index method(CIM)and a comprehensive fractal method(CFM)is introduced. The CIM tries to handle the first problem by amplifying log responses of fractures. The CFM addresses the third one using fractal dimensions. The flexible weight parameters corresponding to logs in the CIM and CFM make the interpretation possible for wells lacking specific logs. The reconstructed logs in the CIM and CFM try to solve the second problem. It is noted that the FIP method can calculate the probability of fracture development at a certain depth, but cannot show the fracture development degree of a new well compared with other wells. In this study,a formation fracture intensity(FFI)method is also introduced to further evaluate fracture development combined with production data.To test the validity of the FIP and FFI methods, fracture identification experiments are implemented in a tight reservoir in the Ordos Basin. The results are consistent with the data of rock core observation and production, indicating the proposed methods are effective for fracture identification and evaluation. | Shaoqun Dong Lianbo Zeng Wenya Lyu Dongling Xia Guoping Liu Yue Wu Xiangyi Du | 2020 | Energy Geoscience2020,1,3: | 2
Diagenesis and its controls on reservoir quality of the Tambar oil field, Norwegian North Sea显示文摘A study of the diagenetic evolution of the Late Jurassic sandstones of the shallow marine facies in the Tambar oil field,Norwegian North Sea was carried out to understand its controls on reservoir quality.Core samples and a set of wireline logs obtained from three wells were used to carry out petrographic studies including light optics and scanning electron microscopy, well log analysis, fluid inclusions,X-ray diffraction(XRD)for whole rock samples, clay mineral extracts and stable isotopes. The Tambar reservoir sandstones range mainly from siltstone to fine-grained sandstones, exclusively arkoses cemented mainly by microcrystalline quartz, euhedral quartz overgrowth, dolomite cement, illite and chlorite.Early diagenetic/eodigenetic minerals include pyrite, calcite, and microcrystalline quartz and late diagenetic/mesodiagenetic minerals include quartz overgrowth, dolomite, illite and chlorite. The d18O values of dolomite cement in the Tambar sandstone reservoir range from11.77‰to3.57‰PDB,while the d13C values of the dolomite cement are from5.07‰to1.12‰PDB.Homogenization temperature for fluid inclusions trapped in authigenic quartz fall between 130℃ and 169℃.The reservoir quality is controlled mainly by early formed grain-coating microcrystalline quartz that precipitated from the dissolution of sponge spicules which significantly inhibits quartz overgrowth precipitation.Oil emplacement do not show significant control on reservoir quality because considerable quartz cementation has taken place before the onset of major oil charge.Only the coarse-grained sands show a correlation between quartz cement volume and water saturation. However, the interpreted temperature for dolomite cementation is significantly higher for water leg-suggested effect of oil emplacement on the late dolomite.Under-standing these controls on the reservoir quality will enhance the exploration strategy for the Tambar oil field. | Mohammed Bukar Richard H.Worden Shettima Bukar Philip Shell | 2021 | Energy Geoscience2021,2,1: | 1
Structural characteristics and deep-water hydrocarbon accumulation model of the Scotian Basin, Eastern Canada显示文摘Commercial hydrocarbon reservoirs have been discovered in shallow-water areas of the Scotian Basin, Eastern Canada. However, knowledge about the structure and hydrocarbon accumulation characteristics of the basin is still insufficient, which constrains the oil and gas exploration in deep-water areas. Based on comprehensive data of magnetic anomalies, seismic survey, and drilling, this study determines the structure characteristics of the Scotian Basin and its hydrocarbon accumulation conditions in deep waters and evaluates the deep-water hydrocarbon exploration potential. The transform faults and basement structures in the northern basin control the sedimentary framework showing thick strata in east and thin strata in west of the basin. The bowl-shaped depression formed by thermal subsidence during the transitional phase and the confined environment (micro basins) caused by salt tectonics provide favorable conditions for the development of source rocks during the depression stage (also referred to as the depression period sequence) of the basin. The progradation of large shelf-margin deltas during the drift phase and steep continental slope provide favorable conditions for the deposition of slope-floor fans on continental margins of the basin. Moreover, the source-reservoir assemblage comprising the source rocks within the depression stage and the turbidite sandstones on the continental margin in the deep waters may form large deep-water turbidite sandstone reservoirs. This study will provide a valuable reference for the deep-water hydrocarbon exploration in the Scotian Basin. | Gaokui Wu Fanjun Kong Naxin Tian Tianbi Ma Chongzhi Tao | 2023 | Energy Geoscience2023,4,3: | 1
Geology and geomechanics of hydraulic fracturing in the Marcellus shale gas play and their potential applications to the Fuling shale gas development显示文摘Geological characteristics, geomechanical behavior and hydraulic fracture propagation mechanism in the Marcellus shale gas play are analyzed and compared with China’s Fuling shale play.Successful experiences in hydraulic fracturing and shale gas development in the Marcellus shale gas play are summarized, which might be applicable in other shale plays. The main factors contributing to the successful development of the Marcellus shale gas play include adoption of advanced drilling and completion technologies, increases of hydraulic fracturing stages, proppant concentration and fluid injection volume. The geological and geomechanical mechanisms related to those technologies are analyzed, particularly the in-situ stress impacts on hydraulic fracturing. The minimum horizontal stress controls where the fractures are initiated, and the maximum horizontal stress dominates the direction of the hydraulic fracture propagation.Hydraulic fracturing performed in the shale reservoir normally has no stress barriers in most cases because the shale has a high minimum horizontal stress, inducing hydraulic fractures propagating beyond the reservoir zone, resulting in inefficient stimulation. This is a common problem in shale plays, and its mechanism is studied in the paper. It is also found that the on-azimuth well has a higher productivity than the off-azimuth well, because shear fractures are created in the off-azimuth well, causing main fractures to kink and increasing fracture tortuosity and friction. The Fuling shale gas play has a markedly higher minimum horizontal stress and much smaller horizontal stress difference. The high minimum horizontal stress causes a much higher formation breakdown pressure;therefore, hydraulic fracturing in the Fuling shale gas play needs a higher treatment pressure, which implies higher difficulty in fracture propagation. The small difference in the two horizontal stresses in the Fuling shale gas play generates shorter and more complex hydraulic fractures, because hydraulic fractures in this case are prone to curve to preexisting fractures. To overcome these difficulties,we recommend reducing well spacing and increasing proppant concentration to increase gas productivity for the Fuling shale gas development. | Herong Zheng Jincai Zhang Yuanchang Qi | 2020 | Energy Geoscience2020,1,1: | 1
Tight sandstone reservoir sensitivity and damage mechanism analysis: A case study from Ordos Basin, China and implications for reservoir damage prevention显示文摘Analysis of reservoir sensitivity to velocity, water, salt, acid, alkali and stress is critical for reservoir protection. To study the tight sandstone reservoir sensitivity at different formation depths(effective stress)and formation water conditions(pH,salinity, and fluid velocity),a series of dynamic core flow tests under different pH,salinity, acid, and effective stress conditions were performed on samples from tight sandstone reservoirs of the Upper Triassic Yanchang 8(T_(3)y^(8))Member and conventional reservoirs of the Middle-Lower Jurassic Yan'an 9(J_(1-2)y^(9))Member in the Ordos Basin. The results indicate that, compared with the conventional reservoirs, the tight sandstone reservoirs are more sensitive to velocity and stress, less sensitive to water, alkali and salinity, and respond better to acid fracturing. In addition, the critical conditions(salinity, velocity,pH,and stress)for pumping drilling, completion, and fracturing fluids into tight sandstone reservoirs were investigated.A combination of scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive spectrometry(SEM-EDS),cathodoluminescence(CL),casting thin section(CTS)and nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)images,high-pressure mercury injection capillary pressure(MICP)measurements as well as X-ray fluorescence spectral(XRF)analyses were employed to analyze the damage mechanisms of the conventional reservoirs(J_(1-2)y^(9))and tight sandstone reservoirs(T_(3)y^(8))caused by fluid invasion. The results suggest that reservoir sensitivity is primarily conditioned by the composition of detrital components and interstitial fillings, petrophysical properties,pore-throat structure, and diagenetic facies. All these factors control the sensitivity types and extent of the reser-voirs.Our results indicate that the poorer the reservoir physical properties, the stronger the reservoir heterogeneity and sensitivity, implying that tight sandstone reservoirs are more susceptible to changes in fluids than conventional reservoirs. This study offers insights into the reservoir damage types and helps to improve the design and implementation of protection measures for tight sandstone reservoir exploration. | Zhongquan Liu Bingbing Shi Tianchen Ge Fenggui Sui Yue Wang Pengfei Zhang Xiangchun Chang Ye Liu Yongrui Wang Zhaoyang Wang | 2022 | Energy Geoscience2022,3,4: | 1
Restoration of the pre-Jurassic paleogeomorphology and its control on hydrocarbon distribution in western Ordos Basin显示文摘In recent years, the discovery of the Jurassic oil reservoirs in the Western Thrust Belt of the Ordos Basin reveals that the Jurassic formation in this area has huge oil and gas potential. The pre-Jurassic paleo-geomorphology plays a vital role in the formation of the Jurassic oil reservoirs. In this paper, the impression method is applied to restore the pre-Jurassic paleogeomorphology of the Hongde area in the western Ordos Basin, using a large number of drilling, logging, well testing and the latest 3D seismic data. The pre-Jurassic paleogeomorphological units in the study area can be categorized into five groups, including ancient channel valley, ancient terrace, slope, interchannel mound, and low residual mound facies. The oil reservoirs are mainly distributed in highland areas such as slope belts and low residual mounds, the main areas where hydrocarbons accumulate. In addition, the branch ditches in the study area are developed to the southeast and merged into the Ganshan ancient channel. The sandstone in the confluence area of the branch gully is well sorted and connected under frequent scouring by the river. The sand bodies of good connectivity therefore form a drainage system for long-term hydrocarbon migration. The formation of the Jurassic reservoirs in the study area is mainly affected by sedimentary facies, deposition location, and hydrocarbon migration pathway(or fault)of pre-Jurassic paleo-morphology.The results from this study can be useful for the prediction of the Jurassic sweet spots in the western margin of the Ordos Basin. | Hui Yuan Shuai Yin Li Dong Chengqian Tan | 2022 | Energy Geoscience2022,3,4: | 1
A 3D analysis of the occurrence of fractures in hot dry rock reservoirs based on the spatial distribution of natural fractures显示文摘Hot dry rock(HDR)geothermal energy is a kind of widely distributed clean energy with huge reserves. However, its commercial development has been constrained by reservoir stimulation. In the early stage of HDR geothermal energy development, properly determining spatial distribution patterns of natural fractures in HDR reservoirs can effectively guide reservoir stimulation. This study analyzes the spatial distribution of natural fractures by using FracMan software based on the actual geological data and log data of well M-2 in the Matouying Uplift area,Hebei Province. The fracture parameters are counted and Monte Carlo simulation technique is introduced to optimize the parameters, which makes the natural fracture model more accurate and reliable.Furthermore, this study simulates hydraulic fracturing using the model combined with the actual in-situ stress parameters and the construction scheme. As verified by fitting the changes in simulated wellhead pressure during hydraulic fracturing with the actual wellhead pressure data detected during construction, the methods for natural fracture modeling used in this study are scientific and reasonable. The preliminary prediction results show that the displacement design scheme with a pump displacement of 2.0-3.0 m^(3)/min,4.0-5.5 m^(3)/min and 6-7 m^(3)/min in the early, middle and late stages, respectively, has good fracturing effect. The results of this study can be utilized as a reference for preparing development schemes for HDR reservoirs. | Siqing He Bo Feng Jinshou Zhu Xiyao Liu Shuantong ShangGuan Xiaofei Qi Jiulong Liu | 2023 | Energy Geoscience2023,4,4: | 1
Relationship between radiogenic heat production in granitic rocks and emplacement age显示文摘Granites play a crucial role in the Earth's thermal regime and its evolution.Radiogenic heat production(RHP)by the decay of radioactive elements(U,Th,K)in granites is a significant parameter in estimating the thermal structure of the lithosphere.RHP variability of granites with their emplacement ages could provide insights for thermal modeling in different geological epochs. An aggregated RHP from 2877 globally-distributed granitic samples of continental crust are analyzed for this study;these sample cover the entire geological history. The average bulk RHP in all types of granitic rocks of all ages is 2.92±1.86μW/m^(3).The RHP tends to increase gradually with progressively younger geologic emplacement age, based on a statistical analysis of the data. However, the youngest granites do not necessarily have the highest RHP.The mean RHP in 181 representative Cenozoic Himalayan leucogranitesdwhich are the youngest granites found on Earth,is as low as 1.84μW/m^(3).This is probably related to the initial conditions of magma formation, magmatic source material, and differentiation processes in the HimalayaneTibetan plateau.By correcting the decay factor, variations of the RHP in the emplaced granitic rocks are obtained, indicating the changing levels of heat production and different thermal regimes on Earth in various geological epochs. The highest RHP in granitic rocks emplaced in the Archean and Early Proterozoic corresponds to two global-scale collisional events during supercontinent cycles,at 2.7 and 1.9 Ga respectively.RHPs of granites can be an important indicator in the study of Earth's thermal regime and its evolution. | Dawei Liao Dongjun Feng Jun Luo Xiaorui Yun | 2023 | Energy Geoscience2023,4,4: | 1
Insights into moisture content in coals of different ranks by low field nuclear resonance显示文摘The moisture occurrence in coal reservoirs has important significance in the evaluation of gas-bearing properties and production of coalbed methane(CBM).In order to investigate the occurrence mechanism of moisture content of coals,a series of experiments including mercury intrusion porosimetry(MIP),low temperature nitrogen gas absorption/desorption(N_(2)GA)and nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)are conducted in this study to characterize and quantify pore structure properties. The nature of occurrence of moisture content in coal reservoir pores is then divided into four categories by NMR saturation and centrifugation experiments. The bound water content in the adsorption pore accounts for the highest proportion.Based on the relevance of bound water content and its influencing factors, moisture occurrence in coal reservoirs of different ranks is revealed by SPSS statistical methods. The moisture content of low-rank coal is mainly controlled by elemental oxygen and specific surface area, whereas for medium-and high-rank coals, this is controlled mainly by minerals. Our study finds application in CBM evaluation and development. | Yanhui Yang Xiawei Li Yongping Zhang Yonggui Mei Ruixia Ding | 2020 | Energy Geoscience2020,1,3: | 1
Stratigraphic framework of theWufeng-Longmaxi shale in and around the Sichuan Basin,China:Implications for targeting shale gas显示文摘Stratigraphic division and correlation are crucial for the identification of sweet spots and drilling design of shale gas.In this study,a stratigraphic division and correlation was carried out for the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formations in southern China from the prospective of lithostratigraphy, sea level changes, and biostratigraphy using data from seismic investigation, wells, and outcrops. The Wufeng and Longmaxi Formations were respectively divided into four members,Wu 1 and Wu2 for the former and Long 1 and Long 2 for the latter.Of the members,Long 1 was subdivided and its first subdivision(Long 11)was further divided into 4 layers(Long 1^(1)_(1),Long 1^(2)_(1),Long 1^(3)_(1),and Long 1^(4)_(1)).Three eustatic cycles were recognized in the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formations.Cycle I corresponds to the Wufeng Formation with the maximum flooding surface at the top ofWu 1.Cycle II corresponds to Long 1,with the maximum flooding surface at the top of Long 1^(3)_(1).CycleⅢⅢcorresponds to Long 2.Furthermore,4 graptolite biozones(WF1 to WF4)were identified in the Wufeng Formation and 9 graptolite biozones(LM1 to LM9)in the Longmaxi Formation.WF1-2 and WF3-4 correspond to Wu 1 and Wu 2,respectively;and LM1,LM2-4,LM5,LM6,and LM7-9 correspond to Long 1^(1)_(1),Long 1^(2)_(1),Long 1^(3)_(1),Long 1^(4)_(1),and Long 12 and Long 2,respectively.Highquality shales mainly occur in the Wufeng Formation and Long 11.The major intervals that should be investigated with regards to shale gas production include LM1eLM5(10m thick)in the Weiyuan Block and WF1eLM5(20e35m thick)in the Changning Block.Long 1^(1)_(1)is believed to be an optimal target for drilling due to its high TOC content, siliceous content, porosity, microfracture density, and horizontal/vertical permeability ratio. | Hongyan Wang Zhensheng Shi Qun Zhao Dexun Liu Shasha Sun Wei Guo Feng Liang Changmu Lin Xuefan Wang | 2020 | Energy Geoscience2020,1,3: | 1
Lessons learned from hydrothermal to hot dry rock exploration and production显示文摘In this paper,we investigate geothermal exploration and production in 189 hydrothermal projects and 42 hot dry rock projects around the world. The hydrothermal fields for a working hydrothermal system to generate electricity should have the elements of heat source,water-saturated porous or fractured reservoir, caprock, heat transfer pathway, and good heat preservation condition and geothermal power energy intensity of 10-20 MW per km^(2)within at least 5 km^(2)area in tectonically active region. The hot water or steam flow rate in this hydrothermal system is normally larger than 40 L/s with temperature of 150℃or above. The power generated from enhanced geothermal system(EGS)in hot dry rock projects are generally less than 2 MW because the flow rate in most cases is much less than 40 L/s even with the hydraulic fractures using the modern stimulation technology learned from the oil and gas industry. The natural fracture in the subsurface is generally beneficial to the hydraulic fracturing and heat recovery in the hot dry rock. Moreover, the hydraulic fracture parameters, injection rate and well spacing, drilling strategy should be properly designed to avoid the short-circuit between injector and producer and low heat productivity. In the future,CO^(2)enhanced geothermal recovery associated with CO^(2)sequestration in the high temperature oil, gas, and geothermal fields maybe a good choice. On the other hand, both nearreal-time seismic monitoring to limit the pumping rate and the closed-loop of the Eavor-Loop style system without hydraulic fracture can contribute greatly to heat recovery of hot dry rocks and mitigate the risks of the hydraulic fracturing induced earthquake.Furthermore, the hybrid solar and geothermal system performs better than the stand-alone geothermal system. | Shu Jiang Kai Zhang Joseph Moore John McLennan | 2023 | Energy Geoscience2023,4,4: | 0
An experimental study on anisotropy of thermal conductivity in shale显示文摘Thermal conductivity plays a crucial role in heat transfer and geothermal field distribution in the lithosphere.Understanding the anisotropy of thermal conductivity in shale and its influencing factors is significant for resource evaluation in shale oil and gas areas. In this study, the thermal conductivity of shales in the Songliao and Sichuan basins was measured by laser scanning method. The relationship between thermal conductivity and mineral composition, burial depth and stratigraphy was analyzed to investigate the anisotropy of shale thermal conductivity and its influencing factors. The results show that the thermal conductivity of shale ranges from 1.000 to 2.500 W/(m·K)at different angles. The thermal conductivity of shale is positively correlated with the content of high thermal conductivity minerals such as quartz and increases with burial depth. The anisotropy index of shale thermal conductivity ranges from 0.96 to 2.40.As heat flows through multiple laminae, the interfacial thermal resistance and the influence of the medium cause a decrease in the shale thermal conductivity as the angle between the heat flow direction and the laminae increases. The insights obtained are of reference significance for the accurate modeling of the thermal properties of shale sequences and the study of the geothermal field in shale oil and gas areas. | Fang Xie Chuanqing Zhu Boning Tang | 2023 | Energy Geoscience2023,4,4: | 0
Coupled heat-fluid-solid numerical study on heat extraction potential of hot dry rocks based on discrete fracture network model显示文摘Fracture networks within hot dry rock(HDR)geothermal reservoirs are complex, and heat extraction via water injection is thus a coupled process of heat-fluid-solid multifield. In this paper, utilizing the theory of normally distributed random functions,we develop a corresponding pre-processing subprogram to establish a discrete network model of complex fracture distribution in HDR reservoirs;then construct a heat-fluid-solid finite element model for heat extraction via water injection and compare the numerical solution with the analytical solution of the one-dimensional non-isothermal consolidation problem for verification. The numerical simulation results show that the main factors affecting the heat extraction efficiency of HDR reservoirs include fracture width, fracture density, fracture permeability, and matrix permeability. When a HDR reservoir is injected with water for heat extraction, there is a certain threshold value of these influential parameters, beyond which the outlet temperature drops significantly, resulting in an obvious thermal breakthrough. When injecting water for heat extraction, the values of these parameters should be controlled and kept at a reasonable level, otherwise, the HDR reservoir may enter a thermal breakthrough stage in advance, which is not conducive for long-period heat extraction.Influenced by the random distribution of complex fractures, the leading edge of the cold front may present an irregular distribution.During the process of heat extraction, the stress gradually changes from a compressional state to a tensile state, which induces further damage to the HDR reservoir. | Daobing Wang Haiyan Zhu Marembo Micheal Xuanhe Tang Qin Li Xiangyi Yi Dongliang Sun Bo Yu Qiang Liu | 2023 | Energy Geoscience2023,4,4: | 0
Integrated application of gravity, aeromagnetic, and electromagnetic methods in exploring the Ganzi geothermal field,Sichuan Province,China显示文摘The Ganzi geothermal field is located in the Songpan-Ganzi orogenic belt in Sichuan Province. Many hot springs are exposed along the Yalahe valley in Ganzi geothermal field, which is a favorable area for hightemperature geothermal resource exploration. However, the geological model of heat exchange, the regional structure controlling hydrothermal convection and the development model of geothermal reservoirs are still unclear. Therefore, further studies are necessary to meet the geothermal exploration requirements in the middle and deep strata of this geothermal field. In this study,a geological model of the geothermal system of Ganzi geothermal field is proposed. We are convinced that there exists a hydrothermal convection system in the Ganzi geothermal field, the heat transfer of which is accomplished through deep-rooted major faults. Therefore, the identification of deep-rooted major faults and the description of geothermal reservoirs are the research objects of the integrated geophysical methods. The main factors controlling the geothermal reservoirs in the deep-rooted Xianshuihe major fault and Yalahe fault zones are analyzed by using gravity, aeromagnetic, and electromagnetic methods and techniques. The analysis results of regional gravity and aeromagnetic anomalies show that the Xianshuihe major fault has produced obvious gravity and aeromagnetic anomalies on the surface, and thus the position and strike of this fault can be accurately predicted by inversion of the aeromagnetic anomalies.Geothermal reservoirs show low-resistivity anomalies in the electromagnetic profile. The inversion results of the controlled source audio-frequency magnetotelluric(CSAMT)data show that geothermal reservoirs are mainly developed along the Yalahe valley, and the west side of the valley is more favorable for geothermal exploration. This study is of guiding significance to the efficient exploitation and utilization of the Ganzi geothermal field. | Hong Li | 2023 | Energy Geoscience2023,4,4: | 0
Water scaling predication for typical sandstone geothermal reservoirs in the Xi'an Depression显示文摘The Xi'an Depression in the Guanzhong Basin of western China has been suggested to contain geothermal resources that could aid China in achieving carbon neutrality and optimizing energy structure. However, the high concentration of total dissolved solids(TDS)and scale-forming ions in geothermal water from the depression causes severe scaling problems in harvesting geothermal energy. To reduce scale-related problems, accurate identification of scale types and prediction of scaling during geothermal energy utilization are crucial. This study starts with identifying the types and trends of scaling in the study area, using index-based discriminant methods and hydrogeochemical simulation to calculate and analyze the mineral saturation index of water samples from some wellheads and of reconstructed fluid samples of geothermal reservoirs. The results indicate that the scales are mostly calcium carbonate scales rather than sulfate scales as a result of temperature changes.Several portions of the geothermal water systems are found to have distinct mineral scaling components.Quartz and chalcedony are formed in low temperature areas, while carbonate minerals are in high temperature areas.Despite the low iron content of geothermal water samples from the study area, scaling is very common due to scaling-prone iron minerals. The findings can be used to evaluate geothermal drainage systems and guide anti-scaling during geothermal energy utilization in similar settings. | Shuai Ma Yinke Yang Xinyan Lei Bin Yue | 2023 | Energy Geoscience2023,4,4: | 0
Surface geochemical anomaly pattern of medium-to-high temperature geothermal systems in South China and its application显示文摘The existence of thermal storage will correspondingly increase the temperature of surrounding strata and promote the continuous expansion, volatilization, upward migration, and loss of gas in the strata. As a result,a low-concentration gas field will be formed in the strata above geothermal reservoirs.Geothermal reservoirs could in turn heat formation water and increase the solubility of soluble inorganic salts in the surrounding rocks and the total dissolved solids(TDS)content in the formation water.Since water can strongly wet and permeate strata, the dissolved inorganic salts migrate into upper strata along with water, giving rise to the formation of a high-concentration inorganic salt field in the strata above geothermal reservoirs.A higher geothermal reservoir temperature corresponds to more significant characteristics mentioned above. Therefore,a medium-to-high temperature geothermal system has a surface geochemical anomaly pattern of high inorganic salt concentrations and low gas concentrations(also referred to as the high-salt and low-gas pattern). This pattern is applied to the surface geochemical exploration of the two geothermal fields in Guangdong Province,i.e.,the Huangshadong geothermal field in Huizhou City and the Xinzhou geothermal field in Yangjiang City, revealing low-concentration gas fields above both. The application results also show that the exposed thermal spring water in both geological fields has higher concentration of dissolved inorganic salt than the surface water and nearby seawater, forming high-amplitude anomalies on the surface above geothermal reservoirs. These characteristics,as well as the measured temperature at known geothermal wells, verify the validity of the high-salt and low-gas pattern of medium-to-high temperature geothermal systems proposed in this study. Moreover, the high-salt and low-gas pattern proposed predicts three favorable medium-to-high temperature geothermal zones in the surface geochemical exploration of the Shiba Basin near the Huangshadong geothermal field. | Guangzhi Li Guojian Wang Bin Hu Lirong Ning | 2023 | Energy Geoscience2023,4,4: | 0
Factors controlling the distribution of granite reservoirs of hydrothermal system type in South China:A case study of Huangshadong geothermal field in Yuezhong Depression,China显示文摘The granitoids widely distributed in South China are characterized by multi-stage evolution via episodic intrusions,in a complex geodynamic setting.Since granites have high radioactive heat generation and excellent thermal conductivity,a deep moderate-to high-temperature geothermal system can be formed in the presence of high-quality,fissured granite geothermal reservoirs and thermal insulation with appropriate cap rocks. The key to exploring deep geothermal resources is to identify high-quality fissured granite geothermal reservoirs of a certain scale in a thermal anomaly zone with high background heatflow values. To determine the controlling effects of the distribution and development characteristics of granite geothermal reservoirs on the generation and enrichment of deep geothermal resources, this study analyzed the characteristics of the geothermal reservoirs in the Huangshadong geothermal field in the Yuezhong Depression,Guangdong Province, and their controlling effects on the formation of geothermal resources. The results are as follows. The hydrothermal system in the Huangshadong geothermal field mainly distributed in the contact zones between magmatic plutons and surrounding rocks,is significantly controlled by faults, followed by neoid volcanic apparatus and magmatic activities. That is,the geothermal system therein is under joint control of structures and magmas. Moreover, fractured zones of neoid transtensional faults conduct the geothermal water in the hydrothermal system and control its shallow discharge. Therefore, the hydrothermal system in the study area is characterized by the control of transpressional tectonic zone and volcanic apparatus, and geothermal water conduction through fractured zones of transtensional faults. | Jianyun Feng | 2023 | Energy Geoscience2023,4,4: | 0
