| 2 | Photocatalysts for degradation of dyes in industrial effluents:Opportunities and challenges显示文摘Discharging dye contaminants into water is a major concern around the world.Among a variety of methods to treat dye-contaminated water,photocatalytic degradation has gained attention as a tool for treating the colored water.Herein,we review the recent advancements in photocatalysis for dye degradation in industrial effluents by categorizing photocatalyst materials into three generations.First generation photocatalysts are composed of single-component materials (e.g.,TiO2,ZnO,and CdS),while second generation photocatalysts are composed of multiple components in a suspension (e.g.,WO3/NiWO4,BiOl/ZnTiOa,and C3N4/Ag3VO4).Photocatalysts immobilized on solid substrates are regarded as third generation materials (e.g.,FTO/WO3-ZnO,Steel/TiO2-WO3,and Glass/P-TiO2).Photocatalytic degradation mechanisms,factors affecting the dye degradation,and the lesser-debated uncertainties related to the photocatalysis are also discussed to offer better insights into environmental applications.Furthermore,quantum yields of different photocatalysts are calculated,and a performance evaluation method is proposed to compare photocatalyst systems for dye degradation.Finally,we discuss the present limitations of photocatalytic dye degradation for field applications and the future of the technology. | Hassan Anwer Asad Mahmood Jechan Lee Ki-Hyun Kim Jae-Woo Park Alex C.K.Yip | 2019 | Nano Research2019,12,5: | 21 |
| 3 | On-road pollutant emission and fuel consumption characteristics of buses in Beijing显示文摘On-road emission and fuel consumption (FC) levels for Euro III and IV buses fueled on diesel and compressed natural gas (CNG) were compared,and emission and FC characteristics of buses were analyzed based on approximately 28,700 groups of instantaneous data obtained in Beijing using a portable emissions measurement system (PEMS).The experimental results revealed that NOx and PM emissions from CNG buses were decreased by 72.0% and 82.3% respectively,compared with Euro IV diesel buses.Similarly,these emissions were reduced by 75.2% and 96.3% respectively,compared with Euro III diesel buses.In addition,CO 2,CO,HC,NOx,PM emissions and FC of Euro IV diesel buses were reduced by 26.4%,75.2%,73.6%,11.4%,79.1%,and 26.0%,respectively,relative to Euro III diesel buses.The CO 2,CO,HC,NOx,PM emissions and FC factors all decreased with bus speed increased,while increased as bus acceleration increased.At the same time,the emission/FC rates as well as the emission/FC factors exhibited a strong positive correlation with the vehicle specific power (VSP).They all were the lowest when VSP < 0,and then rapidly increased as VSP increased.Furthermore,both the emission/FC rates and emission/FC factors were the highest at accelerations,higher at cruise speeds,and the lowest at decelerations for non-idling buses.These results can provide a base reference to further estimate bus emission and FC inventories in Beijing. | Aijuan Wang Yunshan Ge Jianwei Tan Mingliang Fu Asad Naeem Shah Yan Ding Hong Zhao Bin Liang | 2011 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2011,23,3: | 19 |
| 4 | Effects of continuously regenerating diesel particulate filters on regulated emissions and number-size distribution of particles emitted from a diesel engine显示文摘The effects of continuously regenerating diesel particulate filter (CRDPF) systems on regulated gaseous emissions, and number-size distribution and mass of particles emanated from a diesel engine have been investigated in this study. Two CRDPF units (CRDPF-1 and CRDPF-2) with different specifications were separately retrofitted to the engine running with European steady-state cycle (ESC). An electrical low pressure impactor (ELPI) was used for particle number-size distribution measurement and mass estimation. The conversion/reduction rate (R CR ) of hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) across CRDPF-1 was 83% and 96.3%, respectively. Similarly, the R CR of HC and CO and across CRDPF-2 was 91.8% and 99.1%, respectively. The number concentration of particles and their concentration peaks; nuclei mode, accumulation mode and total particles; and particle mass were highly reduced with the CRDPF units. The nuclei mode particles at downstream of CRDPF-1 and CRDPF-2 decreased by 99.9% to 100% and 97.8% to 99.8% respectively; and the particle mass reduced by 73% to 92.2% and 35.3% to 72.4%, respectively, depending on the engine conditions. | 5 | Predictive value and main determinants of abnormal features of intraoperative cholangiography during cholecystectomy显示文摘BACKGROUND:The major issue with intraoperative cholangiography (IOC) is whether its diagnostic accuracy for common bile duct (CBD) stones matches that of other diagnostic procedures,and thus,whether it will become a routine diagnostic procedure.The current study aimed to address the main determinants of CBD stone diagnosis in IOC among an Iranian population.METHODS:In a retrospective review database-based study conducted in Taleghani Hospital in Tehran between 2006 and 2008,baseline data and perioperative information of 2060 patients (male to female ratio 542:1518,mean age 53.7 years) who were candidates for cholecystectomy and underwent concomitant IOC for confirming CBD stones were reviewed.The predictive power of this procedure for diagnosis of abnormal biliary ducts with the focus on biliary stones was determined.RESULTS:Overall mortality and morbidity following cholecystectomy in the study population were 0.6% and 2.6%,respectively.Both early mortality and morbidity due to cholecystectomy were higher in male than female.The prevalence of CBD stones in IOC was 3.4% (5.2% in male and 2.8% in female,P=0.008).Among those without gallstones,8.7% had CBD stones and only 3.1% had concomitant gallstones and CBD stones.The main predictors of stone appearance as an abnormal feature of IOC during cholecystectomy were:advanced age (OR=1.022,P=0.001),male gender (OR=1.498,P=0.050),history of abdominal surgery (OR=1.543,P=0.040) and preoperative endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (OR=5.400,P<0.001).CONCLUSIONS:IOC is a safe and accurate method for the assessment of bile duct anatomy and stones.Therefore,the routine use of IOC within cholecystectomy seems reasonable and is recommended. | Shahram Yousefpour Azary Heshmat Kalbasi Ali Setayesh Mirhadi Mousavi Asad Hashemi Mahsa Khodadoostan Mohammad Reza Zali Amir Houshang Mohammad Alizadeh | 2011 | Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Diseases International2011,10,3: | 11 |
| 6 | Impacts of continuously regenerating trap and particle oxidation catalyst on the NO_2 and particulate matter emissions emitted from diesel engine显示文摘Two continuously regenerating diesel particulate filter(CRDPF) with different configurations and one particles oxidation catalyst(POC) were employed to perform experiments in a controlled laboratory setting to evaluate their effects on NO 2,smoke and particle number emissions.The results showed that the application of the after-treatments increased the emission ratios of NO 2 /NOx significantly.The results of smoke emissions and particle number(PN) emissions indicated that both CRDPFs had sufficient capacity to remove more than 90% of total particulate matter(PM) and more than 97% of solid particles.However,the POC was able to remove the organic components of total PM,and only partially to remove the carbonaceous particles with size less than 30 nm.The negligible effects of POC on larger particles were observed due to its honeycomb structure leads to an inadequate residence time to oxidize the solid particles or trap them.The particles removal efficiencies of CRDPFs had high degree of correlations with the emission ratio of NO 2 /NOx.The PN emission results from two CRDPFs indicated that more NO 2 generating in diesel oxidation catalyst section could obtain the higher removal efficiency of solid particles.However this also increased the risk of NO 2 exposure in atmosphere. | Zhihua Liu Yunshan Ge Jianwei Tan Chao He Asad Naeem Shah Yan Ding LinxiaoYu Wei Zhao | 2012 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,4: | 11 |

| 8 | SCOUR MITIGATION AT BRIDGE PIERS USING SACRIFICIAL PILES显示文摘To mitigate scour around bridge piers, sacrificial piles are economic method where natural processes are involved. The arrangement should be such that scoured materials from the sacrificial piles should have enough volume to fill the scour hole created upstream of the pier in such a way that sediments are trapped inside the scour hole. This concept differs from earlier study made with sacrificial piles that mainly deals to reduce the strength of horseshoe vortex. To determine the effect of sacrificial piles for scour mitigation, alternative arrangements of piles were tested in front of a rectangular pier under clear-water condition and found that when the group of piles is placed at a distance of twice the projected width of the pier, for which percentage of blockage of the pier width is 60%, the scour volume can be reduced upto 61% while the maximum scour depth can be reduced upto 50%. | M. | 9 | Validating a point of care lactate meter in adult patients with sepsis presenting to the emergency department of a tertiary care hospital of a low-to middle-income country显示文摘BACKGROUND: Timely identifi cation of high blood lactate levels in septic patients may allow faster detection of those patients requiring immediate resuscitation. Point-of-care(POC) testing is being increasingly utilized in the emergency department(ED). We examined the accuracy and timesaving effect of a handheld POC lactate device for the measurement of fingertip and whole blood lactate as compared with reference laboratory blood testing in septic ED patients.METHODS: A convenience sample of adult ED patients receiving serum lactate testing were enrolled prospectively in the ED of a multidisciplinary tertiary care hospital serving the population of one of the major cities of Pakistan. Participants underwent fi ngertip POC lactate measurement with a portable device and simultaneous whole blood sampling for analysis by both the POC lactate device and standard laboratory method. Lactate measurements were compared by intraclass correlation(ICC) and Bland and Altman plots.RESULTS: Forty-three septic patients were included in the study. The fingertip POC & whole blood POC lactate measurements each correlated tightly with the reference method(ICC=0.93 & ICC=0.92, respectively). | 11 | Can emergency physicians perform extended compression ultrasound for the diagnosis of lower extremity deep vein thrombosis?显示文摘BACKGROUND:Current point-of-care ultrasound protocols in the evaluation of lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can miss isolated femoral vein clots.Extended compression ultrasound (ECUS) includes evaluation of the femoral vein from the femoral vein/deep femoral vein bifurcation to the adductor canal.Our objective is to determine if emergency physicians (EPs) can learn ECUS for lower extremity DVT evaluation after a focused training session.METHODS:Prospective study at an urban academic center.Participants with varied ultrasound experience received instruction in ECUS prior to evaluation.Two live models with varied levels of difficult sonographic anatomy were intentionally chosen for the evaluation.Each participant scanned both models.Pre-and post-study surveys were completed.RESULTS:A total of 96 ultrasound examinations were performed by 48 participants (11 attendings and 37 residents).Participants' assessment scores averaged 95.8% (95% CI 93.3%-98.3%) on the easier anatomy live model and averaged 92.3% (95% CI 88.4%-96.2%) on the difficult anatomy model.There were no statistically significant differences between attendings and residents.On the model with easier anatomy,all but 1 participant identified and compressed the proximal femoral vein successfully,and all participants identified and compressed the mid and distal femoral vein.With the difficult anatomy,97.9% (95% CI93.8%-102%) identified and compressed the proximal femoral vein,whereas 93.8% (95% CI 86.9%-100.6%) identified and compressed the mid femoral vein,and 91.7% (95% CI83.9%-99.5%) identified and compressed the distal femoral vein.CONCLUSION:EPs at our institution were able to perform ECUS with good reproducibility after a focused training session. | Elaine Situ-LaCasse Helpees Guirguis Lucas Friedman Asad E.Patanwala Seth E.Cohen Srikar Adhikari | 2019 | World Journal of Emergency Medicine2019,10,4: | 6 |

Many devices in active, hybrid, and semi-active structural control systems which are used as controllable force devices are costly to build and maintain. The passive control reinforced concrete frame (PCRCF) reinforced with high strength steel only in the columns presented here provides structural systems more resistance to lateral earthquake loadings at comparatively lower cost. The effectiveness is demonstrated by a nonlinear static analysis using fiber model for a single story single bay frame. The study shows that the use of high performance steel in columns pre- vents formation of plastic hinges at the critical column base sections and failures are always initiated by reinforcement yielding at the beam ends. Furthermore, after experiencing severe lateral drift, the passive control design has small residual displacements compared to ordinary reinforced concrete frames. | 14 | Emission characteristics of offshore fishing ships in the Yellow Bo Sea, China显示文摘Maritime transport has been playing a decisive role in global trade. Its contribution to the air pollution of the sea and coastal areas has been widely recognized. The air pollutant emission inventories of several harbors in China have already been established. However,the emission factors of local ships have not been addressed comprehensively, and thus are lacking from the emission inventories. In this study, on-board emission tests of eight diesel-powered offshore fishing ships were conducted near the coastal region of the northern Yellow Bo Sea fishing ground of Dalian, China. Results show that large amounts of fine particles(< 0.5 μm, 90%) were found in maneuvering mode, which were about five times higher than those during cruise mode. Emission rates as well as emission factors based on both distance and fuel were determined during the cruise and maneuvering modes(including departure and arrival). Average emission rates and distance-based emission factors of CO, HC and PM were much higher during the maneuvering mode as compared with the cruise mode. However, the average emission rate of Nitrous Oxide(NOx) was higher during the cruise mode as compared with the maneuvering modes. | 15 | Intrahepatic distribution of hepatitis B virus antigens in patients with and without hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘AIM: To study the intrahepatic expression of hepatitis B surface antigen(HBs Ag) and hepatitis B core antigen(HBc Ag) in chronic hepatitis B patients with and without hepatocellular carcinoma. METHODS: A total of 33 chronic hepatitis B patients(mean age of 40.3 ± 2.5 years), comprising of 14 HBe Ag positive and 19 HBe Ag negative patients; and 13 patients with hepatitis B virus related hepatocellular carcinoma(mean age of 49.6 ± 4.7 years), were included in our study. Immunohistochemical staining for HBc Ag and HBs Ag was done using standard streptavidin-biotin-immunoperoxidase technique on paraffin-embedded liver biopsies. The HBc Agand HBs Ag staining distributions and patterns were described according to a modified classification system. RESULTS: Compared to the HBe Ag negative patients, the HBe Ag positive patients were younger, had higher mean HBV DNA and alanine transaminases levels. All the HBe Ag positive patients had intrahepatic HBc Ag staining; predominantly with 'diffuse' distribution(79%) and 'mixed cytoplasmic/nuclear ' pattern(79%). In comparison, only 5% of the HBe Ag-negative patients had intrahepatic HBc Ag staining. However, the intrahepatic HBs Ag staining has wider distribution among the HBe Ag negative patients, namely; majority of the HBe Ag negative cases had 'patchy' HBs Ag distribution compared to 'rare' distribution among the HBe Ag positive cases. All but one patient with HCC were HBe Ag negative with either undetectable HBV DNA or very low level of viremia. Intrahepatic HBc Ag and HBs Ag were seen in 13(100%) and 10(77%) of the HCC patients respectively. Interestingly, among the 9 HCC patients on anti-viral therapy with suppressed HBV DNA, HBc Ag and HBs Ag were detected in tumor tissues but not the adjacent liver in 4(44%) and 1(11%) patient respectively. | 16 | Structural and Functional Analysis of NS1 and NS2 Proteins of H1N1 Subtype显示文摘Influenza A virus (H1N1), a genetic reassortment of endemic strains of human, avian and swine flu, has crossed species barrier to human and apparently acquired the capability of human to human transmission. Some strains of H5N1 subtype are highly virulent because NS1 protein inhibits antiviral interferon α/β production. Another protein NS2 mediates export of viral ribonucleoprotein from nucleus to the cytoplasm through export signal. In this paper, we have studied structure-function relationships of these proteins of H1N1 subtype and have determined the cause of their pathogenicity. Our results showed that non-conservative mutations slightly stabilized or destabi- lized structural domains of NS1 or NS1-dsRNA complex, hence slightly increased or decreased the function of NS1 protein and consequently enhanced or reduced the pathogenicity of the H1N1 virus. NS2 protein of different strains carried non-conservative mutations in different domains, resulting in slight loss of function. These mutations slightly decreased the pathogenicity of the virus. | 17 | Change of soil productivity in three different soils after long-term field fertilization treatments显示文摘Soil productivity(SP) without external fertilization influence is an important indicator for the capacity of a soil to support crop yield.However,there have been difficulties in estimating values of SPs for soils after various long-term field treatments because the treatment without external fertilization is used but is depleted in soil nutrients,leading to erroneous estimation.The objectives of this study were to estimate the change of SP across different cropping seasons using pot experiments,and to evaluate the steady SP value(which is defined by the basal contribution of soil itself to crop yield) after various longterm fertilization treatments in soils at different geographical locations.The pot experiments were conducted in Jinxian of Jiangxi Province with paddy soil,Zhengzhou of Henan Province with fluvo-aquic soil,and Gongzhuling of Jilin Province with black soils,China.Soils were collected after long-term field fertilization treatments of no fertilizer(control;CK-F),chemical fertilizer(NPK-F),and combined chemical fertilizer with manure(NPKM-F).The soils received either no fertilizer(F0) or chemical fertilizer(F1) for 3-6 cropping seasons in pots,which include CK-P(control;no fertilizer from long-term field experiments for pot experiments),NPK-P(chemical fertilizer from long-term field experiments for pot experiments),and NPKM-P(combined chemical and organic fertilizers from long-term field experiments for pot experiments).The yield data were used to calculate SP values.The initial SP values were high,but decreased rapidly until a relatively steady SP was achieved at or after about three cropping seasons for paddy and fluvo-aquic soils.The steady SP values in the third cropping season from CK-P,NPK-P,and NPKM-P treatments were 37.7,44.1,and 50.0% in the paddy soil,34.2,38.1,and 50.0% in the fluvo-aquic soil,with the highest value observed in the NPKM-P treatment for all soils.However,further research is required in the black soils to incorporate more than three cropping seasons.The partial least squares path mode(PLS-PM) showed that total N(nitrogen) and C/N ratio(the ratio of soil organic carbon and total N) had positive effects on the steady SP for all three soils.These findings confirm the significance of the incorporation of manure for attaining high soil productivity.Regulation of the soil C/N ratio was the other main factor for steady SP through fertilization management. | LIU Kai-lou HAN Tian-fu HUANG Jing ZHANG Shui-qing GAO Hong-jun ZHANG Lu Asad Shah HUANG Shao-min ZHU Ping GAO Su-duan MA Chang-bao XUE Yan-dong ZHANG Huimin | 2020 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2020,19,3: | 5 |

| 19 | Chronic opioids in gastroparesis: relationship with gastrointestinal symptoms, healthcare utilization and employment显示文摘AIM To examine the relationship of chronic scheduled opioid use on symptoms, healthcare utilization and employment in gastroparesis(Gp) patients. Methods Patients referred to our tertiary care academic center from May 2016 to July 2017, with established diagnosis or symptoms suggestive of Gp filled out the Patient Assessment of Upper GI Symptoms, abdominal pain and demographics questionnaires, and underwent gastric emptying and blood tests. They were asked about taking pain medicines and the types, doses, and duration. We used Mann Whitney U test, Analysis of Variance, Student's t test and χ2 tests where appropriate for data analyses.RESULTS Of 223 patients with delayed gastric emptying, 158(70.9%) patients were not taking opioids(Gp NO), 22(9.9%) were taking opioids only as needed, while 43(19.3%) were on chronic(> 1 mo) scheduled opioids(Gp CO), of which 18 were taking opioids forreasons that included gastroparesis and/or stomach pain. Median morphine equivalent use was 60 mg per day. Gp CO reported higher severities of many gastrointestinal symptoms compared to Gp NO including nausea(mean ± SE of mean of 4.09 ± 0.12 vs 3.41 ± 0.12, P = 0.011), retching(2.86 ± 0.25 vs 1.98 ± 0.14, P = 0.003), vomiting(2.93 ± 0.24 vs 2.07 ± 0.15, P = 0.011), early satiety(4.17 ± 0.19 vs 3.57 ± 0.12, P = 0.004), post-prandial fullness(4.14 ± 0.18 vs 3.63 ± 0.11, P = 0.022), loss of appetite(3.64 ± 0.21 vs 3.04 ± 0.13, P = 0.039), upper abdominal pain(3.86 ± 0.20 vs 2.93 ± 0.13, P = 0.001), upper abdominal discomfort(3.74 ± 0.19 vs 3.09 ± 0.13, P = 0.031), heartburn during day(2.55 ± 0.27 vs 1.89 ± 0.13, P = 0.032), heartburn on lying down(2.76 ± 0.28 vs 1.94 ± 0.14, P = 0.008), chest discomfort during day(2.42 ± 0.20 vs 1.83 ± 0.12, P = 0.018), chest discomfort at night(2.40 ± 0.23 vs 1.61 ± 0.13, P = 0.003), regurgitation/reflux during day(2.77 ± 0.25 vs 2.18 ± 0.13, P = 0.040) and bitter/acid/sour taste in the mouth(2.79 ± 0.27 vs 2.11 ± 0.14, P = 0.028). Gp CO had a longer duration of nausea per day(median of 7 h vs 4 h for Gp NO, P = 0.037), and a higher number of vomiting episodes per day(median of 3 vs 2 for Gp NO, P = 0.002). Their abdominal pain more frequently woke them up at night(78.1% vs 57.3%, P = 0.031). They had a lower employment rate(33.3% vs 54.2%, P = 0.016) and amongst those who were employed less number of working hours per week(median of 23 vs 40, P = 0.005). They reported higher number of hospitalizations in the last 1 year(mean ± SE of mean of 2.90 ± 0.77 vs 1.26 ± 0.23, P = 0.047). CONCLUSION Gp CO had a higher severity of many gastrointestinal symptoms, compared to Gp NO. | 20 | Nitrogen(N) metabolism related enzyme activities,cell uitrastructure and nutrient contents as affected by N level and barley genotype显示文摘Development of the new crop cultivars with high yield under low nitrogen(N) input is a fundamental approach to enhance agricultural sustainability,which is dependent on the exploitation of the elite germplasm.In the present study,four barley genotypes(two Tibetan wild and two cultivated),differing in N use efficiency(NUE),were characterized for their physiological and biochemical responses to different N levels.Higher N levels significantly increased the contents of other essential nutrients(P,K,Ca,Fe,Cu and Mn),and the increase was more obvious for the N-efficient genotypes(ZD9 and XZ149).The observation of ultrastructure showed that chloroplast structure was severely damaged under low nitrogen,and the two high N efficient genotypes were relatively less affected.The activities of the five N metabolism related enzymes,i.e.,nitrate reductase(NR),glutamine synthetase(GS),nitrite reductase(NiR),glutamate synthase(GOGAT) and glutamate dehydrogenase(GDH) all showed the substantial increase with the increased N level in the culture medium.However the increased extent differed among the four genotypes,with the two N efficient genotypes showing more increase in comparison with the other two genotypes with relative N inefficiency(HXRL and XZ56).The current findings showed that a huge difference exists in low N tolerance among barley genotypes,and improvement of some physiological traits(such as enzymes) could be helpful for increasing N utilization efficiency. | Jawad Munawar Shah Syed Asad Hussain Bukhari ZENG Jian-bin QUAN Xiao-yan Essa Ali Noor Muhammad ZHANG Guo-ping | 2017 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2017,16,1: | 4 |
