3The effects of tannins-containing ground pine bark diet upon nutrient digestion,nitrogen balance,and mineral retention in meat goats显示文摘Background:Pine bark is a rich source of phytochemical compounds including tannins,phenolic acids,anthocyanins,and fatty acids.These phytochemicals have potential to significantly impact on animal health and animal production.The goal of this work is to measure the effects of tannins in ground pine bark as a partial feed replacement on feed intake,dietary apparent digestibility,nitrogen balance,and mineral retention in meat goats.Results:Eighteen Kiko cross goats(initial BW = 31.8 ± 1.49 kg) were randomly assigned to three treatment groups(n = 6).Dietary treatments were tested:control(0%pine bark powder(PB) and 30%wheat straw(WS));15%PB and 15%WS,and 30%PB and 0%WS.Although dry matter(DM) intake and digestibility were not affected(P>0.10) by feeding PB,neutral detergent fiber(linear;P = 0.01),acid detergent fiber(linear;P = 0.001) and lignin digestibility(linear;P = 0.01) decreased,and crude protein(CP) digestibility tended to decrease(P = 0.09) as PB increased in the diet,apparent retention of Ca(P=0.09),P(P = 0.03),Mg(P = 0.01),Mn(P = 0.01),Zn(P = 0.01) and Fe(P = 0.09) also increased linearly.Nitrogen intake and fecal N excretion were not affected(P>0.05) by addition of PB in the diet,but N balance in the body was quadratically increased(P < 0.01) in the 15%PB diet compared to other diets.This may be due to more rumen escape protein and less excreted N in the urine with the 15%PB diet.The study showed that a moderate level of tannin-containing pine bark supplementation could improve gastrointestinal nitrogen balance with the aim of improving animal performance.Conclusion:These results suggest that tannin-containing PB has negative impact on fiber,lignin,and protein digestibility,but positively impacted on N-balance.Byeng Ryel Min Sandra Solaiman Thomas Terrill Aina Ramsay Irene Mueller-Harvey 2015Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2015,6,3:1

6Peanut skin in diet alters average daily gain, ruminal and blood metabolites,and carcass traits associated with Haemonchus contortus infection in meat goats~☆显示文摘The aim of this study was to determine the effects of tannin-rich peanut skin(PS)supplementation on growth performance,ruminal and blood metabolites,and carcass traits associated with internal parasite infection in meat goats under confined conditions.Twenty-one Kiko crossbred male goats were blocked by body weight(BW)and randomly assigned to one of 3 treatment groups.Experimental diets contained different levels of peanut(Arachis hypogaea)skin replacing alfalfa(Medicago sativa)pellets(ALP)in a control diet.Experimental treatments included:30% ALP(control),15% PS and 15% ALP,and 30% PS.Peanut skin was incorporated in the grain mix portion of the diets.Animals were fed once daily,and the intake was adjusted every 3 to 4 d.Each animal was each artificially infected with 5,000 larvae of the 3 rd stage of barber’s pole worm(Haemonchus contortus).Body weights,dry matter intake(DMI),and fecal samples for fecal egg counts(FEC)were taken at d 0,12,23,and 41.Rumen fluid and blood samples were collected at d 45.The performance period lasted 45 d and at the completion of the study,goats were harvested,and carcass characteristics,abomasal worm counts were measured.The results showed that DMI,BW,carcass traits,and meat color were not affected by PS supplementation,whereas average daily gain(ADG,P<0.01),blood glucose(P<0.001),phosphorus(P<0.05),and cholesterol levels(P<0.001)significantly increased with increasing levels of PS supplementation.There was a linear(P<0.01)reduction in rumen acetate to propionate ratio,ammonia-nitrogen,FEC,and H.contortus worm counts,with increasing levels of PS supplementation.This study shows that PS supplementation up to 30% of the diet can improve ADG and rumen fermentation while reducing gastrointestinal parasite infection in meat goats.Byeng R.Min Abrahamsen Frank Nar Gurung Jung H.Lee Jong W.Joo Wilmer Pacheco 2019Animal Nutrition2019,,3:1

13The role of seaweed as a potential dietary supplementation for enteric methane mitigation in ruminants: Challenges and opportunities显示文摘Seaweeds are macroalgae,which can be of many different morphologies,sizes,colors,and chemical profiles.They include brown,red,and green seaweeds.Brown seaweeds have been more investigated and exploited in comparison to other seaweed types for their use in animal feeding studies due to their large sizes and ease of harvesting.Recent in vitro and in vivo studies suggest that plant secondary compound-containing seaweeds(e.g.,halogenated compounds,phlorotannins,etc.)have the potential to mitigate enteric methane(CH_(4))emissions from ruminants when added to the diets of beef and dairy cattle.Red seaweeds including Asparagopsis spp.are rich in crude protein and halogenated compounds compared to brown and green seaweeds.When halogenated-containing red seaweeds are used as the active ingredient in ruminant diets,bromoform concentration can be used as an indicator of antimethanogenic properties.Phlorotannin-containing brown seaweed has also the potential to decrease CH_(4) production.However,numerous studies examined the possible anti-methanogenic effects of marine seaweeds with inconsistent results.This work reviews existing data associated with seaweeds and in vitro and in vivo rumen fermentation,animal performance,and enteric CH4 emissions in ruminants.Increased understanding of the seaweed supplementation related to rumen fermentation and its effect on animal performance and CH_(4) emissions in ruminants may lead to novel strategies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions while improving animal productivity.Byeng R.Min David Parker David Brauer Heidi Waldrip Catherine Lockard Kristin Hales Alexia Akbay Simona Augyte 2021Animal Nutrition2021,,4:1
