1Impacts of grassland fence on the behavior and habitat area of the critically endangered Przewalski's gazelle around the Qinghai Lake显示文摘The trend of fencing grassland as livestock paddocks is spreading on the Eurasian steppe,however,its impacts on grassland wildlife are little known.In order to explore such impacts,we carried out a field study on how grassland fencing impacts Przewalski's gazelle(Procapra przewalskii),a species listed as EN(Endangered) by SSC/IUCN,on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.The results revealed that(1) in the fenced areas,daily movement distance of Przewalski's gazelle was 5081±1187 m(Hudong-Ketu) and 4110±912 m(Yuanzhe),which was much shorter than the 7223±546 m recorded in an unfenced area(Kuaierma);(2) the feeding bout duration of Przewalski's gazelle was much shorter in the fenced habitat;(3) the frequency of walking along both high or low fence lines reached about 81%;while the frequency of jumping across the low fence line was only about 1.2% and frequency of crawling through the bottom of the high fence lines was about 17.8%;(4) the size of post-fencing habitat decreased to about 20% and 6% of the sizes of pre-fencing habitat in Hudong-Ketu and Yuanzhe areas respectively,but no clear change in the size of habitat area was found in the unfenced Kuaierma area;and(5) the fence lines impaired the possibility of gazelles to escape from predators and occasionally trapped the Przewalski's gazelle which failed to jump over the fence lines.Death occurrence of Przewalski's gazelle in the intensively fenced area,including gazelles strangled by fence lines and predated by wolves,reached 5% of the population size in Yuanzhe and up to 15%-20% in Hudong-Ketu.This study highlights the negative impacts of grassland fencing on Przewalski's gazelle and proposes measures for integrating conservation of this gazelle with livestock management practice.YOU ZhangQiang JIANG ZhiGang LI ChunWang MALLON David 2013Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,17:11
2温带草原退化后土壤微生物群落结构和功能的变化显示文摘草原退化是草原生产力维持面临的一个重大挑战,这一过程显著影响着草原生态系统的能量流动和土壤养分变化过程,进而直接或间接地影响着土壤微生物。我们的研究目的首先是调查不同草原退化程度(即未退化、中度退化和严重退化)如何影响着内蒙古温带草原的土壤微生物组成、多样性和功能,其次是阐明哪些生物和非生物因素导致了这些变化。我们的研究主要通过高通量测序技术分析土壤微生物的群落组成,并且采用FAPROTAX工具和FUNGuild工具分别预测细菌群落和真菌群落的功能。研究发现:草原退化显著降低了土壤细菌的多样性,但对真菌多样性影响不大。地下生物量、土壤有机碳和总氮与细菌的多样性变化呈显著正相关关系。草原退化显著增加了绿弯菌门的相对丰度(由2.48%提高到8.40%),降低了厚壁菌门的相对丰度(由3.62%降低到1.08%)。其次,草原退化也显著增加了球囊菌门的相对丰度(从0.17%提高到1.53%),降低了担子菌门的相对丰度(从19.30%降低到4.83%)。致病菌的相对丰度在草原退化过程中显著下降。此外,草原退化对土壤细菌群落的功能有显著的影响,尤其是与土壤碳氮循环相关的土壤细菌群落。我们的结果表明,土壤细菌群落对草原退化的响应比真菌群落更敏感。Yang Yu Lang Zheng Yijun Zhou Weiguo Sang Jianing Zhao Lu Liu Chao Li Chunwang Xiao 2021Journal of Plant Ecology2021,14,3:5

5Biogeographical patterns of the diet of Palearctic badger:Is badger an earthworm specialist predator?显示文摘Badgers were hypothesized as an earthworm specialist predator.We reviewed spatial patterns and food habits of the Eurasian badger(Meles spp.) in relation to geographical variables like latitude,elevation,aspects,and environmental variables,such as temperature,snow cover depth,precipitation,primary productivity,and human influence.The relative frequencies of occurrence of food items in the diets of badgers in 19 studies across 22 localities worldwide were included in the analysis plus the data from our study on the badger diet on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.Principal component analysis(PCA) was used to extract the main components of dietary composition.Multiple regression analysis was applied to reveal the relationship between trophic diversity and the main PCA factors and biogeographical variables.We found a clear latitudinal gradient in the dietary composition of badgers,which was characterized by a greater consumption of insects and reptile in southern area and a higher intake of earthworm in northern regions.Nevertheless,badgers are not an earthworm specialist predator.Furthermore,trophic diversity of badger diets was significantly positively correlated with latitude and human activity.Abundance and availability of foods appear to determine badger foraging tactics.Badgers are adept in exploiting local resources and our results confirm that badgers are generalist predators with opportunistic foraging behavior across their entire distribution range.LI Feng LUO ZhenHua LI ChunLin LI ChunWang JIANG ZhiGang 2013Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,17:3
6Mapping Microscale Strain Fields Around a Crack Tip in Molybdenum Via Geometric Phase Analysis and Digital Image Correlation显示文摘Uniaxial tension tests were conducted on single-edge-notched tensile specimens of pure molybdenum with a mesh grid pattern in front of the notch. A series of images of crack initialization and propagation with a distorted mesh grid pattern were obtained by means of in situ scanning electron microscopy. Strain fields around the crack tip were mapped successively using geometric phase analysis and digital image correlation techniques, and then compared with the predictions obtained through linear elastic fracture mechanics(LEFM). 9Effects of odors on behaviors of captive Amur leopards Panthera pardus orientalis显示文摘Captive environments often fail to resemble the wild environment in respects of limited space,unchanging habitat,lack of stimulus and contingency. Common animal welfare problems which occur in captive animals include low behavioral diversity,abnormal behavior and excessive inactivity. Environmental enrichment,as an effective strategy to tackle these problems and promote mental health of captive animals,has been recognized as an important principal for captive animal management. Among all the enrichment techniques,olfactory enrichment is a simple and effective method for improving the well-being of the olfactory sensitive felids. Behavioral problems were observed in six Amur leopards Panthera pardus orientalis at Beijing Zoological Garden. These were held in the older type exhibits which have now been rebuilt. These behaviors include stereotypic behavior and excessive inactivity caused by the spatially limited enclosures with low levels of stimuli. To determine the effects of predator,prey,and herb odors as potential enrichment materials for captive leopards,we conducted olfactory enrichment experiments for the leopards and tested the effects of nutmeg Myristica fragrans,feces of roe deer Capreolus capreolus and urine of Amur tiger Panthera tigris altaica to test for an increase in behavioral repertoire and activity. Odors provided in this study were also believed to improve the psychological and physiological health of individuals. To standardize the method of presentation the odors were introduced to the enclosures by rubbing or spraying onto a clean towel. Our results show that the selected three odors effectively increased the behavioral diversity. Ten new behavior types were observed in the nutmeg experiment,eight in the feces of roe deer experiment and six in the tiger urine experiment. Among the three odors,cats responded to nutmeg for the longest duration,followed by tiger urine and feces of roe deer. Leopards showed more play behavior in presence of nutmeg while more investigatory behavior in presences of feces of roe deer and tiger urine. Providing novel odors increased the spatial use of the exhibit and the animal's increased use of the logs,sleeping platforms and bars in the cages. 20中国植物叶片硫含量的空间变异与适应机制显示文摘硫是植物生长发育和形态建成所必需的营养元素之一,并在其非生物胁迫抗性和环境适应等方面发挥着重要作用。因此,揭示植物叶片硫含量(leaf sulfur content,LSC)的空间变异规律和适应机制,将有助于我们进一步了解植物的进化机制以及功能元素利用策略。本研究采用统一的采样流程和测试方法,构建了中国80个典型生态系统(包括31个森林、38个草原和11个荒漠)、2207种植物叶片硫含量的实测数据库,系统地评估了不同植物生长型(PGFs)和生态系统之间LSC的差异,并探讨了LSC的空间变异规律及其主要环境驱动因素。研究结果表明:(1)中国区域自然植被LSC的变化范围为0.15–48.64 g·kg^(-1),平均值为2.13±0.04 g·kg^(-1)。(2)LSC在不同生态系统和植被类型之间存在显著的空间变异特征。尤其发现干旱地区或草本植物的LSC较高。叶片在干旱、低温和强紫外线辐射环境中倾向于积累更多的硫,可能是植物增强胁迫生境抗逆性的重要途径。(3)温度、降水、辐射、土壤硫含量和干旱的交互作用共同调控着LSC,并解释了其79%的空间变异;而系统发育对LSC空间变异没有显著影响。本研究从中国区域尺度揭示了LSC的空间变异规律,证实LSC在植物应对极端环境的重要作用及其机制,拓展了人们对硫的生物功能的认识。Wenzong Zhao Chunwang Xiao Mingxu Li Li Xu Nianpeng He 2022Journal of Plant Ecology2022,15,4:1
