| 1 | Household air pollution and lung cancer in China:a review of studies in Xuanwei显示文摘Over half of the world's population is exposed to household air pollution from the burning of solid fuels at home. Household air pollution from solid fuel use is a leading risk factor for global disease and remains a major public health problem, especially in low- and mid-income countries. This is a particularly serious problem in China, where many people in rural areas still use coal for household heating and cooking. This review focuses on several decades of research carried out in Xuanwei County, Yunnan Province, where household coal use is a major source of household air pollution and where studies have linked household air pollution exposure to high rates of lung cancer. We conducted a series of case-control and cohort studies in Xuanwei to characterize the lung cancer risk in this population and the factors associated with it. We found lung cancer risk to vary substantially between different coal types, with a higher risk associated with smoky(i.e., bituminous) coal use compared to smokeless(i.e., anthracite) coal use. The installation of a chimney in homes resulted in a substantial reduction in lung cancer incidence and mortality. | 3 | Characterization of Genome-Wide Microsatellites of Saccharina japonica Based on a Preliminary Assembly of Illumina Sequencing Reads显示文摘Microsatellites or simple sequence repeats(SSR) function widely and locate dependently in genome. However, their characteristics are often ignored due to the lack of genomic sequences of most species. Kelp(Saccharina japonica), a brown macroalga, is extensively cultured in China. In this study, the genome of S. japonica was surveyed using an Illumina sequencing platform, and its microsatellites were characterized. The preliminarily assembled genome was 469.4 Mb in size, with a scaffold N_(50) of 20529 bp. Among the 128370 identified microsatellites, 90671, 25726 and 11973 were found in intergenic regions, introns and exons, averaging 339.3, 178.8 and 205.4 microsatellites per Mb, respectively. These microsatellites distributed unevenly in S. japonica genome. Mononucleotide motifs were the most abundant in the genome, while trinucleotide ones were the most prevalent in exons. The microsatellite abundance decreased significantly with the increase of motif repeat numbers, and the microsatellites with a small number of repeats accounted for a higher proportion of the exons than those of the intergenic regions and introns. C/G-rich motifs were more common in exons than in intergenic regions and introns. These characteristics of microsatellites in S. japonica genome may associate with their functions, and ultimately their adaptation and evolution. Among the 120140 pairs of designed microsatellite primers, approximately 75% were predicted to be able to amplify S. japonica DNA. | 11 | Different mechanisms underlying divergent responses of autotrophic and heterotrophic respiration to long-term throughfall reduction in a warm-temperate oak forest显示文摘Background:There are many studies on disentangling the responses of autotrophic(AR)and heterotrophic(HR)respiration components of soil respiration(SR)to long-term drought,but few studies have focused on the mechanisms underlying its responses.Methods:To explore the impact of prolonged drought on AR and HR,we conducted the 2-year measurements on soil CO_(2) effluxes in the 7th and 8th year of manipulated throughfall reduction(TFR)in a warm-temperate oak forest.Results:Our results showed long-term TFR decreased HR,which was positively related to bacterial richness.More importantly,some bacterial taxa such as Novosphingobium and norank Acidimicrobiia,and fungal Leptobacillium were identified as major drivers of HR.In contrast,long-term TFR increased AR due to the increased fine root biomass and production.The increased AR accompanied by decreased HR appeared to counteract each other,and subsequently resulted in the unchanged SR under the TFR.Conclusions:Our study shows that HR and AR respond in the opposite directions to long-term TFR.Soil microorganisms and fine roots account for the respective mechanisms underlying the divergent responses of HR and AR to long-term TFR.This highlights the contrasting responses of AR and HR to prolonged drought should be taken into account when predicting soil CO_(2) effluxes under future droughts. | Jinglei Zhang Shirong Liu Cuiju Liu Hui Wang Junwei Luan Xiaojing Liu Xinwei Guoand Baoliang Niu | 2021 | Forest Ecosystems2021,8,3: | 1 |

| 14 | Effects of p38 MAPK inhibitor on the rat pain behavior and proinflammatory cytokines in a metastatic bone cancer pain model显示文摘Objective:To observe the effects of p38 mitogen activated protein kinase(MAPK) inhibitor SB203580 by intra-thecal injection on the pain behavior and the spinal proinflammatory cytokines in a rat model of bone cancer pain induced by breast cancer cells. Methods:Eleven rats were used to establish the models of bone cancer pain,six rats were treated by intrathecal SB203580 injection,and the other 5 were as the controls. The paw withdrawal latency(PWL),histology and the spinal levels of IL-1β and TNF-α were detected. Results:All the 11 rats presented evident bone destruction and thermal hyperalgesia after intra-tibial injection of breast cancer cells. No effect of SB203580 on the bone destruction was observed. However,following intrathecal injection of SB203580,the left PWLs(12.12 ± 1.26 s at 16 days and 12.99 ± 1.65 s at 19 days) were significant higher than that of controls(9.05 ± 1.08 s at 16 days and 8.55 ± 1.60 s at 19 days),P < 0.05. Meanwhile,intrathecal injection of SB203580 evidently reduced the levels of spinal IL-1β and TNF-α. | 16 | Multi-year throughfall reduction enhanced the growth and non-structural carbohydrate storage of roots at the expenses of above-ground growth in a warm-temperate natural oak forest显示文摘The more frequent occurrence and severer drought events resulting from climate change are increasingly affecting the physiological performance of trees and ecosystem carbon sequestration in many regions of the world.However,our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the responses and adaption of forest trees to prolonged and multi-year drought is still limited.To address this problem,we conducted a long-term manipulative throughfall reduction(TFR,reduction of natural throughfall by 50%–70%during growing seasons)experiment in a natural oriental white oak(Quercus aliena var.acuteserrata Maxim.)forest under warm-temperate climate.After seven years of continuous TFR treatment,the aboveground growth in Q.aliena var.acuteserrata started to decline.Compared with the control plots,trees in the TFR treatment significantly reduced growth increments of stems(14.2%)and leaf area index(6.8%).The rate of net photosynthesis appeared to be more susceptible to changes in soil water in trees subjected to the TFR than in the control.The TFR-treated trees allocated significantly more photosynthates to belowground,leading to enhanced growth and nonstructural carbohydrates(NSC)storage in roots.The 7-year continuous TFR treatment increased the biomass,the production and the NSC concentration in the fine roots by 53.6%,153.6%and 9.6%,respectively.There were clear trade-offs between the aboveground growth and the fine root biomass and NSC storage in Q.aliena var.acuteserrata trees in response to the multi-year TFR treatment.A negative correlation between the fine root NSC concentration and soil water suggested a strategy of preferential C storage over growth when soil water became deficient;the stored NSC during water limitation would then help promote root growth when drought stress is released.Our findings demonstrate the warm-temperate oak forest adopted a more conservative NSC use strategy in response to long-term drought stress,with enhanced root growth and NSC storage at the expenses of above-ground growth to mitigate climate changeinduced drought. | Cuiju Liu Zhicheng Chen Shirong Liu Kunfang Cao Baoliang Niu Xiaojing Liu Xiaomin Gao | 2023 | Forest Ecosystems2023,10,3: | 0 |
