Assessment of heavy metal enrichment and its human impact in lacustrine sediments from four lakes in the mid-low reaches of the Yangtze River, China显示文摘Sediments from four lakes in the mid-low reaches of the Yangtze River, Taibai Lake, Longgan Lake, Chaohu Lake and Xijiu Lake, were chosen to evaluate their enrichment state and history. The state of heavy metal enrichment was at a low level in the sediment of Taibai Lake and Longgan Lake. The enrichment state of Co, Cr and Ni was also low in the sediment of Chaohu Lake and Xijiu Lake, while Cu, Pb and Zn enrichment reached a higher level. Mass accumulation fluxes were calculated to quantitatively evaluate the anthropogenic contribution to heavy metals in the sediment. The anthropogenic accumulation fluxes were lower in the sediment of Taibai Lake and Longgan Lake compared with the other two lakes, where heavy metals, especially Cu, Pb and Zn, were mainly from anthropogenic sources. Heavy metal accumulation did not vary greatly in the sediment of Taibai Lake and Longgan Lake, while that in Chaohu Lake and Xijiu Lake increased since the 1950s and substantially increased since the 1980s, although a decrease occurred since 2000 AD in Xijiu Lake. Heavy metal enrichment was strongly related to human activities in the catchment. The development of urbanization and industrialization was much more rapid in the catchments of Chaohu Lake and Xijiu Lake than of the other two lakes, and thus large amounts of anthropogenically sourced heavy metals were discharged into the lakes, which resulted in a higher contamination risk. However, human activities in the Longgan Lake and Taibai Lake catchments mainly involved agriculture, which contributed a relatively small portion of heavy metals to the lakes.Haijian Bing Yanhong Wu Enfeng Liu Xiangdong Yang 2013Journal of Environmental Sciences2013,25,7:14
Variation characteristics of heavy metals and nutrients in the core sediments of Taihu Lake and their pollution history显示文摘The sedimentary environment change, trophic evolution and heavy metals pollution history of the northern Taihu Lake in the last 100 years are studied according to the sedimentary geochemical proxies of the core sediments, such as grain size, nutrients, heavy metals, diatom, etc. The nutrients in the sediments depended mainly on the lake internal circulation and the heavy metals were from natural geogenic sources before the 1920s, which were not influenced by human activities generally, and grain size was one of the key factors influencing heavy metals content in the sediments. The alternation of manner and strength of human activities in Taihu Lake catchment before and after the 1920s made the lake sediments coarser, and hence heavy metals and TP content decreased contrasted with that before the 1920s. TP content in sediments and water increased from the 1950s to late 1970s due to anthropogenic pollutants discharge, and the lake belonging to mesotrophic state.TN and TOC content and C/N ratio increased due to the increasing external pollutants into Taihu Lake by human activities, TP content also increased obviously in water and sediments, and the diatom association was dominated by eutrophic species since the late 1970s, indicating the eutrophication state of Taihu Lake in this period. Meanwhile the increasing in heavy metals content, such as Cu, Mn,Ni, Pb and Zn, and their proportion of valid fractions in the sediments indicates that they all result from human pollutants since the late 1970s. The heavy metals in the surface sediments have certain potential biological toxicity due to the higher SEM/AVS ratio.LIU Enfeng SHEN Ji LIU Xingqi ZHU Yuxin WANG Sumin 2006Science China Earth Sciences2006,49,z1:11
The enrichment characteristics of mercury in the sediments of Dongjiu and Xijiu, Taihu Lake catchment, in the past century显示文摘The concentration and the enrichment factors of mercury (Hg) in the sediment cores of Dongjiu and Xijiu, Taihu Lake catchment, were studied. The accumulation fluxes, anthropogenic input concentration and anthropogenic accumulation fluxes of Hg in recent 100 years were also analyzed based on the 210Pb dating. The results indicate that the increasing concentrations of Hg in the sediments are influ-enced by natural factors and anthropogenic input simultaneously. Generally, about 2/3 of the Hg in the sediment was from anthropogenic sources. In the early 20th century, the anthropogenic input was owing to the urban development and fossil fuel consumptions surrounding the Taihu Lake and the worldwide atmospheric deposition of Hg since the industrial revolution. The concentration and an-thropogenic fluxes of Hg increased with the industrial development in the catchment since the 1930s. It reached the maximum during the middle 1970s and middle 1990s, and decreased since the middle 1990s with constraints on high pollution industries.WU YanHong JIANG XueZhong LIU EnFeng YAO ShuChun ZHU YuXin SUN ZhaoBin 2008Science China Earth Sciences2008,51,6:8
Historical trophic evolutions and their ecological responses from shallow lakes in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River: Case studies on Longgan Lake and Taibai Lake显示文摘The evolutions of diatom floras and the total phosphorous (TP) concentrations in the historical period were reconstructed for two lakes, Longgan and Taibai in the middle Yangtze River, based on high resolutional fossil diatom study from two sediment cores and an established regional diatom-TP transfer function. The TP concentration in Longgan Lake changed slightly in the range of 36-62 μg/L and kept its middle trophic level in the past 200 years. The changes of diatom assemblages reflect a macrophyte-dominated history of the lake. During the nineteenth century, the lake TP concentration increased comparatively, corresponding to the increase in abundance of benthic diatoms. The progressive increase of epiphytic diatoms since the onset of the twentieth century indicates the development of aquatic plants, coinciding with the twice drops of water TP level. The TP concentration in Taibai Lake kept a stable status about 50 μg/L before 1953 AD, while diatoms dominated by facultative planktonic Aulacoseira granulata shifted quickly to epiphytic diatom species, indicating a rapid expansion of aquatic vegetation. During 1953-1970 AD, the coverage of aquatic plants decreased greatly inferred by the low abundance of epiphytic diatoms as well as declined planktonic types, and the reconstructed TP concentration shows an obvious rising trend firstly, suggesting the beginning of the lake eutrophication. The lake was in the eutrophic condition after 1970, coinciding with the successive increase of planktonic diatoms. The comparison of the two lakes suggests the internal adjustment and purification function of aquatic plants for nutrients in water. The discrepancy of TP trends in the two lakes after 1960 reflects two different patterns of lake environmental response to human disturbance. Sediments in Taibai Lake clearly recorded the process of lake ecological transformation from the macrophyte-dominated stage to the algae-dominated stage. The limits of TP concentration (68-118 μg/L) in the transitional state can be considered as the critical value between the two stable ecosystems. Further work will be necessary to provide more evidence from the sediments in more eutrophic lakes for the primary inference. The reconstructive TP level and the inference of aquatic plants from fossil diatoms in different lakes, as well as their comparison provide a scientific basis for ecological restoration of eutrophic lakes in research regions.YANG Xiangdong SHEN Ji DONG Xuhui LIU Enfeng WANG Sumin 2006Science China Earth Sciences2006,49,z1:8
One century sedimentary record of lead and zinc pollution in Yangzong Lake, a highland lake in southwestern China显示文摘Reconstruction of trace metal pollution histories and sources may help us to regulate current pollutant discharge. This is especially important for the highland lakes in southwestern China, which are facing trace metals pollution. We present sedimentary records of 11 metals accumulated in Yangzong Lake since the 1870's, a highland lake in southwestern China. Pollution of lead and zinc (Pb and Zn) was differentiated based on principal component analysis, geochemical normalization, and lead isotope ratios. Nearly all the metals as well as grain size composition show generally constant values before the mid-1980's, denoting stable detrital input in the catchment. Fluctuations in the concentrations of the metals as well as grain size composition since the mid-1980's indicate an increase in soil erosion with strengthened human disturbance in the catchment. After geochemical normalization, Pb and Zn showed constant values before 1990 AD and then a gradual increase in parallel with the variations in 208Pb/206Pb and 207Pb/206Pb ratios, indicating that Pb and Zn pollution occurred. Combining the data of 208Pb/206Pb and 207Pb/206Pb ratios in the sediments of Yangzong Lake, leaded gasoline, Pb-Zn ore and coal, and consumption or production historical trends, we deduced that the enhanced Pb and Zn pollution in Yangzong Lake is caused primarily by ore mining and refining.Enlou Zhang Enfeng Liu Ji Shen Yanmin Cao Yanling Li 2012Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,7:7
Geochronology of recent lake sediments from Longgan Lake, middle reach of the Yangtze River, influenced by disturbance of human activities显示文摘The impacts of human activities in Longgan Lake region on the distribution of 210Pb in lake sediment made it difficult to establish geochronological sequence. However, environmental proxies recorded these human activities and could be used as time marker to check 210Pb dating results. Based on the analysis of 210Pbexc distribution in cores LS-1 and LGL-1, and in combination with the human activities records in grain-size and element concentration, the sedimentation rates in the upper layers of these two cores were determined to be 0.19 and 0.23 cm/a respectively. The MAR (mass accumulation rates) of these two cores demonstrated that natural condition, such as precipitation and runoffs, led to the variation of MAR before human disturbance, and human activities controlled the sedimentary processes afterwards, which obviously reduced the particles influx into the lakes. During 1940s when human activity had not changed the water system within the catchment, 210Pb activity was abnormally strong in lakes along middle to lower reaches of the Yangtze River, which might be attributed to less precipitation and can be used as a time marker for geochronological research.WU YanHong LIU EnFeng BING HaiJian YANG XiangDong XUE Bin XIA WeiLan 2010Science China Earth Sciences2010,53,8:4

Spatial distribution and stratigraphic characteristics of surface sediments in Taihu Lake,China显示文摘A geophysical survey was carried out for Taihu Lake, one of the largest shallow lakes in China. The StrataBox Marine Geophysical Instrument was applied for the first time to obtain high-resolution seismic data (in the form of vectorgraphs) of the lake sediment.Data were then interpreted by SonarWiz.Map acoustics software.Data were correlated with core stratigraphy from the lake as well as an outcrop on the northern side of the lake at Yao Bay.Results show that the upper 10 m sediment (beneath the interface of the sediment and the overlying lake water) is characterized by laminated sediments, which can be classified into two stratal types,i.e.lacustrine sediment stratum (U1) and underlying hard loess stratum (U2).The contact of these two lithologies is not continuous, and part of it is absent in the lake basin.Unequally spread over the lake basin, the lacustrine sediment (mainly consisting of sludge and muddy-clay) is found in areas along the western bank,to the northwest of the Xishan Mountains and along the northwestern side of the lake.In the rest of the lake basin, the hard loess stratum is exposed in outcrops. The depth of the lacustrine sediment ranges from 1 to 2 m,while the depth of the sludge (closely related to the modern lacustrine environment) varies from 0.03 to 1.0 m.The spatial distribution of lacustrine sediments in Taihu Lake is primarily influenced by transportation and sedimentation of riverine materials,as well as the hydrodynamics of lake currents.SHEN Ji YUAN HeZhong LIU EnFeng WANG JianJun WANG Yong 2011Chinese Science Bulletin2011,56,2:3
Sand mining impact on Poyang Lake: a case study based on high-resolution bathymetry and sub-bottom data显示文摘Poyang Lake in the Changjiang(Yangtze)River catchment has undergone frequent spring drought since 2003,and some researchers attributed this phenomenon to sand mining and the lakebed deformation in the outlet channel linking the lake with Changjiang River main channel. However, there is still a lack of high-resolution subaqueous geomorphological evidence of how sand mining led to lakebed deformation in the outlet channel. We examined the bed morphology and sub-bottom sedimentary structure of the outlet channel, using a multibeam echo sounder and sub-bottom profi ler in Poyang Lake.We found that:(1)the subaqueous micro-topography types of the outlet channel are characterized by sand mining disturbance, natural erosional topography, and fl at bed and dunes, accounting for 44.9%,21.4%,28.6%,and 5.1%of the channel area,respectively;and(2)sand mining activity aff ects the local bed topography extensively and signifi cantly. The depth of sandpits caused by sand mining varied from 1.4 m to 12 m deeper than the surrounding bed surface, with 4.41 m of depth increase on average.Hence, the large-scale high-intensity sand mining activities and their signifi cant geomorphic eff ects demand for an improved assessment for future management and longer-term sustainability.Because of the large-scale and ongoing high-intensity sand mining activities in the Poyang Lake outlet channel, these eff ects should raise caution in the future and contribute to monitoring eff orts that are essential to implement sustainable management solutions. The present study and techniques implemented can serve as a scientifi c reference for dam construction and sand mining within the Poyang Lake basin.Shuwei ZHENG Heqin CHENG Ming TANG Wei XU Enfeng LIU Shu GAO Jim BEST Yuehua JIANG Quanping ZHOU 2022Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2022,40,4:3
Spatially Different Nutrient Histories Recorded by Multiple Cores and Implications for Management in Taihu Lake, Eastern China显示文摘The Taihu Lake,a large shallow lake in the floodplain of the Changjiang(Yangtze) River in the eastern China,is faced with challenging ecological problems resulting from eutrophication, which has affected the regional freshwater supply of a large population.Although efforts have been made to assess the nutrient evolution histories in the northern bays, little is known regarding nutrient histories in different parts across the entire lake basin. In this paper,we present nutrient histories for different parts of the lake based on chironomid transfer functions applied to four short cores obtained from the northern, western and eastern regions of the lake. The chironomid-inferred total phosphorus(CI-TP) concentrations were compared with the phosphorus concentrations obtained by using instrumental and sedimentary data. The results suggest that trophic evolution histories were asynchronous throughout the lake during the past decades in response to different ecological regimes controlled by the nutrient input, wind direction and shoreline topography. The restoration of aquatic plants may be an effective option for the management of lake rehabilitation to ′natural′ conditions.Given the multiple factors controlling the biotic communities in such a large and complex lake, combined analyses among the multi-proxies encountered in the sediments are necessary for comprehensive insight into paleolimnological studies. The spatial heterogeneity in the ecological trajectories within this complicated ecosystem suggests that different management practices should be undertaken for specific lake zones in the Taihu Lake.CAO Yanmin ZHANG Enlou Peter LANGDON LIU Enfeng SHEN Ji 2013Chinese Geographical Science2013,23,5:2
Phosphorus removal from sediments by Potamogeton crispus:New high-resolution in-situ evidence for rhizosphere assimilation and oxidization-induced retention显示文摘Macrophytes are usually chosen for phytoremediation tools to remove P in eutrophic aquatic ecosystems, but the lack of test methods hinders the understanding of removal mechanism and application. In this study,we used the novel technologies combined of Diffusive gradients in thin films(DGT),Planar optode(PO),and Non-invasive micro-test technology(NMT)to explore P dynamics in water-sediment continuum and rhizosphere of Potamogeton crispus over time. Results of the high-resolution in situ measurement showed that labile P(LPDGT)fluxes at the surficial sediment significantly decreased from approximate 120,140,and 200 pg/(cm^(2)·sec)via 30 days incubation period to 17,40,and 56 pg/(cm2•sec)via that of 15 days.Obvious synchronous increase of LPDGT was not detected in overlying water, suggesting the intense assimilation of dissolve reactive P via root over time.PO measurement indicated that O_(2)concentration around the rhizosphere remarkably increased and radially diffused into deeper sediment until 100%saturation along with the root stretch downwards.NMT detection of roots showed the obvious O_(2)inflow into root tissue with the uppermost flux of 30 pmol/(cm2•sec)from surroundings via aerenchyma on different treatment conditions.Different from previous reports, gradually saturating O_(2)concentrations around the rhizosphere was principally driven by O_(2)penetration through interspace attributing to root stretch downward rather than root O_(2)leakage.Increased O_(2)concentrations in deep sediment over time finally induced the oxidization of labile Fe(II)into Fe(III)bound P and local P immobilization.Hezhong Yuan Yiwei Cai Zhen Yang Qiang Li Enfeng Liu Hongbin Yin 2021Journal of Environmental Sciences2021,33,11:2

How do inundation provoke the release of phosphorus in soil-originated sediment due to nitrogen reduction after reclaiming lake from polder显示文摘Different N and P fractions inmicrocosm incubation experiment was measured using highresolution in-situ Peeper and DGT techniques combining with sequential extraction procedure. The results showed the synchronous desorption and release of PO_(4)^(3-),S^(2-)and Fe^(2+)from the solid soil-originated sediment. This trend indicated that the significant reduction of Fe-P and SO_(4)^(2-) occurred in the pore water during the inundation. The concentrations of PO_(4)^(3-) in the overlying water and pore water increased to more than 0.1 and 0.2 mg/L at the beginning of the incubation experiment.Decreased NO_(3)^(-) concentrations from more than 1.5 mg/L to less than 0.5 mg/L combining with increasing NH^(4+) concentrations from less than 1mg/L tomore than 5 mg/L suggested the remarkable NO_(3)-reduction via dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia(DNRA)pathway over time.High NH^(4+) concentrations in the pore water aggravated the release of Fe^(2+) through reduction of Fe(Ⅲ)-P as electric acceptors under anaerobic conditions. This process further stimulated the remarkable releasing of labile PO_(4)^(3-) from the solid phase to the solution and potential diffusion into overlying water.Additionally, high S^(2-) concentration at deeper layer indicated the reduction and releasing of S^(2-)from oxidation states, which can stimulated the NO_(3)^(-)reduction and the accumulation of NH^(4+)in the pore water. This process can also provoke the reduction of Fe-P as electric acceptors following the release of labile PO_(4)^(3-)into pore water.Generally, inundation potentially facilitate the desorption of labile P and attention should be paid during the reclaiming lake from polder.Hezhong Yuan Bingchan Jia JuanWu Haixiang Wang Jianghua Yu Yiwei Cai Enfeng Liu Qiang Li Qingfei Zeng 2022Journal of Environmental Sciences2022,34,8:1
