Leaf surface factors of transgenic Bt cotton associated with the feeding behaviors of cotton aphids:A case study on non-target effects显示文摘The present paper reports case study results of the risk assessment of transgenic Bt cotton on a non-target pest, cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii. Several types of techniques, i.e., electrical penetration graph (EPG), light and electron microscopy, bioassays and chemical analysis, were applied to investigate physical and chemical leaf factors of 2 transgenic Bt cotton lines (GK12 and GK19) and their pa-rental non-Bt cotton line (Simian3) associated with searching and feeding behaviors of cotton aphids on leaves or leaf extracts of cotton plants. EPG results showed that there were some differences among behaviors of cotton aphids on 2 Bt cotton and 1 non-Bt cotton lines. Cotton aphids performed similarly to leaf surface extracts from 3 cotton lines; and leaf surface chemicals, mainly volatiles and waxes, were almost identical in the components and concentrations among the cotton lines. However, three cotton lines were quite different from each other in the densities of certain kinds of covering trichomes. Therefore, the relationships between the physical characteristics and the searching behaviors of cotton aphids on the three cotton lines were constructed as the regression equations. Glandular trichomes and covering trichomes with 5 branches influenced the cotton aphids' searching behaviors effectively; and other trichomes with other branches affected aphids in varying ways. These results demonstrated that leaf surface physical factors of transgenic Bt cotton lines different from their parental non-Bt line could affect the penetration behaviors of non-target cotton aphids. Cotton aphids penetrate and feed more easily on two Bt cotton lines than on the non-Bt cotton line. | XUE Kun, DENG Su, WANG RongJiang, YAN FengMing, XU ChongRen College of Life Sciences, Peking University, Beijing 100871, China | 2008 | Science China(Life Sciences)2008,51,2: | 8
Functions and clinical significance of mechanical tumor microenvironment:cancer cell sensing, mechanobiology and metastasis显示文摘Dynamic and heterogeneous interaction between tumor cells and the surrounding microenvironment fuels the occurrence, progression, invasion, and metastasis of solid tumors. In this process, the tumormicroenvironment(TME)fractures cellular and matrix architecture normality through biochemical and mechanical means, abetting tumorigenesis and treatment resistance.Tumor cells sense and respond to the strength, direction, and duration of mechanical cues in the TME by various mechanotransduction pathways. However, far less understood is the comprehensive perspective of the functions and mechanisms of mechanotransduction.Due to the great therapeutic difficulties brought by the mechanical changes in the TME,emerging studies have focused on targeting the adverse mechanical factors in the TME to attenuate disease rather than conventionally targeting tumor cells themselves, which has been proven to be a potential therapeutic approach. In this review,we discussed the origins and roles ofmechanical factors in the TME,cell sensing,mechano-biological coupling and signal transduction,in vitro construction of the tumormechanicalmicroenvironment, applications and clinical significance in the TME. | Hanying Zhou Meng Wang Yixi Zhang Qingqing Su Zhengxin Xie Xiangyan Chen Ran Yan Ping Li Tingting Li Xiang Qin Hong Yang ChunhuiWu Fengming You Shun Li Yiyao Liu | 2022 | Cancer Communications2022,42,5: | 3

Therapeutic Effect and Mechanism of Caulophyllum robustum Maxim Extract on Adjuvant Arthritis Rats显示文摘[Objectives]To study the anti-inflammation and anti-swelling effect of Caulophyllum robustum Maxim( CRM) extract on secondary lesions of adjuvant arthritis( AA),associated inflammatory factors of AA rats and mice immune function. [Methods]Rats were divided into high, middle and low dose CRM extract groups( 69. 23,34. 61,17. 31 mg/kg),methotrexate group( 0. 68 mg/kg),triptolide group( 7. 88 mg/kg),model group and normal control group. The AA rat model was induced by intradermal injection of Freund's complete adjuvant( FCA). After the AA model was established successfully, the paw swelling of AA rats was observed and recorded. The levels of interleukin-1β( IL-1β),interleukin-4( IL-4),interleukin-10( IL-10),Tumor Necrosis Factor-α( TNF-α),interleukin 17( IL-17),interferon( IFN-γ),granulocyte colony-stimulating factor( G-CSF) and transforming growth factor( TGF-β) in the serum of AA rats were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay( ELISA). The spleen was removed and weighed for detecting the drug influence on the immune organs.Impacts were observed by gavage administration at different dosages of 25 mg/kg,50 mg/kg,100 mg/kg for seven days, adopting carbon granules clearance test,delayed-type hypersensitivity induced by dinitrofluorobenzene( DNFB) coupled with flow cytometry evaluating lymphocytes( CD3^+,CD4^+,CD8^+) activation and serolysin test. [Results] Compared with the model group, the joint swelling, spleen index and inflammatory cytokines( IL-1β,IL-4,IL-10,TNF-α,IL-17,IFN-γ,G-CSF,TGF-β) were reduced significantly( P < 0. 05,P < 0. 01). And the activity of CRM was significantly superior to methotrexate and triptergium. Moreover, the results indicated that different dosages of 25 mg/kg,50 mg/kg,100 mg/kg of CRM could significantly reduce the carbon granules clearance index( K) and phagocytic index( a),inhibit the phagocytosis of mononuclear macrophages, reduce the mice swelling extent and inhibit DTH in mice induced by DNFB,decrease the quantity of serum hemolysin. Percentage of CD3^+,CD4^+,and the ratio of CD4^+,CD8^+ notably decreased, whereas CD8^+ obviously increased. Intragastrica dose of 50 mg/kg,100 mg/kg were acknowledged as more objective inhibiting effect compared with a dosage of 25 mg/kg.[Conclusions] Decreasing inflammatory cytokines content,non-specific immune, humoral immune and cellular immune function may be the therapeutic mechanism for rheumatoid arthritis( RA). | Shaowa LU Hong SU Fengming YU Qiushi WANG Yuyan GUO Guoyu LI Haixue KUANG | 2018 | Medicinal Plant2018,9,1: | 1

Carbonization fabrication of a piezoresistive sensor with improved sensitivity via Ni decoration of carbonized cotton fibers显示文摘The development of wearable electronics urgently requires the cost-effective and scalable fabrication of high-performance pressure sensors. This work aims to develop a simple carbonization strategy to facilitate sensor sensitivity by decorating discrete nickel nanoparticles on carbonized cotton fibers(CCFs).The increased air gap between the fibers at the unloading state,as well as the enlargement of the deformation distance and the contact area between the conductive materials at the loading state, contribute to a more significant resistance change. Therefore, the sensitivity of the piezoresistive sensor is improved more than 5 times within 1 N by introducing Ni nanoparticles, and it is characterized by a rapid response(~160 ms)and recovery(~100 ms),wide detection range(~20 N/~130 kPa),and good durability(~4000 cycles). The flexible sensor has been successfully demonstrated to monitor human movements, physical stimuli, and pressure distribution.Furthermore, the proposed device can control temperature accurately as a uniform and large-scale heater. This work reveals that the Ni@CCFs-based sensor is prospective in wearable electronics, artificial intelligence, health monitoring, medical diagnosis and treatment. | HE Xiang WANG FengMing LIANG YiYing WU JiaWei LIANG JiongHong SHEN GengZhe LI BaiJun SU DaoJian ZHANG Chi SONG WeiDong HE Xin | 2022 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2022,65,12: | 0
Highly stable capacitive tactile sensors with tunable sensitivity facilitated by electrostatic interaction of layered double hydroxide,MXene, and Ag NWs显示文摘A capacitive tactile sensor(CTS)has been developed by assembling a double-sided patterned dielectric layer and novel electrodes. The patterned aluminium foil-supported electrode comprises zinc-aluminium layered double hydroxides(Zn AlLDH),MXene, and Ag NWs via electrostatic interaction. This flexible device enables greater structural deformation, thereby enhancing sensitivity to a wide range of pressure. The sensitivity of the CTS can be customized to meet specific requirements by matching the microstructured electrodes with the patterned dielectric layer. An optimized sensor exhibits a sensitivity of 2.752 kPa^(–1)within 30 kPa,a response time of approximately 100 ms,and a wide detection range of 0–300 kPa.The strong physical interaction among the electrode materials ensures a reliable conductive network, ensuring the long-term stability of the sensor, even after 7500 loading and unloading cycles.Furthermore, the fabricated CTS device presents a promising prospect for the integration into wearable electronics, with the ability to effectively respond to both human activities and external physical stimuli. | SHEN GengZhe HUANG WeiQing LI HaiFeng WANG FengMing SU DaoJian LI BaiJun ZHANG BoLun LIANG Ping ZHANG Chi XIN Yue HE Xin | 2023 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2023,66,11: | 0
