| 1 | Effects of combined drip irrigation and sub-surface pipe drainage on water and salt transport of saline-alkali soil in Xinjiang, China显示文摘Developing effective irrigation and drainage strategies to improve the quality of saline-alkali soil is vital for enhancing agricultural production and increasing economic returns. In this study, we explored how irrigation and drainage modes (flood irrigation, drip irrigation, and sub-surface pipe drainage under drip irrigation) improve the saline-alkali soil in Xinjiang, China. We aimed to study the transport characteristics of soil water and salt under different irrigation and drainage modes, and analyze the effects of the combination of irrigation and drainage on soil salt leaching, as well as its impacts on the growth of oil sunflower. Our results show that sub-surface pipe drainage under drip irrigation significantly reduced the soil salt content and soil water content at the 0–200 cm soil depth. Under sub-surface pipe drainage combined with drip irrigation, the mean soil salt content was reduced to below 10 g/kg after the second irrigation, and the soil salt content decreased as sub-surface pipe distance decreased. The mean soil salt content of flood irrigation exceeded 25 g/kg, and the mean soil desalination efficiency was 3.28%, which was lower than that of drip irrigation. The mean soil desalination rate under drip irrigation and sub-surface pipe drainage under drip irrigation was 19.30% and 58.12%, respectively. | 3 | Multi-scale strength analysis of bolted connections used in integral thermal protection system显示文摘Efficient and accurate strength analysis of bolted connections is essential in analyzing the integral thermal protection system(ITPS) of hypersonic vehicles, since the system bears severe loads and structural failures usually occur at the connections. Investigations of composite mechanical properties used in ITPS are still in progress as the architecture of the composites is complex. A new method is proposed in this paper for strength analysis of bolted connections by investigating the elastic behavior and failure strength of three-dimensional C/C orthogonal composites used in ITPS. In this method a multi-scale finite element method incorporating the global–local method is established to ensure high efficiency in macro-scale and precision in meso-scale in analysis.Simulation results reveal that predictions of material properties show reasonable accuracy compared with test results. | 5 | EFFECTS OF GLUCAGON ON ISLET β CELL FUNCTION IN PATIENTS WITH DIABETES MELLITUS显示文摘Objective To evaluate islet β cell response to intravenous glucagon(a non-glucose secretagogue)stimulation in diabetes mellitus.Methods Nineteen patients with type 1 diabetes(T1D)and 131 patients with type 2 diabetes(T2D)were recruited in this study.T2D patients were divided into two groups according to therapy:36 cases treated with insulin and 95 cases treated with diet or oral therapy.The serum C-peptide levels were determined at fasting and six minutes after intravenous injection of 1 mg of glucagon.Results Both fasting and 6-minute post-glucagon-stimulated C-peptide levels in T1D patients were significantly lower than those of T2D patients(0.76±0.36 ng/mL vs.1.81±0.78 ng/mL,P<0.05;0.88±0.42 ng/mL vs.3.68±0.98 ng/mL,P<0.05).In T1D patients,the C-peptide level after injection of glucagon was similar to the fasting level.In T2D,patients treated with diet or oral drug had a significantly greater fasting and stimulated C-peptide level than those patients received insulin therapy(2.45±0.93 ng/mL vs.1.61±0.68 ng/mL,P<0.05;5.26±1.24 ng/mL vs.2.15±0.76 ng/mL,P<0.05).The serum C-peptide level after glucagon stimulation was positively correlated with C-peptide levels at fasting in all three groups(r=0.76,P<0.05).Conclusions The 6-minute glucagon test is valuable in assessing the function of islet β cell in patients with diabetes mellitus.It is helpful for diagnosis and treatment of diabetes mellitus. | Tong Wang Xin-hua Xiao Wen-hui Li Heng Wang Qi Sun Tao Yuan Guo-hua Yang | 2008 | Chinese Medical Sciences Journal2008,23,2: | 5 |
| 6 | Heteroplasmy Level of the Mitochondrial tRNA^(Leu(UUR)) A3243G Mutation in a Chinese Family Is Positively Associated with Earlier Age-of-onset and Increasing Severity of Diabetes显示文摘Objective To investigate the mutations of mitochondrial genome in a pedigree with suspected maternally inherited diabetes and deafness and to explore the correlations between the mutations and clinical features. Methods Genomic DNA was isolated from blood leucocytes of each member of the pedigree. The mitochondrial genome was amplified with 24-pair primers that could cover the entire mitochondrial DNA. Direct sequencing of PCR products was used to identify any mitochondrial DNA mutations. Results Family members on the maternal side all harbored the tRNA^(Leu(UUR)) A3243G mutation. The paternal side family members did not have the mutation. The age-of-onset of diabetes of the 4 maternal side family members was 15, 41, 44, and 65 years old, and their corresponding heteroplasmy level of the mutation was 34.5%, 14.9%, 14.6%, and 5.9%, respectively. The age-of-onset of diabetes and heteroplasmy level of A3243G mutation were negatively correlated with a correlation coefficient of -0.980 (P=0.02). Meanwhile, patient with high heteroplasmy level of A3243G mutation had relatively low severity of disease. Moreover, 6 reported polymorphisms and 2 new variants were found. Conclusions The main cause of diabetes in this pedigree is the tRNA^(Leu(UUR)) A3243G mutation. However, other gene variants may contribute to its pathogenicity. | 7 | Curcumin inhibits the replication of enterovirus 71 in vitro显示文摘Human enterovirus 71(EV71)is the main causative pathogen of hand,foot,and mouth disease(HFMD)in children.The epidemic of HFMD has been a public health problem in Asia-Pacific region for decades,and no vaccine and effective antiviral medicine are available.Curcumin has been used as a traditional medicine for centuries to treat a diversity of disorders including viral infections.In this study,we demonstrated that curcumin showed potent antiviral effect again EV71.In Vero cells infected with EV71,the addition of curcumin significantly suppressed the synthesis of viral RNA,the expression of viral protein,and the overall production of viral progeny.Similar with the previous reports,curcumin reduced the production of ROS induced by viral infection.However,the antioxidant property of curcumin did not contribute to its antiviral activity,since N-acetyl-L-cysteine,the potent antioxidant failed to suppress viral replication.This study also showed that extracellular signal-regulated kinase(ERK)was activated by either viral infection or curcumin treatment,but the activated ERK did not interfere with the antiviral effect of curcumin,indicating ERK is not involved in the antiviral mechanism of curcumin.Unlike the previous reports that curcumin inhibited protein degradation through ubiquitin–proteasome system(UPS),we found that curcumin had no impact on UPS in control cells.However,curcumin did reduce the activity of proteasomes which was increased by viral infection.In addition,the accumulation of the short-lived proteins,p53 and p21,was increased by the treatment of curcumin in EV71-infected cells.We further probed the antiviral mechanism of curcumin by examining the expression of GBF1 and PI4KB,both of which are required for the formation of viral replication complex.We found that curcumin significantly reduced the level of both proteins.Moreover,the decreased expression of either GBF1 or PI4KB by the application of siRNAs was sufficient to suppress viral replication.We also demonstrated that curcumin showed anti-apoptotic activity at the early stage of viral infection.The results of this study provide solid evidence that curcumin has potent anti-EV71 activity.Whether or not the down-regulated GBF1 and PI4KB by curcumin contribute to its antiviral effect needs further studies. | Ying Qin Lexun Lin Yang Chen Shuo Wu Xiaoning Si Heng Wu Xia Zhai Yan Wang Lei Tong Bo Pan Xiaoyan Zhong Tianying Wang Wenran Zhao Zhaohua Zhong | 2014 | Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2014,4,4: | 5 |
| 8 | Phthalonitrile Resins Derived from Vanillin: Synthesis, Curing Behavior, and Thermal Properties显示文摘Vanillin was used as sustainable source for phthalonitrile monomer synthesis, and allyl/propargyl ether moieties were introduced to improve the processability at the minimal cost of thermal properties. The synthesis route was optimized to minimize side-reactions and simplify post-processing, and the monomers were obtained in high purity and good yields. The curing behavior, mechanism, and processability of the monomers were studied, and the thermal properties of cured polymers were evaluated. Of the two monomers, the allyl ether-containing one exhibited a wide processing window of 185 °C, and was mainly cured into phthalocyanine and linear aliphatic structures through self-catalytic curing process. Also, the glass transition temperature was higher than 500 °C. In contrast, the propargyl ether-containing monomer could only be partially cured, and heat resistance was found to be compromised. | 11 | Efficacy of texture analysis of pre-operative magnetic resonance imaging in predicting microvascular invasion in hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘BACKGROUND Presence of microvascular invasion(MVI)indicates poorer prognosis postcurative resection of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),with an increased chance of tumour recurrence.By present standards,MVI can only be diagnosed postoperatively on histopathology.Texture analysis potentially allows identification of patients who are considered‘high risk’through analysis of pre-operative magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)studies.This will allow for better patient selection,improved individualised therapy(such as extended surgical margins or adjuvant therapy)and pre-operative prognostication.AIM This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of texture analysis on pre-operative MRI in predicting MVI in HCC.METHODS Retrospective review of patients with new cases of HCC who underwent hepatectomy between 2007 and 2015 was performed.Exclusion criteria:No preoperative MRI,significant movement artefacts,loss-to-follow-up,ruptured HCCs,previous hepatectomy and adjuvant therapy.Fifty patients were divided into MVI(n=15)and non-MVI(n=35)groups based on tumour histology.Selected images of the tumour on post-contrast-enhanced T1-weighted MRI were analysed.Both qualitative(performed by radiologists)and quantitative data(performed by software)were obtained.Radiomics texture parameters were extracted based on the largest cross-sectional area of each tumor and analysed using MaZda software.Five separate methods were performed.Methods 1,2 and 3 exclusively made use of features derived from arterial,portovenous and equilibrium phases respectively.Methods 4 and 5 made use of the comparatively significant features to attain optimal performance.RESULTS Method 5 achieved the highest accuracy of 87.8%with sensitivity of 73%and specificity of 94%.CONCLUSION Texture analysis of tumours on pre-operative MRI can predict presence of MVI in HCC with accuracies of up to 87.8%and can potentially impact clinical management. | Jordan Zheng Ting Sim Terrence Chi Hong Hui Tong Kuan Chuah Hsien Min Low Cher Heng Tan Vishal GShelat | 2022 | World Journal of Clinical Oncology2022,13,11: | 3 |

| 13 | Enhanced multimodal luminescence and ultrahigh stability Eu^(3+)-doped CsPbBr_(3) glasses for X-ray detection and imaging显示文摘As an emerging scintillation material,metal halide perovskite(CsPbX3)has been deemed the most potentially valuable candidate in X-ray detection and medical imaging.Nevertheless,it is a continuing challenge to implement efficient radioluminescence(RL)with high radiation stability and moisture resistance.Moreover,the optimized luminescence properties and excellent uniformity of CsPbX3 glass are also key points for obtaining perfect X-ray images.Herein,we have successfully precipitated Eu^(3+)-doped CsPbBr_(3)nanocrystals(NCs)with improved photoluminescence quantum yield(≈58.6%)because partial Eu^(3+)entered the perovskite lattice in a robust borosilicate glass matrix by in situ crystallization.The small amount of Eu addition made the lattice of NCs shrink and promoted uniform distribution of CsPbBr_(3)NCs in the glass,which effectively reduced the light scattering of the sample.Subsequently,multimodal RL intensity of the CsPbBr_(3)/CsPbBr_(3):xEu NCs glasses(CPB-0Eu/CPB-xEu)as a function of X-ray dose rate showed a superlinear relationship to the benefit of obtaining satisfactory X-ray images.Also,the outstanding radiation stability and water resistance of CPB-xEu were confirmed due to the protection of the robust glass matrix.Finally,an X-ray imaging system using a CPB-xEu scintillator was constructed,and the spring in the opaque sample was legibly detected under the motivation of X-rays,indicating that CsPbX3 glasses possess extensive application prospects in terms of X-ray detection and medical imaging. | YAO TONG QIN WANG HENG YANG XIAOTING LIU ENROU MEI XIAOJUAN LIANG ZHIJUN ZHANG WEIDONG XIANG | 2021 | Photonics Research2021,9,12: | 2 |

| 15 | Psoralen inhibits hepatitis B viral replication by down-regulating the host transcriptional machinery of viral promoters显示文摘The hepatitis B virus(HBV) is a global public health challenge due to its highly contagious nature. It is estimated that almost 300 million people live with chronic HBV infection annually. Although nucleoside analogs markedly reduce the risk of liver disease progression, the analogs do not fully eradicate the virus. As such, new treatment options and drugs are urgently needed. Psoralen is a nourishing monomer of Chinese herb and is known to inhibit virus replication and inactivate viruses. In this study, we evaluated the potential of psoralen as an anti-HBV agent.Quantitative PCR and Southern blot analysis revealed that psoralen inhibited HBV replication in Hep G2.2.15 cells in a concentration-dependent manner. Moreover, psoralen was also active against the 3TC/ETV-dual-resistant HBV mutant. Further investigations revealed that psoralen suppressed both HBV RNA transcription and core protein expression. The transcription factor FOXO1, a known target for PGC1α co-activation, binds to HBV precore/core promoter enhancer II region and activates HBV RNA transcription. Co-immunoprecipitation showed that psoralen suppressed the expression of FOXO1, thereby decreasing the binding of FOXO1 co-activator PGC1αto the HBV promoter.
