1Distribution,fluxes and decadal changes of nutrients in the Jiulong River Estuary,Southwest Taiwan Strait显示文摘The Jiulong River Estuary (JRE) is a typical subtropical macro-tide estuary on the southwest coast of the Taiwan Strait (TWS),which has been greatly impacted by human activities over the past 30 years.To understand nutrient dynamics and fluxes under such a heavy background of anthropogenic perturbation,eight cruises were conducted from April 2008 to April 2011,covering both wet (May to September) and dry (October to April next year) seasons.Nutrient concentrations were very high for the freshwater end-member in the upper reach of the JRE (nitrate (NO 3-N):120-230 mol L-1 ;nitrite (NO 2-N):5-15 mol L-1 ;ammonium (NH 4-N):15-170 mol L-1 ;soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP):1.2-3.5 mol L-1 ;dissolved silicate (DSi):200-340 mol L-1).In dry seasons,concentrations of these nutrients were higher than in wet seasons.Nitrate was the dominant chemical species of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN),with percentages of 67%-96% in wet seasons and 55%-72% in dry seasons.Distributions of NO 3-N and DSi against salinity were nearly constant during all cruises,and showed generally conservative mixing behaviors in the estuary (1YAN XiuLi ZHAI WeiDong HONG HuaSheng LI Yan GUO WeiDong HUANG Xiao 2012Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,18:16

3Species composition and distribution of marine nematode community in the North Taiwan Strait显示文摘Marine free-living nematodes were investigated at 13 sampling stations divided into three transects in the northern Taiwan Strait in February 1998. One hundred species of marine nematodes belonging to 91 Genera 28 Families 3 Orders were identified and were first recorded in the northern Taiwan Strait. The dominant species were Vasostoma sp., Sabatieria sp. 1, Linhystera sp. 1, Spilophorella sp., Daptonema sp., Halalaimus sp. and Dorylaimopsis variabilis. Their main densities were all over 4 950 ind./m2. According to mean density at transects, marine nematode density decreased from coastal Weitou to off Minjiang Estuary, which was similar to polychaete distribution in northern Taiwan Strait. The selective deposit feeder (1A) was the dominant food type of marine nematodes in the northern Taiwan Strait, but non-selective deposit feeders (1B) and epigrowth feeders (2A) occupied high proportion, indicating diverse feeding types of marine nematodes in the northern Taiwan Strait. 4Photo-production of dissolved inorganic carbon from dissolved organic matter in contrasting coastal waters in the southwestern Taiwan Strait, China显示文摘Photo-production of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) from chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) is an important transformation process in marine carbon cycle, but little is known about this process in Chinese coastal systems. This study investigated an estuarine water sample and a coastal seawater sample from the subtropical waters in southeast of China. Water samples were exposed to natural sunlight and the absorption and fluorescence of CDOM as well as the DIC concentration were measured in the summer of 2009. The estuarine water had higher CDOM level, molecular weight and proportion of humic-like fluorescent components than the seawater that exhibited abundant tryptophan-like fluorescent component. After a 3-day irradiation, the CDOM level decreased by 45% in the estuarine water and 20% in the seawater, accompanied with a decrease in the molecular weight and aromaticity of DOM which was inferred from an increase in the absorption spectral slope parameter. The photo-degradation rates of all the five fluorescent components were also notable, in particular two humic-like components (C4 and C5) were removed by 78% and 69% in the estuarine water and by 69% and 56% in the seawater. The estuarine water had a higher photo-production rate of DIC than the seawater (4.4 vs. 2.5 μmol/(L·day)), in part due to its higher CDOM abundance. 5Three-dimensional structure of a low salinity tongue in the southern Taiwan Strait observed in the summer of 2005显示文摘Cruise observations with CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) profiler were carried out in the southern Taiwan Strait in the summer of 2005. Using the cruise data, two-dimensional maps of salinity and temperature distributions at depths of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 m were generated. The maps show a low salinity tongue sandwiched by low temperature and high salinity waters on the shallow water side and high temperature and high salinity waters on the deep water side. The further analysis indicates that the low salinity water has a nature of river-diluted water. A possible source of the diluted water is the Zhujiang (Pearl) Estuary. Meanwhile, the summer monsoon is judged as a possible driving force for this northeastward jet-like current. The coastal upwelling and the South China Sea Warm Current confine the low salinity water to flow along the central line of the strait. Previous investigations and a numerical model are used to verify that the upstream of the low salinity current is the Zhujiang Estuary. 6Diurnal variation of nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in PM_(10) at a roadside site in Xiamen,China显示文摘Intensive daytime and nighttime sampling was carried out from 23 Oct to 31 Dec 2008 to investigate the occurrence of nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(NPAHs) in PM 10 at a roadside site in Xiamen,China.At the same time,six PM 10 samples were collected from a nearby roadway tunnel for comparison.Six NPAHs,namely 9-nitroanthracene,2-and 3-nitrofluoranthene,1nitropyrene,7-nitrobenz[a]anthracene,and 6-nitrobenzo[a]pyrene,were identified and quantified using GC/MS in negative ion chemical ionization mode.The average total concentration of six NPAHs(∑ NPAHs) in the cold season(26 Nov-31 Dec) was 2.3(daytime) and 9.9(nighttime) times higher than those in the warm season.Significant statistical difference(p < 0.01,2-tailed) of ∑ NPAHs between daytime and nighttime was found during both the warm and cold seasons.NPAHs were significantly positively correlated with their parent PAHs and nitrogen dioxide but negatively correlated with ambient temperature.The ratio of 2 + 3-nitrofluoranthene to 1nitropyrene exhibited a similar diurnal pattern as ∑ NPAHs and was generally greater than 5,indicating the importance of secondary atmospheric formation.The diurnal variations of NPAHs were all influenced by the diurnal variations of PAHs,nitrogen dioxide,sunlight,and temperature.The daily inhalable exposure to the six NPAHs in the tunnel was much higher than the roadside values in the warm season but only slightly higher than those in the cold season.Shuiping Wu Bingyu Yang Xinhong Wang Huasheng Hong Chungshin Yuan 2012Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,10:5
7Evolution of a coastal upwelling event during summer 2004 in the southern Taiwan Strait显示文摘A coastal upwelling event in the southern Taiwan Strait (STWS) was investigated using intensive cruise surveys (four repeated transects in a month) and satellite data in July and early August 2004.The extensive upwelling-associated surface cold water was first observed in early July (~2.0×10 4 km 2) along the STWS coast.Then,the cold surface water reduced in size by ~50% with decreased chlorophyll concentrations after 15 days,indicating the weakening of the upwelling event.At the end of July,the cold surface water disappeared.The temporal variations of the surface cold water and the 3-D hydrography around Dongshan Island are thought to be mainly attributed to the weakened upwelling-favorable southwestern wind,the asymmetric spatial structure of the wind field and the intrusion of warm water from the northern South China Sea.ZHANG Caiyun HONG Huasheng HU Chuanmin SHANG Shaoling 2011Acta Oceanologica Sinica2011,30,1:4
8Preliminary study on the distribution of nutrients, organic matter, trace metals in sea surface microlayer in Xiamen Bay and Jiulong Estuary显示文摘-The enrichment of nutrients (NOa-, NOa-, PO43-), suspended particles, organic matter (POC, PON,DOC) , and trace metals (Cu, Ni, Cd) was determined in the sea surface microlayer of Xiamen Bay and Jiulong Estuary. The mean enrichment factors ([Xi]microlayer/[Xi ]15cm in depth) mostly ranged between 1 . 0 and 2. 0. The dissolved forms were the major forms of the components measured, the enrichment of dissolved organic matter and suspended particles could lead to the changes in the total amount and speciation of nutrients and trace metals. No correlation was observed between sample concentrations, speciation, enrichment factors and sample locations. 9Proteomics of a toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella DH01:Detection and identification of cell surface proteins using fluorescent labeling显示文摘Alexandrium catenella DH01 is a toxic dinoflagellate species that is able to not only produce paralytic shellfish toxins,but also cause harmful algal blooms along the coast of China.In this study,we presented a new protocol for specific labeling and detection of the cell surface proteins(CSPs) of A.catenella DH01 cells using CyDye difference gel electrophoresis(DIGE) fluor minimal dyes.CSPs were identified using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis(2-DE) and MALDI TOF-TOF mass spectrometry(MS).The results showed that the fluorescent cyanine dye Cy3 could specifically label the CSPs of A.catenella DH01,with minimal labeling of intracellular proteins.Among three protein extraction methods evaluated,the Trizol method was the most efficient to extract CSPs with respect to protein spot number and resolution.Forty-one CSPs were separated and identified from A.catenella DH01 by 2-DE,in which 14 were identified in the protein database using MALDI TOF-TOF MS analysis.This work represents the first attempt to investigate the CSPs of A.catenella using the CyDye DIGE fluor dyeing method that provides a potentially important tool for future comprehensive characterization of CSPs and elucidation of the physiological functions of CSPs in dinoflagellates.LI Cheng WANG DaZhi DONG HongPo XIE ZhangXian HONG HuaSheng 2012Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,25:3

11Current status of bacteriological parameters and DOC/POC in Xiamen coastal waters显示文摘The surface and bottom waters samples were collected from six locations in Xiamen west-em sea. The quantified estimation of bacterial production (3H-thymidine method) and observation ofbacterial heterotrophic activity (14C-glucose method) have been made in order to have a better under-standing of the role of marine bacteria and their activities. The results showed that the mean value ofbacterial heterotrophic activity was 9 × 108 cells/(L. h) in the surface waters and 2.6 × 108 cells/( L. h)in the bottom waters. The mean value of bacterial production was 38 × 108 cells/( L. h) in the surfacewaters and 7.1 × 108 cells/(L.h) in the bottom waters. The relationship between bacterial production,heterotrophic activity, POC and DOC measured during this survey were discussed. 12A preliminary study of the variation of phytoplankton absorption coefficients in the northern South China Sea显示文摘The temporal and spatial variabilities of phytoplankton absorption coefficients (a ph (λ)) and their relationships with physical processes in the northern South China Sea were examined, based on in situ data collected from two cruise surveys during May 14 to 25, 2001 and November 2 to 21, 2002. Significant changes in the surface water in a ph values and B/R ratios (a ph (440)/a ph (675)) were observed in May, which were caused by a phytoplankton bloom on the inner shelf stimulated by a large river plume due to heavy precipitation. This is consistent with the observed one order of magnitude elevation of chlorophyll a and a shift from a pico/nano dominated phytoplankton community to one dominated by micro-algae. Enhanced vertical mixing due to strengthened northeast monsoon in November has been observed to result in higher surface a ph (675) (0.002–0.006 m-1 higher) and less pronounced subsurface maximum on the outer shelf/slope in November as compared with that in May. Measurements of a ph and B/R ratios from three transects in November revealed a highest surface a ph (675) immediately outside the mouth of the Zhujiang (Pearl) River Estuary, whereas lower a ph (675) and higher B/R ratios were featured in the outer shelf/slope waters, demonstrating the respective influence of the Zhujiang River plume and the oligotrophic water of the South China Sea. The difference in spectral shapes of phytoplankton absorption (measured by B/R ratios and bathochromic shifts) on these three transects infers that picoprocaryotes are the major component of the phytoplankton community on the outer shelf/slope rather than on the inner shelf. A regional tuning of the phytoplankton absorption spectral model (Carder et al., 1999) was attempted, demonstrating a greater spatial variation than temporal variation in the lead parameter a 0 (λ). 13Proteomic analysis of a toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella under different growth phases and conditions显示文摘Alexandrium is a widely spread dinoflagellate genus throughout many regions of the world,which not only causes the harmful algal blooms(HABs) but also results in the paralytic shellfish poisoning(PSP) throughout the world.This study compared protein profiles of A.catenella grown under different growth phases and conditions using a proteomic approach,and identified the differentially expressed proteins.The results showed that the expressions of proteins identified in three different regions of the gels,the groups 1,2 and 3 proteins,varied significantly with the growth phases and conditions.Group 1 proteins and six Group 2 proteins were highly expressed at the initial,exponential and stationary growth phases,eight Group 2 proteins were highly expressed only at the initial phase,and Group 3 proteins were highly expressed at the exponential and/or stationary phases.However,all these proteins were expressed at low levels or were barely visible at the dissipation phase.The expressions of groups 1 and 2 proteins were low or barely visible in various growth conditions except in continuous darkness they were highly expressed.Group 3 proteins,on the other hand,were overexpressed in continuous illumination and expressed at low levels or barely visible in continuous darkness or under nitrate-starvation.The data from MALDI-TOF-TOF mass spectrometry demonstrated that these differentially expressed proteins were associated with macromolecular biosynthesis,photosynthesis,tRNA synthesis and DNA stability,stress response and cell division regulation.Synthetase was the major component of the altered proteins.This is one of the first comprehensive proteomic study of a dinoflagellate,A.catenella,that provides a fundamental understanding of the proteins involved in A.catenella growth and response to environmental stresses,and potential physiological indicator proteins related to growth and environmental stress have been identified.WANG DaZhi LIN Lin WANG MingHua LI Cheng HONG HuaSheng 2012Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,25:2
14Grazing impact of microzooplankton on phytoplankton in the Xiamen Bay using pigment-specific dilution technique显示文摘Phytoplankton group-specific growth and microzooplankton grazing were determined seasonally using the dilution technique with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in the Xiamen Bay,a subtropical bay in southeast China,between May 2003 and February 2004. The results showed that growth rates of phytoplankton ranged from 0.71 to 2.2 d-1 with the highest value occurred in the inner bay in May. Microzooplankton grazing rates ranged from 0.5 to 3.1 d-1 with the highest value occurred in the inner bay in August. Microzooplankton grazing impact ranged from 39% to 95% on total phytoplankton Chl a biomass,and 65% to 181% on primary production. The growth and grazing rates of each phytoplankton group varied,the highest growth rate (up to 3.3 d-1) was recorded for diatoms in August,while the maximum grazing rate (up to 2.1 d-1) was recorded for chlorophytes in February in the inner bay. Among main phytoplankton groups,grazing pressure of microzooplankton ranged from 10% to 83% on Chl a biomass,and from 14% to 151% on primary production. The highest grazing pressure on biomass was observed for cryptophytes (83%) in August,while the maximum grazing pressure on primary production was observed for cyanobacteria (up to 151%) in December in the inner bay. Net growth rates of larger phytoplanktons (diatoms and dinoflagellates) were higher than those of smaller groups (prasinophytes,chlorophytes and cyanobacteria).
