1Solid-pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas: Clinical experience and literature review显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the clinical presentations of solidpseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas (SPT) and examine the diagnosis, treatment, low grade malignant potential of this rare disease.METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed a series of seven patients with SPT managed in our hospital between July 1990 and October 2003. Six females and one male with mean age of 31 years (range 13 to 50 years) were diagnosed with SPT at our institution.RESULTS: Clinical presentation included a palpable abdominal mass in two patients and vague abdominal discomfort in another two. Two patients were asymptomatic;their tumors were found incidentally on abdominal sonographic examination for other reasons. The final patient was admitted with hemoperitoneum secondary to tumor rupture. The mean diameter of the tumors in the seven patients was 10.5 cm (range 5 to 20 cm). The lesions were located in the body and tail in five cases and in the head of the pancreas in two. Surgical procedures included distal pancreatectomy (3), distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy (2), pancreaticoduodenectomy (1) and a pylorus-preserving Whipple procedure (1). There were gross adhesions or histological evidence of infiltration to the adjacent pancreas and/or splenic capsule in four cases. None of the patients received adjuvant therapy.The mean follow up was 7 years (range 0.5 to 14 years).One patient developed multiple liver metastases after 14 years of follow up.CONCLUSION: SPT is a rare tumor that behaves less aggressively than other pancreatic tumor. 4Benefits of Conservation Agriculture on Soil and Water Conservation and Its Progress in China显示文摘Conservation agriculture has been practised for three decades and has been spread widely. There are many nomenclatures surrounding conservation agriculture and differ to each other lightly. Conservation agriculture (CA) is a system approach to soil and water conservation, high crop productivity and profitability, in one word, it is a system approach to sustainable agriculture. Yet, because conservation agriculture is a knowledge-intensive and a complex system to learn and implement, and also because of traditions of intensive cultivation, adoption rates have been low, since to date, only about seven percent of the world's arable and permanent cropland area is farmed under conservation agriculture. The practice and wider extention of conservation agriculture thus requires a deeper understanding of its ecological underpinnings in order to manage its various elements for sustainable intensification, where the aim is to conserve soil and water and improve sustainability over the long term. 11THREE-DIMENSIONAL NUMERICAL MODELING OF SECONDARY FLOWS IN A WIDE CURVED CHANNEL显示文摘Most natural rivers are curved channels, where the turbulent flows have a complex helical pattern, as has been extensively studied both numerically and experimentally. The helical flow structure in curved channels has an important bearing on sediment transport, riverbed evolution, and pollutant transport study. In this article, different turbulence closure schemes i.e., the mixing-length model and the k-ε model with different pressure solution techniques i. e., hydrostatic assumptions and dynamic pressure treatments are applied to study the helical secondary flows in an experiment curved channel. The agreements of vertically-averaged velocities between the simulated results obtained by using different turbulence models with different pressure solution techniques and the measured data are satisfactory. 13Overexpression of the Suaeda salsa SsNHX1 gene confers enhanced salt and drought tolerance to transgenic Zea mays显示文摘Maize is one of the most important crops worldwide, but it suffers from salt stress when grown in saline-alkaline soil. There is therefore an urgent need to improve maize salt tolerance and crop yield. In this study, the SsNHX1 gene of Suaeda salsa, which encodes a vacuolar membrane Na^+/H^+ antiporter, was transformed into the maize inbred line 18-599 by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. Transgenic maize plants overexpressing the SsNHX1 gene showed less growth retardation when treated with an increasing NaCl gradient of up to 1%, indicating enhanced salt tolerance. The improved salt tolerance of transgenic plants was also demonstrated by a significantly elevated seed germination rate(79%) and a reduction in seminal root length inhibition. Moreover, transgenic plants under salt stress exhibited less physiological damage. SsNHX1-overexpressing transgenic maize accumulated more Na^+ and K^+ than wild-type(WT) plants particularly in the leaves, resulting in a higher ratio of K^+/Na^+ in the leaves under salt stress. This result revealed that the improved salt tolerance of SsNHX1-overexpressing transgenic maize plants was likely attributed to SsNHX1-mediated localization of Na^+ to vacuoles and subsequent maintenance of the cytosolic ionic balance. In addition, SsNHX1 overexpression also improved the drought tolerance of the transgenic maize plants, as rehydrated transgenic plants were restored to normal growth while WT plants did not grow normally after dehydration treatment. 16Crystal structures of D-psicose 3-epimerase from Clostridium cellulolyticum H10 and its complex with ketohexose sugars显示文摘D-Psicose 3-epimerase(DPEase)is demonstrated to be useful in the bioproduction of D-psicose,a rare hexose sugar,from D-fructose,found plenty in nature.Clostridium cellulolyticum H10 has recently been identified as a DPEase that can epimerize D-fructose to yield D-psicose with a much higher conversion rate when compared with the conventionally used DTEase.In this study,the crystal structure of the C.cellulolyticum DPEase was determined.The enzyme assembles into a tetramer and each subunit shows a(β/α)8 TIM barrel fold with a Mn2+metal ion in the active site.Additional crystal structures of the enzyme in complex with substrates/products(D-psicose,D-fructose,D-tagatose and D-sorbose)were also determined.From the complex structures of C.cellulolyticum DPEase with D-psicose and D-fructose,the enzyme has much more interactions with D-psicose than D-fructose by forming more hydrogen bonds between the substrate and the active site residues.Accordingly,based on these ketohexosebound complex structures,a C3-O3 proton-exchange mechanism for the conversion between D-psicose and D-fructose is proposed here.These results provide a clear idea for the deprotonation/protonation roles of E150 and E244 in catalysis.Hsiu-Chien Chan Yueming Zhu Yumei Hu Tzu-Ping Ko Chun-Hsiang Huang Feifei Ren Chun-Chi Chen Yanhe Ma Rey-Ting Guo Yuanxia Sun 2012Protein & Cell2012,3,2:6

19Statistical extremes and peak factors in wind-induced vibration of tall buildings显示文摘In the structural design of tall buildings,peak factors have been widely used to predict mean extreme responses of tall buildings under wind excitations.Vanmarcke's peak factor is directly related to an explicit measure of structural reliability against a Gaussian response process.We review the use of this factor for time-variant reliability design by comparing it to the conventional Davenport's peak factor.Based on the asymptotic theory of statistical extremes,a new closed-form peak factor,the so-called Gamma peak factor,can be obtained for a non-Gaussian resultant response characterized by a Rayleigh distribution process.Using the Gamma peak factor,a combined peak factor method was developed for predicting the expected maximum resultant responses of a building undergoing lateral-torsional vibration.The effects of the standard deviation ratio of two sway components and the inter-component correlation on the evaluation of peak resultant response were also investigated.Utilizing wind tunnel data derived from synchronous multi-pressure measurements,we carried out a wind-induced time history response analysis of the Commonwealth Advisory Aeronautical Research Council(CAARC) standard tall building to validate the applicability of the Gamma peak factor to the prediction of the peak resultant acceleration.Results from the building example indicated that the use of the Gamma peak factor enables accurate predictions to be made of the mean extreme resultant acceleration responses for dynamic serviceability performance design of modern tall buildings.Ming-feng HUANG Chun-man CHAN Wen-juan LOU Kenny Chung-Siu KWOK 2012Journal of Zhejiang University-Science A(Applied Physics & Engineering)2012,13,1:4
20Building metallurgical bonding interfaces in an immiscible Mo/Cu system by irradiation damage alloying (IDA)显示文摘For the immiscible Mo/Cu system with a positive heat of mixing(△H_m > 0), building metallurgical bonding interfaces directly between immiscible Mo and Cu and preparing Mo/Cu laminar metal matrix composites(LMMCs) are very difficult. To solve the problem, a new alloying method for immiscible systems, which is named as irradiation damage alloying(IDA), is presented in this paper. The IDA primarily consists of three steps. Firstly, Mo is damaged by irradiation with multi-energy(186, 62 keV) Cu ion beams at a dose of 2 × 10^(17) ions/cm^2. Secondly, Cu layers are superimposed on the surfaces of the irradiation-damaged Mo to obtain Mo/Cu laminated specimens. Thirdly, the irradiation damage induces the diffusion alloying between Mo and Cu when the laminated specimens are annealed at 950℃ in a protective atmosphere.Through IDA, Mo/Cu LMMCs are prepared in this paper. The tensile tests carried out for the Mo/Cu LMMCs specimens show that the Mo/Cu interfaces constructed via IDA have high normal and shear strengths.Additionally, the microstructure of the Mo/Cu interface is characterized by High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy(HRTEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Energy Dispersive X-ray(EDX) attached in HRTEM. The microscopic characterization results show that the expectant diffusion between Mo and Cu occurs through the irradiation damage during the process of IDA. Thus a Mo/Cu metallurgical bonding interface successfully forms. Moreover, the microscopic test results show that the Mo/Cu metallurgical interface is mainly constituted of crystalline phases with twisted and tangled lattices, and amorphous phase is not observed.
