1Evolving concepts in bone infection: redefining “biofilm”,“acute vs. chronic osteomyelitis”, “the immune proteome” and “local antibiotic therapy”显示文摘Osteomyelitis is a devastating disease caused by microbial infection of bone. While the frequency of infection following elective orthopedic surgery is low, rates of reinfection are disturbingly high. Staphylococcus aureus is responsible for the majority of chronic osteomyelitis cases and is often considered to be incurable due to bacterial persistence deep within bone. Unfortunately, there is no consensus on clinical classifications of osteomyelitis and the ensuing treatment algorithm. Given the high patient morbidity,mortality, and economic burden caused by osteomyelitis, it is important to elucidate mechanisms of bone infection to inform novel strategies for prevention and curative treatment. Recent discoveries in this field have identified three distinct reservoirs of bacterial biofilm including: Staphylococcal abscess communities in the local soft tissue and bone marrow, glycocalyx formation on implant hardware and necrotic tissue, and colonization of the osteocyte-lacuno canalicular network(OLCN) of cortical bone. In contrast, S.aureus intracellular persistence in bone cells has not been substantiated in vivo, which challenges this mode of chronic osteomyelitis. There have also been major advances in our understanding of the immune proteome against S. aureus, from clinical studies of serum antibodies and media enriched for newly synthesized antibodies(MENSA), which may provide new opportunities for osteomyelitis diagnosis, prognosis, and vaccine development. Finally, novel therapies such as antimicrobial implant coatings and antibiotic impregnated 3D-printed scaffolds represent promising strategies for preventing and managing this devastating disease. 2Anti-plane (SH) waves diffraction by an underground semi-circular cavity:analytical solution显示文摘Diffraction of a two-dimensional (2D) semi-circular cavity in a half-space under incident SH-waves is studied using the classic wave function expansion method with a new de-coupling technique.This so-called 'improved cosine half-range expansion' algorithm exhibits an excellent performance in reducing displacement residual errors at two rim points of concern.The governing equations are developed in a manner that minimizes the residues of the boundary conditions.Detailed derivation and analysis procedures as well as truncation of infinite linear governing equations are presented.The semi-circular cavity model presented in this paper, due to its simple profile, is expected to be used in seismic wave propagation studies as a benchmark for examining the accuracies of various analytical or numerical methods for mixed-boundary wave propagation problems.Luo Hao Vincent W. 3Diffraction of plane SH waves by a semi-circular cavity in half-space显示文摘This paper presents a closed-form solution for diffraction of plane SH waves by a semi-circular cavity in half-space by using wave function expansion method. Accuracy of the solution is checked by the displacement residual and stress residual along the boundaries. 4Ciliary parathyroid hormone signaling activates transforming growth factor-βto maintain intervertebral disc homeostasis during aging显示文摘Degenerative disc disease(DDD) is associated with intervertebral disc degeneration of spinal instability. Here, we report that the cilia of nucleus pulposus(NP) cells mediate mechanotransduction to maintain anabolic activity in the discs. We found that mechanical stress promotes transport of parathyroid hormone 1 receptor(PTH1 R) to the cilia and enhances parathyroid hormone(PTH) signaling in NP cells. PTH induces transcription of integrin α_vβ_6 to activate the transforming growth factor(TGF)-β-connective tissue growth factor(CCN2)-matrix proteins signaling cascade. Intermittent injection of PTH(iPTH) effectively attenuates disc degeneration of aged mice by direct signaling through NP cells, specifically improving intervertebral disc height and volume by increasing levels of TGF-β activity, CCN2, and aggrecan. PTH1 R is expressed in both mouse and human NP cells. Importantly,knockout PTH1 R or cilia in the NP cells results in significant disc degeneration and blunts the effect of PTH on attenuation of aged discs. 5Recent Progress in Dual-Polarization Radar Research and Applications in China显示文摘Dual-polarization(dual-pol)radar can measure additional parameters that provide more microphysical information of precipitation systems than those provided by conventional Doppler radar.The dual-pol parameters have been successfully utilized to investigate precipitation microphysics and improve radar quantitative precipitation estimation(QPE).The recent progress in dual-pol radar research and applications in China is summarized in four aspects.Firstly,the characteristics of several representative dual-pol radars are reviewed.Various approaches have been developed for radar data quality control,including calibration,attenuation correction,calculation of specific differential phase shift,and identification and removal of non-meteorological echoes.Using dual-pol radar measurements,the microphysical characteristics derived from raindrop size distribution retrieval,hydrometeor classification,and QPE is better understood in China.The limited number of studies in China that have sought to use dual-pol radar data to validate the microphysical parameterization and initialization of numerical models and assimilate dual-pol data into numerical models are summarized.The challenges of applying dual-pol data in numerical models and emerging technologies that may make significant impacts on the field of radar meteorology are discussed.Kun ZHAO Hao HUANG Mingjun WANG Wen-Chau LEE Gang CHEN Long WEN Jing WEN Guifu ZHANG Ming XUE Zhengwei YANG Liping LIU Chong WU Zhiqun HU Sheng CHEN 2019Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2019,36,9:12
6Scattering of plane SH waves by a circular-arc hill with a circular tunnel显示文摘An analytical solution for scattering of incident SH waves by a circular-arc hill with a concentric circular tunnel was derived by Fourier-Bessel series expansion and auxiliary functions technique. The solution is reduced to solving a set of infinite linear algebraic equations finally. The accuracies of the numerical results are checked by the residual errors of boundary conditions with the truncation order increasing. 10Redefining Budd-Chiari syndrome:A systematic review显示文摘AIM:To re-examine whether hepatic vein thrombosis(HVT)(classical Budd-Chiari syndrome)and hepatic vena cava-Budd Chiari syndrome(HVC-BCS)are the same disorder.METHODS:A systematic review of observational studies conducted in adult subjects with primary BCS,hepatic vein outflow tract obstruction,membranous obstruction of the inferior vena cava(IVC),obliterative hepatocavopathy,or HVT during the period of January2000 until February 2015 was conducted using the following databases:Cochrane Library,CINAHL,MEDLINE,Pub Med and Scopus.RESULTS:Of 1299 articles identified,26 were included in this study.Classical BCS is more common in women with a pure hepatic vein obstruction(49%-74%).HVCBCS is more common in men with the obstruction often located in both the inferior vena cava and hepatic veins(14%-84%).Classical BCS presents with acute abdominal pain,ascites,and hepatomegaly.HVC-BCS presents with chronic abdominal pain and abdominalwall varices.Myeloproliferative neoplasms(MPN)are the most common etiology of classical BCS(16%-62%)with the JAK2V617-F mutation found in 26%-52%.In HVCBCS,MPN are found in 4%-5%,and the JAK2V617-F mutation in 2%-5%.Classical BCS responds well to medical management alone and 1st line management of HVC-BCS involves percutaneous recanalization,with few managed with medical management alone.CONCLUSION:Systematic review of recent data suggests that classical BCS and HVC-BCS may be two clinically different disorders that involve the disruption of hepatic venous outflow.Naomi Shin Young H Kim Hao Xu Hai-Bin Shi Qing-Qiao Zhang Jean Paul Colon Pons Ducksoo Kim Yi Xu Fei-Yun Wu Samuel Han Byung-Boong Lee Lin-Sun Li 2016World Journal of Hepatology2016,8,16:6
11Comparison of non-schistosomal rectosigmoid cancer and schistosomal rectosigmoid cancer显示文摘AIM: To compare the clinicopathological features of patients with non-schistosomal rectosigmoid cancer and schistosomal rectosigmoid cancer.METHODS: All the patients with rectosigmoid carcinoma who underwent laparoscopic radical surgical resection in the Shanghai Minimally Invasive Surgical Center at Ruijin Hospital affiliated to Shanghai JiaoTong University between October 2009 and October2013 were included in this study. Twenty-six cases of colonic schistosomiasis diagnosed through colonoscopy and pathological examinations were collected. Symptoms,endoscopic findings and clinicopathological characteristics were evaluated retrospectively.RESULTS: There were no significant differences between patients with and without schistosomiasis in gender, age, CEA, CA19-9, preoperative biopsy findings or postoperative pathology. Patients with rectosigmoid schistosomiasis had a significantly higher CA-125 level and a larger proportion of these patients were at an early tumor stage(P = 0.003). Various morphological characteristics of schistosomiasis combined with rectosigmoid cancer could be found by colonoscopic examination: 46% were fungating mass polyps, 23%were congestive and ulcerative polyps, 23% were cauliflower-like masses, 8% were annular masses.Only 27% of the patients were diagnosed with rectal carcinoma preoperatively after the biopsy. Computed tomography(CT) scans showed thickened intestinal walls combined with linear and tram-track calcifications in 26 patients.CONCLUSION: Rectosigmoid carcinoma combined with schistosomiasis is associated with higher CA-125 values and early tumor stages. 12Subvoxel light-sheet microscopy for high-resolution high-throughput volumetric imaging of large biomedical specimens显示文摘A key challenge when imaging whole biomedical specimens is how to quickly obtain massive cellular information over a large field of view(FOV).We report a subvoxel light-sheet microscopy(SLSM)method enabling high-throughput volumetric imaging of mesoscale specimens at cellular resolution.A nonaxial,continuous scanning strategy is developed to rapidly acquire a stack of large-FOV images with three-dimensional(3-D)nanoscale shifts encoded.Then,by adopting a subvoxel-resolving procedure,the SLSM method models these low-resolution,cross-correlated images in the spatial domain and can iteratively recover a 3-D image with improved resolution throughout the sample.This technique can surpass the optical limit of a conventional light-sheet microscope by more than three times,with high acquisition speeds of gigavoxels per minute.By fast reconstruction of 3-D cultured cells,intact organs,and live embryos,SLSM method presents a convenient way to circumvent the trade-off between mapping large-scale tissue(>100 mm3)and observing single cell(∼1-μm resolution).It also eliminates the need of complicated mechanical stitching or modulated illumination,using a simple light-sheet setup and fast graphics processing unit-based computation to achieve high-throughput,high-resolution 3-D microscopy,which could be tailored for a wide range of biomedical applications in pathology,histology,neuroscience,etc.Peng Fei Jun Nie Juhyun Lee Yichen Ding Shuoran Li Hao Zhang Masaya Hagiwara Tingting Yu Tatiana Segura Chih-Ming Ho Dan Zhu Tzung KHsiaic 2019Advanced Photonics2019,1,1:6

14Genome-wide analysis identified 17 new loci influencing intraocular pressure in Chinese population显示文摘Intraocular pressure(IOP) is a major risk factor for glaucoma. Genetic determinants of intraocular pressure can provide critical insights into the genetic architecture of glaucoma and, as a result, open new avenues for therapeutic intervention. We performed a genome-wide association study and replication analysis of 8,552 Chinese participants. In the genome-wide association study, we identified 51 loci that surpassed the significance of P<9×10^(-7), and we formally replicated these loci. A combined discovery and replication meta-analysis identified 21 genome-wide loci that surpassed the genome-wide significance of P<5×10^(-8), including 4 previously reported loci: rs145063132(7 p21.2, ETV1/DGKB), rs548030386(7 q31.2, ST7 near CAV1/CAV2), rs7047871(9 p24.2, GLIS3), and rs2472494(9 q31.1, ABCA1/SLC44 A1). Of the 17 newly identified loci, five were reported to have ocular related phenotypes: PTCH2(rs7525308 in 1 p34.1), LRIF1/DRAM2(rs1282146 in 1 p13.3), COLEC11(rs201143466 in 2 p25.3),SPTBN1(rs4514918 in 2 p16.2), and CRK(rs11078446 in 17 p13.3). 17Microstructural evolution and mechanism of grain growth in magnesia ceramics prepared by high pressure and temperature with ultra-high heating rate显示文摘The fast densification method of combustion reaction plus quick pressing was adopted to prepare nanocrystalline ceramics.The densification process of magnesia compact with a particle size of 100 nm was investigated,under the applied pressure of up to 170 MPa,and the temperature range of 1740–2080 K with ultra-high heating rate(above 1700 K/min).High-purity magnesia ceramics with a relative density of 98.8%and an average grain size of 120 nm was obtained at 1740 K,and the grain growth during the densification process was effectively restrained.The characteristic morphology of evaporation-condensation was observed in the compact prepared at 2080 K,which revealed the actual process of mass transfer by gas diffusion.Moreover,the investigation on the microstructure evolution and mechanism of grain growth was carried out,on the basis of as-preserved nanocrystalline ceramics.The result indicated that the grain growth of the nanocrystalline MgO was controlled by the mechanism of evaporation-condensation rather than surface diffusion.Furthermore,the pressure had an influence of restraining the grain growth based on solid diffusion and strengthening the effect of gas diffusion with the increasing temperature.Under the particular conditions,there existed an appropriate temperature for the densification of nanocrystalline magnesia,while the excessive temperature would exaggerate grain growth and impede densification.LIU JiangHao FU ZhengYi WANG WeiMin ZHANG JinYong WANG Hao WANG YuCheng LEE SooWohn NIIHARA Koichi 2014Science China(Technological Sciences)2014,57,6:3
18Efficient Subchannel Allocation Based on Clustered Interference Alignment in Ultra-Dense Femtocell Networks显示文摘In this paper, we exploit clustered interference alignment(IA) for efficient subchannel allocation in ultra-dense orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access(OFDMA) based femtocell networks, which notably improves the spectral efficiency as well as addresses the feasibility issue of IA. Our problem is formulated as a combinatorial optimization problem which is NP-hard. To avoid obtaining its optimal solution by exhaustive search, we propose a two-phases efficient solution with low-complexity. The first phase groups all the femtocell user equipments(FUEs) into disjoint clusters, and the second phase allocates subchannels to the formed clusters where IA is performed. By doing this, the intra-cluster and inter-cluster interferences are mitigated by clustered IA and subchannel allocation in ultra-dense femtocell networks, respectively.Also, low-complexity algorithm is proposed to solve the corresponding sub-problem in each phase. 19GeoChip-based analysis of the microbial community functional structures in simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification process显示文摘The elemental sulfur(S0) recovery was evaluated in the presence of nitrate in two development models of simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification(SDD) process. At the loading rates of 0.9 kg S/(m3·day) for sulfide and 0.4 kg N/(m3·day) for nitrate, S0 conversion rate was 91.1% in denitrifying sulfide removal(DSR) model which was higher than in integrated simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification(ISDD) model(25.6%). A comprehensive analysis of functional diversity, structure and metabolic potential of microbial communities was examined in two models by using functional gene array(GeoChip 2.0). GeoChip data indicated that diversity indices, community structure, and abundance of functional genes were distinct between two models. Diversity indices(Simpson's diversity index(1/D) and Shannon–Weaver index(H′)) of all detected genes showed that with elevated influent loading rate, the functional diversity decreased in ISDD model but increased in DSR model. In contrast to ISDD model, the overall abundance of dsr genes was lower in DSR model, while some functional genes targeting from nitrate-reducing sulfide-oxidizing bacteria(NR-SOB), such as Thiobacillus denitrificans, Sulfurimonas denitrificans, and Paracoccus pantotrophus were more abundant in DSR model which were highly associated with the change of S0 conversion rate obtained in two models. 20Prediction and assessment of demand response potential with coupon incentives in highly renewable power systems显示文摘Demand Response(DR)provides both operational and financial benefits to a variety of stakeholders in the power system.For example,in the deregulated market operated by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas(ERCOT),load serving entities(LSEs)usually purchase electricity from the wholesale market(either in day-ahead or real-time market)and sign fixed retail price contracts with their end-consumers.Therefore,incentivizing end-consumers’load shift from peak to off-peak hours could benefit the LSE in terms of reducing its purchase of electricity under high prices from the real-time market.As the first-of-its-kind implementation of Coupon Incentive-based Demand Response(CIDR),the EnergyCoupon project provides end-consumers with dynamic time-of-use DR event announcements,individualized load reduction targets with EnergyCoupons as the incentive for meeting these targets,as well as periodic lotteries using these coupons as lottery tickets for winning dollar-value gifts.A number of methodologies are developed for this special type of DR program including price/baseline prediction,individualized target setting and a lottery mechanism.This paper summarizes the methodologies,design,critical findings,as well as the potential generalization of such an experiment.Comparison of the EnergyCoupon with a conventional Time-of-Use(TOU)price-based DR program is also conducted.Experimental results in the year 2017 show that by combining dynamic coupon offers with periodic lotteries,the effective cost for demand response providers in EnergyCoupon can be substantially reduced,while achieving a similar level of demand reduction as conventional DR programs.Hao Ming Bainan Xia Ki-Yeob Lee Adekunle Adepoju Srinivas Shakkottai Le Xie 2020Protection and Control of Modern Power Systems2020,5,1:3
