1Response of microbial communities to biochar-amended soils:a critical review显示文摘Application of biochar to soils changes soil physicochemical properties and stimulates the activities of soil microorganisms that influence soil quality and plant performance.Studying the response of soil microbial communities to biochar amendments is important for better understanding interactions of biochar with soil,as well as plants.However,the effect of biochar on soil microorganisms has received less attention than its influences on soil physicochemical properties.In this review,the following key questions are discussed:(i)how does biochar affect soil microbial activities,in particular soil carbon(C)mineralization,nutrient cycling,and enzyme activities?(ii)how do microorganisms respond to biochar amendment in contaminated soils?and(iii)what is the role of biochar as a growth promoter for soil microorganisms?Many studies have demonstrated that biochar-soil application enhances the soil microbial biomass with substantial changes in microbial community composition.Biochar amendment changes microbial habitats,directly or indirectly affects microbial metabolic activities,and modifies the soil microbial community in terms of their diversity and abundance.However,chemical properties of biochar,(especially pH and nutrient content),and physical properties such as pore size,pore volume,and specific surface area play significant roles in determining the efficacy of biochar on microbial performance as biochar provides suitable habitats for microorgan-isms.The mode of action of biochar leading to stimulation of microbial activities is complex and is influenced by the nature of biochar as well as soil conditions.Kumuduni Niroshika Palansooriya James Tsz Fung Wong Yohey Hashimoto Longbin Huang Jörg Rinklebe Scott X.Chang Nanthi Bolan Hailong Wang Yong Sik Ok 2019Biochar2019,1,1:34

7Conversion hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma with main portal vein tumour thrombus after lenvatinib treatment: A case report显示文摘BACKGROUND Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)accompanied by portal vein tumour thrombus(PVTT)presents an aggressive disease course,worsening liver function reserve,and a high recurrence rate.Clinical practice guidelines recommend systemic therapy as the first-line option for HCC with portal invasion.However,to achieve longer survival in these patients,the treatment strategy should be concluded with removal of the tumour by locoregional therapy.We experienced a case of initially unresectable HCC with main PVTT converted to radical hepatectomy after lenvatinib treatment.CASE SUMMARY A 59-year-old male with chronic hepatitis C infection visited our clinic as a regular post-surgery follow-up.Contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography revealed a liver mass diffusely located at the lateral segment with a massive PVTT extending from the umbilical portion to the main and contralateral third-order portal branches.With the diagnosis of unresectable HCC with Vp4(main trunk/contralateral branch)PVTT,lenvatinib was started at 12 mg/d.The computed tomography taken 3 mo after starting lenvatinib showed regression of the PVTT,which had retreated to the contralateral first-order portal branch.He tolerated the full dose without major adverse effects.With cessation of lenvatinib for 7 d,radical left lobectomy and PVTT thrombectomy were conducted.The patient’s postoperative course was uneventful.Microscopically,the primary lesion showed fibrotic changes,with moderately to poorly differentiated tumour cells surrounded by granulation tissues in some areas.The majority of the PVTT showed necrosis.He was alive without recurrence for 8 mo.CONCLUSION This is the first case of HCC with Vp4 PVTT in which radical conversion hepatectomy was succeeded after lenvatinib treatment.Kazuhiro Takahashi Jaejeong Kim Amane Takahashi Shinji Hashimoto Manami Doi Kinji Furuya Ryosuke Hashimoto Yohei Owada Koichi Ogawa Yusuke Ohara Yoshimasa Akashi Katsuji Hisakura Tsuyoshi Enomoto Osamu Shimomura Masayuki Noguchi Tatsuya Oda 2021World Journal of Hepatology2021,13,3:1

10Arsenic removal from water and soils using pristine and modified biochars显示文摘Arsenic(As)is recognized as a persistent and toxic contaminant in the environment that is harmful to humans.Biochar,a porous carbonaceous material with tunable functionality,has been used widely as an adsorbent for remediating As-contaminated water and soils.Several types of pristine and modified biochar are available,and significant efforts have been made toward modifying the surface of biochars to increase their adsorption capacity for As.Adsorption capacity is influenced by multiple factors,including biomass pyrolysis temperature,pH,the presence of dissolved organic carbon,surface charge,and the presence of phosphate,silicate,sulfate,and microbial activity.Improved As adsorption in modified biochars is attributed to several mechanisms including surface complexation/precipitation,ion exchange,oxidation,reduction,electrostatic interactions,and surface functional groups that have a relatively higher affinity for As.Modified biochars show promise for As adsorption;however,further research is required to improve the performance of these materials.For example,modified biochars must be eco-friendly,cost-effective,reliable,efficient,and sustainable to ensure their widespread application for immobilizing As in contaminated water and soils.Conducting relevant research to address these issues relies on a thorough understanding of biochar modifications to date.This study presents an in-depth review of pristine and modified biochars,including their production,physicochemical properties,and As adsorption mechanisms.Furthermore,a comprehensive evaluation of biochar applications is provided in As-contaminated environments as a guide for selecting suitable biochars for As removal in the field.Wei Zhang Yoora Cho Meththika Vithanage Sabry M.Shaheen Jörg Rinklebe Daniel S.Alessi Chia-Hung Hou Yohey Hashimoto Piumi Amasha Withana Yong Sik Ok 2022Biochar2022,4,1:0
11Decline in subarachnoid haemorrhage volumes associated with the first wave of the COVID- 19 pandemic显示文摘Background During the COVID-19 pandemic,decreased volumes of stroke admissions and mechanical thrombectomy were reported.The study’s objective was to examine whether subarachnoid haemorrhage(SAH)hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm coiling interventions demonstrated similar declines.Methods We conducted a cross-sectional,retrospective,observational study across 6 continents,37 countries and 140 comprehensive stroke centres.Patients with the diagnosis of SAH,aneurysmal SAH,ruptured aneurysm coiling interventions and COVID-19 were identified by prospective aneurysm databases or by International Classification of Diseases,10th Revision,codes.The 3-month cumulative volume,monthly volumes for SAH hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm coiling procedures were compared for the period before(1 year and immediately before)and during the pandemic,defined as 1 March-31 May 2020.The prior 1-year control period(1 March-31 May 2019)was obtained to account for seasonal variation.Findings There was a significant decline in SAH hospitalisations,with 2044 admissions in the 3 months immediately before and 1585 admissions during the pandemic,representing a relative decline of 22.5%(95%CI−24.3%to−20.7%,p<0.0001).Embolisation of ruptured aneurysms declined with 1170-1035 procedures,respectively,representing an 11.5%(95%CI−13.5%to−9.8%,p=0.002)relative drop.Subgroup analysis was noted for aneurysmal SAH hospitalisation decline from 834 to 626 hospitalisations,a 24.9%relative decline(95%CI−28.0%to−22.1%,p<0.0001).A relative increase in ruptured aneurysm coiling was noted in low coiling volume hospitals of 41.1%(95%CI 32.3%to 50.6%,p=0.008)despite a decrease in SAH admissions in this tertile.Interpretation There was a relative decrease in the volume of SAH hospitalisations,aneurysmal SAH hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm embolisations during the
