The global significance of biodiversity science in China: an overview显示文摘Biodiversity science in China has seen rapid growth over recent decades, ranging from baseline biodiversity studies to understanding the processes behind evolution across dynamic regions such as the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. We review research, including species catalogues;biodiversity monitoring;the origins, distributions, maintenance and threats to biodiversity;biodiversity-related ecosystem function and services;and species and ecosystems'responses to global change.Next,we identify priority topics and offer suggestions and priorities for future biodiversity research in China. These priorities include(i)the ecology and biogeography of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and surrounding mountains, and that of subtropical and tropical forests across China;(ii)marine and inland aquatic biodiversity;and(iii)effective conservation and management to identify and maintain synergies between biodiversity and socio-economic development to fulfil China's vision for becoming an ecological civilization. In addition,we propose three future strategies:(i)translate advanced biodiversity science into practice for biodiversity conservation;(ii)strengthen capacity building and application of advanced technologies, including high-throughput sequencing, genomics and remote sensing;and(iii)strengthen and expand international collaborations.Based on the recent rapid progress of biodiversity research,China is well positioned to become a global leader in biodiversity research in the near future. | Xiangcheng Mi Gang Feng Yibo Hu Jian Zhang Lei Chen Richard T.Corlett Alice C.Hughes Stuart Pimm Bernhard Schmid Suhua Shi Jens-Christian Svenning Keping Ma | 2021 | National Science Review2021,8,7: | 16

Six steps for building a technological knowledge base for future taxonomic work显示文摘Species are the principal category we use to study, understand, and conserve the natural world,so how we define species has a cascading impact across fields, well beyond biology[1].Despite such importance, debate on species concepts continues to this day([2]2020),with consequences for what organisms we recognize, study and protect.Given the wealth of life forms on our planet. | Michael C.Orr Anderson Feijó Douglas Chesters Alfried P.Vogler Silas Bossert Rafael R.Ferrari Mark John Costello Alice C.Hughes Lars Krogmann John S.Ascher Xin Zhou De-Zhu Li Ming Bai Jun Chen Deyan Ge Arong Luo Gexia Qiao Paul H.Williams Ai-bing Zhang Keping Ma Feng Zhang Chao-Dong Zhu | 2022 | National Science Review2022,9,12: | 1

Challenges and possible solutions to creating an achievable and effective Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework显示文摘Global biodiversity is in crisis as a result of human activity. This biodiversity crisis has been well documented by scientists, recognized by world leaders, politicians, businesses, and citizens. Both the biodiversity and climate crises need to be addressed now.2020 was when this change was supposed to start, with the 15th Conference of Parties(COP15)of the Convention on Biodiversity(CBD)meeting in Kunming, and the 26th Conference of Parties(COP26)of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change meeting in Glasgow, but both meetings were postponed.COP26 was held a year late(November 2021),while COP15 was split into two, with the first part held in Kunming in October 2021,and the second part scheduled for Montreal in December 2022.This meeting in Montreal-arguably the most important in the CBDs history-must agree on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework(GBF),to reverse biodiversity loss.Failure to reach agreement in Montreal would ultimately be a failure of us all, with irreversible consequences for life on earth.Yet,with three months before the final deadline only 20%of text and two targets are agreed. This paper reviews the factors hindering progress on the agreement and suggests possible solutions. | Alice Hughes Xiaoli Shen Richard Corlett Lin Li Maofang Luo Stephen Woodley Yuanming Zhang Keping Ma | 2022 | Ecosystem Health and Sustainability2022,8,1: | 1

Activation of PXR causes drug interactions with Paxlovid in transgenic mice显示文摘Paxlovid is a nirmatrelvir(NMV)and ritonavir(RTV)co-packaged medication used for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).The active component of Paxlovid is NMV and RTV is a pharmacokinetic booster. Our work aimed to investigate the drug/herb-drug interactions associated with Paxlovid and provide mechanism-based guidance for the clinical use of Paxlovid.By using recombinant human cytochrome P450s(CYPs),we confirmed that CYP3A4 and 3A5 are the major enzymes responsible for NMV metabolism. The role of CYP3A in Paxlovid metabolism were further verified in Cyp3a-null mice, which showed that the deficiency of CYP3A significantly suppressed the metabolism of NMV and RTV.Pregnane X receptor(PXR)is a ligand-dependent transcription factor that upregulates CYP3A4/5 expression. We next explored the impact of drug-and herb-mediated PXR activation on Paxlovid metabolism in a transgenic mouse model expressing human PXR and CYP3A4/5.We found that PXR activation increased CYP3A4/5 expression, accelerated NMV metabolism, and reduced the systemic exposure of NMV.In summary, our work demonstrated that PXR activation can cause drug interactions with Paxlovid, suggesting that PXR-activating drugs and herbs should be used cautiously in COVID-19 patients receiving Paxlovid. | Saifei Lei Alice Guo Jie Lu Qian Qi Aaron S.Devanathan Junjie Zhu Xiaochao Ma | 2023 | Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2023,13,11: | 0
Decline in subarachnoid haemorrhage volumes associated with the first wave of the COVID- 19 pandemic显示文摘Background During the COVID-19 pandemic, decreased volumes of stroke admissions and mechanical thrombectomy were reported. The study’s objective was to examine whether subarachnoid haemorrhage(SAH)hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm coiling interventions demonstrated similar declines. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional,retrospective,observational study across 6 continents,37 countries and 140 comprehensive stroke centres.Patients with the diagnosis of SAH,aneurysmal SAH,ruptured aneurysm coiling interventions and COVID-19 were identified by prospective aneurysm databases or by International Classification of Diseases,10th Revision, codes. The 3-month cumulative volume, monthly volumes for SAH hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm coiling procedures were compared for the period before(1 year and immediately before)and during the pandemic, defined as 1 March-31 May 2020.The prior 1-year control period(1 March-31 May 2019)was obtained to account for seasonal variation.Findings There was a significant decline in SAH hospitalisations, with 2044 admissions in the 3 months immediately before and 1585 admissions during the pandemic, representing a relative decline of 22.5%(95%CI−24.3%to−20.7%,p<0.0001).Embolisation of ruptured aneurysms declined with 1170-1035 procedures, respectively, representing an 11.5%(95%CI−13.5%to−9.8%,p=0.002)relative drop.Subgroup analysis was noted for aneurysmal SAH hospitalisation decline from 834 to 626 hospitalisations,a 24.9%relative decline(95%CI−28.0%to−22.1%,p<0.0001).A relative increase in ruptured aneurysm coiling was noted in low coiling volume hospitals of 41.1%(95%CI 32.3%to 50.6%,p=0.008)despite a decrease in SAH admissions in this tertile.Interpretation There was a relative decrease in the volume of SAH hospitalisations, aneurysmal SAH hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm embolisations during the COVID-19 pandemic. These findings in SAH are consistent with a decrease in other emergencies, such as stroke and myocardial infarction. | Thanh N Nguyen Diogo C Haussen Muhammad M Qureshi Hiroshi | 11 | Patterns of floristic inventory and plant collections in Myanmar显示文摘Myanmar is one of the most biodiverse countries in the Asia-Pacific region due to a wide range of climatic and environmental heterogeneity.Floristic diversity in Myanmar is largely unknown, resulting in a lack of comprehensive conservation plans. We developed a database of higher plants in Myanmar derived from herbarium specimens and literature sources, and analyzed patterns of diversity inventories and collection inconsistencies, aiming to provide a baseline floristic data of Myanmar and act as a guide for future research efforts. We collected 1,329,354 records of 16,218 taxa. Results show that the collection densities at the township level was variable, with 5% of townships having no floristic collections. No ecoregion had an average collection density of greater than 1 specimen/km2and the lowest collection density was found in the Kayah-Karen Montane Rainforests, which covered 8% of Myanmar’s total area. The highest sampling densities were found in Mandalay Region,Chin State, and Yangon Region.Despite floristic collections over the past three centuries, knowledge of the distribution of the vast majority of plant taxa remained limited, particularly for gymnosperms, pteridophytes, and bryophytes.More botanical surveys and further analyses are needed to better describe Myanmar’s floristic diversity. An important strategy to promote knowledge of the biodiversity patterns in Myanmar is to improve the collection and digitalization of specimens and to strengthen cooperation among countries. | Thant Sin Aung Alice CHughes Phyo Kay Khine Bo Liu Xiao-Li Shen Ke-Ping Ma | 2023 | Plant Diversity2023,45,3: | 0
