| 1 | Genetically confirmed Wilson disease in a 9-month old boy with elevations of aminotransferases显示文摘Wilson disease (WD) is an autosomal recessive disorder of copper transport caused by alteration of the adenosine triphosphatase 7B gene. It is rare to diagnose WD below the age of three years. Molecular genetic testing is one of the most important diagnostic methods and may confirm the diagnosis in equivocal cases. We report a case of a 9-mo old boy with WD who presented as chronic hepatitis. | 2 | Clinicopathological features and prognosis of combined hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma after surgery显示文摘BACKGROUND: Combined hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma (cH CC-CC) is a rare subtype of primary liver cancer consisting of both hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)and cholangiocarcinoma (CC). Because of the rarity of this tumor its feature is poorly understood. The present study aimed to evaluate the clinicopathological features and long-term prognosis of patients with cH CC-CC after surgery and to compare with those of the patients with stage-matched HCC and CC.METHODS: The clinicopathological features of the patients who underwent surgery for cH CC-CC at our center during the period of 2001-2010 were retrospectively analyzed and compared with those of stage-matched HCC and CC patients Cancer staging was performed according to the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual (6th ed.). Overall survival and disease-free survival were compared among the groups and prognostic factors of cH CC-CC were evaluated.RESULTS: Significant differences were observed in clinico pathological features among 42 patients with cH CC-CC, 90patients with HCC and 45 patients with CC. Similar to HCC patients, cH CC-CC patients had frequent hepatitis B virus antigen positivity, microscopic vessel invasion, cirrhosis and high level of serum alpha-fetoprotein. Similar to CC patients, cH CC-CC patients showed increased bile duct invasion and decreased capsule. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival and disease free survival of patients with cH CC-CC were not significantly different from those with stage-matched patients with CC;but significantly poorer than those with HCC. In subanalysis of patients with stage II, the overall survival in patients with cH CC-CC or CC was significantly poorer than that in patients , with HCC. We did not find the difference in patients with other stages. | 3 | Wetting Characteristics of Insect Wing Surfaces显示文摘Biological tiny structures have been observed on many kinds of surfaces such as lotus leaves,which have an effect on thecoloration of Morpho butterflies and enhance the hydrophobicity of natural surfaces.We investigated the micro-scale andnano-scale structures on the wing surfaces of insects and found that the hierarchical multiple roughness structures help in enhancingthe hydrophobicity.After examining 10 orders and 24 species of flying Pterygotan insects,we found that micro-scaleand nano-scale structures typically exist on both the upper and lower wing surfaces of flying insects.The tiny structures such asdenticle or setae on the insect wings enhance the hydrophobicity,thereby enabling the wings to be cleaned more easily.And thehydrophobic insect wings undergo a transition from Cassie to Wenzel states at pitch/size ratio of about 20.In order to examinethe wetting characteristics on a rough surface,a biomimetic surface with micro-scale pillars is fabricated on a silicon wafer,which exhibits the same behavior as the insect wing,with the Cassie-Wenzel transition occurring consistently around apitch/width value of 20. | Doyoung Byun Jongin Hong Saputra Jin Hwan Ko Young Jong Lee Hoon Cheol Park Bong-Kyu Byun Jennifer R.Lukes | 2009 | Journal of Bionic Engineering2009，6，1： | 9 |
| 4 | Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-delta agonist ameliorated inflammasome activation in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the inflammasome activation and the effect of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors(PPAR)-δ agonist treatment in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) models.METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice were classified according to control or high fat diet(HFD) with or without PPAR-δ agonist(GW) over period of 12 wk [control, HFD, HFD + lipopolysaccharide(LPS), HFD + LPS + GW group]. Hep G2 cells were exposed to palmitic acid(PA) and/or LPS in the absence or presence of GW.RESULTS: HFD caused glucose intolerance and hepatic steatosis. In mice fed an HFD with LPS, caspase-1 and interleukin(IL)-1β in the liver were significantly increased. Treatment with GW ameliorated the steatosis and inhibited overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. In Hep G2 cells, PA and LPS treatment markedly increased m RNA of several nucleotide-binding andoligomerization domain-like receptor family members(NLRP3, NLRP6, and NLRP10), caspase-1 and IL-1β. PA and LPS also exaggerated reactive oxygen species production. All of the above effects of PA and LPS were reduced by GW. GW also enhanced the phosphorylation of AMPK-α.CONCLUSION: PPAR-δ agonist reduces fatty acidinduced inflammation and steatosis by suppressing inflammasome activation.
