4NUMERICAL MODELING OF HEAVY METAL POLLUTANT TRANSPORT-TRANSFORMATION IN FLUVIAL RIVERS:A REVIEW显示文摘A detailed discussion of existing three kinds of mathematical models of heavy metal pollutant transport-transformation in fluvial rivers is presented, with an emphasis on the mathematical model of heavy metal pollutant transport-transformation dynamics. The imperfection of two kinds of mathematical models, that is, mathematical model of chemical thermodynamic equilibrium and that of chemical reaction kinetics, and the shortcoming of existing mathematical models of heavy metal pollutant transport-transformation dynamics are pointed out. Furthermore, the structure of mathematical model of heavy metal pollutant transport-transformation dynamics in fluvial rivers is suggested. 6Temporal and spatial distribution of dam failure events in China显示文摘Reservoirs play a vital role in economic development and flood control. Nevertheless, both human and natural factors may lead to dam failures with catastrophic consequences. Analyzing the data of dam failure events from 1954 to 2003 and using the method of energy spectrum analysis, this paper studies the periodicity of dam failures. The rate of failure of different dam ages is analyzed. The climate is the main factor affecting the rate of dam failure. Climate diagrams are used to analyze the spatial distribution of dam failure events in China. High rate of dam failure occurs with 25-year and 12.5-year periods. The distribution of the percentage of dam failure shows an L-shape as a function of service age. The first 5 years of operation is known as the 'infant period', during which, the probability of dam failure is much higher than during any other periods. The failure rate in areas near or north to the 400 mm annual isopluvial line is notably higher than other areas. 11Application of Piezoelectric Actuator and Compliant Structures to Achieve Flapping Wing Motion for a MAV显示文摘Micro Aerial Vehicles(MAVs) are the smallest artificial aircraft.Most of the flapping wings MAVs are powered by electric motors of various capacities.We report in this paper the application of piezoelectric actuators as power system for a flapping wing MAV using a compliant displacement amplification mechanism.The actuator used for this application is a pre-stressed cut piece of TH-7R type Thunder actuator.A two-bar compliant mechanism with two flexures has been developed to convert the linear displacement into angular movement and amplification.The specimens were made from carbon fiber links and nylon flexures.We also proposed to use the product of frequency(F) and tip displacement(D), F * D as a criteria for the characterization of an amplifying mechanism.The best specimen according to this criterion is obtained for a 5mm length flexure specimen made of three layers of nylon.The F*D value obtained for this specimen was(0.58) Hz.m.ANSYS finite element analysis results for different flexural thickness and lengths were obtained and have been compared to the experimental results.The effect of both the thickness and length of the flexure on a particular arrangement has been discussed.Kranti. 13MECHANICS OF RELAXING SiGe ISLANDS ON A VISCOUS GLASS显示文摘A process has been developed recently to fabricate a structure com-prising,from top to bottom,a SiGe thin film,a glass layer,and a Si wafer.TheSiGe film is a perfect crystal,and is under biaxial compression.The SiGe film ispatterned into islands.On annealing,the glass flows and the islands relax.Theresulting strain-free islands are used as substrates,to grow epitaxial optoelectronicdevices.This article describes a series of studies on the annealing process,combiningexperiment and theory.A small island relaxes by expansion,starting at the edgesand diffusing to the center.A large island wrinkles before the expansion reaches thecenter.After some time,the wrinkles either disappear,or cause the island to fracture.We model the island as an elastic plate,and the glass layer as a viscous liquid.Thestrains in the islands are measured by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy,andthe wrinkle amplitudes by atomic force microscope.The data are compared with thetheoretical predictions.We determine the conditions under which the islands relax byexpansion without significant wrinkling,and demonstrate that a cap layer suppresseswrinkles,relaxing a large island crack-free.R.
