| 8 | Is the filamentary dark cloud GF 6 a star forming region?--Stability analysis and infrared properties显示文摘We present the results of mapping observations and stability analyses toward the filamentary dark cloud GF 6. We investigate the internal structures of a typical filamentary dark cloud GF 6 to know whether the filamentary dark cloud will form stars. We perform radio observations with both ^(12)CO(J =1–0) and ^(13)CO(J =1–0) emission lines to examine the mass distribution and its evolutionary status.The ^(13)CO gas column density map shows eight subclumps in the GF 6 region with sizes on a sub-pc scale. The resulting local thermodynamic equilibrium masses of all the subclumps are too low to form stars against the turbulent dissipation. We also investigate the properties of embedded infrared point sources to know whether they are newly formed stars. The infrared properties also indicate that these point sources are not related to star forming activities associated with GF 6. | 9 | Mechanical strength and corrosion resistance of Al-additive friction stir welded AZ31B joints显示文摘Compared to other structural alloys,magnesium alloys have a relatively poor corrosion resistance and low mechanical strength,which can be further deteriorated when these alloys are subjected to joining processes using the existing joining methods.Herein,we propose for the first time an additive friction stir-welding(AFSW)using fine Al powder as an additive to improve the mechanical strength as well as corrosion resistance of AZ31B weld joints.AFSW is a solid-state welding method of forming a high-Al AZ31B joint via an in-situ reaction between pure Al powders filled in a machined groove and the AZ31B matrix.To optimize the process parameters,AFSW was performed under different rotational and transverse speeds,and number of passes,using tools with a square or screw pin.In particular,to fabricate a weld zone,where the Al was homogenously dispersed,the effects of the groove shape were investigated using three types of grooves:surface one-line groove,surface-symmetric grooves,and inserted symmetric grooves.The homogenous and defect-less AFS-welded AZ31B joint was successfully fabricated with the following optimal parameters:1400 rpm,25 mm/min,four passes,inserted symmetric grooves,and the tool with a square pin.The AFSW fully dissolved the additive Al intoα-Mg and in-situ precipitated Mg_(17)Al_(12)particles,which was confirmed via scanning electron microscopy,transmission electron microscope,and X-ray diffraction analyses.The microhardness,joint efficiency,and elongation at the fracture point of the AFS-welded AZ31B joint were 80 HV,101%,and 8.9%,respectively.These values are higher than those obtained for the FS-welded AZ31 joint in previous studies.The corrosion resistance of the AFS-welded AZ31B joint,evaluated via hydrogen evolution measurements and potentiodynamic polarization tests,was enhanced to 55%relative to the FS-welded AZ31B joint. | Jae-Yeon Kim Eun-Woo Kim Dong-O Kim Eun-Kyo Ju Ji-Eun Lee Jaeheon Lee Jai-Won Byeon | 2023 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2023,11,5: | 0 |

| 11 | Marker-Based,3-D Adaptive Cartesian Grid Method for Multiphase Flow Around Irregular Geometries显示文摘Computational simulations of multiphase flow are challenging because many practical applications require adequate resolution of not only interfacial physics associated with moving boundaries with possible topological changes,but also around three-dimensional,irregular solid geometries.In this paper,we highlight recent efforts made in simulating multiphase fluid dynamics around complex geometries,based on an Eulerian-Lagrangian framework.The approach uses two independent but related grid layouts to track the interfacial and solid boundary conditions,and is capable of capturing interfacial as well as multiphase dynamics.In particular,the stationary Cartesian grid with time dependent,local adaptive refinement is utilized to handle the computation of the transport equations,while the interface shape and movement are treated by marker-based triangulated surface meshes which freely move and interact with the Cartesian grid.The markers are also used to identify the location of solid boundaries and enforce the no-slip condition there.Issues related to the contact line treatment,topological changes of multiphase fronts during merger or breakup of objects,and necessary data structures and solution techniques are also highlighted.Selected test cases including spacecraft fuel tank flow management and liquid plug flow dynamics are presented. | Eray Uzgoren Jaeheon Sim Wei Shyy | 2009 | Communications in Computational Physics2009,5,1: | 0 |
| 12 | Adsorption characteristics of Cd(Ⅱ) and Ni(Ⅱ) from aqueous solution using succinylated hay显示文摘An environmentally friendly organic biosorbent was fabricated using hay by succinylation. Metallic cation adsorption tests were performed using synthetic nickel(Ⅱ) and cadmium(Ⅱ) solutions to simulate heavy-metal recovery from aqueous solution. The adsorption efficiency was greater than 98% for both cadmium and nickel ions when the biosorbent concentration was 5.0 g/L and the initial metal concentrations were 50 mg/L. The surface of the biosorbent was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to investigate the changes in the surface functional groups. The functional groups changed according to the surface treatment, resulting in an effective biosorbent. The kinetics of the metals adsorption revealed that the reactions are pseudo-second order, and the adsorption isotherm well followed the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities predicted by the Langmuir model were 75.19 mg/g and 57.77 mg/g for cadmium and nickel, respectively. The fabricated biosorbent was regenerated using Na Cl multiple times, with 2.1% for Cd and 4.0% for Ni in adsorption capacity after three regeneration cycles. | 13 | Adaptive thermo-fluid moving boundary computations for interfacial dynamics显示文摘In this study,we present adaptive moving boundary computation technique with parallel implementation on a distributed memory multi-processor system for large scale thermo-fluid and interfacial flow computations.The solver utilizes Eulerian-Lagrangian method to track moving(Lagrangian) interfaces explicitly on the stationary(Eulerian) Cartesian grid where the flow fields are computed.We address the domain decomposition strategies of Eulerian-Lagrangian method by illustrating its intricate complexity of the computation involved on two different spaces interactively and consequently,and then propose a trade-off approach aiming for parallel scalability.Spatial domain decomposition is adopted for both Eulerian and Lagrangian domain due to easy load balancing and data locality for minimum communication between processors.In addition,parallel cell-based unstructured adaptive mesh refinement(AMR) technique is implemented for the flexible local refinement and even-distributed computational workload among processors.Selected cases are presented to highlight the computational capabilities,including Faraday type interfacial waves with capillary and gravitational forcing,flows around varied geometric configurations and induced by boundary conditions and/or body forces,and thermo-fluid dynamics with phase change.With the aid of the present techniques,large scale challenging moving boundary problems can be effectively addressed. | Chih-Kuang Kuan Jaeheon Sim Wei Shyy | 2012 | Acta Mechanica Sinica2012,28,4: | 0 |
