1A cross-sectional study on compliance with topical glaucoma medication and its associated socioeconomic burden for a Chinese population显示文摘AIM: To estimate the overall drug compliance for local Chinese glaucoma patients on long-term topical treatment.METHODS: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study.Fifty-seven primary glaucoma patients from the subspecialty clinic of a publicly-funded tertiary care hospital in Hong Kong completed a questionnaire on compliance with topical glaucoma medication,attitude towards glaucoma and therapy and vision related quality of life.Noncompliance was defined as reporting missing more than or equal to 10% of the prescribed topical glaucoma medication during the 2wk immediately prior to the consultation.Relationships between noncompliance and demographics,attitude,disease and treatment status was studied.Cost was estimated with quality of life and direct medical cost involved with noncompliance.Multivariable logistic regression on noncompliance was performed on selected factors.RESULTS: Compliance was calculated as 75%(95% CI: 64%-87%) among 57 subjects(mean age 69 y,female 51%).No statistical significant relationship was established between noncompliance and any single factors or outcomes.Age(P=0.048) and forgetfulness(P=0.064) were found to be marginally significant predictive factors on noncompliance in multivariable logistic regression.Noncompliance might be related(P=0.130) to poorer self-rated vision-associated quality of life.The societal cost of noncompliance was estimated to be over 2510 life-years and US$ 3.7 million territory-wide.CONCLUSION: The compliance of Chinese glaucoma patients in Hong Kong is comparable to other parts in the world,and carries detrimental impacts on individual and societal levels.Age and forgetfulness are two possible independent predictors for noncompliance.Man-Hin Lui Jason Chun Ho Lam Yi Lee Kwong Tak Siu Wong Pak Long Cheung Sherri Shun Yan Lai Pak Lun Yuen Wai Yiu Lam Ho Yan Chan Yiu Fai Wong Jimmy Shiu Ming Lai Kendrick Co Shih 2017International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2017,10,2:5
2Unintended targeting of Dmp1-Cre reveals a critical role for Bmpr1a signaling in the gastrointestinal mesenchyme of adult mice显示文摘Cre/lox P technology has been widely used to study cell type-specific functions of genes. Proper interpretation of such data critically depends on a clear understanding of the tissue specificity of Cre expression. The Dmp1-Cre mouse, expressing Cre from a 14-kb DNA fragment of the mouse Dmp1 gene, has become a common tool for studying gene function in osteocytes, but the presumed cell specificity is yet to be fully established. By using the Ai9 reporter line that expresses a red fluorescent protein upon Cre recombination, we find that in2-month-old mice, Dmp1-Cre targets not only osteocytes within the bone matrix but also osteoblasts on the bone surface and preosteoblasts at the metaphyseal chondro-osseous junction. In the bone marrow, Cre activity is evident in certain stromal cells adjacent to the blood vessels, but not in adipocytes. Outside the skeleton, Dmp1-Cre marks not only the skeletal muscle fibers, certain cells in the cerebellum and the hindbrain but also gastric and intestinal mesenchymal cells that express Pdgfra. Confirming the utility of Dmp1-Cre in the gastrointestinal mesenchyme, deletion of Bmpr1 a with Dmp1-Cre causes numerous large polyps along the gastrointestinal tract, consistent with prior work involving inhibition of BMP signaling.Thus, caution needs to be exercised when using Dmp1-Cre because it targets not only the osteoblast lineage at an earlier stage than previously appreciated, but also a number of non-skeletal cell types.Joohyun Lim Joseph Burclaff Guangxu He Jason C Mills Fanxin Long 2017Bone Research2017,5,1:4
3Direct demonstration of carrier distribution and recombination within step-bunched UV-LEDs显示文摘AlGaN-based solid state UV emitters have many advantages over conventional UV sources. However, UV-LEDs still suffer from numerous challenges, including low quantum efficiency compared to their blue LED counterparts. One of the inherent reasons is a lack of carrier localization effect inside fully miscible AlGaN alloys. In the pursuit of phase separation and carrier localization inside the active region of AlGaN UV-LED, utilization of highly misoriented substrates proves to be useful, yet the carrier distribution and recombination mechanism in such structures has seldom been reported. In this paper, a UV-LED with step-bunched surface morphology was designed and fabricated, and the internal mechanism of high internal quantum efficiency was studied in detail. The correlation between microscale current distribution and surface morphology was provided, directly demonstrating that current prefers to flow through the step edges of the epitaxial layers. Experimental results were further supported by numerical simulation. It was found that efficient radiative recombination centers were formed in the inclined quantum well regions. A schematic three-dimensional energy band structure of the multiple quantum wells(MQWs) across the step was proposed and helps in further understanding the luminescence behavior of LEDs grown on misoriented substrates. 5Experimental quantum simulation of Avian Compass in a nuclear magnetic resonance system显示文摘Avian magnetoreception is the capacity for avians to sense the direction of the Earth's magnetic field. Discovered more than forty years ago, it has attracted intensive studies over the years. One promising model for describing this capacity in avians is the widely used reference-and-probe model where radical pairs within the eyes of bird combines to form singlet and triplet quantum states.The yield depends on the angle between the Earth's magnetic field and the molecules' axis, hence the relative value of yield of the singlet state or triplet state enables avians to sense the direction. Here we report the experimental demonstration of avian magnetoreception in a nuclear magnetic resonance quantum information processor. 16Multi-step in situ interface modification method for emission enhancement in semipolar deep-ultraviolet light emitting diodes显示文摘SemipolarⅢ-nitrides have attracted increasing attention in applications of optoelectronic devices due to the much reduced polarization field.A high-quality semipolar AlN template is the building block of semipolar AlGaN-based deep-ultraviolet light emitting diodes(DUV LEDs),and thus deserves special attention.In this work,a multi-step in situ interface modification technique is developed for the first time,to our knowledge,to achieve high-quality semipolar AlN templates.The stacking faults were efficiently blocked due to the modification of atomic configurations at the related interfaces.Coherently regrown AlGaN layers were obtained on the in situ treated AlN template,and stacking faults were eliminated in the post-grown AlGaN layers.The strains between AlGaN layers were relaxed through a dislocation glide in the basal plane and misfit dislocations at the heterointerfaces.In contrast,high-temperature ex situ annealing shows great improvement in defect annihilation,yet suffers from severe lattice distortion with strong compressive strain in the AlN template,which is unfavorable to the post-grown AlGaN layers.The strong enhancement of luminous intensity is achieved in in situ treated AlGaN DUV LEDs.The in situ interface modification technique proposed in this work is proven to be an efficient method for the preparation of high-quality semipolar Al N,showing great potential towards the realization of high-efficiency optoelectronic devices.LI CHEN JIE SUN WEI GUO JASON HOO WEI LIN HANGYANG CHEN HOUQIANG XU LONG YAN SHIPING GUO JUNYONG KANG JICHUN YE 2022Photonics Research2022,10,12:0
