Progress of Air Pollution Control in China and Its Challenges and Opportunities in the Ecological Civilization Era显示文摘China’s past economic growth has substantially relied on fossil fuels, causing serious air pollution issues.Decoupling economic growth and pollution has become the focus in developing ecological civilization in China. We have analyzed the three-decade progress of air pollution controls in China, highlighting a strategic transformation from emission control toward air quality management.Emission control of sulfur dioxide(SO2)resolved the deteriorating acid rain issue in China in 2007.Since 2013,control actions on multiple precursors and sectors have targeted the reduction of the concentration of fine particulate matter(PM2.5),marking a transition to an air-quality-oriented strategy.Increasing ozone(O3)pollution further requires O3 and PM2.5 integrated control strategies with an emphasis on their complex photochemical interactions.Fundamental improvement of air quality in China,as a key indicator for the success of ecological civilization construction, demands the deep de-carbonization of China’s energy system as well as more synergistic pathways to address air pollution and global climate change simultaneously. | Xi Lu Shaojun Zhang Jia Xing Yunjie Wang Wenhui Chen Dian Ding Ye Wu Shuxiao Wang Lei Duan Jiming Hao | 2020 | Engineering2020,6,12: | 24
Status quo of soil petroleum contamination and evolution of bioremediation显示文摘Along with the rapid development of oil industries internationally, petroleum prospecting and exploitation activities are growing intensively.Especially in China, with the fastest economic growth in the world and shortage of petroleum resources,we are leading the practices of petroleum deep exploitation.Obviously, the risk of damage to the natural environment from these activities is high.Oil contamination in soils and groundwater is becoming a big issue along with pesticide pollution, which makes organic pollution prevention and control (OPPC) much more complex. In this paper, based on recent research on oil-contaminated soil at home and abroad,we make comments on the remediation technologies for polluted soil, emphasizing bioremediation techniques and degradation mechanisms in order to push forward research into bound organic pollution prevention and control (OPPC),especially in China. | Du Weidong Wan Yunyang Zhong Ningning Fei Jiajia ZhangZhihuan Chen Lijun Hao Jiming | 2011 | Petroleum Science2011,8,4: | 19
Epidemiological and risk analysis of the H7N9 subtype influenza outbreak in China at its early stage显示文摘Dozens of human cases infected with H7N9 subtype avian influenza virus (AIV) have been confirmed in China since March, 2013. Distribution data of sexes, ages, professions and regions of the cases were analyzed in this report. The results showed that the elderly cases, especially the male elderly, were significantly more than expected, which is different from human cases of H5N1 avian influenza and human cases of the pandemic H1N1 influenza. The outbreak was rated as a Grade Ⅲ (severe) outbreak, and it would evolve into a Grade IV (very severe) outbreak soon, using a method reported previously. The H7N9 AIV will probably circulate in humans, birds and pigs for years. Moreover, with the driving force of natural selection, the virus will probably evolve into highly pathogenic AIV in birds, and into a deadly pandemic influenza virus in humans. Therefore, the H7N9 outbreak has been assumed severe, and it is likely to become very or extremely severe in the future, highlighting the emergent need of forceful scientific measures to eliminate any infected animal flocks. We also described two possible mild scenarios of the future evolution of the outbreak. | ZHUANG QingYe WANG SuChun WU MeiLi LIU Shuo JIANG WenMing HOU GuangYu LI JinPing WANG KaiCheng YU JianMin CHEN JiMing CHEN JiWang | 2013 | Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,26: | 18
Oxidative stress in neurodegenerative diseases显示文摘Reactive oxygen species are constantly produced in aerobic organisms as by-products of normal oxygen metabolism and include free radicals such as superoxide anion (O2-) and hydroxyl radical (OH-), and non-radical hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The mitochondrial respiratory chain and enzymatic reactions by various enzymes are endogenous sources of reactive oxygen species. Exogenous reactive oxygen species -inducing stressors include ionizing radiation, ultraviolet light, and divergent oxidizing chemicals. At low concentrations, reactive oxygen species serve as an important second messenger in cell signaling; however, at higher concentrations and long-term exposure, reactive oxygen species can damage cellular macromolecules such as DNA, proteins, and lipids, which leads to necrotic and apoptotic cell death. Oxidative stress is a condition of imbalance between reactive oxygen species formation and cellular antioxidant capacity due to enhanced ROS generation and/or dysfunction of the antioxidant system. Biochemical alterations in these macromolecular components can lead to various pathological conditions and human diseases, especially neurodegenerative diseases. Neurodegenerative diseases are morphologically featured by progressive cell loss in specific vulnerable neuronal cells, often associated with cytoskeletal protein aggregates forming inclusions in neurons and/or glial cells. Deposition of abnormal aggregated proteins and disruption of metal ions homeostasis are highly associated with oxidative stress. The main aim of this review is to present as much detailed information as possible that is available on various neurodegenerative disorders and their connection with oxidative stress. A variety of therapeutic strategies designed to address these pathological processes are also described. For the future therapeutic direction, one specific pathway that involves the transcription factor nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 is receiving considerable attention. | Xueping Chen Chunyan Guo Jiming Kong | 2012 | Neural Regeneration Research2012,7,5: | 12
Genetic Variation of the VP1 Gene of the Virulent Duck Hepatitis A Virus Type 1(DHAV-1) Isolates in Shandong Province of China显示文摘To investigate the relationship of the variation of virulence and the external capsid proteins of the pandemic duck hepatitis A virus type 1(DHAV-1) isolates, the virulence, cross neutralization assays and the complete sequence of the virion protein 1(VP1) gene of nine virulent DHAV-1 strains, which were isolated from infected ducklings with clinical symptoms in Shandong province of China in 2007-2008,were tested. The fifth generation duck embryo allantoic liquids of the 9 isolates were tested on 12-day-old duck embryos and on 7-day-old ducklings for the median embryonal lethal doses(ELD 50 s) and the median lethal doses(LD 50 s),respectively. The results showed that the ELD 50 s of embryonic duck eggs of the 9 DHAV-1 isolates were between 1.9 × 10 6 /mL to 1.44 × 10 7 /mL,while the LD 50 s were 2.39 × 10 5 /mL to 6.15 × 10 6 /mL.Cross-neutralization tests revealed that the 9 DHAV-1 isolates were completely neutralized by the standard serum and the hyperimmune sera against the 9 DHAV-1 isolates, respectively.Compared with other virulent, moderate virulent, attenuated vaccine and mild strains, the VP1 genes of the 9 strains shared 89.8%-99.7% similarity at the nucleotide level and 92.4%-99.6% at amino acid level with other DHAV-1 strains. There were three hypervariable regions at the C-terminus(aa 158-160,180-193 and 205-219) and other variable points in VP1 protein, but which didn't cause virulence of DHAV-1 change. | Jiming Gao Junhao Chen Xingkui Si Zhijing Xie Yanli Zhu Xingxiao Zhang Shujing Wang Shijin Jiang | 2012 | Virologica Sinica2012,27,4: | 10

Identification of salt-tolerance QTL in rice(Oryza sativa L.)显示文摘Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling salt-tolerance at the seedling stage in rice (Oryza sativa L.) were identified by interval mapping (SIM) and composite interval mapping (CIM) using a doubled haploid population ZJDH and its high resolution genetic linkage map. The population was derived from an inter-subspecific cross between an indica variety Zhaiyeqing8 (ZYQ8) and a japonica variety Jingxi17 (JX17). Analysis of survival days of seedlings treated with 0.7% NaCl revealed that a major salt-tolerance quantitative trait locus (QTL), Std, was present between markers RG612 and C131 on chromosome 1 when using both MAPMAKER/QTL 1.1 and PLABQTL 1.0 (SIM).Its allele which contributes to salt-tolerance was from ZYQ8. In addition, seven more QTLs which give additive effect on salt-tolerance are identified when using PLABQTL(CIM), and most of them were from JX17. | Jiming Gong Ping He Qian Qian Lishuang Shen Lihuang Zhu Shouyi Chen | 1999 | Chinese Science Bulletin1999,44,1: | 7

Kernel matrix learning with a general regularized risk functional criterion显示文摘Kernel-based methods work by embedding the data into a feature space and then searching linear hypothesis among the embedding data points. The performance is mostly affected by which kernel is used. A promising way is to learn the kernel from the data automatically. A general regularized risk functional (RRF) criterion for kernel matrix learning is proposed. Compared with the RRF criterion, general RRF criterion takes into account the geometric distributions of the embedding data points. It is proven that the distance between different geometric distributions can be estimated by their centroid distance in the reproducing kernel Hilbert space. Using this criterion for kernel matrix learning leads to a convex quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) problem. For several commonly used loss functions, their mathematical formulations are given. Experiment results on a collection of benchmark data sets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. | Chengqun Wang Jiming Chen Chonghai Hu Youxian Sun | 2010 | Journal of Systems Engineering and Electronics2010,21,1: | 3
Origin and future distribution of the new A (H1N1) influenza virus emerging in North America in 2009显示文摘The origin of the new A (H1N1) influenza virus recently emerging in North America is a hot controversial topic of significance in disease control and risk assessment. Some experts claimed that it was an unusually mongrelized mix of human, avian and swine influenza viruses, while some others concluded that it was totally a simple re-assortment hybrid of two lineages of swine influenza viruses. Here the phylogenetic diversity of the viral PB1,PA and PB2 gene sequences using online web servers, and the results suggest that all the 8 genetic segments of the new virus were possibly from two lineages of swine influenza viruses, and one of the lineage was a mongrelized mix of human, avian and swine influenza viruses emerging in the world approximately 10 years ago.Considering the recent epidemiological trends of the new virus,we believe it will spread more widely in the world and persist long in human populations. It also could spread among swine populations. The future wide spreading of the new virus may coincide the disappearance of a subtype of previous human influenza A virus. | CHEN JiMing SUN YingXue LIU Shuo JIANG WenMing CHEN Jie HOU GuangYu LI JinPing | 2009 | Chinese Science Bulletin2009,54,13: | 3
Performance optimization of grooved slippers for aero hydraulic pumps显示文摘A computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulation method based on 3-D Navier–Stokes equation and Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian(ALE) method is presented to analyze the grooved slipper performance of piston pump. The moving domain of grooved slipper is transformed into a fixed reference domain by the ALE method, which makes it convenient to take the effects of rotate speed, body force, temperature, and oil viscosity into account.A geometric model to express the complex structure, which covers the orifice of piston and slipper, vented groove and the oil film,is constructed.Corresponding to different oil film thicknesses calculated in light of hydrostatic equilibrium theory and boundary conditions,a set of simulations is conducted in COMSOL to analyze the pump characteristics and effects of geometry(groove width and radius, orifice size) on these characteristics.Furthermore, the mechanics and hydraulics analyses are employed to validate the CFD model, and there is an excellent agreement between simulation and analytical results. The simulation results show that the sealing land radius, orifice size and groove width all dramatically affect the slipper behavior, and an optimum tradeoff among these factors is conducive to optimizing the pump design. | Chen Juan Ma Jiming Li Jia Fu Yongling | 2016 | Chinese Journal of Aeronautics2016,29,3: | 3
Increased substitution rate in H5N1 avian influenza viruses during mass vaccination of poultry显示文摘As a means of heated debate, mass vaccination of poultry has been used in some countries to control H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza(HPAI),which remains of global economic and public health significance.Theoretically, mass vaccination can act as an evolutionary selective force facilitating the emergence of vaccine-resistant viruses, similar to that widespread use of antibiotics facilitates the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. To support the hypothesis, the substitution rates in the two subunits,HA1 and HA2,of the viral hemagglutinin gene, were calculated using a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo(MCMC) approach. It was found that the rate in the HA1 subunit, but not in the HA2 subunit, increased significantly during periods of mass vaccination(2005 2010 in China and 2003 2009 in Indonesia),in contrast to the periods when no mass vaccination programs took place(1996 2004 in China and 2004 2008 in Thailand).Because substitutions in the HA1 subunit rather than in the HA2 subunit can lead to vaccine-resistant viruses, the results support that mass vaccination programs facilitate the emergence of vaccine-resistant viruses, which,in turn, will render mass vaccination programs less effective. Therefore, caution must be taken when adopting mass vaccination as a long-term strategy to control HPAI. | WANG ZhaoGuo JIANG WenMing LIU Shuo HOU GuangYu LI JinPing WANG ZhiYu CHEN JiMing | 2012 | Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,19: | 3
Recent progress in Chinese fusion research based on superconducting tokamak configuration显示文摘Fusion energy is a promising source of clean energy, which could solve energy shortages and environmental pollution.Research into controlled fusion energy has been ongoing for over half a century.China has created a clear roadmap for magnetic confinement fusion development, where superconducting tokamaks will be used in commercial fusion reactors. The Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak(EAST)is the world’s first fully superconducting tokamak with upper and lower divertors, which aims at longpulse,steady-state,H-mode operation, and 101-s H-mode discharge had been achieved. In 2007,China joined the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor(ITER)and became one of its seven members.Thirteen procurement packages are undertaken by China, covering superconducting magnets, power supplies,plasma-facing components(PFCs),diagnostics, etc. To bridge the gap between the ITER and fusion demonstration power plants(DEMOs),China is planning to build the Chinese Fusion Engineering Testing Reactor(CFETR)to demonstrate related technologies and physics models. The engineering design of the CFETR was completed in 2020,and Comprehensive Research Facilities for Fusion Technology(CRAFT)are being constructed to explore the key technologies used in the CFETR. | Jinxing Zheng Jinggang Qin Kun Lu Min Xu Xuru Duan Guosheng Xu Jiansheng Hu Xianzu Gong Qing Zang Zhihong Liu Liang Wang Rui Ding Jiming Chen Pengyuan Li Lei Xue Lijun Cai Yuntao Song | 2022 | The Innovation2022,3,4: | 3

Seasonal variation in particle contribution and aerosol types in Shanghai based on satellite data from MODIS and CALIOP显示文摘Although the concentration of atmospheric particulate matter in Shanghai has declined in recent years, aerosols remain one of the major pollutants affecting air quality.Herein,spatio-seasonal variation in aerosol optical properties and aerosol types were studied overa 10-year period(2006-2015)in Shanghai,China, using satellite data from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS)and CloudAerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization(CALIOP).The average aerosol optical depth values for central urban and suburban areas of Shanghai were between 0.9 and 1.0.Clear seasonal variation in aerosol concentrations occurred, causing strongest attenuation in summer and weakest attenuation in autumn.Polluted dust, polluted continental(urban/industrial)and smoke aerosols were the main aerosol types.Desert dust aerosols occurred in the Shanghai area at higher altitudes(greater than 3 km)in spring, related to dusty weather in the north;while in winter, smoke aerosols occurred at high altitudes, related to haze pollution in the north. The aerosols detected in autumn were mainly from local sources, comprising polluted dust, polluted continental, and smoke aerosols.Aerosols in Shanghai clearly reflect both local and regional sources at different times. | Qiong Liu Xin Liu Tongqiang Liu Yanming Kang Yonghang Chen Jiming Li Hua Zhang | 2020 | Particuology2020,18,4: | 2
