| 5 | Delonix regia and Casuarina equisetifolia as passive biomonitors and as bioaccumulators of atmospheric trace metals显示文摘The suitability of two common and ubiquitously distributed and exotic ornamental plant species in Nigeria-Delonix regia and Casuarina equisetifolia as biomonitors and as effective bioaccumulators of atmospheric trace metals(Cd,Pb,Zn and Cu) has been evaluated.Bark and leaf samples from these plant species were collected in June and July 2006 at five locations in Benin City.Four of the sampling sites were in areas of high traffic density and commercial activities,the fifth site is a remote site,selected to act as a control and also to provide background information for the metals.The plant samples were collected and processed using standard procedures and trace metals were determined using atomic absorption spectrometer.The bark of the plants was able to bioaccumulate the trace metals,especially Pb which originates from anthropogenic contributions in the city.The Pb range of 20.00-70.00 μg/g measured for the bark samples of D.regia,exceeded the normal plant Pb concentration of 0.2-20.0 μg/g and most Pb data available in literature.The bark of the plants was observed to accumulate more metals compared to the leave,while D.regia was found to be slightly better than C.equisetifolia in trace metal uptake efficiency.Spatial variations in the distributions of Pb and Zn were significant(p < 0.05),and the continuous use of leaded fuel in Nigeria was identified as the predominant source of Pb in the atmosphere. | Emmanuel Ehiabhi Ukpebor Justina Ebehirieme Ukpebor Emmanuel Aigbokhan Idris Goji Alex Okiemute Onojeghuo Anthony Chinedum Okonkwo | 2010 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2010，22，7： | 2 |
| 6 | Evaluation of biodegradable electric conductive tube-guides and mesenchymal stem cells显示文摘AIM: To study the therapeutic effect of three tubeguides with electrical conductivity associated to mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) on neuro-muscular regeneration after neurotmesis.METHODS: Rats with 10-mm gap nerve injury were tested using polyvinyl alcohol(PVA), PVA-carbon nanotubes(CNTs) and MSCs, and PVA-polypyrrole(PPy). The regenerated nerves and tibialis anterior muscles were processed for stereological studies after 20 wk. The functional recovery was assessed serially for gait biomechanical analysis, by extensor postural thrust, sciatic functional index and static sciatic functionalindex(SSI), and by withdrawal reflex latency(WRL). In vitro studies included cytocompatibility, flow cytometry, reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and karyotype analysis of the MSCs. Histopathology of lung, liver, kidneys, and regional lymph nodes ensured the biomaterials biocompatibility. RESULTS: SSI remained negative throughout and independently from treatment. Differences between treted groups in the severity of changes in WRL existed, showing a faster regeneration for PVA-CNTs-MSCs(P < 0.05). At toe-off, less acute ankle joint angles were seen for PVA-CNTs-MSCs group(P = 0.051) suggesting improved ankle muscles function during the push off phase of the gait cycle. In PVA-PPy and PVA-CNTs groups, there was a 25% and 42% increase of average fiber area and a 13% and 21% increase of the 'minimal Feret's diameter' respectively. Stereological analysis disclosed a significantly(P < 0.05) increased myelin thickness(M), ratio myelin thickness/axon diameter(M/d) and ratio axon diameter/fiber diameter(d/D; g-ratio) in PVA-CNT-MSCs group(P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Results revealed that treatment with MSCs and PVA-CNTs tube-guides induced better nerve fiber regeneration. Functional and kinematics analysis revealed positive synergistic effects brought by MSCs and PVA-CNTs. | 7 | Endothelial parameters in central and peripheral cornea in patients wearing contact lenses显示文摘AIM: To measure the parameters of endothelium in the central and peripheral parts of the cornea and evaluate the influence of wearing the hard and soft contact lenses on the mentioned parameters.METHODS: A specular microscope was used to measure the corneal endothelium parameters in both eyes of 139 Caucasians(a total of 278). All participants were divided into three groups: soft lens wearers, hard lens wearers and a control group. Factors, such as age, smoking, types of lens material, duration of lens wear and lens air permeability were assessed to determine their impact on the morphometric parameters of the endothelium.RESULTS: A lower percentage of hexagon-like cells and higher cell variation than in other groups were determined in hard contact lens wearers. The difference in density of endotheliocytes between the groups was not observed. The measurements of the morphometric parameters in soft contact lens wearers did not depend neither on the duration of lens wear, nor on air permeability. | 20 | Epidemiological trends and geographic variation in hospital admissions for diverticulitis in the United States显示文摘AIM:To characterize the increasing incidence and geographic variation of acute diverticulitis.METHODS:Using the nationwide inpatient sample (NIS) we identified a cohort who had been admitted with diverticulitis between 1998 and 2005.We calculated age-,sex-,and region-specific rates of hospitalizations for diverticulitis over time.RESULTS:The age-adjusted hospitalization rate for diverticulitis increased from 61.8 per 100000 to 75.5 per 100 000 between 1998 and 2005,and increased similarly in both sexes.Diverticulitis-associated admissions were male-predominant in those younger than age 45 years but were female-predominant thereafter.Admission rates increased the most among those<45 years,while remaining unchanged for those≥65 years.By 2005,the majority of hospitalized patients were<65 years.Age-adjusted rates of diverticulitis-associated hospitalizations were lower in the West(50.4/100000) compared to the Northeast(77.7/100000),South (73.9/100000),and Midwest(71.0/100000).CONCLUSION:Diverticulitis-associated hospitalizations have steeply risen,especially in young adults.These epidemiological trends vary by geographic region and warrant further investigation into potential dietary and environmental etiologies. | Geoffrey C Nguyen Justina Sam Nitasha Anand | 2011 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2011，17，12： | 1 |
