| 1 | Clinicopathological and prognostic implications of endoglin (CD105) expression in hepatocellular carcinoma and its adjacent non-tumorous liver显示文摘AIM: The expression pattern of endoglin (CD105) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has not been reported so far. We hypothesized that CD105 could differentially highlight a subset of microvessels in HCC, and intratumoral microvessel density (IMVD) by CD105 immunostaining (IMVD-CD105) could provide better prognostic information than IMVD by CD34 immunostaining (IMVD-CD34).METHODS: Paraffin blocks of tumor and adjacent nontumorous liver tissues from 86 patients who underwent curative resection of HCC were used for this study. Serial sections were stained for CD105 and CD34, respectively,to highlight the microvessels. IMVD was counted according to a standard protocol.RESULTS: In the HCC tissues, CD105 was either negatively or positively stained only in a subset of microvessels. In contrast, CD34 showed positive and more extensive microvessel staining in all cases examined. However, in the adjacent non-tumorous liver sections, CD105 showed a diffuse pattern of microvessel staining in 20 of 86 cases,while CD34 showed negative or only focal staining of the sinusoids around portal area. Correlation with clinicopathological data demonstrated that lower scores of IMVD-CD105 were found in larger sized tumors [mean 41.4/0.74 mm2 (>5 cm tumor) vs 65.9/0.74 mm2(≤ 5 cm tumor), P = 0.043] and more aggressive tumors,as indicated by venous infiltration [36.8/0.74 mm2 (present)vs 64.2/0.74 mm2 (absent), P = 0.020], microsatellite nodules [35.1/0.74 mm2 (present) vs 65.9/0.74 mm2(absent), P = 0.012], and advanced TNM tumor stage [38.8/0.74 mm2 (stage 3 or 4) vs 68.3/0.74 mm2 (stage 1or 2), P = 0.014]. No prognostic significance was observed when median values were used as cut-off points using either IMVD-CD105 or IMVD-CD34. However, the presence of the diffuse pattern of CD105 expression in the adjacent non-tumorous liver tissues predicted a poorer disease-free survival (median 8.6 vs 21.5 mo, P = 0.026).CONCLUSION: Our data demonstrate that a lower IMVDCD105 is associated with larger and more aggressive tumors. In this study, IMVD-CD105 did not provide significant prognostic information. | 2 | N-polar InGaN/GaN nanowires: overcoming the efficiency cliff of red-emitting micro-LEDs显示文摘A high efficiency, high brightness, and robust micro or sub-microscale red light emitting diode(LED) is an essential, yet missing, component of the emerging virtual reality and future ultrahigh resolution mobile displays.We report, for the first time, to our knowledge, the demonstration of an N-polar In GaN/GaN nanowire submicroscale LED emitting in the red spectrum that can overcome the efficiency cliff of conventional red-emitting micro-LEDs. We show that the emission wavelengths of N-polar In GaN/GaN nanowires can be progressively shifted from yellow to orange and red, which is difficult to achieve for conventional In GaN quantum wells or Ga-polar nanowires. Significantly, the optical emission intensity can be enhanced by more than one order of magnitude by employing an in situ annealing process of the In GaN active region, suggesting significantly reduced defect formation. LEDs with lateral dimensions as small as ~0.75 μm, consisting of approximately five nanowires, were fabricated and characterized, which are the smallest red-emitting LEDs ever reported, to our knowledge. | 4 | Osteogenesis and angiogenesis of a bulk metallic glass for biomedical implants显示文摘Implantation is an essential issue in orthopedic surgery.Bulk metallic glasses(BMGs),as a kind of novel materials,attract lots of attentions in biological field owing to their comprehensive excellent properties.Here,we show that a Zr_(61)Ti_(2)Cu_(25)Al_(12)(at.%)BMG(Zr-based BMG)displays the best cytocompatibility,pronounced positive effects on cellular migration,and tube formation from in-vitro tests as compared to those of commercial-pure titanium and poly-ether-ether-ketone.The in-vivo micro-CT and histological evaluation demonstrate the Zr-based BMG can significantly promote a bone formation.Immunofluorescence tests and digital reconstructed radiographs manifest a stimulated effect on early blood vessel formation from the Zr-based BMG.Accordingly,the intimate connection and coupling effect between angiogenesis and osteogenesis must be effective during bone regeneration after implanting Zr-based BMG.Dynamic gait analysis in rats after implanting Zr-based BMG demonstrates a tendency to decrease the pain level during recovery,simultaneously,without abnormal ionic accumulation and inflammatory reactions.Considering suitable mechanical properties,we provide a realistic candidate of the Zr61Ti2Cu25Al12 BMG for biomedical applications. | K.Sun R.Fu X.W.Liu L.M.Xu G.Wang S.Y.Chen Q.J.Zhai S.Pauly | 2022 | Bioactive Materials2022,7,2: | 1 |

| 8 | Greedy nonlinear autoregression for multifidelity computer models at different scales显示文摘Although the popular multi-fidelity surrogate models,stochastic collocation and nonlinear autoregression have been applied successfully to multiple benchmark problems in different areas of science and engineering,they have certain limitations.We propose a uniform Bayesian framework that connects these two methods allowing us to combine the strengths of both.To this end,we introduce Greedy-NAR,a nonlinear Bayesian autoregressive model that can handle complex between-fidelity correlations and involves a sequential construction that allows for significant improvements in performance given a limited computational budget.The proposed enhanced nonlinear autoregressive method is applied to three benchmark problems that are typical of energy applications,namely molecular dynamics and computational fluid dynamics.The results indicate an increase in both prediction stability and accuracy when compared to those of the standard multi-fidelity autoregression implementations.The results also reveal the advantages over the stochastic collocation approach in terms of accuracy and computational cost.Generally speaking,the proposed enhancement provides a straightforward and easily implemented approach for boosting the accuracy and efficiency of concatenated structure multi-fidelity simulation methods,e.g.,the nonlinear autoregressive model,with a negligible additional computational cost. | W.Xing M.Razi R.M.Kirby K.Sun A.A.Shah | 2020 | Energy and AI2020,1,1: | 0 |
