1Biomineralized polymer matrix composites for bone tissue repair:a review显示文摘Bone defects caused by trauma, infection or bone tumor resection, are highly prevalent. A small number(5%–10%) of these injuries fail to heal due to non-union and require surgical intervention. Currently, the principal treatment options for these defects are autografts, allografts, xenografts or synthetic grafts. The main problems associated with these therapies include pain,infection and donor site morbidity. Bone tissue engineering is a diverse field that focuses on the regeneration of bone by combining cells, scaffolds, growth factors and dynamic forces. There have been many recent studies utilizing biomineralized polymer matrix composites which mimic the natural structure of bone. The principal focus of this review is on recent advances in the synthesis of various types of biomineralized polymer matrix composite. 2Social vocalizations of big-footed myotis(Myotis macrodactylus)during foraging显示文摘Acoustic signals play a crucial role in transmitting information and maintaining social stability in gregarious an­imals,especially in echolocating bats,which rely primarily on biological sonar for navigating in the dark.In the context of foraging without relying on tactile,visual or olfactory cues,acoustic signals convey information not only on food but also on ownership and defense of resources.However,studies on such information remain fragmentary.In the present study,we aim to document the social vocal repertoire of Myotis macrodactylus at natural foraging sites.Multiple acoustic analyses and spectrographic classification revealed a rich foraging vo­cal repertoire comprising 6 simple syllables and 2 composites.Discriminant function analyses associated with a subset-validation procedure provided an optimal method to spectrographically classify all recorded sounds into different syllable types.Multidimensional scaling of median values of multiple parameters further confirmed notable differences among these syllables in a 3-D space.In addition,Euclidean distance analysis showed that there were some spectral similarities between specific social vocal syllables and feeding buzzes,which implied a potential jamming role.Altogether,the data indicate that bats at foraging sites under natural conditions used variant social vocalizations with different functions in addition to echolocation calls,providing supporting evi­dence for further work on the function and vocal mechanisms of acoustic communication in mammals.Dongge GUO Bo LUO Kangkang ZHANG Muxun LIU Walter METZNER Ying LIU Jiang FENG 2019Integrative Zoology2019,14,5:1
3Macrophage membrane-biomimetic adhesive polycaprolactone nanocamptothecin for improving cancer-targeting efficiency and impairing metastasis显示文摘The recent remarkable success and safety of mRNA lipid nanoparticle technology for producing severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)vaccines has stimulated intensive efforts to expand nanoparticle strategies to treat various diseases.Numerous synthetic nanoparticles have been developed for pharmaceutical delivery and cancer treatment.However,only a limited number of nanotherapies have enter clinical trials or are clinically approved.Systemically administered nanotherapies are likely to be sequestered by host mononuclear phagocyte system(MPS),resulting in suboptimal pharmacokinetics and insufficient drug concentrations in tumors.Bioinspired drug-delivery formulations have emerged as an alternative approach to evade the MPS and show potential to improve drug therapeutic efficacy.Here we developed a biodegradable polymer-conjugated camptothecin prodrug encapsulated in the plasma membrane of lipopolysaccharide-stimulated macrophages.Polymer conjugation revived the parent camptothecin agent(e.g.,7-ethyl-10-hydroxy-camptothecin),enabling lipid nanoparticle encapsulation.Furthermore,macrophage membrane cloaking transformed the nonadhesive lipid nanoparticles into bioadhesive nanocamptothecin,increasing the cellular uptake and tumor-tropic effects of this biomimetic therapy.When tested in a preclinical murine model of breast cancer,macrophage-camouflaged nanocamptothecin exhibited a higher level of tumor accumulation than uncoated nanoparticles.Furthermore,intravenous administration of the therapy effectively suppressed tumor growth and the metastatic burden without causing systematic toxicity.Our study describes a combinatorial strategy that uses polymeric prodrug design and cell membrane cloaking to achieve therapeutics with high efficacy and low toxicity.This approach might also be generally applicable to formulate other therapeutic candidates that are not compatible or miscible with biomimetic delivery carriers.Kangkang Ying Yifeng Zhu Jianqin Wan Chenyue Zhan Yuchen Wang Binbin Xie Peirong Xu Hongming Pan Hangxiang Wang 2023Bioactive Materials2023,,2:1
4Separating overlapping bat calls with a bi-directional long short-term memory network显示文摘Acquiring clear acoustic signals is critical for the analysis of animal vocalizations.Bioacoustics studies commonly face the problem of overlapping signals,which can impede the structural identification of vocal units,but there is currently no satisfactory solution.This study presents a bi-directional long short-term memory network to separate overlapping echolocation-communication calls of 6 different bat species and reconstruct waveforms.The separation quality was evaluated using 7 temporal-spectrum parameters.All the echolocation pulses and syllables of communication calls in the overlapping signals were separated and parameter comparisons showed no significant difference and negligible deviation between the extracted and original calls.Clustering analysis was conducted with separated echolocation calls from each bat species to provide an example of practical application of the separated and reconstructed calls.The result of clustering analysis showed high corrected rand index(82.79%),suggesting the reconstructed waveforms could be reliably used for species classification.These results demonstrate a convenient and automated approach for separating overlapping calls.The study extends the application of deep neural networks to separate overlapping animal sounds.Kangkang ZHANG Tong LIU Shengjing SONG Xin ZHAO Shijun SUN Walter METZNER Jiang FENG Ying LIU 2022Integrative Zoology2022,17,5:0
