| 1 | Potential role of strike-slip faults in opening up the South China Sea显示文摘Radiometric dates of key rock units indicate that a remnant Late Mesozoic ocean of the Huatung Basin is still preserved today east of the South China Sea(SCS).We integrate regional geology with a Cretaceous oceanic basement in the vicinity of the Huatung Basin to reconstruct the Huatung Plate east of the Eurasian continent.Results of geophysical investigations,four expeditions of deep-sea drilling and a renaissance of regional geology allow us to propose a hypothesis that the mechanism responsible for the SCS opening was raised from strike-slip fault on the east.The hypothesis suggests that the SCS opening could highly relate to the strike-slip faults inherited from Late Mesozoic structures onshore–offshore the SE Cathaysia Block to develop rhombic-shaped extensional basins en echelon on the thinned Eurasian continental crust in the Early Cenozoic.It was followed by sinistral strike-slip movements along the boundary between the Eurasian Plate and the Huatung Plate driven by oblique subduction of the Huatung Plate to the northwest coupled with slab-pull force by southward subduction of the Proto-SCS to open up the triangle-shaped oceanic East Sub-basin in the Early Oligocene(33/34 Ma).The spreading ridge then propagated southwestward in the step-over segment between the Zhongnan-Lile and the Red River strike-slip fault systems to open the triangle-shaped oceanic Southwest Sub-basin by 23 Ma.The plate boundary fault was subsequently converted into the Manila Trench when the Eocene Sierra Madre arc of the Huatung Plate had moved from the south to its present latitude by the Middle Miocene. | Chi-Yue Huang Pinxian Wang Mengming Yu Chen-Feng You Char-Shine Liu Xixi Zhao Lei Shao Guangfa Zhong Graciano P.Yumul Jr | 2019 | National Science Review2019,6,5: | 16 |
| 2 | An electronic nose using a single graphene FET and machine learning for water, methanol, and ethanol显示文摘The poor gas selectivity problem has been a long-standing issue for miniaturized chemical-resistor gas sensors.The electronic nose(e-nose)was proposed in the 1980s to tackle the selectivity issue,but it required top-down chemical functionalization processes to deposit multiple functional materials.Here,we report a novel gas-sensing scheme using a single graphene field-effect transistor(GFET)and machine learning to realize gas selectivity under particular conditions by combining the unique properties of the GFET and e-nose concept.Instead of using multiple functional materials,the gas-sensing conductivity profiles of a GFET are recorded and decoupled into four distinctive physical properties and projected onto a feature space as 4D output vectors and classified to differentiated target gases by using machine-learning analyses.Our single-GFET approach coupled with trained pattern recognition algorithms was able to classify water,methanol,and ethanol vapors with high accuracy quantitatively when they were tested individually.Furthermore,the gas-sensing patterns of methanol were qualitatively distinguished from those of water vapor in a binary mixture condition,suggesting that the proposed scheme is capable of differentiating a gas from the realistic scenario of an ambient environment with background humidity.As such,this work offers a new class of gas-sensing schemes using a single GFET without multiple functional materials toward miniaturized e-noses. | Takeshi Hayasaka Albert Lin Vernalyn C.Copa Lorenzo P.Lopez Jr Regine A.Loberternos Laureen Ida M.Ballesteros Yoshihiro Kubota Yumeng Liu Arnel A.Salvador Liwei Lin | 2020 | Microsystems & Nanoengineering2020,6,1: | 2 |
| 3 | PM_(2.5)and water-soluble inorganic ion concentrations decreased faster in urban than rural areas in China显示文摘We investigated variations of PM_(2.5)and water-soluble inorganic ions chemical characteristics at nine urban and rural sites in China using ground-based observations.From 2015 to 2019,mean PM_(2.5)concentration across all sites decreased by 41.9μg/m~3with a decline of 46%at urban sites and 28%at rural sites,where secondary inorganic aerosol(SIAs)contributed to 21%(urban sites)and 17%(rural sites)of the decreased PM_(2.5).SIAs concentrations underwent a decline at urban locations,while sulfate(SO_(4)^(2–)),nitrate(NO_(3)^(–)),and ammonium(NH_(4)^(+))decreased by 49.5%,31.3%and 31.6%,respectively.However,only SO_(4)^(2–)decreased at rural sites,NO_(3)^(–)increased by 21%and NH_(4)^(+)decreased slightly.Those changes contributed to an overall SIAs increase in 2019.Higher molar ratios of NO_(3)^(–)to SO_(4)^(2–)and NH_(4)^(+)to SO_(4)^(2–)were observed at urban sites than rural sites,being highest in the heavily polluted days.Mean molar ratios of NH_(3)/NH_xwere higher in 2019 than 2015 at both urban and rural sites,implying increasing NH_xremained as free NH_(3).Our observations indicated a slower transition from sulfate-driven to nitrate-driven aerosol pollution and less efficient control of NO_(x)than SO_(2)related aerosol formation in rural regions than urban regions.Moreover,the common factor at urban and rural sites appears to be a combination of lower SO_(4)^(2–)levels and an increasing fraction of NO_(3)^(–)to PM_(2.5)under NH_(4)^(+)-rich conditions.Our findings imply that synchronous reduction in NO_(x)and NH_(3)emissions especially rural areas would be effective to mitigate NO_(3)^(–)-driven aerosol pollution. | Yangyang Zhang Aohan Tang Chen Wang Xin Ma Yunzhe Li Wen Xu Xiaoping Xia Aihua Zheng Wenqing Li Zengguo Fang Xiufen Zhao Xianlong Peng Yuping Zhang Jian Han Lijuan Zhang Jeffrey L.Collett Jr Xuejun Liu | 2022 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2022,34,12: | 2 |
