| 1 | Do anogenital gland secretionsof giant panda code for their sexual ability?显示文摘To test the hypothesis of whether ano- genital gland secretions (AGS) of giant panda code for their sexual ability, we collected AGS samples of 11 male (5 adult and 6 subadult) and 14 female (7 adult and 7 subadult) captive giant pandas (Ailuro- poda melanoleuca) from China Research and Con- servation Center for the Giant Panda at Wolong, Si- chuan, China from 1994 to 2002. The samples were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. The GC results showed that male and female pandas shared 20 constituents with equal capacity factors in the AGS. Further GC-MS analyses showed that there were a total of 95 compounds in the AGS. Nine constituents for the males and three for the females differed significantly in relative abundances between sexually active and inactive individuals, but no clear division between sexually active and inactive pandas by hierarchical cluster analyses on the relative abundances of a subset of 56 compounds. However, we were able to separate different age groups of male pandas by the constituents of AGS. 14 compounds were found sig- nificantly and negatively, and 8 compounds positively, correlated with pandas’ age by year. Our results suggest that the information contained in the AGS of panda might not code for pandas’ sexual ability but might for their age. | 2 | Male panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) urine contains kinship information显示文摘Chemical communication plays an important role in kin selection and mate choice in mammals. The covariance of odor-genes of rodents has been documented and kinship odor has been proposed and termed, yet little is known of the relationship between genetic relatedness and chemical composition of kinship odors. Giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) rely substantially on chemical communication to mediate their social interactions. To examine the relationship between genetic relatedness and compounds in the urine/anogenital gland secretions, we compared the similarities between genetic relatedness and the chemical profiles of anogenital gland secretions and urine via lineage construction and GC-MS (gas chromatography and mass spectrometry). We found that information about kinship odors was present only in the urine of male adults in the mating season but absent in the non-mating season. Adult females and all sub-adults did not have such kinship odors in either mating or non-mating season. Therefore, kinship odor in the panda was contingent on age, sex, and season. | 3 | RNAi-mediated suppression of the abscisic acid catabolism gene Os ABA8ox1 increases abscisic acid content and tolerance to saline–alkaline stress in rice(Oryza sativa L.)显示文摘Saline–alkaline(SA) stress is characterized by high salinity and high alkalinity(high p H), which severely inhibit plant growth and cause huge losses in crop yields worldwide. Here we show that a moderate elevation of endogenous abscisic acid(ABA) levels by RNAi-mediated suppression of Os ABA8 ox1(Os ABA8 ox1-kd), a key ABA catabolic gene, significantly increased tolerance to SA stress in rice plants. We produced Os ABA8 ox1-kd lines in two different japonica cultivars, Dongdao 4 and Nipponbare. Compared with nontransgenic control plants(WT), the Os ABA8 ox1-kd seedlings accumulated 25.9%–55.7% higher levels of endogenous ABA and exhibited reduced plasmalemma injury, ROS accumulation and Na;/K;ratio, and higher survival rates, under hydroponic alkaline conditions simulated by 10, 15, and 20 mmol L-1 of Na;CO;. In pot trials using SA field soils of different alkali levels(p H 7.59, 8.86, and 9.29), Os ABA8 ox1–kd plants showed markedly higher seedling survival rates and more vigorous plant growth, resulting in significantly higher yield components including panicle number(85.7%–128.6%), spikelets per panicle(36.9%–61.9%), branches(153.9%–236.7%), 1000–kernel weight(20.0%–28.6%), and percentage of filled spikelets(96.6%–1340.8%) at harvest time. | 4 | Experimental Gaussian Boson sampling显示文摘Gaussian Boson sampling(GBS) provides a highly efficient approach to make use of squeezed states from parametric down-conversion to solve a classically hard-to-solve sampling problem. The GBS protocol not only significantly enhances the photon generation probability, compared to standard Boson sampling with single photon Fock states, but also links to potential applications such as dense subgraph problems and molecular vibronic spectra. | 11 | Evaluation of maize root growth and genome-wide association studies of root traits in response to low nitrogen supply at seedling emergence显示文摘Nitrogen(N) deficiency is one of the main factors limiting maize(Zea mays L.) productivity. Genetic improvement of root traits could improve nitrogen use efficiency. An association panel of 461 maize inbred lines was assayed for root growth at seedling emergence under high-nitrate(HN, 5 mmol L^(-1))and low-nitrate(LN, 0.05 mmol L^(-1)) conditions. Twenty-one root traits and three shoot traits were measured. Under LN conditions, the root-to-shoot ratio, root dry weight, total root length, axial root length,and lateral root length on the primary root were all increased. Under LN conditions, the heritability of the plant traits ranged from 0.43 to 0.82, a range much wider than that of 0.27 to 0.55 observed under HN conditions. The panel was genotyped with 542,796 high-density single-nucleotide polymorphism(SNP) markers. Totally 328 significant SNP markers were identified using either mixed linear model(MLM) or general linear model analysis, with 34 detected by both methods. In the 100-kb intervals flanking these SNP markers, four candidate genes were identified. Under LN conditions, the protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase 2 gene was associated with total root surface area and the DELLA protein-encoding gene was associated with the length of the visible lateral root zone of the primary root. Under HN conditions, a histone deacetylase gene was associated with plant height. Under both LN and HN conditions, the gene encoding MA3 domain-containing protein was associated with the first whorl crown root number. | 12 | Effect of Wuda granule on gastrointestinal function recovery after laparoscopic intestinal resection:a randomized–controlled trial显示文摘Background Previous studies have suggested that the Wuda granule(WDG)could promote the recovery of gastrointestinal(GI)function after gynecologic abdominal surgery.This trial aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of WDG in the rapid recovery of GI function in patients after laparoscopic intestinal resection in the setting of enhanced recovery after surgery(ERAS)-based perioperative care.Methods We performed a randomized,double-blind,placebo-controlled pilot trial.Thirty patients who met the inclusion criteria were randomly assigned to either the WDG group or the placebo group in a 1:1 ratio.The patients received WDG or placebo twice a day in addition to ERAS-based perioperative care,starting on post-operative Day 1 until Day 3.The primary outcomes were time to first bowel movement and time to first tolerance of solid food.The secondary outcomes were time to first flatus,length of hospital stay(LOS),and post-operative ileus-related morbidity.Adverse events were also recorded.Results There were no statistically significant differences in baseline characteristics between the two groups.The median time to first bowel movement was significantly decreased in the WDG group compared with the control group(27.6 vs 50.1 h;P<0.001),but the median times to first flatus(22.9 vs 25.1 h;P>0.05)and LOS(5.0 vs 5.0 days;P>0.05)were not statistically different.The occurrence rates of post-operative nausea,vomiting,abdominal distension,and abdominal pain were similar in the two groups.No adverse events occurred in any patients.Conclusions The addition of WDG to ERAS post-operative care after laparoscopic intestinal resection can safely promote the rapid recovery of GI function. | Haiping Zeng Wei Wang Lixing Cao Yuyan Wu Wenwei Ouyang Dechang Diao Jin Wan Qicheng Chen Zhiqiang Chen | 2022 | Gastroenterology Report2022,10,1: | 1 |

| 20 | Intranasal glial heterotopia in an infant boy显示文摘Introduction:Nasal glial heterotopia is a rare congenital developmental disorder characterized by meningeal epithelium and/or glial components.Case presentation:A 2-month-old boy presented for treatment of a congenital mass in the right nasal cavity near the pharynx.The preoperative diagnosis was congenital intranasal neoplasm.Nasal endoscopic resection of the nasopharyngeal mass was performed under general anesthesia.Histological findings in the resected tissue supported a diagnosis of intranasal glial heterotopia.The surgical outcome was good and no surgical site infection occurred.During 1 year of follow-up,the patient did not exhibit recurrence of heterotopia or related symptoms.Conclusion:Transnasal endoscopic surgery is recommended for patients with intranasal glial heterotopia.Thorough preoperative imaging should be performed before glioma resection.The mass should be differentiated from encephalocele to prevent cerebrospinal fluid leakage and meningitis. | Wei Zhang Lixing Tang Wentong Ge | 2021 | Pediatric Investigation2021,5,1: | 0 |
