1Biosafety and biobanking: Current understanding and knowledge gaps显示文摘Infectious disease outbreaks, such as'Coronavirus disease 20190(COVID-19),can constitute major global health threats with far-reaching consequences. As outbreaks develop, the international scientific community must provide high-quality scientific research-ready biological samples to solve the existing clinical and epidemiological questions to better combat the pandemic.Such examples are provided by dedicated biobank facilities, the latter collecting increasingly high volumes of biological samples. However, the more significant concentrations of infectious or potentially infectious biological materials can create a safety risk. The current short report describes the first attempt to identify the published scientific works on biobanking and safety.Three broad thematic areas have been identified:the physical security relevant to staff and sample integrity, the data safety aspects, and the governance parameters relating to the previous two. While the current publications reflect a broad alignment with existing standards and best practices in the biobanking field, they also demonstrate an opportunity for further in-depth work on this field in the post-COVID-19 era.Julie Roux Maissa Zeghidi Stephanie Villar Zisis Kozlakidis 2021Biosafety and Health2021,3,5:2

3Neutron-gamma discrimination method based on blind source separation and machine learning显示文摘The discrimination of neutrons from gamma rays in a mixed radiation field is crucial in neutron detection tasks.Several approaches have been proposed to enhance the performance and accuracy of neutron-gamma discrimination. However, their performances are often associated with certain factors, such as experimental requirements and resulting mixed signals. The main purpose of this study is to achieve fast and accurate neutron-gamma discrimination without a priori information on the signal to be analyzed,as well as the experimental setup. Here,a novel method is proposed based on two concepts. The first method exploits the power of nonnegative tensor factorization(NTF)as a blind source separation method to extract the original components from the mixture signals recorded at the output of the stilbene scintillator detector. The second one is based on the principles of support vector machine(SVM)to identify and discriminate these components. In addition to these two main methods,we adopted the Mexican-hat function as a continuous wavelet transform to characterize the components extracted using the NTF model. The resulting scalograms are processed as colored images, which are segmented into two distinct classes using the Otsu thresholding method to extract the features of interest of the neutrons and gamma-ray components from the background noise. We subsequently used principal component analysis to select the most significant of these features wich are used in the training and testing datasets for SVM.Bias-variance analysis is used to optimize the SVM model by finding the optimal level of model complexity with the highest possible generalization performance. In this framework, the obtained results have verified a suitable bias–variance trade-off value. We achieved an operational SVM prediction model for neutron-gamma classification with a high true-positive rate. The accuracy and performance of the SVM based on the NTF was evaluated and validated by comparing it to the charge comparison method via figure of merit. The results indicate that the proposed approach has a superior discrimination quality(figure of merit of 2.20).Hanan Arahmane El-Mehdi Hamzaoui Yann Ben Maissa Rajaa Cherkaoui El Moursli 2021Nuclear Science and Techniques2021,32,2:2

9Assessment of hepatic fibrosis in pediatric cases with hepatitis C virus in Egypt显示文摘AIM: To assess hepatic fibrosis and factors associated with its progression in children with HCV infection. METHODS: At the Hepatology Unit,Cairo University Children's Hospital,a single liver biopsy was performed to 43 children with HCV infection after an informed consent between 1998-2004. Their mean age at liver biopsy was 8.67 ± 4.3 years. RESULTS: Among the 43 patients' biopsies,12 (27.9%) were having no fibrosis,20 (46.5%) mild fibrosis and 11 (25.6%) moderate to severe fibrosis. The median time for development of fibrosis was estimated to be 5.5 years. Developing fibrosis was significantly associated with shorter duration from first detected ALT elevation to biopsy (12 mo vs 1.2 mo,P = 0.015) and having higher levels of direct serum bilirubin (0.3 mg/dL vs 0.5 mg/dL,P = 0.048). No association was found between fibrosis stage and the presence of co-morbid conditions (P = 0.33). CONCLUSION: Hepatic fibrosis was present in 72.1% of children with HCV infection. The development of fibrosis was associated with higher levels of direct serum bilirubin. There was no significant association between fibrosis and age, duration of infection, risk factors,co-morbid conditions and most biochemical parameters.Manal A El-Hawary Mona S El-Raziky Gamal Esmat Hanan Soliman Amr Abouzied Maissa El-Raziky Wafaa El-Akel Rokaya El-Sayed Fatma Shebl Abdel Aziz Shaheen Hanaa El-Karaksy 2007World Journal of Gastroenterology2007,13,20:1

16Coinfection with hepatitis C virus and schistosomiasis:Fibrosis and treatment response显示文摘AIM:To assess whether schistosomiasis coinfection with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) influences hepatic fibrosis and pegylated-interferon/ribavirin (PEG-IFN/ RIB) therapy response. METHODS:This study was designed as a retrospective analysis of 3596 chronic HCV patients enrolled in the Egyptian National Program for HCV treatment with PEG-IFN/RIB. All patients underwent liver biopsy and anti-schistosomal antibodies testing prior to HCV treatment. The serology results were used to categorize the patients into group A (positive schistosomal serology) or group B (negative schistosomal serology). Patients in group A were given oral antischistosomal treatment(praziquantel, single dose) at four weeks prior to PEG-IFN/RIB. All patients received a 48-wk course of PEG-IFN (PEG-IFNα2a or PEG-IFNα2b)/RIB therapy. Clinical and laboratory follow-up examinations were carried out for 24 wk after cessation of therapy (to week 72). Correlations of positive schistosomal serology with fibrosis and treatment response were assessed by multiple regression analysis. RESULTS:Schistosomal antibody was positive in 27.3% of patients (15.9% females and 84.1% males). The patients in group A were older (P = 0.008) and had a higher proportion of males (P = 0.002) than the patients in group B. There was no significant association between fibrosis stage and positive schistosomal serology (P = 0.703). Early virological response was achieved in significantly more patients in group B than in group A (89.4% vs 86.5%, P = 0.015). However, significantly more patients in group A experienced breakthrough at week 24 than patients in group B (36.3% vs 32.3%, P = 0.024). End of treatment response was achieved in more patients in group B than in group A (62.0% vs 59.1%) but the difference did not reach statistical significance (P = 0.108). Sustained virological response occurred in significantly more patients in group B than in group A (37.6% vs 27.7%, P = 0.000). Multivariate logistic regression analysis of patient data at treatment weeks 48 and 72 showed that positive schistosomal serology was associated with failure of response to treatment at week 48 (OR = 1.3, P = 0.02) and at week 72 (OR = 1.7, P < 0.01). CONCLUSION:Positive schistosomal serology has no effect on fibrosis staging but is significantly associated with failure of response to HCV treatment despite antischistosomal therapy.Mahasen Abdel-Rahman Mohammad El-Sayed Maissa El Raziky Aisha Elsharkawy Wafaa El-Akel Hossam Ghoneim Hany Khattab Gamal Esmat 2013World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,17:1

20Novel potentiometric application for the determination of amprolium HCl in its single and combined dosage form and in chicken liver显示文摘Three novel amprolium HCl(AMP)-selective electrodes were investigated with 2-nitrophenyl octylether as a plasticiser in a polymeric matrix of polyvinyl chloride(PVC). Sensor I was fabricated using potassium tetrakis(4-chlorophenyl) borate(Tp ClPB) as a cationic exchanger without incorporation of an ionophore.Sensor Ⅱ used 2-hydroxy propyl β-cyclodextrin as an ionophore while sensor Ⅲ used p-tert-butylcalix[8]arene as an ionophore. The three proposed sensors showed Nernestian response slopes of 29.2±0.8,29.3±0.6 and 30.2±0.4 m V/decade over the concentration range from 10–6 to 10–2 mol L_(-1),respectively. The proposed sensors displayed useful analytical characteristics for the determination of AMP in bulk powder, different pharmaceutical formulations, and chicken liver and in the presence of ethopabate. The proposed method was validated according to ICH guidelines for its linearity, accuracy, precision and robustness.Mai A. Basha Mohamed K. Abd El-Rahman Lories I. Bebawy Maissa Y.
