1Functional and anatomical evaluation of the effect of nepafenac in prevention of macular edema after phacoemulsification in diabetic patients显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the effect of prophylactic administration of nepafenac in prevention of macular edema occurring in diabetic patients after phacoemulsification and to investigate the correlation between optical coherence tomography(OCT) foveal thickness and multifocal electroretinogram(MF-ERG) parameters.METHODS: The study included two groups. Group 1 included 50 diabetic patients with senile cataract(50 eyes, 30 females, 20 males, aged 55±7 y) received nepafenac 0.1% eye drop. Group 2 included another 50 diabetic patients with senile cataract(50 eyes, 22 female, 28 males, aged 53.8±8 y) did not receive nepafenac. All patients were followed up for 3 mo postoperatively. OCT and MF-ERG were done preoperative and at 1 wk, 1, 2 and 3 mo.RESULTS: The mean foveal thickness was statistically significantly lower in Group 1. Five eyes in Group 2 developed clinical cystoid macular oedema(CMO)(10%), and no patients in Group 1 developed central macular thickening more than 50 μm. There were insignificant differences in MF-ERG amplitudes and latencies between the two groups except in the five eyes that developed CMO, there statistically significant reduction of MF-ERG amplitude with increase in foveal thickness. CONCLUSION: Perioperative nepafenac reduces the incidence of CMO following uncomplicated phacoemulsification significantly. 2Migration of a biliary stent causing duodenal perforation and biliary peritonitis显示文摘Migration of endoscopically placed biliary stents is a well-recognized complication of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. Less than 1% of migrated stents however cause intestinal perforation. 4Parameters Affecting Energy Consumption for Producing High Carbon Ferromanganese in a Closed Submerged Arc Furnace显示文摘The power consumption is considered to be the most important factor affecting the production cost of ferromanganese alloy.Different parameters affecting the energy consumption for industrial production of high carbon ferromanganese HCFeMn were investigated in a closed submerged arc furnace.The analysis of industrial data revealed that the most energy-consumed factors were the direct reduction by solid carbon,Boudouard reaction,metal and slag formation,and decomposition of fluxing materials(limestone and dolomite).To reduce the energy consumption and minimize the energy losses in the production process of HCFeMn,it was recommended to use Mn blend with minimum Mn to Fe ratio of 6and lower SiO2content or higher basicity.The added coke must be adjusted according to the material balance to prevent the over-coke and to minimize the highly endothermic'Boudouard reaction'.In addition,it was recommended to work at basic slags with the ratio of(CaO+MgO)to SiO2equal to 1.0-1.2instead of much higher slag basicity.Furthermore,the mass losses had to be minimized through adjusting the handling and charging process and to take care of all metal produced.Azza Ahmed Hossam Halfa Mohamed K.El-Fawakhry Hoda El-Faramawy Mamdouh Eissa 2014Journal of Iron and Steel Research(International)2014,21,7:3
5Hypoglycemic and antioxidant activities of Caesalpinia ferrea Martius leaf extract in streptozotocininduced diabetic rats显示文摘Objective: To evaluate the antidiabetic and antioxidant ef ects of aqueous ethanolic extract of Caesalpinia ferrea(C. ferrea) leaf in normal and streptozotocin(STZ) induced diabetic rats.Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats divided into 6 groups of 6 rats each were assigned into diabetic and non-diabetic groups. Diabetes was induced in rats by single intraperitoneal administration of STZ(65 mg/kg body weight). C. ferrea extract at the doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight was orally administered to both diabetic and non-diabetic animals for a period of 30 days. After completion of experimental duration serum, liver and pancreas were used for evaluating biochemical and histopathological changes.Results: Oral administration of C. ferrea leaf extract significantly reduced elevated serum glucose, α-amylase, liver function levels and signii cantly increased serum insulin, total protein and body weight as well as improved lipid proi le due to diabetes. Furthermore, the treatment resulted in a marked increase in glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, catalase and reduced glutathione, and diminished levels of lipid peroxidation in liver and pancreas of diabetic rats. Histopathological studies demonstrated the reduction in the pancreas and liver damage and coni rmed the biochemical i ndings.Conclusions: From the present study, it can be concluded that the C. ferrea leaf extract ef ectively improved hyperglycaemia while inhibiting the progression of oxidative stress in STZ-induced diabetic rats. 6Geochemistry of lamprophyres associated with uranium mineralization, Southeastern Desert, Egypt显示文摘Two brecciated shear zones (NNW-SSE) are found crosscutting cataclastic rocks. The cataclastic rocks (3.0 km2) occupy the core of the granitic pluton and enclose a roof pendant of mafic-ultramafic rocks. The NNW-SSE-extending lamprophyre dykes vary in thickness from 0.5 m to 1 m and up to 800 m long, cutting the cataclastic rocks and are composed mainly of plagioclases, amphiboles, relics of pyroxenes and K-feldspar phenocrysts embedded in fine-grained groundmass. They are characterized as being peraluminous, calc-alkaline in composition (chemical trap) and enriched in calcite, sulfide and P2O5. The lamprophyres were affected by hydrothermal alteration (chlorite-carbonate alteration) while the cataclastic rocks were affected by diagenetic alteration (K-feldspar-albite alteration). Uranium mineralization is the product of hydrothermal events and has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), involving primary uranium minerals (U3O8) and secondary uranium minerals (uranophane and beta-uranophane, kasolite, torbernite, autonite and meta-autonite) in addition to U- bearing minerals (astrocyanite, betafite and fergusonite). The presence of different mineral parageneses associated with clay minerals indicates that the lamprophyres were subjected to acidic and alkaline mineralizing solutions. Moreover, the U-Zr/U, U-Ce/U values show negative correlations, confirming U-enrichment in both cataclastic rocks and shear zones while the Th-eU/eTh, Th-Zr/Th and Th-Ce/Th values show negative correlations, indicating that the U-bearing solutions are rich in Th in the cataclastic rocks only.Mohamed E. 8Effect of Microalloying Additions on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Low Carbon Steel显示文摘Low carbon steels are characterized by good weldability,formability and fracture toughness properties.However,the low strength levels of these steel grades limit their wide applications.On the other hand,increasing the strength by increasing the carbon content and alloying elements deteriorates the other properties.In this study,the microalloying technique was used to examine the possibility of attaining low carbon steels with good combination of strength,ductility and impact properties.A low carbon steel microalloyed with single addition of vanadium and another one microalloyed with combined addition of vanadium and titanium were used in this investigation and their properties were compared with non-microalloyed low carbon steel having the same base composition.Furthermore,other two nonmicroalloyed and V-microalloyed steels with higher carbon,silicon and manganese contents were also investigated to reveal the effect of base composition.Tensile,hardness,room and zero temperature Charpy V-notch impact tests were conducted to evaluate the variations in the mechanical properties of low carbon hot forged steel containing vanadium and combinations of vanadium and titanium.In addition,the microstructures of the different investigated steels were observed using both optical microscope and scanning electron microscope.Furthermore,the hardness of the ferrite phase was also determined using micro-hardness technique.The results showed improvement of the mechanical properties of the investigated steels by both single V-and combined V + Ti-microadditions.Tensile,hardness and impact tests results indicated that good combinations of strength,ductility and impact properties can be achieved by V-microalloying addition.Steel with combination of V and Ti microaddition has much higher hardness,yield strength,ultimate tensile strength and impact energy at both room and zero temperatures compared with non-microalloyed and single Vmicroalloyed steels.Higher C,Si and Mn contents result in increasing the strength accompanied with decreasing the impact energy.Scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy studies revealed grain refinement effect of both Vand V+Ti-microadditions.The micro-hardness measurements of the ferrite phase confirmed the precipitation strengthening effect of microalloying elements.EISSA Mamdouh ABD El-Aziz Ahmed GHALI Saeed HALFA Hossam SABER Shady 2011Journal of Iron and Steel Research(International)2011,18,S1:2
9Calcium channel α2δ1 subunit as a novel biomarker for diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘Objective:Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is the fifth most common malignancy worldwide.The identification of new simple,inexpensive and highly accurate markers for HCC diagnosis and screening is needed.This case-control study evaluates the role of annexin A2 and voltage-gated calcium channelsα2δ1 subunit as serum biomarkers for HCC diagnosis.Methods:The study comprised three groups:group 1,50 patients with an initial diagnosis of HCC associated with chronic hepatitis C virus infection;group 2,25 patients diagnosed with chronic hepatitis C virus infection and cirrhosis without any evidence of HCC;and group 3,15 healthy controls.All participants were subjected to clinical and laboratory investigations,and radiological scanning.The serum levels of alpha-fetoprotein(AFP),annexin A2,and theα2δ1 subunit were evaluated by using ELISA technique.Results:The serum levels of annexin A2 significantly increased in patients with HCC(10.4±2.5 ng/m L;P<0.001)or with cirrhosis(9.31±1.8 ng/m L;P<0.001)comparing to that of healthy controls(0.296±0.09 ng/m L).However,there was no significant difference in serum annexin A2 levels in patients with HCC comparing to those with cirrhosis.Serumα2δ1 subunit significantly increased in patients with HCC(20.12±3.7 ng/m L)comparing to that in patients with cirrhosis(10.41±3.4 ng/m L,P<0.001)and healthy controls(10.2±2.9 ng/m L,P<0.001).Conclusions:The serumα2δ1 subunit may function as a new biomarker for HCC diagnosis.Conversely,serum annexin A2 has low diagnostic value as an HCC marker,especially in patients with underlying cirrhosis.Sana Amhimmid Badr Maryan Waheeb Fahmi Manal Mahmoud Nomir Mamdouh Mohammad El-Shishtawy 2018Cancer Biology & Medicine2018,15,1:2
