1On the combined effect of soil fertility and topography on tree growth in subtropical forest ecosystems—a study from SE China显示文摘Aims The aim of our research was to understand small-scale effects of topography and soil fertility on tree growth in a forest biodiversity and ecosystem functioning(BEF)experiment in subtropical SE China.Methods Geomorphometric terrain analyses were carried out at a spatial resolution of 5×5 m.Soil samples of different depth increments and data on tree height were collected from a total of 566 plots(667 m2 each).The soils were analyzed for carbon(soil organic carbon[SOC]),nitrogen,acidity,cation exchange capacity(CEC),exchangeable cations and base saturation as soil fertility attributes.All plots were classified into geomorphological units.Analyses of variance and linear regressions were applied to all terrain,soil fertility and tree growth attributes.Important Findings In general,young and shallow soils and relatively small differences in stable soil properties suggest that soil erosion has truncated the soils to a large extent over the whole area of the experiment.This explains the concurrently increasing CEC and SOC stocks downslope,in hollows and in valleys.However,colluvial,carbon-rich sediments are missing widely due to the convexity of the footslopes caused by uplift and removal of eroded sediments by adjacent waterways.The results showed that soil fertility is mainly influenced by topography.Monte-Carlo flow accumulation(MCCA),curvature,slope and aspect significantly affected soil fertility.Furthermore,soil fertility was affected by the different geomorphological positions on the experimental sites with ridge and spur positions showing lower exchangeable base cation contents,especially potassium(K),due to leaching.This geomorphological effect of soil fertility is most pronounced in the topsoil and decreases when considering the subsoil down to 50 cm depth.Few soil fertility attributes affect tree height after 1-2 years of growth,among which C stocks proved to be most important while pH_(KCl)and CEC only played minor roles.Nevertheless,soil acidity and a high proportion of Al on the exchange complex affected tree height even after only 1-2 years growth.Hence,our study showed that forest nutrition is coupled to a recycling of litter nutrients,and does not only depend on subsequent supply of nutrients from the mineral soil.Besides soil fertility,topography affected tree height.We found that especially MCCA as indicator of water availability affected tree growth at small-scale,as well as aspect.Overall,our synthesis on the interrelation between fertility,topography and tree growth in a subtropical forest ecosystem in SE China showed that topographic heterogeneity lead to ecological gradients across geomorphological positions.In this respect,small-scale soil-plant interactions in a young forest can serve as a driver for the future development of vegetation and biodiversity control on soil fertility.In addition,it shows that terrain attributes should be accounted for in ecological research.Thomas Scholten Philipp Goebes Peter Kühn Steffen Seitz Thorsten Assmann Jürgen Bauhus Helge Bruelheide Francois Buscot Alexandra Erfmeier Markus Fischer Werner Härdtle Jin-Sheng He Keping Ma Pascal A.Niklaus Michael Scherer-Lorenzen Bernhard Schmid Xuezheng Shi Zhengshan Song Goddert von Oheimb Christian Wirth Tesfaye Wubet Karsten Schmidt 2017Journal of Plant Ecology2017,10,1:22
2Laparoscopic surgery for benign and malign diseases of the digestive system:Indications,limitations,and evidence显示文摘The laparoscopic technique was introduced in gastrointestinal surgery in the mid 1980s.Since then,the development of this technique has been extraordinary.Triggered by technical innovations(stapling devices or coagulation/dissecting devices),nowadays any type of gastrointestinal resection has been successfully performed laparoscopically and can be performed laparoscopically dependent on the patient’s condition.This summary gives an overview over 30 years of laparoscopic surgery with focus on today’s indications and evidence.Main indications remain the more common procedures,e.g.,appendectomy,cholecystectomy,bariatric procedures or colorectal resections.For all these indications,the laparoscopic approach has become the gold standard with less perioperative morbidity.Regarding oncological outcome there have been several highquality randomized controlled trials which demonstrated equivalency between laparoscopic and open colorectal resections.Less common procedures like esophagectomy,oncological gastrectomy,liver and pancreatic resections can be performed successfully as well by anexperienced surgeon.However,the evidence for these special indications is poor and a general recommendation cannot be given.In conclusion,laparoscopic surgery has revolutionized the field of gastrointestinal surgery by reducing perioperative morbidity without disregarding surgical principles especially in oncological surgery.Markus Alexander Küper Friederike Eisner Alfred K?nigsrainer J?rg Glatzle 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,17:9

5Rapid,simple and stability-indicating determination of polyhexamethylene biguanide in liquid and gel-like dosage forms by liquid chromatography with diode-array detection显示文摘A rapid and simple method for the determination of polyhexamethylene biguanide(polyhexanide,PHMB)in liquid and gel-like pharmaceutical formulations by means of high performance liquid chromatography coupled to diode-array detection(HPLC-DAD)was developed.Best separation was achieved using a cyanopropyl bonded phase(Agilent Zorbax Eclipse XDB-CN column 4.6 mm x 75 mm with particle size of 3.5μm)as well as gradient elution consisting of acetonitrile/deionized water at a flow rate of 1.0mL/min.The optimized and applied chromatographic conditions permitted separation of polyhexanide from interacting matrix with subsequent detection at a wavelength of 235 nm with good sensitivity.The method validation was carried out with regard to the guidelines for analytical procedures demanded by the International Conference on Harmonisation(ICH).Mean recoveries of 102%and 101%for gel-like as well as liquid preparations were obtained.Suitable repeatability as well as intermediate precision could be achieved with limits of detection≤0.004 mg/mL for both formulations,equivalent to≤0.004%PHMB concerning sample preparation.Determination of PHMB was accomplished without tedious sample preparation.Interacting matrix could be eliminated by the chromatographicprocedure with excellent performance of system suitability.All analytical requirements were fulfilled permitting a reliable and precise determination of PHMB in pharmaceuticals.Furthermore,the developed method was applied to stability testing of pharmaceutical preparations containing PHMB.Markus Küsters Soren Beyer Stephan Kutscher Harald Schlesinger Michael Gerhartz 2013Journal of Pharmaceutical Analysis2013,3,6:2

7Infectious, atopic and inflammatory diseases, childhood adversities and familial aggregation are independently associated with the risk for mental disorders: Results from a large Swiss epidemiological study显示文摘AIM To examine the associations between mental disorders and infectious, atopic, inflammatory diseases while adjusting for other risk factors.METHODS We used data from PsyC oL aus, a large Swiss Population Cohort Study(n = 3720; age range 35-66). Lifetime diagnoses of mental disorders were grouped into the following categories: Neurodevelopmental, anxiety(early and late onset), mood and substance disorders. They were regressed on infectious, atopic and other inflammatory diseases adjusting for sex, educational level, familial aggregation, childhood adversities and traumatic experiences in childhood. A multivariate logistic regression was applied to each group of disorders. In a complementary analysis interactions with sex were introduced via nested effects. RESULTS Associations with infectious, atopic and other chronic inflammatory diseases were observable together with consistent effects of childhood adversities and familial aggregation, and less consistent effects of trauma in each group of mental disorders. Streptococcal infections were associated with neurodevelopmental disorders(men), and measles/mumps/rubella-infections with early and late anxiety disorders(women). Gastric inflammatory diseases took effect in mood disorders(both sexes) and in early disorders(men). Similarly, irritable bowel syndrome was prominent in a sex-specific way in mood disorders in women, and, moreover, was associated with early and late anxiety disorders. Atopic diseases were associated with late anxiety disorders. Acne(associations with mood disorders in men) and psoriasis(associations with early anxiety disorders in men and mood disorders in women) contributed sex-specific results. Urinary tract infections were associated with mood disorders and, in addition, in a sex-specific way with late anxiety disorders(men), and neurodevelopmental and early anxiety disorders(women).CONCLUSION Infectious, atopic and inflammatory diseases areimportant risk factors for all groups of mental disorders. 20Coherent interaction of atoms with a beam of light confined in a light cage显示文摘Controlling coherent interaction between optical fields and quantum systems in scalable,integrated platforms is essential for quantum technologies.Miniaturised,warm alkali-vapour cells integrated with on-chip photonic devices represent an attractive system,in particular for delay or storage of a single-photon quantum state.Hollow-core fibres or planar waveguides are widely used to confine light over long distances enhancing light-matter interaction in atomic-vapour cells.However,they suffer from inefficient filling times,enhanced dephasing for atoms near the surfaces,and limited light-matter overlap.We report here on the observation of modified electromagnetically induced transparency for a non-diffractive beam of light in an on-chip,laterally-accessible hollow-core light cage.Atomic layer deposition of an alumina nanofilm onto the light-cage structure was utilised to precisely tune the high-transmission spectral region of the light-cage mode to the operation wavelength of the atomic transition,while additionally protecting the polymer against the corrosive alkali vapour.The experiments show strong,coherent light-matter coupling over lengths substantially exceeding the Rayleigh range.Additionally,the stable non-degrading performance and extreme versatility of the light cage provide an excellent basis for a manifold of quantum-storage and quantumnonlinear applications,highlighting it as a compelling candidate for all-on-chip,integrable,low-cost,vapour-based photon delay.Flavie Davidson-Marquis Julian Gargiulo Esteban Gómez-López Bumjoon Jang Tim Kroh Chris Müller Mario Ziegler Stefan A.Maier Harald Kübler Markus A.Schmidt Oliver Benson 2021Light(Science & Applications)2021,10,7:1
