11Ionomic Profiling of Rice Genotypes and Identification of Varieties with Elemental Covariation Effects显示文摘Ionomic profiles are primarily influenced by genetic and environmental factors.Identifying ionomic responses to varietal effects is necessary to understand the ionomic variations among species or subspecies and to potentially understand genetic effects on ionomic profiles.We cultivated 120 rice(Oryza sativa)varieties to seedling stage in identical hydroponic conditions and determined the concentrations of 26 elements(including 3 anions)in the shoots and roots of rice.Although the subspecies effects were limited by the genus Oryza pre-framework and its elemental chemical properties,we found significant differences in ionomic variations in most elements among the aus,indica and japonica subspecies.Principal component analysis of the correlations indicated that variations in the root-to-shoot ionomic transport mechanisms were the main causes of ionomic differences among the subspecies.Furthermore,the correlations were primarily associated with the screening of varieties for elemental covariation effects that can facilitate breeding biofortified rice varieties with safe concentrations of otherwise toxic elements.The japonica subspecies exhibited the strongest elemental correlations and elemental covariation effects,therefore,they showed greater advantages for biofortification than the indica and aus subspecies,whereas indica and aus subspecies were likely safer in metal(loid)polluted soils.We also found that geographical and historical distribution significantly defined the ionomic profiles.Overall,the results of this study provided a reference for further association studies to improve the nutritional status and minimize toxicity risks in rice production.ZHANG Chengming Nobuhiro TANAKA Maria Stefanie Dw IYANTI Matthew SHENTON Hayato MARUYAMA Takuro SHINANO CHU Qingnan XIE Jun Toshihiro WATANABE 2022Rice science2022,29,1:0
12Real time imaging of two-dimensional iron oxide spherulite nanostructure formation显示文摘The formation of complex hierarchical nanostructures has attracted a lot of attention from both the fundamental science and potential applications point of view.Spherulite structures with radial fibrillar branches have been found in various solids;however,their growth mechanisms remain poorly understood.Here,we report real time imaging of the formation of two-dimensional(2D)iron oxide spherulite nanostructures in a liquid cell using transmission electron microscopy(TEM).By tracking the growth trajectories,we show the characteristics of the reaction front and growth kinetics.Our observations reveal that the tip of a growing branch splits as the width exceeds certain sizes(5.5–8.5 nm).The radius of a spherulite nanostructure increases linearly with time at the early stage,transitioning to nonlinear growth at the later stage.Furthermore,a thin layer of solid is accumulated at the tip and nanoparticles from secondary nucleation also appear at the growing front which later develop into fibrillar branches.The spherulite nanostructure is polycrystalline with the co-existence of ferrihydrite and Fe3O4 through-out the growth.A growth model is further established,which provides rational explanations on the linear growth at the early stage and the nonlinearity at the later stage of growth.Wenjing Zheng Matthew R.Hauwiller Wen-I Liang Colin Ophus Peter Ercius Emory M.Chan Ying-Hao Chu Mark Asta Xiwen Du A.Paul Alivisatos Haimei Zheng 2019Nano Research2019,12,11:0

15Quality of colonoscopy performed by medical or surgical specialists and trainees in five Australian hospitals显示文摘BACKGROUND Ensuring colonoscopy procedure quality is vital to the success of screening and surveillance programmes for bowel cancer in Australia. However, the data on the performance of quality metrics, through adequate adenoma detection, bowel preparation, and procedure completion rates, in the Australian public sector is limited. Understanding these can inform quality improvement to further strengthen our capacity for prevention and early detection of colorectal cancer.AIM To determine the quality of colonoscopy in Australian teaching hospitals and their association with proceduralist specialty, trainee involvement, and location.METHODS We retrospectively evaluated 2443 consecutive colonoscopy procedure reports from 1 January to 1 April, 2018 from five public teaching tertiary hospitals in Australia(median 60 years old, 49% male). Data for bowel preparation quality,procedure completion rates, and detection rates of clinically significant adenomas, conventional adenomas, and serrated lesions was collected and compared to national criteria for quality in colonoscopy. Participating hospital, proceduralist specialty, and trainee involvement indicators were used for stratification. Data was analysed using Chi-squared tests of independence, MannWhitney U, One-way ANOVA, and multivariate binary logistic regression.RESULTS Fifty-two point two percent(n = 1276) and 43.3%(n = 1057) were performed by medical and surgical proceduralists respectively, whilst 29.8%(n = 728) involved a trainee. Inadequate bowel preparation affected 7.3% of all procedures. The procedure completion rate was 95.1%, which increased to 97.5% after adjustment for bowel preparation quality. The pooled cancer, adenoma, and serrated lesion detection rates for all five hospitals were 3.5%, 40%, and 5.9% respectively. Assessed hospitals varied significantly by patient age(P < 0.001), work-force composition(P < 0.001), adequacy of bowel preparation(P < 0.001), and adenoma detection rate(P < 0.001). Two hospitals(40%) did not meet all national criteria for quality, due to a procedure completion rate of 94.5% or serrated lesion detection rate of 2.6%. Although lower than the other hospitals, the difference was not significant. Compared with surgical specialists, procedures performed by medical specialists involved older patients [65 years(inter-quartile range, IQR 58-73) vs 64 years(IQR 56-71);P = 0.04] and were associated with a higher adenoma detection rate [odds ratio(OR) 1.53;confidence interval: 1.21-1.94;P < 0.001]. Procedures involving trainee proceduralists were not associated with differences in the detection of cancer, adenoma, or serrated lesions, compared with specialists, or according to their medical or surgical background. On multivariate analysis, cancer detection was positively associated with patient age(OR 1.04;P < 0.001) and negatively associated with medical compared to surgical proceduralists(OR 0.54;P = 0.04). Conventional adenoma detection rates were independently associated with increasing patient age(OR 1.04;P < 0.001), positively associated with medical compared to surgical proceduralists(OR 1.41;P = 0.002) and negatively associated with male gender(OR 0.53;P < 0.001).CONCLUSION Significant differences in the quality of colonoscopy in Australia exist, even when national benchmarks are achieved. 16Sand wave migration near the southeastern corner of Martha's Vineyard,Massachusetts,USA显示文摘Sand waves of approximately 2 m in height were observed to migrate nearly 40 m with counterclockwise rotation between two bathymetric surveys performed three months apart near the southeastern corner of Martha's Vineyard,Massachusetts.The region is characterized by strong tidal currents,intermittent energetic surface wave events,and shallow water with local depth ranging from 2 to 7 m.This study uses the process-based model,Delft3D,with a three-dimensional approach to examine the sand wave dy-namics by incorporating surface waves,winds,currents,and bathymetric observations.The model successfully simulates sand wave migration in comparisons to observations.Model sensitivity analyses show that the sand wave migration reduces by 65%with the absence of the surface waves.The modeled sand wave migration speed is correlated with the tidal current Shields parameter,and sharp increases in migration speed occur when the wave-driven Shields parameter increases in response to energetic surface wave events.The combined effect of tides,surface waves,and bathymetry is the origin of the rotational aspect of the sand wave,using the Shields parameter as an indicator of tidal currents and surface wave influence on sand wave dynamics.Vinícius Santos Pessanha Peter Cheng Chu Matthew Kenneth Gough Peter Traykovski Mara Morgenstern Orescanin 2023International Journal of Sediment Research2023,38,5:0
