GPS-constrained inversion of present-day slip rates along major faults of the Sichuan-Yunnan region, China显示文摘A linked-fault-element model is employed to invert for contemporary slip rates along major active faults in the Sichuan-Yunnan region (96°-108°E, 21°-35°N) using the least squares method. The model is based on known fault geometry, and constrained by a GPS-derived horizontal velocity field. Our results support a model attributing the eastward extrusion of the Tibetan Plateau driven mainly by the north-northeastward indentation of the Indian plate into Tibet and the gravitational collapse of the plateau. Resisted by a relatively stable south China block, materials of the Sichuan-Yunnan region rotate clockwise around the eastern Himalayan tectonic syntaxis. During the process the Garzê-Yushu, Xianshuihe, Anninghe, Zemuhe, Daliangshan, and Xiaojiang faults, the southwest extension of the Xiaojiang fault, and the Daluo-Jinghong and Mae Chan faults constitute the northeast and east boundaries of the eastward extrusion, with their left slip rates being 0.3-14.7, 8.9-17.1, 5.1 ± 2.5, 2.8 ± 2.3, 7.1 ± 2.1, 9.4 ± 1.2, 10.1 ± 2.0, 7.3 ± 2.6, and 4.9 ± 3.0 mm/a respectively. The southwestern boundary consists of a widely distributed dextral transpressional zone other than a single fault. Right slip rates of 4.2 ± 1.3, 4.3 ± 1.1, and 8.5 ± 1.7 mm/a are detected across the Nanhua-Chuxiong-Jianshui, Wuliangshan, and Longling-Lancang faults. Crustal deformation across the Longmenshan fault is weak, with short-ening rates of 1.4 ± 1.0 and 1.6 ± 1.3 mm/a across the Baoxing-Beichuan and Beichuan-Qingchuan segments. Northwest of the Longmenshan fault lies an active deformation zone (the Longriba fault) with 5.1±1.2 mm/a right slip across. Relatively large slip rates are detected across a few faults within the Sichuan-Yunnan block: 4.4±1.3 mm/a left slip and 2.7±1.1 mm/a shortening across the Litang fault, and 2.7±2.3 mm/a right-lateral shearing and 6.7±2.3 mm/a shortening across the Yunongxi fault and its surrounding regions. In conclusion, we find that the Sichuan-Yunnan region is divided into more than a dozen active micro-blocks by a large number of faults with relatively slow slip rates. The eastward extrusion of the Tibetan Plateau is absorbed and adjusted in the region mainly by these faults, other than a small number of large strike-slip faults with fast slip rates.WANG YanZhao WANG EnNing SHEN ZhengKang WANG Min GAN WeiJun QIAO XueJun MENG GuoJie LI TieMing TAO Wei YANG YongLin CHENG Jia LI Peng 2008Science China Earth Sciences2008,51,9:65
Anomalous crustal movements before great Wenchuan earthquake observed by GPS显示文摘Studies of GPS data carried out before and after the great Wenchuan earthquake of Ms8.0 on May 12,2008 show that anomalous crustal movements occurred before the earthquake.Data from 4 pre-earthquake observation sessions at a dense network of stations show that there were prominent broad-ranged long-and mid-term anomalies in horizontal displacements and strain and in vertical displacements.Data from the fewer-numbered reference stations of continuous GPS observations since 1999 in West and South China showed short-term preseismic anomalies in horizontal displacements. The detection of co-seismic horizontal displacements at these stations supports the existence of the pre-earthquake anomalies. Results of single-epoch solutions of data from continuous-observation stations near the epicenter also show large imminent anomalies in vertical displacements.Although the Wenchuan earthquake was not predicted, these results give a strong indication that GPS should be the main observation technique for long-term,mid-term,short-term and imminent earthquake predictions.Gu Guohua Meng Guojie Wang Wuxing 2011Geodesy and Geodynamics2011,2,2:10
Investigation of ionospheric TEC changes related to the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake based on statistic analysis and signal detection显示文摘Ionospheric TEC(total electron content) time series are derived from GPS measurements at 13 stations around the epicenter of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake.Defining anomaly bounds for a sliding window by quartile and 2-standard deviation of TEC values, this paper analyzed the characteristics of ionospheric changes before and after the destructive event. The Neyman-Pearson signal detection method is employed to compute the probabilities of TEC abnormalities.Result shows that one week before the Wenchuan earthquake, ionospheric TEC over the epicenter and its vicinities displays obvious abnormal disturbances, most of which are positive anomalies. The largest TEC abnormal changes appeared on May 9,three days prior to the seismic event.Signal detection shows that the largest possibility of TEC abnormity on May 9 is 50.74%,indicating that ionospheric abnormities three days before the main shock are likely related to the preparation process of the MS8.0 Wenchuan earthquake.Jianyong Li Guojie Meng Min Wang Hua Liao Xuhui Shen 2009Earthquake Science2009,22,5:6
Heterogeneous strain regime in the eastern margin of Tibetan Plateau and its tectonic implications显示文摘The eastern margin of Tibetan Plateau is one of the most active zones of tectonic deformation and seismicity in China. To monitor strain buildup and benefit seismic risk assessment, we constructed 14 survey-mode global position system(GPS) stations throughout the northwest of Longmenshan fault. A new GPS field over 1999–2011 is derived from measurements of the newly built and pre-existing stations in this region. Sequentially, two strain rate fields, one preceding and the other following the 2008 MW7.9 Wenchuan earthquake, are obtained using the Gausian weighting approach. Strain field over1999–2007 shows distinct strain partitioning prior to the2008 MW7.9 Wenchuan earthquake, with compression spreading over around Longmenshan area. Strain field derived from the two measurements in 2009 and 2011 shows that the area around Longmenshan continues to be under striking compression, as the pattern preceding the Wenchuan earthquake, implying a causative factor of the sequent of 2013 MW6.7 Lushan earthquake. Our GPSderived dilatation shows that both the Wenchuan and Lushan earthquakes occurred within the domain of pronounced contraction. The GPS velocities demonstrate that the Longriba fault underwent slight motion with the faultnormal and-parallel rates at 1.0 ± 2.5 mm and 0.3 ± 2.2 mm/a; the Longmenshan fault displayed slow activity, with a fault-normal rate at 0.8 ± 2.5 mm/a, and a fault-parallel rate at 1.8 ± 1.7 mm/a. Longriba fault is on a par with Longmenshan fault in strain partitioning to accommodate the southeastward motion of eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. Integrated analysis of principal strain tensors, mean principal stress, and fast directions of mantle anisotropy shows that west of Sichuan is characterized as mechanically strong crust-mantle coupling.Guojie Meng Xiaoning Su Weiwei Wu Jinwei Ren Yonglin Yang Jicang Wu Chieh-Hung Chen Nikolay V.Shestakov 2015Earthquake Science2015,28,1:5
Global crustal movement and tectonic plate boundary deformation constrained by the ITRF2008显示文摘On the basis of the newly released International Terrestrial Reference Frame(ITRF2008) by the International Earth Rotation Service(IERS),a new global plate model ITRF2008 plate for the major plates is established. This ITRF2008-derived model is analyzed in comparison with NNR-NUVEL1A model, which is mainly based on geological and geophysical data. The Eurasia and Pacific plates display obvious differences in terms of the velocity fields derived from the two plate motion models.Plate acceleration is also introduced to characterize the differences of the two velocity fields which obtained from ITRF2008-plate and NNR-NUVEL1A models for major individual plates. The results show that the Africa,South America and Eurasia plates are undergoing acceleration, while the North America and Australia plates are in the state of deceleration motion.Zhu Ze Meng Guojie Su Xiaoning Wu Jicang Li Jean Xiaojing 2012Geodesy and Geodynamics2012,3,3:4
Pre-moxibustion and moxibustion prevent Alzheimer's disease显示文摘The Alzheimer's disease model in Wistar rats was established by injection of amyloid β-peptide(Aβ1–42) into the hippocampal CA1 region. Rats were treated with suspended moxibustion on Baihui(GV20) and Shenshu(BL23) acupoints. Prior to and post Aβ1–42exposure. Results showed no evidence of apoptosis in hippocampal neurons, a significantly reduced apoptosis rate of neurons and improved learning and memory abilities were observed in the Alzheimer's disease model. In particular, moxibustion prior to Aβ1–42exposure was more effective than moxibustion after Aβ1–42exposure in protecting the neuronal structure and lowering the apoptosis rate. Our findings indicate that a combination of preventive and therapeutic moxibustion has a beneficial effect for the prevention of Alzheimer's disease development.Yanjun Du Ruolan Liu Guojie Sun Peiyan Meng Jie Song 2013Neural Regeneration Research2013,8,30:4
Ionospheric total electron content disturbance associated with May 12, 2008,Wenchuan earthquake显示文摘Possible ionospheric disturbances relating to the May 12, 2008, Ms8.0 Wenchuan earthquake were identified by Global Positioning System(GPS)-derived total electron content(TEC), ionosonde observations, the global ionospheric map(GIM), and electron density profiles detected by the Constellation Observation System for Meteorology Ionosphere and Climate(COSMIC).We applied a statistical test to detect anomalous TEC signals and found that a unique enhancement in TEC, recorded at 16 GPS stations, appeared on May 9, 2008. The critical frequency at F2 peak(f0F2), observed by the Chinese ionosondes, and maximal plasma frequency, derived from COSMIC data, revealed a characteristic similar to GPS TEC variations. The GIM showed that the anomalous variations of May 9 were located southeast of the epicenter. Using GPS data from 13 stations near the epicenter, we analyzed the TEC variations of satellite orbit traces during 04:00e11:00 UT. We found that TEC decreased to the east and increased to the southeast of the epicenter during this period. Results showed that the abnormal disturbance on May 9 was probably an ionospheric precursor of the Wenchuan earthquake of May 12, 2008.Li Jianyong Meng Guojie You Xinzhao Zhang Rui Shi Hongbo Han Yufei 2015Geodesy and Geodynamics2015,6,2:3

Phylogeny and sex chromosome evolution of Palaeognathae显示文摘Many paleognaths(ratites and tinamous) have a pair of homomorphic ZW sex chromosomes in contrast to the highly differentiated sex chromosomes of most other birds. To understand the evolutionary causes for the different tempos of sex chromosome evolution, we produced female genomes of 12 paleognathous species and reconstructed the phylogeny and the evolutionary history of paleognathous sex chromosomes. We uncovered that Palaeognathae sex chromosomes had undergone stepwise recombination suppression and formed a pattern of “evolutionary strata”. Nine of the 15 studied species’ sex chromosomes have maintained homologous recombination in their long pseudoautosomal regions extending more than half of the entire chromosome length. We found that in the older strata, the W chromosome suffered more serious functional gene loss. Their homologous Z-linked regions, compared with other genomic regions, have produced an excess of species-specific autosomal duplicated genes that evolved female-specific expression, in contrast to their broadly expressed progenitors. We speculate such “defeminization” of Z chromosome with underrepresentation of female-biased genes and slow divergence of sex chromosomes of paleognaths might be related to their distinctive mode of sexual selection targeting females rather than males, which evolved in their common ancestors.Zongji Wang Jilin Zhang Xiaoman Xu Christopher Witt Yuan Deng Guangji Chen Guanliang Meng Shaohong Feng Luohao Xu Tamas Szekely Guojie Zhang Qi Zhou 2022Journal of Genetics and Genomics2022,49,2:0
Effect of carbon deposition over carbonaceous catalysts on CH_(4)decomposition and CH_(4)-CO_(2)reforming显示文摘An investigation was made using a continuous fixed bed reactor to understand the influence of carbon deposition obtained under different conditions on CH_(4)-CO_(2)reforming.Thermogravimetry(TG)and X-ray diffraction(XRD)were employed to study the characteristics of carbon deposition. It was found that the carbonaceous catalyst is an efficient catalyst in methane decomposition and CH_(4)-CO_(2)reforming.The trend of methane decomposition at lower temperatures is similar to that at higher temperatures. The methane conversion is high during the initial of stage of the reaction, and then decays to a relatively fixed value after about 30 min. With temperature increase, the methane decomposition rate increases quickly. The reaction temperature has significant influence on methane decomposition, whereas the carbon deposition does not affect methane decomposition significantly.Different types of carbon deposition were formed at different methane decomposition reaction temperatures. The carbon deposition Type I generated at 900℃ has a minor effect on CH_(4)-CO_(2)reforming and it easily reacts with carbon dioxide, but the carbon deposition Type II generated at 1000℃and 1100℃clearly inhibits CH_(4)-CO_(2)reforming and it is difficult to react with carbon dioxide. The results of XRD showed that some graphite structures were found in carbon deposition Type II.Yongfa ZHANG Meng ZHANG Guojie ZHANG Huirong ZHANG 2010Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering2010,4,4:0
Investigation of Coulomb stress changes in south Tibet(central Himalayas) due to the 25th April 2015 M_W 7.8 Nepal earthquake using a Coulomb stress transfer model显示文摘After M_W 7.8 Nepal earthquake occurred, the rearrangement of stresses in the crust commonly leads to subsequent damaging earthquakes. We present the calculations of the coseismic stress changes that resulted from the 25 th April event using models of regional faults designed according to south Tibet-Nepal structure, and show that some indicative significant stress increases. We calculate static stress changes caused by the displacement of a fault on which dislocations happen and an earthquake occurs. A M_W 7.3 earthquake broke on 12 May at a distance of * 130 km SEE of the M_W 7.8 earthquake, whose focus roughly located on high Coulomb stress change(CSC) site. Aftershocks(first 15 days after the mainshock)are associated with stress increase zone caused by the main rupture. We set receiver faults with specified strikes, dips, and rakes, on which the stresses imparted by the source fault are resolved. Four group normal faults to the north of the Nepal earthquake seismogenic fault were set as receiver faults and variant results followed. We provide a discussion on Coulomb stress transfer for the seismogenic fault, which is useful to identify potential future rupture zones.Xu Cheng Guojie Meng 2016Earthquake Science2016,29,5:0
Introduction to the recently published treatise entitled A Guidebook to Earthquake Scientific Investigation显示文摘Scienctific expedition of earthquake plays a crucial role in acquiring various data related to earthquake cycle processes and lays a fundamental foundation for further understanding earthquake preparation, seismic disaster,policy-making for earthquake disaster mitigation etc.China is an earthquake-prone country due to its seismically active environment, therefore Chinese government has been paying greatattention to earthquake scientific investigation.Guojie Meng 2023Earthquake Research Advances2023,3,4:0
