| 1 | Hepatoprotective and antioxidant activity of a mangrove plant Lumnitzera racemosa显示文摘Objective:To identify the hepatoprotective and in vitro antioxidant activity of Lumnitzera racemosa(L.racemosa)leaf extract.Methods:Animals in Group 1 served as vehicle control,Group 2 served as liepatoloxin(CCL_4 treated)group,Group 3 served as positive control(Silyinarin)group,and Group 4,5 and 6 served as(75,150 and 300 mg/kg bw p.o.)L.raremosa leaf extract treated groups.Moreover,in vitro antioxidant DPPH,hydroxyl radical scavenging activity(HRSA),NO,ferric reducing antioxidant power(FRAP),lipid hydroperoxide(LPO)and super oxide dismutase(SOD)were also analyzed for the leaf extract.Results:The levels of the serum parameters such as serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase(SCOT),serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase(SGPT),alkaline phosphatase(ALP),bilirubin,cholesterol(CHL),sugar and lactate dehydrogenase(LDU)were significantly increased in CCL_4 treated rats when compared with the control group(P<0.05).But the L.racemosa leaf extract treated rats showed maximum reduction of SGOT[(210.36±19.63)IU/L],SGPT[(82.37±13.87)IU/L],ALP[(197.63±23.43)IU/L],bilurubin[(2.15±0.84)mg/dL],cholesterol[(163.83±15.63)mg/dL],sugar[(93.00±7.65)mg/dL]and LDH[(1134.00±285.00)IU/L]were observed with the high dose(300 mg/kg bw)of leaf extract treated rats.Histopathological scores showed that,no visible changes were observed with high dose(300 mg/kg bw)of leaf extract treated rats except few mild necrosis.The IC_(50)values were observed as(56.37±4.87)μg/mL,(57.68±1.98)μg/mL,(64.I5±2.90)μg/mL,(61.94±3.98)μg/mL,(94.53±1.68)μg/mL and(69.7±2.65)μg/mL for DPPH,HRSA,NO,FRAP,LPO and SOD radical scavenging activities,respectively.Conclusions:In conclusion,the hepatoprotective effect of the L.racemosa leaf extract might be due to the presence of phenolic groups,terpenoids and alkaloids and in vitro antioxidant properties. | Sundaram Ravikumar Murugesan Gnanadesigan | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2011,1,5: | 21 |
| 2 | Heat Transfer and Friction Factor Studies in a Circular Tube Fitted with Twisted Tape Consisting of Wire-nails显示文摘This paper deals with the experimental investigation on Nusselt number,friction factor and thermal en-hancement factor of a double pipe heat exchanger equipped with twisted tape consisting wire nails(WN-TT) and plain twisted tapes(P-TT) with three different twist ratios of y 2.0,4.4 and 6.0. Test runs are conducted using the water as the working fluid with Reynolds number range between 2000 and 12000 for WN-TT and P-TT. It is found that Nusselt number,friction factor and thermal enhancement factor in the tube equipped with WN-TT appreciably higher than those in the tube fitted with P-TT and plain tube. Over the range considered Nusselt number,friction factor and thermal enhancement factor in a tube with WN-TT are respectively,1.08 to 1.31,1.1 to 1.75 and 1.05 to 1.13 times of those in tube with P-TT. The better performance of WN-TT is due to combined effects of the follow-ing factors:(1) common swirling flow generated by P-TT,(2) additional turbulence offered by the wire nails. | 5 | Experimental study on behaviors of polypropylene fibrous concrete beams显示文摘Synthetic fibers made from nylon or polypropylene have gained application when loose and woven into geo textile form although no information on the matrix’s mechanical performance is obtained so that more understanding of their structural contribution to resist cracking can be determined. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation to determine the performance characteristics of concrete reinforced with a polypropylene structural fiber. In this investigation “Fiber mesh” brand of fibers manufactured by SL Concrete System, Tennessee, USA and marketed by M/S Millennium Building System, Inc., Ban-galore, India are used. The lengths of the fibers used were 24 mm. Fiber dosages used were 0.9, 1.8, 2.7 kg/m3. A total of three mixtures, one for each fiber dosage were made. A standard slump cone test was conducted on the fresh concrete mix with and without fibers to determine the workability of the mix. The test program included the evaluation of hardened concrete properties such as compressive, split tensile, modulus of rupture and flexural strengths. The increase in compressive strength is about 36.25%, 26.20%, and 23.75% respectively that of plain concrete. This increase in strength was directly proportional to amount of fibers present in the mix. The increase in flexural strength for Mixes I^III is about 21%, 16.6%, and 23% respectively that of plain concrete specimens. An experimental investigation was also made to study the behaviors of reinforced fibers concrete beams (with longitudinal reinforcements) under two-point loading. The deflection and crack patterns were also studied. The improvements in strength and ductility characteristics were discussed. | SUJI D. NATESAN S. C. | 7 | Hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties of marine halophyte Luminetzera racemosa bark extract in CCL_4 induced hepatotoxicity显示文摘Objective:To identify the hepatoprotective and antioxidant activity of Luminetzera racemosa (L racemosa)bark extract.Methods:Wistar albino rats were divided into 6 groups:Group 1 served as control;Group 2 served as hepatotoxin(CCL4 treated) group;Group 3 served as positive control(Silymarin) treated groups;Group 4,5 and 6 served as(100,200 and 300 mg/kg bw p.o.) L racemosa bark extract treated groups.Moreover,in vitro antioxidant indexes,including DPPH, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity(HRSA),NO,ferric reducing antioxidant power(FRAP),lipid hydroperoxide(LPO) and super oxide dismutase(SOD) were also analyzed in the bark extract. Results:The results suggested that,the level of serum glutamate oxyloacetic transaminase(SCOT), serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase(SGPT),alkaline phosphatise(ALP),bilurubin,cholesterol, sugar and lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) were significantly(P<0.05) increased in hepatotoxin treated rats when compared with the control group.But,the maximum reduction of SGOT[(225.36±13.65) IU/L],SGPT[(96.85±17.36) IU/L],ALP[(315.37±17.16) IU/L],bilirubin[(2.97±0.46) mg/dL], cholesterol[(163.73±17.54) mg/dL],sugar[(127.35±27.35) mg/dL]and LDH[(1 784.00±268.36) IU/L] were observed with 300 mg/kg bw of bark extract treated rats.Histopathological scores showed that,no visible changes were observed with high dose(300 mg/kg bw) of bark extract treated rats except mild fatty changes.The in vitro antioxidant assays showed that,the IC50 values were observed as(44.17±6.87)μ/mL,(42.45±2.81)μg/mL,(62.37±3.98)μg/mL,(54.24±3.09)μg/mL, (87.25±5.90)μg/mL and(71.54±5.42)μg/mL for DPPH.HRSA,NO,FRAP,LPO and SOD radical scavenging activities,respectively.Conclusions:The hepatoprotective and antioxidant activities of the bark extract might be to the presence of unique chemical classes such as flavonoids, alkaloids and polyphenols. | Murugesan Gnanadesigan Sundaram Ravikumar Samuel Jacob Inbaneson | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,6: | 4 |
| 8 | Prominent catalytic activity of mesoporous molecular sieves in the vapor phase dehydration of cyclohexanol to cyclohexene显示文摘Cerium incorporated KIT-6 mesoporous materials were synthesized through direct hydrothermal method and characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen sorption isotherm (BET), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), inductively coupled plasma -atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), diffuse reflectance ultraviolet visible spectroscopy (DRS-UV-Vis), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods. It appeared that stable cerium ions were inserted into the silica framework of KIT-6, thus generating acid properties in their host materials. The catalytic activity of Ce-KIT-6 materials was evaluated in the vapor phase dehydration of cyclohexanol to cyclohexene and dicyclohexyl ether at different temperatures with various Si/Ce molar ratios. Ce-KIT-6 (25) showed higher activity with 54% cyclohexanol conversion and 64% selectivity to cyclohexene. | 9 | ZSM-5沸石结晶度对乙苯叔丁基化对位选择性的影响(英文)显示文摘Highly crystalline ZSM-5 zeolites are important for para-selective alkylation of alkyl aromatics, because they carry few external acid sites for isomerization of p-dialkyl products. Such zeolites (Si/Al = 25, 50, and 75) were synthesized in a fluoride medium between pH 4 and 6. Their crystallinities, crystal sizes, and surface areas were higher than those of a commercial ZSM-5 zeolite. Their para selectivities in alkylation were tested for vapor-phase tert-butylation of ethylbenzene between 200 and 400 °C. As expected, all the catalysts showed more than 90% para selectivity. At 300 °C, ethylbenzene conversion decreased in the order ZSM-5(25, commercial) > ZSM-5(25) > ZSM-5(50) > ZSM-5(75). The catalysts had weak, medium, and strong acid sites, but all the acid sites of ZSM-5(75) were weaker than those of ZSM-5(25) and ZSM-5(50). The high activity of commercial ZSM-5 was caused by its strong acid sites being stronger than those of the synthesized zeolites. Although the activity of the commercial catalyst was higher than those of the present catalysts, the selectivity for 4-t-butylethylbenzene (4-t-BEB) was low. The optimum feed ratio (ethylbenzene:t-butyl alcohol) was 2:1 and the feed rate was 1.65 h?1 for high ethylbenzene conversion and 4-t-BEB selectivity. Time-on-stream studies showed slow catalyst deactivation. Highly crystalline ZSM-5 zeolites are therefore better than a commercial zeolite for para-selective alkylation of alkyl aromatics. They do not require much post-modification for high para selectivity. | 12 | In vitro antiplasmodial activity of Spiro benzofuran compound from mangrove plant of Southern India显示文摘Objective:To find out the in vitro antipalsmodial activities of mangrove leaf extracts.Methods: In vitro antiplasmodial assay was carried out with 13 different mangrove plants.Column chromatography was performed with the most potent Agecerious corniculatum(A.corniculatum) by using various solvent extractions.GC-MS was also preformed with the most potent ethanolic fraction of the A.corniculatum extract.Results:Of the 13 mangroves plants, A.corniculatum showed maximum percentage of parasitemia suppression(94.98±1.16)%.Column chromatography was performed with A.corniculatum with different solvents and the methanolic extract showed maximum percentage(99.73±1.63)%of parasitemia inhibition at 150μg/mL concentration with the IC50 value of(29.28±3.23)μg/mL concentration.The results of the GC-MS analysis observed that,the most potent methanolic extract showed maximum retention time(30.687 RT) and the chemical class was identified as Spiro[benzofuran-2(3 H),1’-(3 cyclohexane)-2’,3- dione,7-chloro-4’,6]which was responsible for the antiplasmodial activity.Conclusions:It is concluded from the present study that,the chemical constituents of A.corniculatum collected from Pichavaram mangrove forest can be used as a putative antiplasmodial drugs in future. | Sundaram Ravikumar Ganesan Ramanathan Murugesan Gnanadesigan | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2012,5,5: | 2 |

The orderly arrangement of mesopores was evident from the low angle X-ray diffraction patterns and transmission electron microscopy images. The catalytic performance of the materials was evaluated in the vapor phase isopropylation of phenol with isopropyl acetate. Phenol conversion decreased with the increase in the Si/Al ratio of the catalysts. The major reaction product was 4-isopropyl phenol with 78% selectivity. The delocalization of phenolic oxygen electron pair over the aromatic ring promoted para-selective alkylation. Such delocalization could be aided by the hydrophilic surface of the molecular sieves.
