| 1 | Microbiological parameters and maturity degree during composting of Posidonia oceanica residues mixed with vegetable wastes in semi-arid pedo-climatic condition显示文摘The aim of this study was to characterize the biological stability and maturity degree of compost during a controlled pile-composting trial of mixed vegetable residues (VR) collected from markets of Tunis City with residues of Posidonia oceanica (PoR), collected from Tunis beaches. The accumulation in beaches (as well as their removal) constitutes a serious environmental problem in all Mediterranean countries particularly in Tunisia. Aerobic-thermophilic composting is the most reasonable way to profit highly-valuable content of organic matter in these wastes for agricultural purposes. The physical, chemical, and biological parameters were monitored during composting over 150 d. The most appropriate parameters were selected to establish the maturity degree. The main result of this research was the deduction of the following maturity criterion: (a) C/N ratio < 15; (b) NH4+-N < 400 mg/kg; (c) CO2-C < 2000 mg CO2-C/kg; (d) dehydrogenase activity < 1 mg TPF/g dry matter; (e) germination index (GI) > 80%. These five parameters, considered jointly are indicative of a high maturity degree and thus of a high-quality organic amendment which employed in a rational way, may improve soil fertility and soil quality. The mature compost was relatively rich in N (13.0 g/kg), P (4.74 g/kg) and MgO (15.80 g/kg). | 2 | CeO2 nanoscale particles:Synthesis,characterization and photocatalytic activity under UVA light irradiation显示文摘CeO_2 nanoparticles(NPs) were synthesized in alkaline medium via the homogeneous precipitation method and were subsequently calcined at 80 ℃/24 h(assigned as CeO_2-80) and 500 ℃/2 h(assigned as CeO_2-500). The as-prepared materials and the commercial ceria(assigned as CeO_2-com) were characterized using TGA-MS, XRD, SEM-EDX, UV-vis DRS and IEP techniques. The photocatalytic performances of all obtained photocatalysts were assessed by the degradation of Congo red azo-dye(CR) under UVAlight irradiation at various environmental key factors(e.g., reaction time and calcination temperature).Results reveal that CeO_2 compounds crystalize with cubic phase, CeO_2-500 exhibits smaller crystallite size(9 nm vs 117 nm) than that of bare CeO_2-com. SEM analysis shows that the materials are sphericallike in shape NPs with strong assembly of CeO_2 NPs observed in the CeO_2-500 NPs. EDX analysis confirms the stoichiometry of CeO_2 NPs. UV-vis DRS measurement reveals that, CeO_2-500 NPs exhibits a red-shift of absorption band and a more narrow bandgap(2.6 eV vs 3.20 eV) than that of bare CeO_2-com. On the contrary, Urbach energy of Eu is found to be increased from 0.12 eV(CeO_2-com) to 0.17 eV(CeO_2-500),highlighting an increase of crystalline size and internal microstrain in the CeO_2-500 NPs sample. Zeta potential(IEP) of CeO_2-500 NPs is found to be 7.2. UVA-light-responsive photocatalytic activity is observed with CeO_2-500 NPs at a rate constant of 10×10^(-3) min^(-1), which is four times higher than that of CeO_2-com(K_(app)=2.4×10^(-3) min^(-1)) for the degradation of CR. Pseudo-first-order kinetic model gives the best fit. | 3 | Development of cork oak (Quercus suber L.) seedlings in response to tree shelters and mulching in northwestern Tunisia显示文摘The need for reforestation in cork oak (Quercus suber L.) areas is challenged by difficulties. Principal among these is herbivory of young plants, vegetative competition, and slow growth rates of cork oak seedlings. We evaluated the early development of cork oak seedlings treated using tree shelters and mulching in northwestern Tunisia. We tested three tree shelter treatments (non-vented, vented, and control) to shield seedlings from animal damage and five mulch types to control competing vegetation (Italian Stone Pine, Lentisk, combination of Italian Stone Pine and Lentisk (organic mulches), gravel (inorganic mulch) and no mulch). At the end of the two-year experiment, sheltered seedlings were 89-99% taller than unshelteredseedlings and had higher numbers and lengths of shoot growth flushes. In contrast, both stem diameter growth and dry weight biomass (from samples extracted after two years) were significantly reduced inside tree shelters. Root-to-shoot ratio was not significantly different in sheltered vs. unsheltered seedlings, suggesting that tree shelters do not adversely affect this parameter. Mulching alone did not favour growth, but could be beneficial when combined with tree shelters.
