9Opening of liver mitochondrial permeability transition pore in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats and its inhibition by methanol fraction of Ficus mucoso(Welw) root bark显示文摘Objective: Several pathologies arise from the inappropriate opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition(mPT) pore. In this regard, inhibition of mPT pore represents a cytoprotective approach to preserve mitochondrial function for treatment of diseases characterized by excessive tissue wastage such as diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study, therefore, was to study the effects of fractions of Ficus mucoso, a medicinal plant used in the traditional treatment of diabetes, on mPT pore in normal and streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic rat liver. Methods: Different solvent fractions of the crude methanol extract of F. mucoso were obtained by vacuum liquid chromatography and were tested on the mPT pore. Of all the fractions tested, methanol fraction of F. mucoso(MFFM) was the most potent and was used for in vivo studies. Diabetes mellitus was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of 60 mg/kg STZ, while treatment lasted for 14 d. In vivo, 30 male Wistar rats were divided into five groups: A, normo-glycemic control(distilled water);B, STZ(65 mg/kg;diabetic control);C, STZ + MFFM(25 mg/kg);D, STZ + MFFM(50 mg/kg);E, STZ + glibenclamide(5 mg/kg). The mPT, mitochondrial ATPase activity, lipid peroxidation and cytochrome c release were assessed spectrophotometrically while blood glucose levels were monitored using glucometer. Results: In vitro, the solvent fractions of F. mucoso, at all concentrations tested, had no effect on the mPT pore, in the absence of calcium, with no significant release of cytochrome c. Interestingly, calciumdependent pore opening was inhibited by all solvent fractions of F. mucoso, with the MFFM having the highest inhibitory effect of 83% at 3 mg/mL. Induction of opening of the mPT pore, significant(P < 0.001) enhancement of mitochondrial ATPase activity and elevated malondialdehyde(MDA) levels in STZ-induced diabetes were significantly(P < 0.001) reversed by MFFM and were comparable with the effects of glibenclamide, a standard antidiabetic drug. Also, treatment with MFFM at different doses significantly(P < 0.001) reduced high serum blood glucose compared to the diabetic control. Conclusion: F. mucoso could be useful in therapeutic management of diabetes mellitus given its ability to prevent excessive tissue wastage via inhibition of pore opening, and reduction in levels of MDA and serum blood glucose.Olubukola Titilope Oyebode Foluso Olayemi Ogunbiyi Olufunso Olabode Olorunsogo 2019Journal of Integrative Medicine2019,17,6:0
10Simulation studies on optimizing oil productivity in oil rim reservoirs under gas cap blow down production strategy显示文摘Gas cap blow down strategy is normally deployed for Ultra-thin oil rim reservoirs with huge gas caps due to extremely high gas oil ratios from wells in such reservoirs. The current state leads to loss of production from the oil reserves due to high initial reservoir pressure thus, reducing its net present value.Data on important factors essential to the productivity of oil rim reservoirs are used to build a heterogeneous ultra-thin reservoir with a time step of 10,000 days using the Eclipse software and its embedded correlations. The reservoir is subjected to a gas cap blowdown via a gas well, then an oil well is initiated into the model at onset and after time periods of 2000 days,4000 days,6000 days and 8000 days to estimate the oil recovery. It is expected that due to the large nature of the gas cap, pressure decline will be drastic and leading to a low oil recovery, hence the injection of water and gas at different rates at the periods indicated. The results indicate an oil recovery of 4.3%during gas cap blow down and 10.34%at 6000 days.Peak oil recoveries of 12.64%and 10.80%are estimated under 30,000 Mscf/day at 4000 days and 1000 stb/day at 6000 days respectively. This shows an incremental oil recovery of 8.34%and 6.5%over that recorded during gas cap blow down. The results also indicate that the gas production at those periods was not greatly affected with an estimated increment of 257 Bscf recorded during 30,000 Mscf/day at 4000 days. All secondary injection schemes at the respective time steps had positive impact on the overall oil recoveries. It is recommended that extra production and injection wells be drilled, enhanced oil recovery options and injection patterns be considered to further increase oil recovery.Oluwasanmi Olabode Pelumi Adewunmi Odera Uzodinma Gideon Famurewa Princess Ogba Chukwuemeka Amah 2023Petroleum2023,9,3:0

19Clinical perspective on C-reactive protein in prognostication of major adverse cardiac events in the elderly with established coronary heart disease显示文摘 The systemic response to tissue injury, regardless of cause is characterized by a cytokine-mediated alteration in the hepatic synthesis of a number of different plasma proteins, known collectively as 'acute phase reactants'. These proteins include C-reactive protein, serum amyloid A protein, alphal glycoprotein, ceruloplasmin, alpha macroglobulins, complement components (C1-C4, factor B, C9, C11), alpha1antitrypsin, alpha1 antichymotrypsin, fibrinogen, prothrombin, factor Ⅷ, plasminogen, haptoglobin, ferritin, immunoglobulins and lipoproteins. The initiation of the acute phase response is linked to the production of hormone-like polypeptide mediators now called cytokines, namedly, interleukin 1(IL-1),tumor necrosis factor, interferon gamma, interleukin 6 (IL-6),leukemia inhibitory factor, ciliary neurotropic factor, oncostatin M, and interleukin 11 (IL- 11).……Olabode Oladeinde 2006Journal of Geriatric Cardiology2006,3,2:0
